Andrey Rublev put together a really solid week at the 2024 Hong Kong Open, ending up in the final, which he won against Emil Ruusuvuori.
Rublev has a habit of collecting these smaller events as he's simply too good for the fields that generally play them. He missed out on the Grand Slams, which is the next step, but for now, he'll be glad to start 2024 on a pretty high note.
Opting against playing early in Australia, Rublev traveled to Hong Kong, where we had a pretty decent field but not as good as those Down Under. That allowed Rublev to cruise through his matches and end up in the final against Ruusuvori.
The heavy favorite on paper, Rublev did well to win the match in two sets and lift another trophy. The final score was a simple 6-4 6-4 as the Finnish player struggled to muster the consistency needed to beat Rublev.

Andrey Rublev has put together a really solid week at the 2024 Hong Kong Open, making it to the final, and he'll take on Emil Ruusuvuori for the trophy.
Rublev made a habit out of colleting these trophies, and he gets 2024 started the right way. The first event in the new year and the first chance to get another trophy. This week was primarily to prepare for the Australian Open, but any time you can get a trophy is a good weak.
It wasn't a week where Rublev demonstrated tennis without flaws. He was pushed a few times and will get pushed more in the final. Ruusuvori is a tricky player capable of hitting the ball really hard, and sometimes that's all you really need.
Head-to-head:
Rublev and Ruusuvori have played before, and while the Russian leads 2-1, the H2H proves that it's an interesting matchup. The most recent of...

Andrey Rublev is known as a fierce competitor, but he's never been one to forget sportsmanship in the heat of the battle.
Rublev is known as a very emotional player who creates some smashing tennis when he's on the court. Occasionally, he'll create some unforgettable scenes, but not in a good way.
At the Atp Finals not long ago, Rublev bloodied his knee by hitting himself with the racquet in anger, and that was not the first time he did it.
Despite all that competitiveness and emotion, the Russian never forgets sportsmanship, and he demonstrated it recently against Arthur Fils at the 2024 Hong Kong Open.
The match was a close one, with both players winning one set, but Rublev ultimately found a better level in the final set to win the match. During the match in the first set, a serve by Fils was called out, with the umpire not...

Bleeding on the tennis court is not something you see often, but Adrian Mannarino made it so in a recent meltdown at the 2024 United Cup.
Tennis is a non-contact sport which generally ensures that fans rarely see any blood. From time to time, players might slip and scrape their knees or do something similar, but most of them know how to fall.
Bleeding does happen, though, as we've seen it recently at the Atp Finals. A very frustrated Andrey Rublev cracked open his knee after hitting himself repeatedly with the racket.
We've gotten used to it from Rublev, but now another player did something similar. Mikhail Youzhny patented this outburst years ago when he hit himself in the head with the racquet, and Adrian Mannarino has done the same now.
He's not known as a player who has many demonstrative outbursts, but in recent years, we've seen him show more...

Tennis players are known to experience a range of emotions on a match court, and in order to play better, they need to release this built-up tension and emotion.
Some of the players, like World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, find fuel just by breaking their racket. Others like Andrey Rublev take it to the extreme levels of self-destructing by harming a body part. For Wta star Jessica Pegula, venting appears to be her way of coping with frustrations.
During a recent singles match at the United Cup, Pegula was extremely frustrated with her return game while playing Great Britain's Katie Boulter. The World No. 5 had never played Boulter before, but that didn't matter as she romped to take the first set 7-5.
Pegula then took a commanding 3-0 lead in the second set and looked to be cruising. But Boulter showed why she was the top-ranked British woman and turned the match on its head,...

Novak Djokovic has extended his dominance at the top of the Atp rankings by posting his 406th week as World No. 1.
As the Atp season begins on a clean slate in 2024, Djokovic remains the only player with five-digit ranking points. The Serb has built an enormous lead over second-placed Carlos Alcaraz, which stretched to 2,390 points.
Alcaraz is not in action until the Australian Open, while Djokovic is playing in the United Cup, where he was instrumental in powering Serbia to an opening group-stage win over China in Perth.
Djokovic has an opportunity to win a maximum of 500 ranking points at the mixed-gender team competition but is set to drop 250 ranking points from winning the Adelaide International last year.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion is not assured of the World No. 1 beyond the Australian Open. That is because Alcaraz doesn't defend any points in January and has room to gain over...

Running from January 1st to 7th, the Hong Kong Open returns to the Atp Tour after a 21-year absence, and the draw for the 2024 edition has been released.
With three Top 20 players in the field, one of whom is a top tenner, this Atp 250 event is not bereft of star power. World No.5 Andrey Rublev is the biggest name at Victoria Park as he looks to refine his game ahead of the year's first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
The Russian tends to play at a very decent level in the season's opening week and has a very nice draw on his Hong Kong debut. Rublev has a bye in the opening round as the top seed and doesn't know his second-round opponent yet.
He'll await the winner of the match between Pedro Cachin and a qualifier. Rublev could have his hands full by the quarterfinal stage should he get there.

Some of the players can't play under their flags at the 2024 Australian Open, and there's a very specific reason for that.
Some players were assigned a white flag next to their name, or no flag, and that was not by mistake. It is meant to serve as a neutral banner for Russian and Belarusian tennis players competing at the event.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in which Belarus is a key staging area, has seen sporting sanctions brought against its athletes. For instance, at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Russian and Belarusian players were banned from playing the tournament in a controversial move.
Tennis Australia (Ta) has not issued any restrictions - or at least on par with the All England Club - for Russian and Belarusian athletes for the forthcoming tournament set to commence on January 14, 2024.

Andrey Rublev is a player who traditionally plays a lot of tournaments every year, but this year might be a bit different, according to his coach.
For a few years now, Andrey Rublev has been part of the tennis elite. Every year proved to be a minor step forward as he works hard every week and plays a lot. For years now, Rublev has been one of the top players with most events played, and that's just his nature.
He loves to play the sport and often pushes more than he should have. Earlier this year, Rublev won Monte-Carlo and immediately went to Banja Luka to play the event there even though his coach urged him not to play. He spoke about that in a recent interview with Tennis Majors.
Of course if you compare with Novak and these guys. Maybe this year, in 2024, we should (skip) some tournaments. But...

Mirra Andreeva got a chance to play at the 2023 World Tennis League alongside some seasoned pros, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, and it's been a wonderful experience for her.
The 16-year-old amazed many with her tremendous tennis last year, making her way into the Top 100 after some pretty solid finishes. The Russian is destined for greatness, and she showed it once more during the World Tennis League.
Despite being the youngest of all players there and taking on seasoned pros who won Grand Slams, Andreeva showed that she could hang with them during a match with some amazing performance.
Sofia Kenin and Andreeva teamed up for the sensational comeback win over Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa, which basically won them the final tie.

Andrey Rublev has recently shared his sentiments on why Carlos Alcaraz has a completely different on-court persona amid concerns about his temper.
Tennis is a high-pressure sport that calls for intense focus and mental clarity in every point. And because it is played in a fast-paced environment, it is only natural that frustration can lead to emotional overreactions and occasional outbursts like breaking rackets.
Rublev had struggled with emotion management on multiple occasions last season and came under intense criticism when he took his on-court outbursts to the extreme end, most notably in Vienna and at the Atp Finals in Turn.
In both tournaments, Rublev cracked his knee open by smashing his racket repeatedly after losing control of his emotions. As such, the Russian has been known as a combustible figure in men's tennis because of his self-destructive behavior.
By contrast, Carlos Alcaraz, six years younger than Rublev, is arguably the coolest head on tour.

Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov played the final match of the 2023 World Tennis League, and the Russian confirmed the Eagles' win over the Kites.
Before this match, the Eagles had a pretty big lead over the Kites making it pretty impossible for Rublev to mess it up. They were up 25-19 so the Russian needed any kind of win to basically wrap up the tie for his team.
It was an interesting final that sort of changed dramatically when Sabalenka and Badosa lost a 5-2 lead in their doubles match to lose the match 5-7. That completely turned around the tie overall and from there the Eagles cruised.
Regarding this match, Rublev came out on fire taking the first two games behind pretty great shot-making. He did lose his serve in the 3rd game of the match, which was good for the match. Dimitrov was quite keen on exploiting the...

The final doubles match of the World Tennis League final saw good friends Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev pair up against Grigor Dimitrov and Lloyd Harris.
After Sabalenka and Badosa messed up their doubles match, Dimitrov and Harris found themselves in a pretty tricky spot. Their team was behind by one after the first two matches so they really needed to pull out this one.
The unique format, which counts every game as a point, makes it crucial to keep the scores close. Had they lost this match easily, their team would be in an impossible situation with the final two singles matches coming up.
That's why we saw some pretty good play by Dimitrov and Harris. Both of them are really good servers and they had their serve working really well. In the rallies, Medvedev and Rublev seemed to have a minor edge but couldn't create too much pressure due to the serves.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal won't retire any time soon, according to Andrey Rublev, who believes they will keep pushing in their Grand Slam race.
This is hardly a shocking opinion because these players have confirmed that it's their intention. The case of Nadal is far more complicated as we don't know what will happen once he finally returns.
He did say that he would likely continue playing beyond his initial 2024 prognosis if things went well. Novak Djokovic is still one of the best players in the world, so for him, it's rather obvious that he'll keep playing.
There is only one reason, and that's legacy, as they both hope to finish with as many Grand Slams as possible.

Iga Swiatek is excited about her potential Olympics mixed doubles pairing with compatriot Hubert Hurkacz next season.

Ultimately, Swiatek and Hubi's win in Abu Dhabi over their Russian competitors was a good sign for next summer at the Olympics. Andrey Rublev recently cracked a joke that left his compatriot and good friend Daniil Medvedev uneasy on the bench and smiling rather awkwardly.

Rafael Nadal returns to tennis in less than ten days, and fellow Atp colleague Andrey Rublev could see him challenge for Grand Slams again.
While it might have seemed impossible a few months ago, it's finally happening. Rafael Nadal is returning to tennis, and many people are curious about how it will go. Some expect him to completely bomb, while others expect him to be competitive.
According to those who actually stood with him on a tennis court recently, Nadal is playing well enough to be competitive, but we'll see what happens. The comeback isn't happening for him only to be part of the Tour.
He's coming back with the intention of winning events, especially Grand Slams, and Andrey Rublev certainly thinks it could happen. He talked about Nadal with The National News.

Andrey Rublev has a pretty interesting friendship that began three years ago in Turin as he talked about during a podcast recently.
Rublev is known as a pretty goofy person yet a serious tennis player. His off-court personality is quite outgoing and fun to be around, while his on-court demeanor can be quite intimidating and very serious.
It's a pretty interesting contrast, but you'd struggle to find a player more approachable than Rublev. One particular story from his life demonstrates that pretty well, and it shows he became friends with his bodyguard in Turin.
It happened three years ago in Turin when he played in the city for the first time. It was the Atp Finals, and he was provided security to accompany him on his journey through the city.
In a recent interview on a Russian YouTube Channel, Rublev talked about many things, including how he became friends with his bodyguard in Turin.

Daniil Medvedev proved to be The Eagles' hero during the second tie at the 2023 World Tennis League, after he secured their win against Hubert Hurkacz.
First, the Russian teamed up with his good friend Andrey Rublev to win in doubles, and after that, he played also a singles match, taking on The Hawks' Hubert Hurkacz.
Thanks to the event's special format, every game won counts, and ahead of this match, there was a chance that the match will be sent into an overtime, which means that a super tie-break decides the tie.
The Russian was broken already in the first game of the match, and things were not looking good, especially since his opponent is one of the best servers on the Atp Tour.
However, Medvedev managed to break back immediately, and since then, both players showed their exceptional serving qualities. But that was only until the 12th game.

The third match between the Eagles and the Hawks was an interesting one that didn't quite go well for the Hawks as good friends Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev bested Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz.
Hurkacz is proving to be quite a problem for the Eagles at the 2023 World Tennis League, as the Polish player is playing really strong tennis on top of winning with Iga Swiatek earlier today.
This was a hugely important match for both teams as the Hawks led 10-8 before this match, and winning this one would have ensured them the win.
It all comes down to math because Hurkacz will play one of the singles matches later, and with his serve, it's unlikely he'll give up too many games on his serve, which could have ensured the win.
It's due to the unique format, which basically counts each game in every match as a point.

After losing yesterday, the Hawks came out on fire in this one, taking a 6-2 lead after the first match in which Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz brought the hammer.
Having done it a few times, Swiatek and Hurkacz are no strangers to playing doubles together. They played at the United Cup last year with great success and will return next year at the Olympics to represent Poland in Paris.
If this match is anything to go by, then they'll be really great as they won 6-2 easily. The impressive scoreline is also vital for the tie overall due to the format. The event features a unique format with four players in each team and each tie consisting of 5 matches: two singles and three doubles.
Each game won in each match counts as one point, and after all five matches, you count all the points and see which team has the most.

Grigor Dimitrov recorded his first singles match at the 2023 World Tennis League, when he bested Taylor Fritz.
When the two Atp players met in the men's singles match in the tie between The Falcons and The Kites, the American stepped on the court with a minor advantage, as his team won all the previous three matches.
At the tournament, where there are five matches played in a team format, each games won counts for one point, and therefore every game played counts towards the end result.
In their first singles matches at the tournament, both lost, since Dimitrov was outplayed by Andrey Rublev, while Casper Ruud proved to be better than Fritz on Day 1 of the tournament.
That meant that one of them would win their first match, and initially they both held their service games comfortably, but Dimitrov got the first break in the fourth break to establish the lead in the match.

Sofia Kenin's aspirations for the upcoming season are much different compared to 12 months ago, and she will make an unfamiliar stop in her off-season training.
Kenin, 25, is in Abu Dhabi, where she is set to partake in the second edition of the World Tennis League, a mixed-gender exhibition event not affiliated with the Atp or Wta tour, which has attracted several of the world's top tennis players.

After three doubles matches, the Kites and Eagles sent out Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov for the first singles match.
After three doubles matches, the Kites were up by four points, which meant that Rublev had a lot of work to do against a very tricky player in Dimitrov. The Bulgarian had a really strong year in 2023, arguably his best in years, and the hope is to bring the same level to this upcoming season.
This wasn't a bad start from Dimitrov, who looked really comfortable at the start of the match. The pressure was far bigger for Rublev, who needed to win this match, while Dimitrov could even lose it, just not by much to keep his team in the lead.

The World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi continued with the third match of the second tie of the day as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov took on Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.

Every game matters because of the unique format, which will be explained in the following sentences. Players are paired up in teams of four, with each tie between teams consisting of 5 matches. The duration of a match is one set, with three doubles and two singles matches being played.
Each game won in each match counts as one point, which matters most. At the end of each tie, the winning team is the one that has the most points, meaning the most games won.

Andrey Rublev explained that his clothing brand lacked the necessary budget for other players to get involved and start wearing the apparel.
Rublev launched his own clothing company, Rublo, earlier in December, and the Russian player revealed that all the profits from the enterprise will go towards charities that help underprivileged children.
The 26-year-old Atp player has previously worn sportswear from the company and also broke his partnership with Nike earlier in 2023, instead choosing to wear his own clothes on the court.
Currently, Rublev is the only professional tennis player involved in his charity-supporting project. When asked in an interview with Tennis 365 about the prospect of other Atp players becoming involved and wearing Rublo clothes, the 26-year-old explained that his brand was not quite at that level financially.
“I don’t have enough money to pay players to wear this clothing, so I don’t think we can make that happen at the moment.

Nick Kyrgios is trying to back his point in the recent days, after he said that former legends would struggle today on the Atp Tour.
Only around a week ago, the Australian said that former legends wouldn't thrive in current days, saying the likes of Novak Djokovic would dominate against Pete Sampras.
As an example, Kyrgios used the speed of the first serve that players today reach, comparing it to slower serves in the past. However, one thing he forgot to consider is how much better equipment players have these days.
After his comments, Boris Becker responded swiftly, as he wasn't happy with the Australian's comments. It didn't take too long before Kyrgios responded, and since then, the two have exchanged quite a few messages on social media.
But now, another former world no. 1 joined the conversation. Two-time Grand Slam champion and Olympics gold medalist, Yevgeny Kafelnikov used a similar argument to Becker,...

No one has earned more in tennis in 2023 than Novak Djokovic, even though he did not receive millions in bonus payments.
After players counted what they earned from prize money on the Atp Tour and Grand Slam tournaments in 2023, the result was obvious, Novak Djokovic earned the most.
However, it was not so clear after the bonus payments were added, because the 24-time Grand Slam champion was one of a few players in the Top 20 that did not receive a bonus payment.
The reason for that is simple, as Djokovic missed more than three Atp Masters 1000 mandatory tournaments, making him ineligible for the bonus payment.
Despite that, the Serbian superstar earned more than anyone else, bagging an impressive $15,952,044 throughout the 2023 season, ahead of his closest rival, Carlos Alcaraz.

The Ultimate Tennis Showdown is an interesting competition format created by famous coach Patrick Mouratoglou, and every edition shows very interesting things.
Tennis is a very traditional sport and throughout the years, there haven't been many changes to how the sport is played. Of course, there are some tournaments, such as the NextGen Atp Finals, that use an alternative format.
For example, the NextGen Atp Finals tournament is played as the best-of-five sets to four with a tie-break at 3-3. However, the format that Patrick Mouratoglou brought with the Uts is something that tennis has never seen before.
The Ultimate Tennis Showdown is played in quarters, instead of games and sets, and the traditional 15-30-40 is removed as well. Players earn just 1 point for each rally that they won (as they do in tie-break normally), unless they use a special card, another interesting twist to the event.

This year has been a historic one in terms of player earnings as we saw four players on the Atp Tour pass the $10 million mark, which is a first.
Any time you have a first in a sport like tennis, it's impressive. The sport has a very long history; however, this feat is actually one that will likely be eclipsed multiple times in the coming decade.
It's the earnings that increase every year because the sport grows every year. This year saw four players earn over 10 million in prize money, which is a first.
We never saw that happen in years past because less money was allocated generally. Parity certainly contributed to the feat this year, but we had parity in years past.

Carlos Alcaraz is the player who takes home the biggest amount of Atp bonus money thanks to his efforts during the 2023 season.
Tennis players earn money in several ways while competing on the Tour. Most of it is through prize money winnings, which are directly correlated with their performance.
Every stage of an event hands out a certain amount, but that's not the only money that players earn. Depending on how well they perform at certain events, they can also earn a bonus at the end of the year, which is distributed by the Atp and totals around $20 million.
Carlos Alcaraz is the player who took away the most bonus money this year after some tremendous performance throughout the year. The Spaniard tops the list with $4,443,073 ahead of Daniil Medvedev, number two on that list with $2,308,344.
Jannik Sinner finished 3rd on the bonus list with $2,106,872, which is a pretty big amount.

He eventually beat Gael "La Monf" Monfils, and the semifinal showdown was set. Previously, it seemed that the format of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown suited the Russian, while the Danish player struggled, but in the first quarter of the match, it looked to be the opposite.
Rune was the better player, winning the opening quarter in a dominant style 20-10, but the match got heated in the second quarter of the match, due to a misunderstanding.

Benoit Paire competed at the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (Uts) Grand Final in London, and he really enjoyed himself at the event.
The Frenchman is a real showman, and with so many players ranked high on the Atp Tour taking part at the 2023 Uts Grand Final, it wasn't really probable that he would make it out of the round robin stage.
Paire was in the group with Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and Diego Schwartzman. First, Rublev booked his semifinal spot on Friday, before Ruud bested Schwartzman on Saturday to advance.
The Frenchman, on the other hand, struggled against all of the players, but he came very close to winning his first match at the event, when he lost to Schwartzman only in the "Sudden Death", losing 17-11, 13-14, 10-21, 17-16, 4-5.
After that match, Paire lost to Ruud 12-17, 9-18, and 10-16, and later in his match against Rublev, it was...

Novak Djokovic's coach, Goran Ivanisevic, did not win the Atp's 2023 Coach of the Year award, and many were upset about it, including the Serbian himself.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion had one of the best seasons in his career, with his coach Ivanisevic guiding him along the way. However, it was Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi who won the Coach of the Year award, as they led Jannik Sinner during the 2023 season.
Immediately after the award was announced, many fans were enraged by the fact that it wasn't Djokovic's coach who got the award. Their rage was later supported by Djokovic as he also hit out at the Atp in a social media post.
But was Ivanisevic really snubbed when it comes to the Coach of the Year award, or was it given in-line with the past seasons and former winners? Well, let's look at the history.

Andrey Rublev came back from a quarter down to beat Casper Ruud at the Grand Final of the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (Uts) in London.
In the first match of the Uts Grand Final in London, Diego "El Peque" Schwartzman bested Benoit "The Rebel" Paire, 11-17, 14-13, 21-10, 16-17, 5-4, and after a high-quality opening match, it was time for the other two players, Casper "The Ice Man" Ruud and Andrey "Rublo" Rublev from Group A to show their qualities.
Competing on the Atp Tour before, in a much different environment, the two met seven times already, with Rublev winning five of those matches, most recently in Bastad this year. However, he didn't start that well in London in a match played in a first-to-three-quarters format, with each quarter lasting eight minutes.

On Friday, the International Olympic Committee (Ioc) announced that the Russian and Belarusian athletes will be eligible to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
In its statement, the Ioc clarified that the said athletes must meet certain conditions for their inclusion, one of which is to bear neutral status regarding their nationality. Contrary to reports that the decision would be made early next year, the timing has surprised many onlookers.
However, the International Tennis Federation (Itf), the principal governing body vested with the mandate of maintaining and enforcing the rules of international team competitions in tennis, has stipulated the eligibility requirements in its Olympics handbook that could throw a spanner in the works.
According to Itf rules, Russian and Belarusian tennis players are ineligible to play at the showpiece event in Paris because they can't represent their country.

The 2024 Olympics in Paris have laid out their clauses for athletes from Belarus and Russia to enter the games.
For a while now, it seemed that athletes from Russia and Belarus would be permitted to enter the 2024 Olympics despite protests from the Ukranian side. They felt a full ban on any individual from those countries was appropriate, but that did not happen, even with foreign support.
All of them will be playing under a neutral flag, which won't be too foreign for Russians, as they already did at the last games. Back then, athletes from Russia had to compete under the Russian Olympic Committee banner, not under the country flag, and this situation is similar.
Athletes from those two countries will include plenty of tennis players such as Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, and many more, will be registered as Individual Neutral Athletes (Ain), and they'll have to adhere to strict protocol.

After a 21-year absence, the Hong Kong Open will return to Victoria Park Tennis Centre to herald the start of the 2024 men's tennis season.
Running from January 1st to 7th, this tournament will be an essential destination for the Atp players looking to finetune their games in the buildup to the season's first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
The Hong Kong Open was a prominent event in the 90s with a gaudy list of former champions. Whoever wins the 2024 edition is primed to etch his name among some of the game's greats on the honor roll.
The biggest name in the recently-released entry list is that of World No. 5 Andrey Rublev. The Russian has fared brilliantly in the opening weeks of the season in the past. He won two titles at the turn of the year (in 2020) and was an Atp Cup champion the following season.

Andrey Rublev is quite known for his semi-regular outburst, which usually ends with a bloody knee and he finally addressed why the knee is the target of his rage.
Nobody can dispute that Rublev approaches tennis with a lot of passion because he showed it. He wears his emotions on his sleeve while on the court, especially. While it's not specific to Rublev, he has a rather signature way of dealing with his anger.
While most players usually unleash their anger on the court or the racquet, Rublev tends to make himself a target. The knees, in particular, carry the brunt of the damage most of the time, but not always. Just recently, he bloodied his knee at the Atp Finals, so much so that even Nick Kyrgios called it crazy.
In a recent interview with Championat, Rublev addressed something that usually gives people a lot of pause when it happens.
