The surprise success of recent horror parody, Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey, has resulted in quite a few low-budget projects taking a similar approach by putting a twisted, gruesome spin on some classic children's characters (there are plenty more on the way).
Now, a new horror flick will see the Hundred Acre Wood's resident bear face-off against the most recognizable Disney icon of them all, Mickey Mouse.
Deadline reports that Glenn Douglas Packard (Pitchfork) will direct Mickey vs. Winnie for Untouchables Entertainment and the website iHorror.
According to the official synopsis:
"The film follows two convicts in the 1920s who escape into a cursed forest only to be dragged and consumed into the depths of the dark forest’s muddy heart. “A century later, a group of thrill-seeking friends unknowingly venture into the same woods. Their Airbnb getaway takes a horrifying turn when the convicts mutate into twisted versions of childhood icons Mickey Mouse & Winnie-The-Pooh,...

A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, paving the way for the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, which in turn kicked off the Twisted Childhood Universe, consisting of other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain, so Mickey-based horror movies also started springing up. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and...

Following in the wake of Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse getting their own horror movies, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid is the next to get the twisted treatment.
Originally published in 1837, the original tale of The Little Mermaid is now in the public domain, and Msr Media International presents their own horror version of the tale this year.
The Little Mermaid is being distributed by Grindstone Entertainment Group, and the film has officially been rated “R” this week for “Language, some violence and brief nudity.”
In the film from director Leigh Scott, “Dr. Eric Prince, an archaeologist, makes a dramatic discovery on a small Caribbean island—proof of an ancient, advanced prehistoric society. Disney has just announced the dates for the 2024 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Interestingly, they are moving the start date to the end of August, which means that there will not be a festival this summer at Epcot, as the Flower and Garden festival is set to end on May 27, 2024.
The announced dates for Food & Wine are August 29 through November 23, 2024. Last year, the popular event ran from July 27 to November 18, and in 2022, it ran from July 14 to November 19.
The time shift is definitely interesting. Disney is clearly doing this for a reason. It could free up the summer for something else, push people to other parks for “new” attractions coming, or even drive bookings toward the fall.
Of course, guests will have a wide variety of outdoor kitchens to try festival offerings this year. The Eat To The Beat Concert Series will also be returning. Emile’s Fromage Montage cheese stroll,...

Public Domain Explained Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2
This is nightmare fuel — not just for children but also for one of the biggest corporations in the world. And there’s one thing that is allowing these horror movies using well-known characters to be created: the public domain.
The public domain is the term used to refer to the vast body of works on which copyright has expired. Since the original copyright owner no longer has exclusive rights to their creation, any artist can now use these ideas to create their own work.

Bigfoots or Sasquatches, these creatures that straddle the line between man and beast are a captivating blend of mystery and fascination. Picture cavemen of colossal stature, untouched by the need to shave their skin. That’s your typical bigfoot. Whenever you visit the “happiest place on Earth” you usually plan out your entire trip from going on all of your favorite rides to picking out your favorite restaurant and even picking up a souvenir or two. But what you don’t expect to happen is getting seriously hurt, which unfortunately can happen.
A woman named Katrina Griffin, who was visiting Disney’s California Adventure in April of 2022 with her family, is suing the Walt Disney Company due to injuries sustained on her trip.
The lawsuit states that on April 3rd, 2022, Griffin bent over to tie her daughter’s shoes. When a cast member dressed as the popular Mickey Mouse character Goofy ran into her and they both fell onto the hard cement with him on top of her. She claims that she felt all of his body weight on her.
The suit was filed at the Orange County Superior Court in March.

A rare collection of artwork featuring concepts for Disneyland rides and areas that never were built has been sold at auction. Heritage Auctions handled the sales earlier this month in Beverly Hills, California.
The event spotlighted hand-drawn sketches from the Bradley/Bushman Early Disneyland Archives, which conceptualized rides and themed lands for the Disney theme park in Anaheim.
Among the theme park plans and concepts was an “Anything Can Happen” land, and plans for underwater aquariums. In the latter, guests would have walked into the mouths of the crocodile from Peter Pan or Monstro, the whale from Pinocchio, to view marine life.
Another concept detailed an 80-foot-tall statue of Goofy dressed as a clown. The colossus would have been located where the theme park’s Sleeping Beauty Castle now stands.

Whoo-ee! I love me a scary spider movie. And like an intricate, hypnotically inviting web, no two spider movies are alike. There are funny spider movies. There are campy spider movies. There are metaphorical spider movies about the unraveling mind, and there are even spider movies so filled with little creepy crawlers that you walk around your house with a slipper in your hand for days after watching them. And what luck that we have Two scary spider movies in such short order, both entirely definitely breeds of hair-raising horror.

With the Mickey Mouse and pre-Mickey Oswald the Lucky Rabbit characters now in the public domain, horror filmmakers are free to get their Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey on and turn the beloved animated icons into horror movie maniacs. Enter Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, an upcoming horror movie based on the character that was replaced by Mickey.
The project was announced earlier this year, and Bloody Disgusting has learned this week that the legendary Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) will star in the horror film!
The upcoming Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole is being described as a “sinister take on a nostalgic fan-favorite cartoon character encompassing the pure horror genre.”

Disney has just dropped the latest collection in this year’s “Stitch Attacks Snacks” lineup. The Stitch Attacks Snacks Lollipop collection launched today with the usual plush and pins, but Disney also offered a $10 off deal if you buy both plush characters. This seemingly indicates that they need to boost sales on this line. If you collect them their loss is your gain!
Stitch Attacks Snacks Lollipop Collection is the fourth release out of 12. I wonder if Disney will offer deals for the remaining eight series.
Let’s take a look! Stitch Attacks Snacks Lollipop Plush – $29.99
Stitch is approximately 12″ tall.
“Stitch attacks snacks! Next on his list? A Mickey Mouse Lollipop. The space invader has a ravenous appetite as he licks the sweet treat with intergalactic enthusiasm. One of the biggest brands on YouTube is planning a significant expansion, and has locked up a massive investment to do it.
Dude Perfect, perhaps best known for their elaborate trick shot videos on YouTube and other video platforms, have secured a nine-figure investment from Highmount Capital in a play to build out their business in new areas and to expand their core programming.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though a source pegged the value of the investment at greater than $100 million, a huge number for a brand originally built on YouTube.
“We’ve had a lot of dreams and big visions that we haven’t yet been able to tackle with the size team that we have, or the amount of capital that we’ve had so far, and so this was something that we’ve been looking into for the past year, and we were really excited when Highmount came along,...

Just think about it. You’ve booked a much-needed vacation at one of Vail Resorts’ various lovely snow-covered resorts. You’re ready to set out for a skiing adventure, and you see a Cast Member dressed as Mickey Mouse shredding the gnar with Goofy.
Oh, that’s not what you were expecting? Well, if the rumor is true that the Walt Disney Company has purchased Vail Resorts, get used to it.
A post on Reddit alleges that Disney has acquired the resort chain, which has locations in the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. CEO Bob Iger is probably trying to butter up shareholders by offering them ski holidays if they vote to keep Nelson Peltz out.
Iger was allegedly quoted saying:

Oh, what are the odds? Professional nuisance and YouTuber Jack Doherty has been kicked out of another theme park. Yesterday was Walt Disney World; today, it’s the competition.

In March 2019, Disney completed their purchase of Fox, effectively enacting one of the largest studio mergers in Hollywood history. This came after Disney had already made a major purchase from Marvel Comics a decade earlier, as well as the buyout of Lucasfilm in 2012. As of this writing, Disney sits on top of what might be the largest film library in Hollywood. Disney has used their massive library to milk as much IP as possible, returning to old franchises that have been successful in the past. Frustratingly, they haven't opened up their massive archive to the public via one of their streaming services; much of the old Fox catalog remains under lock and key.
Through the Fox purchase, Disney inherited many TV shows and feature films that don't quite fit in with their populist, family-friendly brand. Disney owns the "Alien" movies, for instance, as well as "Die Hard." It's mind-boggling to think that Dr.

Disney has announced that they will bring a new stage show to Epcot this summer called “¡Celebración Encanto!” This limited-time show will run from June 10 – September 6 at the CommuniCore Plaza stage. June 10 is also the date that the final Epcot walls will come down and CommuniCore Hall will open to the public.
The show will run a few times daily and will feature songs from the “Encanto” film. Since Bruno and Mirabel are shown, one of the songs is bound to be “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
The new stage and CommuniCore Hall will be a home base for the various festivals at Epcot. Mickey Mouse will also be there for meet and greets with his friends.
At least they finally are getting the walls down completely. The park has been in flux and under construction for several years.
What do you think? Comment and let us know!

More and more pop culture figures are slipping into the public domain, allowing anyone to reinterpret beloved characters. In 2022, Winnie-The-Pooh entered the public domain, and our cherished childhood friend was made into a vicious slasher villain at the center of a humorless bloodbath of a film, "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey." Meanwhile, Disney has so far managed to successfully prevent Mickey Mouse from entering the public domain despite the copyright partially expiring, while Superman and other iconic superheroes move closer and closer to becoming public IP.
In the case of another prominent pop culture figure, Sherlock Holmes, many of the stories featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective entered the public domain some time ago. Copyright typically lasts for the duration of an author's life plus 70 years, 120 years from the date of their creation, or 95 years from their publication date — whichever comes soonest. Is Yorgos Lanthimos’ horny fairytale Poor Things really available to stream on the home of straight-up fairytales, Disney+? Yes — kinda.
As of March 7th, the film has become available to stream on Disney+ in the UK, and on Hulu in the United States. But thanks to Disney+ and Hulu’s ongoing integration, viewers in the US with the bundle have the option to watch Poor Things directly on Disney+.
What’s notable about this is Poor Things’ graphic content. As Consequence’s Clint Worthington noted in his review, the film features “everything from rampant scenes of acrobatic sex to dismemberment and disfigurements of all sorts.” Throughout its narrative, main character Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) — a developing infant’s brain placed in a grown body — discovers masturbation, sexual pleasure, exploitation, and many grim aspects of the modern world.
Not a whole lot of this imagery is exactly what you’d imagine...

Despite Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto being classified as the five "main" characters in the Disney canon (aka "The Fab Five"), it's actually the barrel-chested Pete who arrived before them all in 1925. Originally, Pete was a bear but evolved into Mickey's archnemesis for a time before settling into his role as the loudmouth cat often playing opposite of Goofy as we know and love him today. This new affiliation began in 1992 with the animated series "Goof Troop," which followed Goofy as a single father after he and his son Max moved back to his hometown of Spoonerville. The family ends up moving next door to Pete, a used car salesman with the integrity of Harry Wormwood in "Matilda," his real-estate agent wife Peg, their son P.J., and daughter Pistol. Max and P.J. become fast friends, forcing the two families to connect, and inspiring plenty of hijinks because of it.

Some of the only Disneyland Resort workers who are not unionized announced today that they are organizing with Actors’ Equity Association. Ironically, they are among the most public-facing of the resort’s employees.
Calling themselves “Magic United,” Cast Members who work in the Disneyland resort’s Characters and Parades departments began circulating union authorization cards to 1,700 Cast Members and will seek voluntary recognition from Disney Resort Entertainment when a majority of the workers have signed.
Characters and Parades employees are those who roam the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or Elsa from Frozen. They bring characters to life in shows, parades, meet and greets and character dining experiences. Hosts, Trainers, Leads and other roles that support performers are also included in the effort. It’s worth noting that cast members who do the same work at Walt Disney World have been unionized for decades.

Buster Keaton was one of the most prolific filmmakers of the silent era, comparable only to his contemporaries Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. Unlike Lloyd with his distinctive spectacles or Chaplin with his signature stache, Keaton was identified by the emotionless expression he wore while enduring some of the most painful, dangerous, and hilarious bits of physical comedy the world has ever seen.
The filmmaker grew up as a vaudeville actor and took the stage as early as age four, where he first honed his slapstick skills in an act with his father. He was always known for taking hard falls without so much as a wince, which is how he earned his nickname, Buster, as an infant. As Keaton told it, legendary illusionist Harry Houdini gave him the nickname after an infant Keaton fell down a full flight of stairs without crying (a "buster" was a slang term for...

Before Mickey Mouse there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a Walt Disney character first introduced in 1927. Oswald was eventually replaced by Mickey Mouse, and the rest is history.
With the Mickey and Oswald characters now in the public domain, a handful of different horror projects have already popped up this year. And another one has been announced today.
Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, an upcoming horror film “depicting a sinister take on an iconic cartoon classic that encompasses the pure horror genre,” has released its teaser trailer this morning. And it’s a surprisingly effective teaser, channeling the look and feel of a classic black & white cartoon… with a horror twist. You can watch the first teaser down below.
Filmmaker and producer Lilton Stewart III and Lucinda Bruce are working with talent to finalize the roster for the film and will begin filming this spring, we’ve been told.

Formats come with expectations and assumptions – not always warranted, but they’re along for the ride already.
For example: Mickey Mouse: Zombie Coffee , a bande desinée by Régis Loisel, originally published by Éditions Glénat in France in 2016 in (waves hands) some format, possibly within Le Journal du Mickey , is laid out like a newspaper comic. Four panels across, most of the time, about four times wider than tall, two strips to a page, 137 strips total.
As an American comics reader, on first glance I assumed this was a little less than half a year of dailies in some newspaper, and my thought was “who knew there was a regular Mickey Mouse strip in French newspapers?”
But I think that’s wrong. I think these appeared in that magazine, weekly – maybe one at a time, maybe two or three on a page each issue – and that the strip format is either...

Fresh off his big wins at the Emmys for Last Week Tonight, John Oliver is building more buzz for the 2024 premiere of his HBO talk show, taunting Disney.
Now that Steamboat Willie’s version of Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, Oliver is freely using the character. Ahead of Oliver’s late-night show’s return in February, the show’s social media team shared an ad that features the host and a black-and-white Mickey Mouse.
“What are they gonna do, sue?” reads the copy on the image.
The image shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, was captioned with, “We’re back February 18th, and we’re pretty sure this was an okay way to let you know about it!! Ya, probably fine.”
