The newly rebooted Taormina Film Festival kicked off on Friday night in the Sicilian city’s landmark Teatro Antico amphitheatre in an unusual but magnificent style with benefit event “Pavarotti Forever”.
Placido Domingo, who was part of the famed The Three Tenors trio with Pavarotti and José Carreras, was among those celebrating the memory of the super-tenor in an event mixing filmed archive material and live performances.
The 82-year-old Spanish star was joined on stage by Italian opera singer Vittorio Grigolo, long tipped as Pavarotti’s successor, and a host of other top classical music stars including Marcelo Àlvarez, Aida Garifullina and Andrea Griminelli.
Talking to Deadline after the concert, Domingo admitted it was emotional singing and then looking up at the big screen to see interviews and performances from the former maestro.

It’s only the first day of the FIFA World Cup, but scandal is already underway for the games held in Russia this year.
During the opening ceremony on Thursday, U.K. pop star Robbie Williams gave the middle finger to the camera while performing on the field at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow ahead of the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia. Russia won 5-0.
Singing a slew of his hits, Williams turned directly to the camera during his performance of “Rock DJ,” clearly changing the lyrics to “I did this for free” before lifting up his finger.
Fox released a statement condemning and apologizing for the gesture:
“The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony was a newsworthy event produced by a third party and carried live on Fox. As it was broadcast live, we did not know what would happen during Robbie Williams’ performance and we apologize.”

Updated with Fox statement: The opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup today featured a welcome speech by Russian President Vladimir Putin, lots of dancing, and UK pop star Robbie Williams flipping the bird – and Fox is sorry for that.
The gesture came as Williams performed on the field at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow ahead of the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia, which kicked off the tournament that runs through July 15. It apparently didn’t air in the UK but it very much did live on U.S. airwaves on Fox.
“The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony was a newsworthy event produced by a third party and carried live on Fox,” a spokesperson for Fox Sports told Deadline on Thursday. “As it was broadcast live, we did not know what would happen during Robbie Williams’ performance and we apologize.”
The Rupert Murdoch-owned company and Telemundo hold U.

Friday 6th May sees the release of Florence Foster Jenkins, the 1944 set true story of a woman, Ms. Foster Jenkins herself (played by Meryl Streep) who heard nothing but sweet angels in her head, yet couldn’t actually sing for a toffee. Her manager and husband St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant) hides the truth during the private recitals, but when Florence agrees to sing live at Carnegie Hall, things begin to get a little tricky…
Costume designer for Florence Foster Jenkins is Consolata Boyle, a BAFTA award winner probably best known for her work on The Queen (2006), The Iron Lady (2011), and more recently Philomena (2013) – and yes there is definitely a ‘real life’ theme here. For this project, however, everything had to be even larger than real life. This is mid-forties New York (even if the film was actually shot in Liverpool) with Foster Jenkins a full-on society dame enabling an eccentricity ingrained since childhood.
