Sandra Diaz-Twine was just voted out of “Survivor: Winners at War” in the one of the most cutthroat reality TV blindsides of all time. After a confident Sandra gave her hidden immunity idol to Denise Stapley in exchange for her fire tokens, Denise ended up using the idol to send home the “Survivor” Queen. “And now the question will be, how much gas does Sandra have in her tank?” host Jeff Probst wonders in his weekly recap video (watch above). “Does she want to fight to get back in?” he asks aloud. Um, Jeff, what exactly are you suggesting here?!

“Survivor” fans, there is good news and bad news when it comes to the upcoming 40th season, “Winners at War.” The good? If your favorite former players are voted out of the game there’s still a chance they can win. The bad? That’s because (spoiler alert!) the Edge of Extinction is back in play.
This controversial twist first popped up in Season 38 when memorable castaway Reem Daly became the first player voted out. Upon walking out of tribal council she was presented with a decision: stay in the game by boating to Extinction Island, or end her experience right then and there? As it turns out every castaway chose the boat option, though two — Keith Sowell and Wendy Diaz — quit not long after they arrived on the deserted island.

Over the past two decades of “Survivor” there have been nearly 40 winners who outwitted, outplayed and outlasted their fellow competitors to take home the $1 million prize. However, let’s not forget all those lovable losers that made a huge impact on the game (and our hearts) but came up short of actually winning. Click through our “Survivor” photo gallery above highlighting the 21 greatest castaways who didn’t win. Do you agree or disagree with our writer Tom O’Brien‘s choices?

In recent years the “Survivor” reunion show has slowly been snuffed out before our eyes, with last week’s live “Edge of Extinction” chatfest running for less than 30 minutes. That’s a far cry from the early years of the reality TV show when finale night would conclude with a full one-hour reunion following the two-hour final episode. According to our recent poll, viewers are nearly unanimous that they want “Survivor” to bring back the hour-long reunion show, with 89% voting yes and 11% voting no. Do you agree or disagree with those poll results? Sound off down in the comments section.

There are those “Survivor” fans whose dream is to compete in the game one day. Then there are those who, like me, would be satisfied to simply attend the taping of live portion of the finale and gawk at the players that they have been watching for weeks. Well, I can now cross that off my bucket list. I was part of the audience who participated in the three-hour wrap-up of Season 38, aka “Edge of Extinction.”
By now, you probably know that former Extinction Island dweller Chris Underwood somehow managed to win the title of Sole Survivor away from the favorite to take it all, idol-magnet Rick Devens, after only playing only 13 days. Controversial doesn’t even cover that outcome.
But that decision couldn’t spoil my opportunity to gaze upon such fan favorites as the season’s returning veteran players — Joe Anglim, Aubry Bracco, Kelley Wentworth and David Wright.

As Season 38 of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” comes to a close this Wednesday with a three-hour finale, it continues to deliver innovations — some good, some not so good — to CBS’ venerable reality show’s format. I still have mixed feelings about having a horde of eliminated players crawling around Extinction Island like Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings.” Reem Daly, the first voted-out contestant, is like a cranky Greek sea creature, barking out her displeasure as those who banished her arrive one by one.
And if I never see another “Survivor” cast-off standing before those three signs explaining their Extinction options and then basically saying, “Heck yeah, I’m going,” before grabbing that lit torch, I won’t miss it. Considering that only two contestants, Wendy Diaz and Keith Sowell, have actually left the game, that means the will be a record 13 jury members determining the fates of the...

“Survivor” fans, mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 15, 2019 as that’s when host Jeff Probst will officially announce the winner of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” After a hard-fought Season 38 that featured the reality TV show’s first-ever Extinction Island twist, in which every voted-out castaway was given the chance to return, one person will soon join the “Survivor” winners list. Will the next winner of “Survivor” be a 21-year-old college student from Waco, Texas?
According to Gold Derby’s “Edge of Extinction” racetrack odds, Lauren O’Connell is far ahead of the pack with leading 9/2 odds to win the $1 million check. It’s a huge show of support for the castaway who’s been on the bottom for most of the game — both physically and mentally. However, with a hidden immunity idol still in her pocket and the fact that she’s no longer tethered to huge targets like Kelley Wentworth (who was eliminated) and Dan “Wardog” DaSilva (who betrayed her), might Lauren sneak her way into the winner’s circle?

The audience has spoken. A whopping 44% of “Survivor” fans who voted in our recent poll say that they’re “so happy” Rick Devens returned from the Edge of Extinction in last week’s merge episode. Rick won the obstacle course challenge against fellow voted-out players Reem Daly, Keith Sowell, Chris Underwood, Aubry Bracco and Wendy Diaz, which earned him the right to return to the game and join the other 12 merged castaways. While Rick earned the most votes in our poll, Aubry came in second place with 26% saying that they wanted her to return instead.

In recent years the “Survivor” jury has been composed of anywhere from 8 to 10 ousted castaways, with “Survivor: Ghost Island” clocking in at a record 11 jury votes after a 5-5 tie required the third finalist, Laurel Johnson, to cast the deciding vote between eventual winner Wendell Holland and runner-up Domenick Abbate. That record is about to be shattered. If the rest of the current 38th season of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” plays out according to plan, with a Final 3 and no one else leaving the game, then a whopping 13 jury members will decide the winner.

With its island twist this season, “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” is more jam-packed with action given the need to show two locales and retain cast-offs who opt to try for another chance to get back in the game. Therefore, explanatory moments sometimes get left out.
Viewers watching Keith Sowell and Chris Underwood struggle for an advantage might think Keith resented Chris after he grabbed it away from him on Extinction Island. But, in an email interview with “Entertainment Weekly,” Keith — who voluntarily left the game along with Wendy Diaz last week — explains there was more to their feud than what made it on air.

“Survivor” fans were treated to a bonus two-hour episode this week on CBS that promised to spill more secrets about the fates of the voted-out castaways at Extinction Island. Reem Daly, Keith Sowell, Chris Underwood and Rick Devens, who had been doing their best to survive on the deserted island, were just joined by Aubry Bracco in Part 1. How did the big twists play out in Part 2, and what does this now mean for the remainder of the game?

Editor’s note: This post is our recap for Part 1 of the March 20 episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” Click here to be taken to our recap for Part 2.
Wednesday’s two-hour episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” which we’ll be recapping in two parts, promised “double the blindsides” and “double the emotion.” Heading into the big event, the four castaways most in danger of being eliminated, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, were Lauren O’Connell, Eric Hafemann, Gavin Whitson and David Wright. Were our readers’ predictions correct, or were they all blindsided, too? And did the Lesu lovefest continue even in Rick Devens‘ absence?

“Survivor: Edge of Extinction” is now four episodes in, so we are starting to get a sense of who will be the main players of this season and who are destined for elimination. The overall edit of this cast has been somewhat lopsided considering the same group of people has gone to Tribal Council every single episode, which means we don’t really have a sense of half the cast’s gameplay quite yet. With the original Manu tribe getting so much focus, there hasn’t been much room for original Kama to shine, though we have seen highlights from a handful of them. Below you will find my ranking of the seven “Survivor” castaways with the worst edits so far, whether that means they haven’t been shown much on the show or they have been seen in a negative light.

Episode 4 of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” was a shocking one for many who follow “the edit” when trying to figure out the winner. Rick Devens had been at the top or close to the top of many superfans’ lists of who had the winner’s edit this season, my own included, so it was a blindside to see him be voted out. He still has a chance of getting back into the game and winning thanks to Extinction Island, but this early elimination will surely make his path much harder.
With Rick off the board for now, we now look to other castaways still in the game to see if it is indeed they who have the winner’s edit. Let’s take a look at the top seven winner contenders after four episodes of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.”

Controversial “Survivor” winner Tony Vlachos will get a shout-out in Wednesday’s all-new episode when Kelley Wentworth compares her “Edge of Extinction” tribe mate Dan “Wardog” DaSilva to the former champion. “Wardog is a crazy man. I think he has like a little Tony in him,” Kelley confesses during CBS’s sneak peek video for this week’s special two-hour episode (watch above). And we’re not sure Kelley’s comparison is meant to be a compliment.

Tony made waves during his first season, “Survivor: Cagayan,” for the cutthroat way in which he treated his fellow players. However, he still ended up winning the $1 million prize. Tony later returned for “Survivor: Game Changers” where his reputation got the better of him and he ended up being the second castaway voted out.

In last week’s power rankings I hypothesized whether my early assessment that the four vets Kelley Wentworth, Aubry Bracco, David Wright or Joe Anglim were S.O.L. this season was misguided. But after the lop-sided tribe swap in episode 4 I’m even more sure that the vets are, well, almost certainly doomed. The swap — one of the most effectively useless since “All Stars” thirty seasons ago — resulted in every player except for one (chicken whisperer Wendy Diaz) being on the same tribe as people they were with previously. The mix up, if we can even call it that, tilts the scales back in favor of all the newbies, but especially the ones that already held the most power at the original Kama camp, Eric Hafemann and Ron Clark.
Below I update our weekly power rankings to reflect how both Eric and Ron fall into major power positions as...

To celebrate Kelley Wentworth turning 32 on the island, her “Survivor” tribe mates all sang “Happy Birthday” to her around the camp fire in yet another Lesu lovefest. “Hey, my third birthday on ‘Survivor’ — woohoo!” Kelley announces in CBS’s latest secret scene. This fan-favorite castaway from Seattle, Wa previously competed in “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” and “Survivor: Cambodia,” but might “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” finally be the season in which she claims the million dollar prize? “Survivor” Chicken-gate 2019 continued in this week’s tribe swap episode when Wendy Diaz did the unthinkable and actually let loose the chickens her tribe had won in a reward challenge. “The players signed up for this game, not the chickens, so why should they be penalized?” she wondered aloud. Well, Wendy’s new tribe member at the Manu camp, Victoria Baamonde, just decided to have some fun with all this season’s chicken drama by tweeting — what else? — a photo of half-eaten chicken bones (see below).

“I was very bummed,” Gold Derby’s Marcus James Dixon tells Susan Wloszczyna about Rick Devens being voted out in the fourth episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” He continues, “I liked this guy a lot and I think he could have won this whole thing — he’s so likeable.” Susan puts the blame solely on Dan “Wardog” DaSilva, this week’s swing vote who decided to side with Kelley Wentworth and Lauren O’Connell, thereby betraying Rick and David Wright. Watch our “Survivor” video recap above for Season 38, Episode 4.

Don't say she didn't warn you: Wendy Diaz, the blue-haired castaway who just released the chickens on Survivor: Edge of Extinction, was always planning on freeing the birds.
Over the course of two Edge of Extinction episodes, Diaz's tribe won a reward that included egg-laying chickens. As the members of Manu openly discussed killing and eating one of the chickens, Diaz was quietly nursing a plan of her own: releasing the chickens before Kelley Wentworth, David Wright, Rick Devens and the rest could turn Diaz's beloved animal sidekicks into food. After trying and failing to enlist others in her plan ...

“I’d already been picturing myself eating a burger as I left tribal, but holy crap — I’m still in this!” declared Georgia newscaster Rick Devens during his exit interview from “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” In Wednesday’s fourth episode, Rick was eliminated from his brand new Lesu tribe by a 3-2 vote over Lauren O’Connell, with Dan “Wardog” DaSilva being the swing vote who sided with Lauren and Kelley Wentworth over the bromance of Rick and David Wright. Did the Lesu tribe make the right decision? Vote in our poll below.

During Wednesday’s tribe swap episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the seemingly impossible happened when 15 people grabbed new buffs at random and 14 of them ended up with their old tribe mates. Wendy Diaz was the only person to find herself at a camp full of fresh faces. While Wendy chose to look at this as a positive, there’s no denying the fact that strategically she was now on thin ice. The good news for Wendy is that the same thing happened to Amber Brkich 30 seasons ago on “Survivor: All Stars” … and she won.
After the dust settled on the season’s first tribe swap, Wendy found herself at her old Manu camp along with four old Kama players: Aubry Bracco, Victoria Baamonde, Gavin Whitson and Eric Hafemann. Host Jeff Probst blatantly told Wendy, “If ‘Survivor’ is a game of numbers and these four are tight, you would be in trouble.

“Drop your buffs!” Those three words instill either fear or elation in every single “Survivor” contestant, and this season’s group was no different. After Jeff Probst made the announcement that the two tribes would become three, how did the new tribal dynamics play out? Did Wendy Diaz really risk her game by letting the chickens loose, as the preview trailer hinted? And who ended up joining Reem Daly, Keith Sowell and Chris Underwood at Extinction Island?

After only three episodes of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the remaining 15 castaways are about to experience the twist of all twists on Wednesday night when their two tribes become three. “You don’t know what’s goin’ on,” teases host-with-the-most Jeff Probst in CBS’s preview trailer for Season 38, Episode 4, titled “I Need a Dance Partner.” Julie Rosenberg, currently a member of the yellow Kama camp, responds that the tribe swap “just immediately turns your whole game upside-down.” Watch the “Survivor” video clip above.

You would think that Manu tribe member Wendy Diaz had enough to worry about after she injured her ankle last week during a reward challenge on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” But she was more concerned about the fate of the reward – namely a clutch of chickens. But while Dan “The Wardog” DaSilva was practically smacking his lips at the prospect that meat might be in reach, Wendy was plotting to save the poultry’s necks. “The players signed up for this game, not the chickens, so why should they be penalized,” Wendy explained, which is a bit odd since she is neither a vegetarian nor a vegan and normally eats chicken back home. We must invoke another bird — cuckoo!

During the third episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” you may recall that Wendy Diaz hurt her ankle during the challenge and had to resort to hobbling around using a makeshift stick as a crutch. Unfortunately, some of Wendy’s Manu tribe members now find humor in her pain and decide to make fun of her behind her back, which absolutely disgusts David Wright. “She’s a part of the tribe. We need to make her feel comfortable rather than making fun of her,” David declares in CBS’s latest “Survivor” deleted scene (watch above).

So far it seems that the narrative thrust of this season is going to be newbies vs. the vets and all I can see right now is the newbies with a significant upper hand. Vets Kelley Wentworth and Aubry Bracco are in horrible positions while Joe Anglim and David Wright are being used as shields by newbies smarter than them.
