“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” has picked up another award on its march to the Oscars, nabbing the feature prize at the 50th Annie Awards, presented by Asifa-Hollywood, on Saturday evening.
In addition to being named the top film by the animation industry, “Pinocchio” led the winners’ list with five trophies overall, including the award for best direction for del Toro and fellow director Mark Gustafson. The stop-motion movie also picked up wins for music, production design (Curt Enderle and Guy Davis) and character design (Tucker Barrie).
Del Toro, who came directly from the PGA Awards where he received the trophy for producing ‘Pinocchio,’ was thrilled to win the Annie for direction alongside Gustafson. “Can I say this? I wanted the fucking Annie so much. It’s the most gorgeous thing in the world!” He noted that the Annies ceremony was the one place that he didn’t have to point...

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was the big winner at the 50th annual Annie Awards, winning five categories in the award show that honors the best in animation. Fellow Oscar-nominees “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” won three and two awards, respectively.
“Pinocchio” led all films with nine nominations and went into the ceremony as a strong favorite to win the top award. The dark stop-motion take on the “Pinocchio” story also came into the ceremony at a time when its distributor, Netflix, has been dominating the Annies. Last year, its film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was nominated in eight categories and won all eight, including Best Feature, while the eventual Oscar winner “Encanto” settled for three awards in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated. And two years before that, Netflix’s “Klaus” was a surprise winner over Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,...

When the video game “Cuphead” was released in 2017, it became something of an instant classic in the animation community. Studio Mdhr’s shoot ‘em up indie platformer, in which players take control of the title character as he goes on a quest to defeat the devil, is a loving tribute to the Golden Age of animation, with graphics that mimic the rubber hose style of the earliest Mickey Mouse and Fleischer Studios shorts. Even Dave Wasson, who doesn’t normally play video games, kept his eye on the game when it was first announced in 2013. And when he sat down to play it, he was completely blown away.
“They just nailed it in a way that I don’t think anybody else really ever has in any medium since the original 1930s,” Wasson says.

Netflix gave “Cuphead” fans a behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming adaptation of the popular 2017 video game on Friday.
In a roughly 45-second clip posted to Twitter, Netflix showcased art and animation from the series — titled “The Cuphead Show” — and lead actor Tru Valentino, who voices the titular animated teacup.
The “run and gun” style action video game “Cuphead” was developed by Canada-based Studio Mhdr in 2017 for PC and console. Inspired by 1930s cartoons, the hero Cuphead and his brother Mugman are drawn in the style of Fleischer Studios, the animators known for creating Betty Boop, Popeye and first animating Superman.

The indie game has become a surprise megahit for the indie studio, selling over 4 million copies since its launch in September 2017. Cuphead returns to its animated adventure roots thanks to a new deal with Netflix.
Cuphead is coming to Netflix as part of a deal between Netflix, King Features, and Cuphead developer Studio Mdhr.
Simply titled The Cuphead Show, this new series will focus on the game's main characters and utilize other aspects of the popular 2017 2D action title that it's based on. It will also feature that game's incredible animation style, but the Cuphead creators say that they won't be handling the actual animation duties.
“We are not going to be animating this [ourselves] because it would never be finished,” says Cuphead co-creator Chad Moldenhauer in an interview with IGN. "The current goal is to stay as far away from [computer-assisted] puppeteer animation as possible...It’s going to be hand-drawn but digitally. ‘Tradigital’."
Plot-wise, the current team involved with the project (which includes the game's creators as executive...

Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era: traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.
