The rituals associated with traditional mixed sex marriage seem increasingly quaint in today’s society. What was once extremely serious is increasingly treated with affectionate humour, turned into a sort of game in order to make it compatible with the different expectations women have of life. For many LGBTQ+ people, of course, it has always felt strange and othering, a reinforcement of heterocentric assumptions. It’s never more complicated than when people are keeping secrets.
From the moment that Scarlet (Amber Anderson) arrives at the large country house where Jo (Greta Bellamacina) is staying, it’s obvious that her feelings for her run deep. They haven’t seen each other for years, not since the days when they used to attend the same dance classes. Scarlet is a dance teacher now. Jo is preparing to get married – to older, wealthy artist John, whom we never meet. A delicate, elfin thing in lavender and pink,...

Flashbacks reveal an all-consuming bond when two friends reunite at a hen night in a country cottage
Filled with luscious shades of pastel pinks, blues and greens, the warm colour palette of Jaclyn Bethany’s latest feature blushes with the heady glow of summer. Like a bruised fruit, however, the sugary imagery belies unexpected notes of bitterness, as the film plumbs the complex depths of female relationship and the everlasting spell of first love. Led by an all-female cast, the mood is beguilingly woozy, even conspiratorial.
Friends in their teens as dance students, Scarlet (Amber Anderson) and Jo (Greta Bellamacina) reunite as adults for the latter’s hen night at a countryside cottage. Other guests will soon arrive, but much of the film hinges on the palpable tension and intimacy between the two women. Nearly opposite in temperament – Scarlet is reserved while Jo is more flamboyant – the pair finds their...

Honor Swinton Byrne (“The Souvenir”) and Greta Bellamacina (“Tell That To The Winter”) are set to star in Jaclyn Bethany’s upcoming feature film “All Five Eyes.”
Co-written by Bethany and Bellamacina, the film tells the story of Marion (Swinton Byrne) and Cecily (Bellamacina) as they care for their disabled younger sister Willa. It is set to shoot in the U.K. in August.
Set in a small English village in 1967, liberated Marion is exploring the new social freedoms enjoyed by women in the late 1960s while conscientious and self-conscious Cecily runs the local girls school and is Willa’s main carer.
“Their differences reach a boiling point over their relationship with Willa, which leads to each sister making their own decision on what it means to have a life worth living,” reads the logline.
The screenplay was informed by Bellamacina’s own experience of caring for a child with autism.

It was quite the week for British politics, with the scandal leading to former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation briefly making America look tame by comparison.
After it was revealed that the controversial politician had promoted a member of Parliament to a senior whipping position despite knowledge of sexual misconduct allegations against the man, Johnson faced a series of high profile defections and resignations within his party. Though he resisted calls to resign for as long as he could — as he had done in the past — the resignations ultimately snowballed until he could no longer remain in power.
In the entertainment world, his resignation immediately prompted speculation that “This England,” an upcoming Sky miniseries starring Kenneth Branagh as Johnson, would be forced to shoot additional scenes. The show generated some buzz when it released the first footage of Johnson as Branagh, and many thought that the creative team would...

"I need you to focus on your life... Think about the things that you want to know..." Trinity Creative has just revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed British indie film titled Hurt by Paradise, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2019, also stopping by the Raindance Film Festival. Hurt by Paradise is a film about a poet and a girl with big hair. Together they find friendship as the possibility of their dreams dwindles. The cast includes Nicholas Rowe, Anna Brewster, Sai Bennett, Jaime Winstone, and Tanya Burr. This looks a bit kooky but still charming and extra clever and, of course, brutally honest about the way things are. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Greta Bellamacina's Hurt by Paradise,...

Hurt by Paradise marks the debut feature from behind the lens from actress Greta Bellamacina, collaborating with her partner Robert Montgomery, to tell this London-set tale of friendship (and the challenges in making it as a professional poet).
Naturally, when we had the pleasure of speaking to the duo on Zoom, we learnt that these very experiences shadow real life, as they talk about their own ups and downs as poets, while they comment on the themes of the movie and where this idea initially spawned from. They also talk about London as a setting, as well as their time spent shooting in Margate – while they also discuss with us their future aspirations as a creative duo, hoping to continue to make films of this very nature (with Greta talking about her upcoming project with prolific Welsh director – and friend of the site – Jamie Adams).

Director Greta Bellamacina plays a single mother struggling for recognition as a poet in this charming, gawky and overplayed tale
At last year’s Cannes film festival the poet/model/actor/filmmaker Greta Bellamacina revealed she’d been turned away from the festival site by staff because she had her three-month son with her in a buggy – the irony being that her film is the story of a young single mother struggling to be taken seriously as a poet. Hurt by Paradise turns out to be a drifty, pretentious, London-set drama, though pretty enough, with the smudged eyeliner glamour of an edgy fashion shoot.
Bellamacina’s film is self-consciously highbrow: that much is clear in the opening scene in which Celeste (Bellamacina) gets the brush off from a cartoonishly cynical literary agent who tells her that the reading public is only interested in dead poets: “Look at Sylvia Plath!” He...

Greta Bellamacina will star in “Thomasina,” an upcoming horror movie from Jaclyn Bethany. Rileigh McDonald (“The Sinner”) has also signed on for the movie, which is set in the underbelly of L.A.
Director and actress Bellamacina has been in the news at Cannes after being refused entry to the Marche with her baby son, then being told she needed to pay an accreditation fee for the infant, a procedure that would take 48 hours to process. The organizers said there was a mix-up on the ground and that it had fixed the situation, but it was an embarrassing incident at a moment when gender equality is firmly in the spotlight.
The “Thomasina” announcement and casting is more regular Cannes news. McDonald, who has been starring in “Matilda” on Broadway, plays the titular character in the picture, a mysterious, down-on-her-luck teenager whose life begins to spin out of control after her mother’s murder.

Jaclyn Bethany's The Last Birthday is an experimental short that re-imagines the final days of the Romanov sisters as they’re held in captivity by Bolshevik guards in Siberia. The impressive cast includes Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia), Jazzy De Lisser (Thumper), Branko Tomovic (24), Harry Lister Smith (Murder on the Orient Express), Greta Bellamacina, Gus Barry and Fern Bain Smith.
