This is the latest installment of “Breaking Black,” a weekly column focused on emerging black talent.
Wunmi Mosaku doesn’t give up without a fight. After auditioning for a role on season 1 of “Luther,” she didn’t make the cut. “I remember reading the script and absolutely loving it, and really wanting the role, but I didn’t get it,” Mosaku said. “And when I watched the season, really wanted to be a part of it.”
Now, nine years later, she’s starring opposite Idris Elba on season 5 of the BBC’s hit detective series as new recruit Detective Sgt. Catherine Halliday.
“For any actor, no matter how old or young you are, it can be tough when you’re without work for months or even years, so it’s been a lovely 18 months or so for me,” Mosaku said.
Mosaku, 32, is a BAFTA TV-winning actress largely unfamiliar to American audiences.

It seems Storm and Jean Grey will be seeing some close-quarters combat in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse, as celebrity fight trainer Holly Lawson is currently getting Alexandra Shipp (House of Anubis) and Sophie Turner (Game Of Thrones) ready for the upcoming shoot. Obviously this isn't any indication of the looks they'll sport for the movie, but the rumor is we might just see them in something resembling their classic comic book outfits anyway. We have no way of verifying that of course, but if Singer does kit the team out in some sort of costumes I think it's a safe bet we won't be seeing the black leather again at any rate. And the award for best bump-to-abs transformation goes to... Rosamund Pike looked the most beautiful we've ever seen her at the 2015 Oscars for many reasons: Her crimson-lace Givenchy dress, which wowed on the red carpet, as well as her unfussy updo and perfectly feminine beauty look—all undeniable factors in her head-turning appearance. But the mom-of-two, who gave birth to second son Atom with husband Robie Uniacke in December, was looking, well, ripped. Rosamund's post-baby body transformation (which happened in just five weeks) is largely due to her relationship with celeb personal trainer and professional boxer Holly Lawson, who was also helped Pike with her character's required weight...
