He had among his contenders a singer who stood head and shoulders above the rest. That she should continue on wasn’t merely obvious, it was, like, mandatory. Yet he cut her...

Exclusive: The McG-led Wonderland Sound and Vision is developing a new docuseries based on the alleged crimes of Anthony Farrer, a high-end watch dealer and social media influencer who ran a consignment store in Beverly Hills.
Farrer, whose business was called the Timepiece Gentleman, would collect luxury watches from customers with the promise to sell them on consignment at no more than a 5 percent fee. Instead, he amassed exotic cars, enjoyed extravagant trips and dinners, and rented $100,000-per-month penthouse while operating his business from November of 2022 through August of 2023.
The story came to a head when a whistleblower posted a secret conversation between him and Farrer on TikTok, where Farrer confessed to losing $5 million of his customers’ and investors’ money. At least 20 victims were allegedly duped by Farrer, according to the Nyt.

Exclusive: A story about a Fiji surf paradise gone wrong by David Kushner, the journalist behind A24’s Zola, is to be turned into a documentary.
Kushner has penned Paradise Lost for Vanity Fair and the story is now being adapted by Anchor Entertainment, the production company behind HBO’s Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall, and Vanity Fair Studios.
The story follows Navrin, Woody, and Jona – two Aussie surfer bros and their local partner – who thought they’d found their own little slice of paradise in Fiji. That was until the deep-pocketed Chinese developer set up shop next door and started digging up the reef offshore. Then a Silicon Valley-backed scientist who swears he can build the perfect surf break got involved and the whole place became a stopover for the pandemic-era megayacht set.

No one likes the feeling of stagnation. A character reaches his breaking point in David Kushner’s “Miserable Man,” an acoustic ballad from January that’s as sparse as a one-horse town. “Let’s pack our stuff now and run away,” the narrator implores, though in truth it sounds like he can barely muster the energy to get out of bed.
A month later, actress-singer Dove Cameron tried to snap a love interest out of a stagnant relationship with “Boyfriend,” which has the swoony opulence of a James Bond theme song.

A’Ziah “Zola” King, who wrote the infamous 2015 Twitter thread that inspired A24’s 2020 film “Zola,” is now speaking out against the production company over being excluded from the film’s awards recognition.
On Sunday, King retweeted a post by Film Independent, the organization behind the Independent Spirit film awards, writing, “I think it’s hilarious ‘Zola’ is up for 7 awards and no one thought to invite me nor include me In the writers award category. As if there would’ve been a film or a script to write if I didn’t um… write it?”
She continued: “I think its Hilarious everyone else is on my Television promoting & speaking on my experience as if it’s their moment and not a moment I created for us all. I think it’s hilarious my intellect, trauma and talent is being overshadowed and hijacked.”

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Since the birth of cinema, movies have adapted plays and books for source material. In recent years, comic books, video games and even podcasts have inspired feature films. Zola may be the first ever film adapted from a Twitter thread.
A’Ziah King told the story in an infamous 2015 Twitter thread under her name @_zolamoon. She began, “Y’all wanna hear a story about why me and this b**** here fell out????? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.”
Janicza Bravo’s film adaptation recounts the story of how Stefani (Riley Keough) invited Zola (Taylour Paige) — both Detroit waitresses — to Florida for a dancing gig. Stefani’s pimp, X (Colman Domingo), actually tried to set the girls up for sex work. Drugs, violence...

“Who you gonna be tonight?” is a question I’ve asked in the mirror a hundred times.
Maybe because I’m a Black woman who wants to have control over how other people see my body, instead of the other way around, and because I know I look like something to everybody. (“What do I look like to you?”)

David Kushner, a bestselling author and journalist whose stories are often developed for film and television, will publish his next book at Substack.
Kushner’s magazine articles have inspired films like A24’s “Zola” and upcoming projects involving Christian Bale and Spike Lee. Substack, a subscription newsletter service, will now be home to his new work “Masters of Disruption: How the Gamer Generation Built the Future,” which will see a serialized release and feature multimedia components over 9 installments. The book is a sequel of sorts to his 2003 bestseller “Masters of Doom,” from Random House.
Normally found in the pages of Rolling Stone, Wired and Vanity Fair, Kushner follows an increasing number of journalists going the newsletter route. It’s notable that an author as frequently adapted as Kushner would seek a deal like this, which guarantees him sole adaptive rights in an age where publishing houses like Conde Nast have ambitious content production divisions.

Based on a viral 2015 Twitter thread, “Zola” isn’t the first movie about social media, but it might be the first that truly captures the chaotic frenzy of how social media intersects social justice and entertainment.
Told through the lens of A’Ziah “Zola” King, aka @_zolarmoon, the Detroit waitress who wrote the original 148-tweet thread, the film embraces the contrasting parallels that exist within the characters while also frankly unveiling an alternate America that mainstream society simultaneously praises and shuns.
Zola has resigned herself to her life. She waits tables in a restaurant that’s just a tier above fast food and is sleepwalking through life when she meets co-worker Stefani (Riley Keough). The two quickly bond, talking about their shared side-hustle, stripping, and numbers are exchanged. Over the next day, the bond tightens over texts, and Zola soon finds herself agreeing to go on a road trip to Florida with Stefani,...

The biblical story of Jesus is considered by many “the greatest story ever told”. In fact, it is so much so that there was a whole movie about the big J titled The Greatest Story Ever Told. Well, if there were a Twitter equivalent of the greatest story ever told, it would definitely be the Janicza Bravo-directed Zola (opening in theaters June 30).
The synopsis of the A24 film based on the real-life tweets from A’Ziah-Monae “Zola” King that captivated the world reads: “Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.”
Bravo co-wrote the film with Jeremy O. Harris and the pair used the aforementioned epic viral 148-Twitter thread as well as David Kushner’s Rolling Stone article “Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted” — and it is an epic saga indeed.

Back in 2015, a Hooters waitress from Detroit named Aziah "Zola" Wells King decided to go on a road trip to Florida with one of her customers, never expecting that the trip would involve stripping, prostitution, drugs, and even murder. Over the course of a 148-tweet thread, King recounted the whole wild tale, which gained even more traction thanks to David Kushner's November 2015 Rolling Stone piece, "Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted." King's story is coming to the big screen this summer in Zola, which stars Taylour Paige and Riley Keough, but if you're wondering what the real King is up to now, here's the scoop.

Janicza Bravo’s wild Tampa-set adaptation of A’ziah “Zola” King’s Twitter thread––aptly titled Zola––was primed to be the hit of the summer last year. With the pandemic causing A24 to delay much of their slate, eventually giving First Cow and Minari digital releases, Zola was also pushed, but will now land this June––nearly 1.5 years after its Sundance premiere. Ahead of the release, the first full trailer has arrived.
I said in my Sundance review, “Twitter is Shakespeare for the 21st century and, as Zola proves, Janicza Bravo is the director best adept at bringing all the peculiarity, hilarity, and ugliness of social media mayhem to the big screen. After a long delay dating all the way back to Sundance 2020, A24’s “Zola” — based on the viral Twitter thread about a stripper’s wild road trip — finally has a release date and a full trailer.

Moviegoers, Zola is ready for her close-up. Janicza Bravo’s rambunctious road trip dramedy “Zola” was one of the breakout sensations of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, but the pandemic has prevented it from opening in theaters for well over a year. That changes this summer, as A24 is finally set to release the well-reviewed indie. The official “Zola” trailer has now dropped (watch below) and it showcases the crackling onscreen chemistry between costars Taylour Paige and Riley Keough.
The official “Zola” synopsis from A24 reads: “Zola (Taylour Paige), a Detroit waitress, strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who seduces her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of ‘hoeism’ rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale.

When a dramatic feature film gets made out of an investigative magazine article, there’s usually some conventional heroic hook to it. But not always. “Silk Road,” written and directed by Tiller Russell, is
During the two years of its existence, Silk Road was an underground Amazon or eBay of drugs — a platform where dealers and buyers could find each other, which meant that you could order a nicely priced, vacuum-sealed package of cannabis or Ecstasy or pharmaceutical-grade cocaine and have it delivered to your door through the U.S. Postal Service. The person who dreamed this all up, and ran the site under the cult-like pseudonym of the Dread Pirate Roberts, was Ross Ulbricht, a 26-year-old libertarian gadfly from Austin, Tex., who convinced himself that by creating an underground marketplace for illegal narcotics, he was striking a blow against the system.

A narration opens Tiller Russell’s Silk Road. A young man in a hoody, shades, and flip-flops walks San Francisco’s streets and discusses the barriers between the world as it is and the world that he wants. The world he wants is one of total autonomy and freedom from government control. “Every action we take outside government control strengthens the market and weakens the state,” he says. As a result, and as a way to “take back our liberty,” he creates Silk Road, a website where anyone can buy and sell anything anonymously. The film follows a naive, bright-eyed libertarian and the creation of the biggest online marketplace of illegal goods, the notorious criminal named Dread Pirate Roberts he becomes, and the subsequent investigation by law enforcement that follows. As David Kushner writes in the Rolling Stone article the film is based on, Silk Road “made Ross Ulbricht one...

Exclusive: Pluto, the puppy Internet sensation of quarantine, has got just herself what she would call “two-legged” representation. The “talking” miniature Schnauzer beloved by stars like Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Sia and Robin Wright has been signed by The Gotham Group, which produced The Maze Runner franchise and Disney+’s Stargirl, and literary agency Sterling Lord Literistic, which has bestselling author Rachel Maddow among its clients. Deadline hears a television project will likely be Pluto’s first pursuit.
Pluto recently found fame with her Pluto Living PSAs, otherwise known as Pluto Service Announcements, in which she “tells’ viewers—whom she calls “two-leggeds”—everything from how to relieve stress during quarantine, to reminding us to appreciate our healthcare workers.
Beginning with a Facebook video on March 17 (see it below), Pluto’s Canada-based owner Nancie Wight decided the terrier would be great at cheering people through quarantine, and thus, a star was born.
