When You Visit Bob Ritchie at his home in the jagged hills outside Nashville, the guy who will likely greet you at the door is a tall, well-dressed, exceedingly polite gentleman who goes by “Uncle Tom.” Because of course he does. Ritchie makes his living as Kid Rock, but a big part of being Kid Rock these days involves doing things that are simultaneously provocative, offensive, and, at least to him, funny. It tracks, then, that a middle-aged white guy who began his career more than three decades ago in...

Chain, the concept dining experience founded by actor-writer B.J. Novak and Michelin-starred chef Tim Hollingsworth, hosted an intimate pop-up at their Hollywood Chain House.
On both Wednesday and Thursday night, May 8 and 9, the nostalgia-inducing space transformed into “The Pollo Lounge,” a riff on the iconic Polo Lounge, becoming a cozy and classy jazz speakeasy where invited guests were served their take on Kentucky Friend Chicken classics. Chain specializes in transforming chain restaurant classics, like a KFC chicken bucket, into a more elevated version of itself.
For the Pollo Lounge pop-up, guests were served generous portions of chicken tenders, french fries, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and biscuits at tables centered around a small stage. In addition to the food, guests were able to choose from a menu of cocktails made with the new prebiotic soda Levo, which sponsored the evening. The soda was also available on its own for...

Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?
Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.
After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.
However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

At a comedy show as part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest on Friday, Jon Stewart went deep on Joe Biden, antisemitism and the idea of “go woke and go broke.”
Stewart headlined at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for his “Jon Stewart and Friends” show, which saw him bring out Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman and Mike Birbiglia as his special guests.
Starting things off with the upcoming presidential election, Stewart questioned, “Why are we allowing this? And now we’re going to have a president that’s [one of] the two oldest people that have ever run for the office of the presidency,” with Biden and Donald Trump breaking the record that they themselves set four years ago.
“I know liberals say, ‘Don’t say Joe Biden is old’ — don’t say what people see with their own eyes! You can say it, he can’t hear us,” he joked.

Dylan Mulvaney is dreaming big, and one of the characters she would like to play is Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.
In a recent interview, the singer and actress said that her dream theater role was to play Glinda in Wicked, but her “dream dream” was to portray the Harvard Law School student that Reese Witherspoon famously played in the 2001 film.
“My dream though is to do a trans Legally Blonde,” Mulvaney said in an interview with IMDb during SXSW. “I wanna play Elle Woods and have maybe a trans Emmett and a trans Paulette. And I think what’s so cool about plugging trans people into existing stories is it inherently changes what the topic is, but in a way that you don’t actually have to do much to the script because it becomes something different — but actually, I think it makes it even more powerful.”

Milwaukee bar owner Ricky Ramirez usually begins posts on The Mothership’s Instagram account with a lighthearted insult towards his patrons. “Sup bozos,” “sup idiots,” “sup dorkus malorkus,” and “hello freaks,” are all frequent openers to photo captions announcing service updates, schedule disruptions, and special events. Combining craft cocktails, a dive bar feel, and a marquee sign with rotating quips such as “Today Only Drugs In Bathroom Ok” and “We Will Refuse Service If You Didn’T Wash Your Ass,” the Mothership sounds like a good time.

After Lady Gaga received transphobic comments following her photo shoot with trans TikToker Dylan Mulvaney, the pop star shared a statement on Instagram decrying the negative remarks.
“It’s appalling to me that a post about National [sic] Women’s Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred,” wrote Gaga. “When I see a newspaper reporting on hatred but calling it ‘backlash’ I feel it is important to clarify that hatred is hatred, and this kind of hatred is violence. ‘Backlash’ would imply that people who love or respect Dylan and me didn’t like something we did. This is not backlash. This is hatred.”
She continued, “But it is not surprising given the immense work that it’s obvious we still have to do as a society to make room for transgender lives to be cherished and upheld by all of us.”

Ever since right-wing influencers orchestrated a boycott of Anheuser-Busch products last year for collaborating with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, they have been foaming at the mouth for a new product to boycott for incredibly stupid, hateful reasons. First, it was Frosted Flakes, due to its mascot posing for a photo with Mulvaney at the Tony Awards (a cultural event beloved by the right due to the absence of LGBTQ people in musical theater). Then, it was Cracker Barrel, because during Pride Month, the restaurant chain had the temerity to acknowledge...

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the Belgian multinational drink and brewing company, suffered a potential loss of $1.4 billion in revenue due to the social media-driven boycott against Bud Light in 2023.
Even though Anheuser-Busch InBev had reported record revenues for 2023, they claimed that its growth potential was hindered by its U.S. business.
Sales in that area were negatively affected by a boycott of Bud Light following a sponsored Instagram post with Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer.
A large share of Bud Light’s consumer base stopped buying their beer in early April 2023, when Mulvaney shared the sponsored post of a custom Bud Light can Anheuser-Busch sent her to celebrate “365 Days of Girlhood,” which she opened in honor of March Madness.

Incomprehensible Maga-land predictions that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce would rig the Super Bowl and endorse Joe Biden for president to 100 million American viewers as part of a massive psy-op turned out to have been greatly exaggerated. Mostly, they just kissed a lot.
But that’s not to say our nation’s fractious politics didn’t break through during the broadcast. While most of the ads involved the usual self-effacing celebrities asserting their cultural relevance — and some of them were crowd-pleasers and even funny — a number of them touched on some of the most divisive issues of the day: religion, the presidential race and Bud Light.
Going in, all eyes were on the last, the object of a polarizing 2023 boycott from conservative groups for having collaborated with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney on an Instagram campaign to promote March Madness. Sales slumped. Kid Rock strafed at Bud Light cases with his...

Advertisers who normally use the Super Bowl to create commercials that make your jaw drop instead were content if they could get just a little smile.
For the second consecutive year, Madison Avenue relied on a massive parade of celebrities to capture consumer attention, foregoing in many cases the social messages and dynamic creative concepts that have generated chatter in the past. Where the Super Bowl was once the setting for Apple’s still-talked-about “1984” commercial or Procter & Gamble’s clever insertion of Tide into a bevy of ads, it’s now become a place for formulaic cameos of famous faces.
“It’s like a celebrity arms race,” says Simon Bruyn, executive creative director at Mother, an independent agency. “It’s like one celebrity isn’t enough.”

Bud Light is ready for a brand reboot, and it is betting on the Super Bowl to help deliver it.
2023 was a tough year for the brand, which saw its sales decline double digits following an influencer-marketing campaign that included transgender TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney.
It was also a year in which the Ab Inbev brand used the big game to take a more sophisticated approach to marketing in a campaign starring Miles and Keleigh Teller.
Now, the beer brand is reversing course and leaning in to some of the traits that made its previous Super Bowl ads classics of the genre: Humor, wacky characters, and some big sports and music stars.
There will be a new character for the “Bud Light Universe”: The Bud Light Genie, (he joins an illustrious history of characters that include The Bud Knight, the “I love you man” guy, and the guy who...

Bud Light is dipping into an old bag of tricks to help it solve a very new challenge.
The popular Anheuser-Busch brew, hoping to rally consumers to its cause after a difficult period, will unveil the latest in a parade of funny characters in Super Bowl Lviii. A new ad slated to run in the third quarter of the game introduces the Bud Light Genie, an affable creature who grants a group of friends many wishes during an epic night out. By the time the commercial ends, the pals meet up with Peyton Manning, Post Malone and UFC CEO Dana White.
“There really is a universal truth behind it,” says Todd Allen, vice president of marketing for Bud Light. “A weeknight out with your friends should be easy.”
The commercial marks a return by Bud Light to the humorous advertising that has made it one of the most durable sponsors of the Big Game.

Dozens of advertisers will flock to Super Bowl Lviii this Sunday, ready to pay out a small fortune to CBS in a bid to grab some attention. But they won’t crave as much of that valuable recognition as they might have just a few years ago.
The Super Bowl has long offered Madison Avenue an arena where risk taking is welcome. In 2015, for example, Nationwide ran a commercial during Super Bowl Xlix that told a story from the viewpoint of a child who was already dead, while the portable-power company Mophie offered a spot showing God letting the Earth tilt into apocalypse because his smartphone battery was dead. Neither ad won hearts and minds that night, but the marketers felt they had permission to try and spark conversation.
In 2024, chatter is exactly what Madison Avenue fears most.

Malia Obama stepped onto a red carpet last week for the first time, with good reason. The former first daughter hit Park City for the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her short film The Heart, an 18-minute directorial debut that snagged a spot in the U.S. short fiction films program of the 2024 edition. The premiere screening happened on the fest’s opening day, Jan. 18, and screened two more times over the weekend. The budding filmmaker, who participated in all post-screening Q&As to discuss her work, also took time out of her busy schedule to screen the film and speak with a group of students at Park City High School about all things creative from writing to directing.
Malia Obama attended The Heart premiere and posed with her actors and short-film collaborators.
It wasn’t all work and no play for the 25-year-old daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama.

“Get woke, go broke,” a favorite rallying cry of conservative culture warriors, echoed far and wide in 2023 as one company after another was targeted for a boycott over supposed leftist tendencies. Raging right-wingers bashed cans of Bud Light, trashed displays at Target stores, and backed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a feud with Disney.
What did all this sound and fury amount to? Little more than a collective temper tantrum. The corporate behemoths who faced these outrage campaigns were never going anywhere, and after short periods of turbulence, essentially all of them stabilized.

It seems like only yesterday that Kid Rock was firing an assault rifle at cases of Bud Light in protest of their brand partnership with trans entertainer Dylan Mulvaney. But time flies, and it’s already been eight months since that week in April when Rock helped kick off a right-wing boycott of the beverage — one that caused a drop in brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev’s stock price and enshrined the culture war slogan “get woke, go broke.”

X’s Unique Un-Sales Strategy: CEO Linda Yaccarino Woos Advertisers; Owner Elon Musk Drives Them Away
If movie and TV studios get nervous about advertising, so should everyone else.
Advertisers loathe controversy, and often “pull” or “yank” their commercials from individual pieces of content that generate it. But the studios have stiffer spines. They don’t run garden-variety commercials, but rather trailers and sneak previews of much-anticipated TV programs, and their target consumer is typically young men, who often don’t feel the outrage of advocacy groups eager to spur boycotts of a cable-news channel, a scripted series with a controversial star; or a reality program that offends. Studios don’t often feel the need to stop running their ads, particularly when an opening weekend’s box office tally might be at stake. In 2018, when many advertisers suspended their support of comedian Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal” on TBS following a joke she made about Ivanka Trump, then the daughter of the then-u.S.
