Cluj-Napoca has been home for the Transylvania Open for just two seasons, but it has garnered a reputation as the best Wta 250 in the past year.
Now in its third edition, which will run from October 16th to 22nd , we are guaranteed a new champion. That is because last year's winner Anna Blinkova is extending her spell in Asia, while the inaugural champion Anett Kontaveit retired from professional tennis this season at the age of 27.
The tournament has received a big blow in its player participation. Caroline Garcia and Donna Vekic have withdrawn due to injuries, therefore the seeds will now shuffle a bit. Romania's Sorana Cirstea will now spearhead the 28-player field in her home tournament, and the draw for the event has been released.
Cirstea will start her campaign against the highly-talented Eva Lys. But the young German's recent retirement in Seoul leaves a major question mark on her fitness coming to Cluj-Napoca.

The Japan Championships being held in Osaka returns to the calendar once again, after four long years.
The draw for the 2023 tournament was revealed with a handful of intriguing matches to look up to. Without the established cadre of top 50 players (outside one entrant), this could be a massive opportunity for the Wta 's undercards to lift a rare trophy at Tour level.
Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko has pulled out from the event and has since been replaced by Panna Udvardy. She was meant to be the top seed, but that honor will now go to Lin Zhu , one of China's most improved players this year.
The seedings have been reshuffled, with another withdrawal - Peyton Stearns, who recently broke through to the second week of the US Open. Stearns' place has gone to fellow American Ashlyn Krueger, who was among the early alternates.

The 2023 Guangzhou Open will officially herald the return of Tour-level tennis back on Chinese soil.
For the first time in four years, we'll have tournaments taking place in China , and the 17th edition of the Guangzhou Open will have a new home at the aesthetically built Nansha International Tennis Center. It will be held from September 18th to 23rd on hard courts and it is part of the Wta 250 series.
The tournament was last played in 2019 at the Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center, where Sofia Kenin won her third title of that season. Unless Kenin takes a late wild card into the tournament, she won't be coming back to Guangzhou.
The draw features a 32-player singles field. Despite a lack of prominent names, Poland's Magda Linette is the highest-ranked player in the draw at No. 24. Linette tends to do well in Asia, winning one of her two career titles in that...

Elina Svitolina is back to winning ways at the US Open , getting her first win since 2021, ending a mini-losing streak by beating Anna-Lena Friedsam .
Elina Svitolina didn't have an ideal preparation for the US Open, with an early exit in Montreal and then a minor injury that left her unable to play in Cincinnati. The Ukrainian returned in high spirits to New York by taking part in the US Open charity event for Ukraine.
Her first competitive match proved another pleasurable experience as she easily bested Friedsam in two sets to advance to the second round. The opening set went 6-3 to Svitolina as the players put forward a completely different effort.
Svitolina was amazing, with 11 winners and only 2 unforced errors. Friedsam was pretty bad, with only four winners and 12 unforced errors. Things didn't go that much better in the second set as Svitolina kept applying the pressure and her opponent simply couldn't deal.

The 2023 Strasbourg Open, an important prelude to the Roland Garros, promises a lot of action as the draw was released.
From May 21st to 27th, players meet at the Wta 250 event in Strasbourg, which gives them the last chance to improve their form ahead of the second Grand Slam of the season.
