It’s been eight years since Andrew Stanton last visited space with John Carter. More notable for its financial legacy than its cultural impact, it was one of the most expensive movies ever made—and also led Disney to lose $200 million from it. After refocusing his efforts on more Pixar work as well as a handful of TV series, THR reports Stanton is currently in talks to return to live-action filmmaking (and the cosmos) with Chairman Spaceman.
Based on Thomas Pierce’s fictional New Yorker story of the same name, it follows a notorious business raider as he jettisons his earthly possessions. His new goal is to become a missionary, leading to a droll tale that touches on faith, ego, and the blurry, detached line between gods and people. Given that the source material is closer to Douglas Adams than Pete Docter, it also points to something different for the writer/director.

Andrew Stanton has had a ton of success as a filmmaker. Well, success with animated films, at least. He won two Oscars for films such as “Finding Nemo” and “Wall-e,” but his attempt at live-action filmmaking, the 2012 feature “John Carter,” has gone down in history as one of the more notorious box office flops. But that hasn’t dissuaded Stanton from trying his hand at live-action filmmaking one more time, with the upcoming “Chairman Spaceman.”

Netflix has won the rights to the science-fiction story “Pyros,” with Reese Witherspoon attached to produce and star.
“Dark Phoenix” director Simon Kimberg will also produce “Pyros” through his Genre Films company along with Audrey Chon. Witherspoon is producing through her Hello Sunshine company with Lauren Neustadter.
“Pyros” will be adapted by Thomas Pierce from his short story “Tardy Man,” first published last year in the New Yorker and centered on people who are fitted with indestructible fire suits fused to their spines. They are employed by a corporation that recovers objects for wealthy people when their houses are burning — but are only allowed to help people who have policies with the corporation.
CAA handled the auction for “Pyros,” which drew six other bids. The deal was announced Tuesday, a day after Apple released a first look at its upcoming drama, “The Morning Show,” starring Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell and Witherspoon.
