Johnny Cage, Mortal Kombat’s arrogant movie star, has become a fighting game icon over the decades. His signature sunglasses and cocky one-liners have become instantly recognizable and have become a character trait that has persisted through all the various reboots of the gaming series.
Very few fans know that the inspiration for this martial arts movie star came from Marvel Comics’ Iron Fist.
Mortal Kombat’s Johnny Cage Is Based on Marvel Comic’s Iron Fist
Johnny Cage retains his signature personality in the series reboot, Mortal Kombat 1.
Johnny Cage has been a staple of the Mortal Kombat series since his first appearance. Created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, Cage was originally made as a parody of the typical 1980s action hero, also drawing heavy influence from real-life martial artist and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. However, while crafting Cage’s persona, Boon also looked to a rather unexpected character – Iron Fist.

We've caught a few glimpses of Homelander in action in previous trailers for Mortal Kombat 1, but Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios has now debuted a new teaser revealing the first gameplay for upcoming downloadable content (Dlc), and it unveils The Boys character's hilariously gruesome Fatalities.
The trailer features the leader of The Seven squaring off against several classic Mk characters, as he unleashes his formidable superpowers to gain a victory before "finishing" them off in spectacularly gory fashion.
Homelander's peculiar fetish for drinking... a certain type of milk also carries over from the Prime Video series!
"Homelander is the most powerful being on the planet and the leader of The Seven, the elite superhero team owned and managed by Vought International," reads the official character breakdown. Whenever we think about blood, gore, and intense violence, only one name pops up in our mind: Mortal Kombat. NetherRealm’s iconic franchise is extremely popular among gamers and features some of the best fighting experiences ever. On the flip side, the Mortal Kombat movie, released in 2021, wasn’t that big of a success.
However, that hasn’t stopped Warner Bros. from taking a second chance and releasing another movie. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 is a fresh start and features big names Karl Urban and Jessica McNamee. While that’s all good, Warner Bros. has completely dropped the ball by not casting Dwayne Johson as Shao Kahn.

House Of The Dragon's Milly Alcock stars in the title role in the film and Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow will mark the second official film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe of movies.
The first film is of course Superman: Legacy which is set to release in the summer of 2025.
We’ve previously heard noises that this version of the character is going to be harder-edged than previous screen incarnations of the Supergirl character.

Last year, fans and critics welcomed Mortal Kombat 1 with a pretty amazing reception. Changing history once again is all possible with Liu Kang and his demigod powers to rewrite things as he pleases.
But this is not all good news. Some hardcore fans of the franchise did not love all the aspects of the game; certain details were not what they were waiting for. These fans found many of the character designs and stages to be quite bland. This discussion was very specific, with a description of all the things that this fan didn’t like. This was posted on X.

Marvel has had a plethora of franchises over the years but none of them could come close to the popularity matched by Ghost Rider, featuring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze. The first film was released in 2007 which was a massive hit, and four years later, it got a strange sequel titled Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. Though it was not a massive hit like the initial film, it was an intriguing watch as the film featured more action and watching Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze and his anti-hero avatar was an absolute blast.

It was heavily rumored that the character would have made its Marvel Cinematic Universe return in a TV Show. However, Marvel Studios decided to discard the character’s much-anticipated return as they butchered a number of popular titles that fans were looking forward to watching.

With Peacemaker making his way to Mortal Kombat 1 for all players tomorrow (those who purchased the Kombat Pack got the chance to play with him back on February 28), Warner Bros and NetherRealm have released a new behind-the-scenes video, providing an in-depth look at the upcoming antihero, as well as featuring Peacmaker actor John Cena sharing his experience in bringing his character to Mortal Kombat 1.
As expected, John Cena lends his voice and likeness to the Peacemaker, who brings a formidable moveset to Mortal Kombat 1, incorporating the character’s expert gunslinging skills, signature helmet abilities, and loyal bald eagle sidekick, Eagly. It’s all complemented by the character’s legendary dance moves and brash humor.
“Peacemaker is a character built for Mortal Kombat 1,” says Cena. “He is the definitive trash talker, he’s brash, and it’s a whole lot of attitude. To be in the Mortal Kombat 1 universe and to...

When it first came out in 1992, Mortal Kombat was the talk of the town. Every kid and their mother knew about it. Literally. The sheer violence and gore featured in the once-arcade game, had mothers taking to news outlets and politicians to get the game banned. Quite reminiscent of Kyle’s mom from South Park, one could say. Despite major censorship calls and aiding the birth of the Esrb, Mortal Kombat flourished, thanks in part to the controversies surrounding it.
Infamy of its gore aside, the game quickly became popular amongst players for its array of characters. The base roster still lives on in the modern iterations of the fighting game. Whether Liu Kang was your go-to or Thunder God Raiden, or perhaps Scorpion, everyone had their favorite pick. But amongst the ninjas and Gods alike, one character stood out that didn’t quite fit this bill… And that was Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat 1 was one of the major fighting games to come last year. This new entry resets all the lore and makes Liu Kang a literal god. The history and the new cameo system were very good additions to the franchise. With great collaborations with some popular Hollywood names, such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, who finally put his voice for Johnny Cage, and Megan Fox, Ed Boon’s title has now confirmed that a very anticipated feature will come soon to Mortal Kombat 1.

Peacemaker’s arrival in Mortal Kombat 1 is next week, and Netherrealm is finally giving fans a look at what the antihero is capable of in a new gameplay trailer released today. Modeled after and voiced by John Cena from his appearance in the HBO Max series and James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad, the trailer also features Janet Cage (a female version of Johnny Cage from an alternate timeline) as a Kameo fighter.
Peacemaker matches up with Johnny Cage in terms of his bravado and one-liners (including the trailer showing off Peacemaker’s dance moves from the opening to his HBO Max series), while also making use his helmet, shield and his pet bald eagle and sidekick Eagly to dish out punishment. Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which recently wrapped production after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes. This film will be bringing popular video game character Johnny Cage to the screen, with Karl Urban of Dredd, Star Trek, and The Boys taking on the role. Despite Urban’s established awesomeness, he was an unexpected choice for Johnny Cage, and there are some fans who have let it be known that they would have chosen someone else to play the part. We’ll have to wait and see how it turned out, but one thing we know right now is that Urban had a great time working on the movie, calling it “most action packed fun I’ve ever had on a film!”

Karl Urban marked the end of filming on Simon McQuoid‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 on his Instagram, calling it “the most action packed fun I’ve ever had” on a film. Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the follow-up to the 2021 film, also took the opportunity to show himself sans beard, which he’ll no doubt be growing back for The Boys, which will be returning for Season 4 later this year.
We’ve not seen a picture yet of Urban as everyone’s favourite action movie star, though MK2 producer Todd Garner had given us a peek of what to expect a few weeks back. Garner had taken to X last week to announce that filming had wrapped for the film, which according to Garner, won’t have a trailer out just yet.

It’s been two years since the release of the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, and a sequel is on the way soon. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 actually kicked off earlier this summer, you may recall, but it didn’t last long due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on at the time. But have no fear, because production on the movie sequel gets back underway real soon.
Responding to a report this week that suggested Mortal Kombat 2 will begin filming in early 2024, producer Todd Garner notes on Twitter that it’s actually kicking off even sooner.
“This is not true. We are filming before then,” Garner teases.
He writes in a follow-up tweet, “I promise I will keep the Mk Kommunity posted as soon as I have info on start date, etc. Everyone else is just speculating… or posting for clicks.”

For the latest instalment in its animated franchise, Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match, Warner Bros. takes us back to Los Angeles in the 80s where Johnny Cage, a C list action hero with an A list ego, is about to get his big break. Or was, until his co-star Jennifer Grey doesn’t show up for filming.
Johnny and his nerdy assistant Brian go over to her mansion to convince her to return to the set. As they drive, Johnny relates a Karate Kid like story of how he got into the martial arts and ended up in Hollywood. Mortal Kombat 1 fans waiting for the guest Kombat Pack fighters to arrive have gotten a taste of what’s to come with a new gameplay trailer, showcasing upcoming guest fighter Omni-Man. Inspired by the Invincible comic book and Amazon Prime animated series, Omni-Man is once again voiced by J. K. Simmons, and is expected to arrive for Mortal Kombat 1 in November as first playable character in the Kombat Pack.
The new trailer also shows off Tremor as a Dlc Kameo Fighter who will also be available as part of the Kombat Pack. And yes, we get a couple of references to the Invincible animated series, including Omni-Man’s fatalities, which are directly lifted from the show.
Still to come for the Kombat Pack are Quan Chi, Ermac and Takeda Takahashi, with guest characters Peacemaker (based on his appearance in The Suicide Squad & “Peacemaker” series), and Homelander (based on the...

Keanu Reeves won’t get over here or give up his spine anytime soon, as he refuses to lend his characters to the Mortal Kombat series. But it’s not for a lack of trying, as the minds behind the newly released Mortal Kombat 1 made the attempt to get John Wick in the game.
Ed Boon recently told Rolling Stone that he and Warner Bros. Games envisioned getting Wick in Mortal Kombat partly as a throwback to the fighting game franchise’s origins. “When we were making Mortal Kombat (1992), the whole team was in the midst of Bloodsport, Enter the Dragon, and all the Terminator movies. I could certainly see the John Wicks of the world… as a matter of fact, that is one of the ones that we tried to get – John Wick – in Mortal Kombat, and we didn’t get it.” Keanu Reeves has been actively against allowing...

When I booted up Mortal Kombat 1, I had no idea what was in store for me. In the months leading up to release, developer Netherrealm Studios had been positioning the game as a massive reinvention of the Mortal Kombat franchise with the introduction of the game’s new timeline reset and the “Kameo” system that allows players to bring in an additional fighter to use for assistance during combat. There was a very real fear that the series was moving too far away from everything that made the more recent entries in the franchise so great.
What I truly didn’t expect from Mortal Kombat 1, however, was the best damn entry in the franchise since 2011, and a game that leans more into the series’ roots than you might realize.
A Return to Form
Let’s be real, Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11 were bogged down by unsatisfying mechanics that distracted from the core combat.

Mortal Kombat is a prolific fighting franchise. Despite the upcoming game’s Mortal Kombat 1 title, it is actually the twelfth mainline game in the series, and that number doesn’t account for the various spinoffs and countless upgrades. Then you have all the comics, movies, TV shows, web shows, techno albums, and other stuff that grew out of the series. From Liu Kang fighting a stop-motion Goro in a dingy dungeon to seeing him reinvent the entire universe, Mortal Kombat has seen some stellar highs and embarrassing lows.
What I’m saying is, Mortal Kombat is…a lot. So, as we prepare for Liu Kang and Shang Tsung’s war over the rebooted Earthrealm, let’s talk about some lesser-known parts of the franchise that you might not know about.
15. The Johnny Cage/Guile Connection

It took more than 20 years, but it's finally happening: Jean-Claude Van Damme is coming to "Mortal Kombat." This is not a drill! Warner Bros. Games released a new trailer for the upcoming "Mortal Kombat 1," the latest entry in the long-running fighting game series. It focuses on Van Damme, who will be portraying a version of fan-favorite Johnny Cage in the game with a special character skin. It's a fitting role for the star of such movies as "Bloodsport" and "Kickboxer," and they are letting the actor unleash his skills in an appropriately brutal fashion.
The trailer (which you can check out below) shows off Van Damme's version of Cage absolutely whipping ass in various fights. Those signature kicks are on full display, with extra bloody results. We even get to see him teaming up with Scorpion a few times for some wildly brutal, over-the-top finishing moves. It's Van Damme in...

If you were wondering just when we’d finally get footage of Jean-Claude Van Damme doing what he does best in Mortal Kombat 1, wonder no more. NetherRealm has released a new trailer providing a preview of Van Damme’s likeness and voice in the game as a character skin for Johnny Cage.
It’s a bit surreal seeing Van Damme decked out in his (altered) Bloodsport gear doing Johnny Cage mannerisms before facing off against the character that was inspired by The Muscles from Brussels himself. But you have to admit that it’s also so frickin’ cool.
And yes, just in case you were also wondering, we do get Van Damme doing the famous Split Punch on Johnny Cage. Van Damme’s likeness also adds a bit of hilarity to Cage’s Fatality. Vroom-vroom, indeed.

The release of Mortal Kombat 1 is just around the corner, and it was confirmed today that Megan Fox has lent her voice to Nitara. The vampire comes from the realm of Vaeternus and joins the fight to protect her race. You can check out a gruesome gameplay video of Nitara in action below, which also features Megan Fox talking about joining the Mortal Kombat franchise.
“She comes from this weird realm, she is a type of vampire creature,” Megan Fox said in the video. “She’s evil but she’s also good. She’s trying to save her people. I really like her. She’s a vampire which obviously resonates for whatever reason. It’s cool to be in the game, you know? Because I’m not really just voicing it, it’ll be like she’s kind of me.“

After that trip down memory lane yesterday with the new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, WB Games and NetherRealm have released a new behind-the-scenes video featuring Dave Bautista playing the game ahead of its September 19th release.
“Obviously, my voice is gone now from screaming ‘Mortal Kombat’ all day,” says Bautista during the gameplay session. “But I love this because it directly connects me to my past. So it’s more personal and feels more gratifying.”
Bautista elaborates, saying that growing up, his favourite character was Liu Kang because of Kang’s bicycle kick, and because he was able to morph into a dragon for his famous Mortal Kombat II fatality. “I like Scorpion now because I just want to hear him say ‘Get over here!’ (laughs).”

The Boys Karl Urban has been confirmed as Johnny Cage for the upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel. For the most part, fans weren’t particularly thrilled that the acting veteran was chosen for the role. In fact, fans feel that Urban suits the arrogant and snarky Kano better. They may not be wrong. Karl Urban is physically perfect as a Kano, and he’ll match the snark and cunning attitude of the Black Dragon fighter with ease. At first glance, it does come across as a mistake casting Karl Urban as the popular Cage. On the flip side, audiences thought Heath Ledger and...

It’s interesting to note that Herriman previously voiced the role of Kabal in the 2021 film.

Johnny Cage is an action movie star and martial artist who first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992. The character didn’t appear in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, but a post-credit scene teased that he would be on his way. It was announced earlier this year that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. I’m excited to see the actor in costume for the first time, but I have no doubt that he’s going to knock the role out of the park.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match: Joel McHale, Jennifer Grey lead the cast of R-rated animated film
Warner Bros. Animation is keeping their series of R-rated animated films based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise rolling at a steady pace. We got Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge in 2020, Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms in 2021, and Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind in 2022. Later this year, they’ll be releasing Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match – and while the Motion Picture Association has confirmed they’ve given this one an R rating, IGN has learned that Joel McHale – who voices lead character Johnny Cage after also providing the character’s voice in Scorpion’s Revenge and Battle of the Realms – is joined by a voice cast that includes Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey – as herself!
Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match has earned its R rating with “bloody violence and language“.
The film has the following synopsis: Neon lights… Suits with shoulder pads… Jumping from explosions in slow motion…...

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is returning to the helm for the sequel that we’ll refer to as Mortal Kombat 2 until someone tells us otherwise. Filming on this follow-up is expected to begin soon (unless the writers strike causes a delay), and over the last month and a half McQuoid has been steadily building up his cast. The Boys star Karl Urban has been cast to play Johnny Cage; Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to play Princess Kitana; and Tati Gabrielle (You) is taking on the role of Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana. Now Deadline reports that four more actors have joined the cast, filling the roles of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel, Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, and Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.
