The Calling aims to be a different kind of cop show. Not just in the sense that it has season-long narrative arcs as opposed to the one-and-done episodes of crime procedurals, but also in the way its main character, Avi (Jeff Wilbusch) approaches crime. The David E. Kelley-produced drama is streaming now on Peacock. Ahead of the premiere, executive producers Jason Horwitch and Jonathan Shapiro (who also writes for the series) explained how they made The Calling different from other shows in the genre. Kelley serves as executive producer, showrunner, and writer for The Calling, based on the Israeli author Dror Mishani’s Avi Avraham novels. It tells the story of NYPD Detective Avraham “Avi” Avraham, whose belief in mankind is his metaphorical superpower when it comes to uncovering the truth. Avi is guided by a deep sense of spirituality and religious principles, leaving him to question his own...

Theoretically, what sets Peacock’s The Calling apart from the gazillions of other cop dramas already in existence is that its protagonist, Avi (Jeff Wilbusch), is not only deeply religious, but guided by his Jewish faith in his work as a detective. When a greener colleague, Janine (Juliana Canfield), comments in the premiere on his knack for drawing out a suspect by expressing compassion, Avi rejects the notion that it’s merely a professional “trick.”
“The Talmud teaches us to see a single human being as the whole world, that each person is entitled to infinite respect and concern. Everyone is precious,” he loftily informs her, and he means it.
But The Calling, from David E. Kelley, seems only so interested in exploring the nuanced relationship between Avi’s beliefs and Avi’s job, or for that matter in ethical or emotional complications of any sort.

Peacock’s just released the first trailer for the upcoming drama The Calling from David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies). The Calling, which was given a straight-to-series order back in October 2021, is adapted from Dror Mishani’s bestselling Avraham Avraham book series and stars Jeff Wilbusch (Unorthodox) as the fictional NYPD detective.
“Dror Mishani wrote a riveting and emotionally complicated series of books, the center of which is Avraham. Avi is a deeply mysterious, spiritual, and compelling detective unlike any protagonist I’ve encountered before. Jeff Wilbusch brings him to rich and hypnotic life in front of the camera, and behind the camera Barry Levinson is… Barry Levinson. What a privilege to have him at the helm. Add Hans Zimmer to the mix, and the final product is something we hope thrills, moves, and instills a bit of hope in the audience,” said writer, executive producer, and showrunner David E.

The first look of David E. Kelley’s investigative drama series “The Calling” were released Monday by Peacock, offering a glimpse into the show ahead of its Nov. 10 debut on the streamer.
Adapted from a series of novels by author Dror Mishani, the show’s plot follows a New York Police Department detective named Avraham Avraham (Jeff Wilbush), who typically relies on spirituality to guide his pursuit of truth until one investigation makes him rethink his beliefs.
The series stars Wilbush, Juliana Canfield, Karen Robinson and Michael Mosley.
One image highlights a particularly tense, yet slightly absurd moment where Wilbush is locked hands with a man wearing a hotdog suit in what looks like the context of an interrogation.
Behind the production is showrunner, writer and executive producer Kelley, whose lengthy career includes series such as “Picket Fences,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal” and “Big Little Lies.” Barry Levinson will also...

When legendary producer David E. Kelley calls a series of crime novels “riveting,” it’s a safe bet he’ll be turning them into equally compelling television. Enter The Calling. Loosely based on The Missing File from Israeli author Dror Mishani, the drama (once titled The Missing) looks at spiritual, introspective, compassionate, uniquely named NYPD detective Avraham Avraham, a special investigator in Brooklyn’s diverse Crown Heights neighborhood. “Avi is a very complex character,” the Israeli-born Wilbusch says. His calling is solving missing persons and homicide cases through uncanny observational abilities. He’s also devoted to his work family: eager rookie detective Janine Harris, acerbic veteran cop Earl Malzone and supportive boss Capt. Helen Davies. While Wilbusch says the series retains plenty of Kelley’s signature offbeat humor, the cases reveal Avi as a “haunted soul” who does his work ...

Melissa Barrera braves the elements in Keep Breathing, a gripping tale of survival coming to Netflix July 28. The In the Heights star shows herself in a brand new light in the rugged six-episode story, most of which she acted in alone. In Keep Breathing, Barrera plays New York lawyer Liv, a workaholic who doesn’t let anyone in. After her private plane crashes in the remote Canadian frontier, she finds herself as the lone survivor. Liv must battle both an unforgiving wilderness and past personal demons to stay alive in the survival thriller. Barrera had her work cut out for her in this show. As if plunging into freezing cold water and exerting her body to the point of exhaustion weren’t daunting enough, she had to deliver a compelling emotional performance to boot. For TV critics, this week’s theme is less-buzzy new versions of some of the buzziest shows of the past year. It will be a fun game to see how many reviews discuss Peacock’s The Resort without mentioning HBO’s The White Lotus in the first paragraph (when the more apt comparison is actually Apple TV+’s Acapulco) or Amazon’s Paper Girls without mentioning Netflix’s Stranger Things (when the more apt comparison is actually Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club).
The answer may be close to “zero.” (I won’t even try when it comes to Paper Girls.)
I have at least successfully avoided mentioning Showtime’s Yellowjackets until several sentences into my review of Netflix’s Keep Breathing, a so-called limited series that is unquestionably most easily described as a one-woman version of Yellowjackets without any of the sensationalistic — or “fun,...

Say this much about “Keep Breathing”: It’s admirably immune to streaming-era bloat.
Could its story, of a woman confronting the pain of her past while trying to stay alive after a plane crash, have been told in a ninety-minute film? Well, sure. But in six episodes that hew pretty close to the half-hour mark, the series makes its points, underlines them a couple of times, and then moves on.
Here, Melissa Barrera plays Liv, who is clinging to life (get it?). Liv had the misfortune to wheedle her way into a seat on a small plane headed into a remote area of Canada, which — after an astoundingly unconvincing crash that indicates just how little Netflix is spending on its non-marquee content — becomes her new home. Like a grown-up, corporate-lawyer version of the protagonist of the YA classic novel “Hatchet,” Liv is surprisingly adept at delving into her own...

Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes: "Margo, who comes from a noble family, inherited a castle that she inspects with her ill-tempered husband Dieter. When they arrive at the run-down keep, their relationship is put to a test as their sanity slowly deteriorates. This opens up a new world. As time and space begin to shift around them, a reality that only exists within the walls of the eerie building is exposed - a reality full of warmth and excess.
Things aren't as they seem in this genre-bending film, that shifts between different story layers in unpredictable ways. It is a love letter to European cinema of the sixties and seventies that will leave viewers guessing what will happen next. "

"Renovating this place will cost us a fortune." Dark Sky has revealed a trailer for Dawn Breaks Behind The Eyes, a horror thriller film from filmmaker Kevin Kopacka arriving on VOD this summer. This first premiered at Fright Fest in the UK last year. Having just inherited a run down castle, a melancholic woman and her bad tempered husband choose to spend the night before deciding what to do with the creaky, cobwebbed pile. But after horrendous mutilation, reality shifts and a Lovely Sort of Death fast approaches… Get ready to have your mind blown by a fantasy freak-out and an Acid Frog, Gandalf and Liquid Brain Orchestra soundtrack." Starring Anna Platen,...

“Oslo” tells the story behind the iconic photo of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasir Arafat shaking hands on the White House lawn in 1993. The new TV movie from HBO dramatizes the top-secret negotiations that led to the historic Oslo Accords, a milestone in the ever-winding road to peace in the Middle East.
The movie is an adaptation of J.T. Rogers’s Tony-winning play of the same name, which centers on the Norweigan couple who brought representatives from Israel and Palestine together for the back-channel meetings that would eventually culminate in the signing of the Oslo Accords, the first formal mutual recognition between Israel and the Plo.
As with any based-on-a-true-story flick, the subjects’ lives are much fuller than a two-hour narrative can afford to flesh out. Before you stream “Oslo,” read up on some of the real people behind the historical drama.
