Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper is a baffling clash of two incompatible visions. The film is partly presented as a glum bit of kitchen-sink realism, tracing the hard-knock life of 12-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell) in the aftermath of her mother’s death. But it’s also pitched as a twee indie dramedy, showing that Georgie has gotten by on her own in much the same way that so many quirky movie children have had to function like miniature adults.
At its most serious, the film watches as Georgie cleans her cramped apartment before then going off with an older boy, Ali (Alin Uzun), to steal bike parts and sell them for money. She’s never known her father, Jason (Harris Dickinson), and then one day he crawls over her backyard fence and demands to stay with her. From such moments, Scrapper swings discordantly toward the cutesy, as when Georgie tries to...

Clarkson’s Farm producer Expectation is adapting for TV comedian Pope Lonergan’s memoir about a decade spent caring for the elderly.
In I’ll Die After Bingo, the award-winning author provided a no-holds barred account, whether initiating a coup d’état against new regulations with the residents or forging a bond with a 98-year old who once called him a “fat slut.”
Lonergan said the TV version will be “both light and dark; uncompromising, poetic and very funny.” Writer of the TV version has not yet been set.
Expectation Exec Morwenna Gordon added: “I was completely won over by Pope’s writing. Honest, insightful, empathetic and with laugh out loud moments too. I’m so pleased to be working together to adapt this incredible book for TV.”
Lonergan is a comedian and writer who has also taken his memoir on a stand-up tour titled The Care Home Tour.

This post contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso."
"Ted Lasso" was adept at delivering the thrills of a sports drama, with the fall and rise of an underground English football team, while also telling a beautiful story about community, mental health, self-improvement, and being open about emotions.
After three seasons, "Ted Lasso" is seemingly, apparently, as far as we know, done and over. After two very strong seasons, the final season was a very mixed bag, with a lack of focus thanks to longer episodes that dragged on, a sermon-of-the-week format that seemed to take away from the joy of earlier seasons, and a misguided football story that was too obsessed with winning — until it wasn't.
This is (kind of) a football show, of course, meaning the characters' careers and stories carry on after the end of the finale. We know Ted Lasso's career at AFC Richmond is over,...

[This story contains spoilers for “Signs,” the fifth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.
Hunt’s answer: “I mean, you’ve seen the show before. You know how it goes.”
In “Signs,” the show’s fifth episode of season three, it went. Or rather, he went: After firing up the team before a match with powerhouse Manchester City — by basically repeating the same idea Jamie (Phil Dunster) offered up moments before — Zava no-shows for the match. (“Maybe he’s dead,” Ted muses on the sideline. “He fucking better be,” Roy growls.) He later explains to his social media followers — ahem, “believers” — that he’s retiring to focus solely on his family and his avocado farm.

British Asian actor and writer Ambreen Razia has secured a development deal with Expectation Entertainment (BAFTA-winning series “Alma’s Not Normal”) to write an original comedy drama series about addiction and postpartum depression between a South Asian mother and daughter.
The series, which has the working title “Wasted,” will follow the story of a junior doctor and the ancestral legacy which looms over today’s generation of Muslim immigrants.
As an actor Razia most recently played Shandy Fine in hit Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso.” Razia’s previous writing credits include “Hounslow Diaries” for BBC Three, which was adapted from the stage play “Diary of a Hounslow Girl,” a project that looked at the lives of modern Muslim girls in London. Recent stage plays include “Pot” and “Favour.” She has also been part of the writers’ room for Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning series “We Are Lady Parts,” directed by Nida Manzoor,...

[This story contains spoilers for season three, episode two of Ted Lasso.]
The second episode of Ted Lasso’s third season puts the title character on the sidelines for much of its running time, focusing instead on Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Roy (Brett Goldstein) and a couple new additions to the AFC Richmond locker room.
One of those newcomers is someone the show has previously introduced: Trent Crimm (James Lance), no longer of The Independent. Trent pitches writing a book about Richmond’s return to the Premier League for the season, which Ted agrees to over the strenuously mimed objections of Rebecca, Higgins (Jeremy Swift) and Keeley (Juno Temple).
Most of “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea” — taking its title from the Elvis Costello and the Attractions song — takes place, however, not at Richmond’s home base but at Stamford Bridge, the home of top-flight club (in the Lasso-verse, if not the current real-life Premier League table) Chelsea. As Apple TV+ prepped to roll out the blue carpet in Westwood this week for the Season 3 premiere of its Emmy Award-winning comedy juggernaut Ted Lasso, one question lingered in the air: Is this the end?
Ahead of the Tuesday night event, Ted Lasso himself, co-creator, star and executive producer Jason Sudeikis, got ahead of the inevitable press line interrogation to make it clear that the time on the Richmond scoreboard is, indeed, running out. “This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell,” Sudeikis told Deadline.
The 12-episode season debuts March 15 and continues through May 31, and while options remain on the field for spinoffs and future iterations (Richmond Till We Die, anyone?), Sudeikis made it clear that this is his final bow as the beloved “aw shucks” Midwesterner turned English Premier League soccer coach but he believes there is more life left.

Let’s get it out of the way now, because comparisons are inevitably going to be made between British writer-director Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper, a competitor in the world cinema section at Sundance, and fellow Brit Charlotte Wells’ feature debut Aftersun, which emerged on the festival circuit last fall. Both of these mono-titled films made by women named Charlotte revolve around working-class adolescent girls and their respective single-parent fathers goofing off during over summer vacation. Viewers who don’t track movies as closely as festival goers and trade consumers are bound to get them mixed up. It’s important that you, dear reader, help to clear up any confusion: Aftersun is an almost miraculous work of beauty and Scrapper is a sweet bit of fluff that’s trying too hard to be funny and offbeat and ends up being too often simply annoying.
That said, there are qualities to enjoy in Scrapper.

A David Tennant-fronted comedy drama, a multi-character sitcom from the writer of Paddington 2, a comedy crime thriller featuring Episodes’ Daisy Haggard and a raft of new talent form part of the BBC’s latest comedy drive.
The British public broadcaster has unveiled its new slate of comedies across its channels BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four. This comes as BBC comedy chief Shane Allen tells Deadline that by making shows that are quintessentially British, they are increasingly traveling to the U.S. and internationally without the need to be remade.
On BBC One, Paddington 2’s Simon Farnaby and his colleagues behind Horrible Histories and Yonderland are producing Ghosts, a multi-character sitcom. Farnaby, Mathew Baynton, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond are working with Monumental Television on the six-part horror comedy, which follows a group of restless spirits squabbling in a crumbling country house.
