Clint Eastwood is back in the nation’s theaters once again, but you won’t see him on screen. His latest film, “The 15:17 to Paris” is a biographical suspense drama based on the 2015 terrorist attack on a Thalys train headed to Paris. Three American soldiers (Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos) thwarted the terrorist and were declared heroes by the French Government. In a bold move, Eastwood cast the trio of heroes to play themselves in the film, but as a director, Eastwood is no stranger to bold moves.
For over half a century Eastwood has been one of the world’s greatest movie stars. Comfortable in both westerns and contemporary roles, his measured growl of a voice has been a key part in creating such iconic characters as The Man With No Name and Dirty Harry.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Clint Eastwood turns a terrorist attack into a bit of post-hoc reality “entertainment” with the stunt casting of the actual heroes as themselves in a stilted, tone-deaf piece of Christian-American propaganda. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

There is no question that what Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone did on an Amsterdam-to-Paris train in August 2015 is worthy of praise, respect, and the highest commendation: they subdued a terrorist shooter and kept him in custody until the authorities arrived. But this is no way to honor them. Director Clint Eastwood (Sully, American Sniper) tells the story of their deed as a stilted, tone-deaf piece of blatant...

Chicago – What’s up with Clint Eastwood, and why in the Sam Hill did he attach himself as director to this film? Also, why was the decision made to use the actual rescuers as the actors in a true terrorist train incident? Nothing adds up in the strangely disconnected “15:17 to Paris.”

Before the train heroics, there are three major acts of this film. First, a childhood backstory for the three eventual heroes, which is about as awkward as it sounds, and contains odd castings of B-level TV “names.” Second, the real dudes take over the story of their lives, and it illogically focuses on Spencer Stone and his journey through the Air Force. Third, and the gosh darn weirdest part, is the travelogue that two of the dudes take before they meet up with the third hero in Amsterdam, and board the ill-fated train together. The length and...

Three Us tourists who foiled a terror attack on a French train play themselves. Poor call by director Clint Eastwood
It seems that evil doesn’t have a monopoly on banality. This woefully misjudged quasi-experimental film by Clint Eastwood, which celebrates the real-life heroism, in 2015, of three American tourists in Europe, is arse-numbingly dull. A key problem is that Eastwood casts the three friends, Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, as themselves. God bless them, they may be the bravest men ever to interrupt an interrailing holiday to tackle an armed terrorist. But they have not an iota of screen presence between them.
And since the actual act of heroism is over in a matter of minutes, there is a lot of thuddingly tedious padding to plough through in order to haul the story up to feature length. A considerable chunk of the first act is dedicated to their...

In every sense of the phrase, the newest Clint Eastwood film feels like a one-of-one. The gimmick of The 15:17 to Paris alone grounds it to the specificity of one particular moment: three men (Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos) play themselves acting out their part in the 2015 event in which they thwarted a massacre on a train. But in the sense that the film is tied so intensely to these three individuals, and that it has no story requirements other than to include the train attack at some point, The 15:17 to Paris imparts feelings onto the viewer in a way that is unique in the modern cinema. Faced with the task of condensing the experience of three lives into just over an hour of pre-attack footage, Eastwood abandons plot and almost entirely forgoes dramatic causality. The story moves like a shapeless riff, until it doesn’t. It...

Two-time Best Director Oscar winner Clint Eastwood’s latest film, “The 15:17 to Paris,” starts screening nationwide tomorrow, February 9. The thriller revisits an August 2015 terrorist attack that a Moroccan man, armed with a rifle and a box cutter, carried out aboard an Amsterdam-departing train. Five of the passengers — including three Americans — worked to restrain the suspect. Of the train’s 554 passengers, only four sustained injuries, including the attacker, Ayoub El Khazzani.
This is Eastwood’s third homage in a row to heroic patriots (the others were “American Sniper” and “Sully”). After making more than 40 features, the 87-year-old decided to try a new approach, casting non-actors Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and and Alec Skarlatos, the aforementioned trio, who received medals for their valor from the Obama administration. Eastwood’s Warner Bros.-distributed film is an adaptation of their 2016 memoir of the same name, written with journalist Jeffrey E. Stern.

Review: ‘The 15:17 to Paris’ Brings Authenticity, Dullness to Clint Eastwood’s Portrayals of Heroism
Social media discourse around The 15:17 to Paris has already positioned it as the first big cinematic culture war flashpoint of the year. But while liberal thinkpiecers and conservative fans alike will be able to find plenty of moments to thump their chests over, it doesn’t really feel as though director Clint Eastwood is aiming for any big statements about America or terrorism or what have you. That doesn’t mean any of them will necessarily be wrong for reading jingoism or affirmations of traditional values in the subtext or text. It’s just that, for example, characters are seen praying not as a dog whistle for Christian audiences but simply because that’s what their real-life selves would do. (And sure, it can be both, but it comes more matter of fact than pointed.)
Of course, in this film, the distinction between real-life self and movie self is ambiguous,...

“The 15:17 to Paris” starts with some of Clint Eastwood’s worst filmmaking in years and closes with some of his best. In Eastwood’s ambling look at heroism and civic duty, he revisits the famous 2015 instance in which a trio of young Americans stopped a gunman on a train from Brussels, casting the actual men involved to play themselves. The bulk of the drama leading up to the central event often has a stifling quality, marred by heavy-handed foreshadowing and bland monologues about the existential quandaries of young adulthood. However, at 89, Eastwood remains a deeply purposeful filmmaker, and “The 15:17 to Paris” clearly has a plan — it builds to a riveting showdown, with a unique kind of payoff enhanced by the authenticity of its design. It’s a fascinating gamble even when it doesn’t hold together.

Three young Americans who bravely foiled an attack on a train play themselves in a drama that focuses too much on their excruciatingly dull backstories
The authentic courage of three American heroes who foiled a terrorist attack has been anti-alchemised by Clint Eastwood into a strangely boring, dramatically inert film in which the main characters remain as opaque and unreadable as sphinxes to the very last.
But there is some interest in this film nonetheless because of the experimental chutzpah Eastwood has showed in using – not Chris Hemsworth, not Bradley Cooper, not Trevante Rhodes – but the three actual guys stolidly playing themselves. (The attacker, one Ayoub El-Khazzani, being now incarcerated, was not available for filming.) The resulting film looks bizarrely like an essay in take-it-or-leave-it social realist grit or radical, non-professional clunkiness, as if before filming Clint watched Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake and Tommy Wiseau’s The Room...

It’s never easy having to admit defeat after sitting through 90 minutes of a film willing it to get better, only for it to keep on getting worse by every passing second. Despite purporting to tell a touching story about bravery and heroism in the eye of mindless violence, Clint Eastwood’s latest offering as director, The 15:17 To Paris, is not only baffling in its sloppiness, but also fails on all accounts and ultimately winds up looking embarrassingly amateurish. All of which begs the question, how was this ever allowed to see the light of day?

It’s impossible to say how tragic the situation might have been on Thalys train 9364 on August 21, 2015, had three Americans — Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone — not stepped in to intercept a terrorist sporting enough will and ammunition to cause countless deaths. But a few minutes of nail-biting, recreated heroism isn’t enough to justify the other 90-or-so minutes in Clint Eastwood’s dry salute of a movie, “The 15:17 to Paris,” which struggles to mix patriotism, friendship, God, and destiny into something meaningful. Unlike the weighty punch of the director’s last couple of true bravery stories,...

Clint Eastwood’s latest film “The 15:17 to Paris” stages a daring casting stunt. It tells the story of three American soldiers, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos, who thwarted a terrorist attack aboard a train bound for Paris. And Eastwood cast Stone, Sadler and Skarlatos to play themselves and relive their heroics of that day. But Eastwood’s stunt isn’t without precedent, as other veterans throughout history have played themselves or versions of themselves on film. No matter your opinion on the directing career of Clint Eastwood, it’s impossible not to admire the pace he keeps. At 87 years old, he’s shown no sign of slowing down, essentially putting out a film every other year. It’s not the yearly pace of fellow octogenarian Woody Allen, but it’s not far off. With a new movie opening this week in The 15:17 to Paris, it seems only appropriate to talk about Eastwood a bit, specifically Eastwood the director. He’s an Oscar winner, after all, so even his newest seems like little more than popcorn entertainment, he’s certainly capable of more than one sort of movie. His new film, obviously, is The 15:17 to Paris. Based on a true story, this is the long-is plot description that IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes has: “In the early evening of August 21, 2015, the world watched in stunned silence...

It’s no surprise that the three brave men who stopped a terrorist attack on a train to Paris in 2015 frequently look back on that fateful day.
