On Sunday, Allstate is trading in its famous Mayhem character for chaos of a different sort.
The big insurance company is testing a sponsorship of a new kind of sporting event that will feature some of Pixar’s best-known animated characters tackling a real-life NFL game. When the Jacksonville Jaguars play the Atlanta Falcons at 9:30 a.m. Sunday from London’s Wembley Stadium, Disney+ and ESPN+ will stream the game in decidedly non-traditional fashion. Pixar’s famous “Toy Story” characters will emulate the real-life gridiron action. And instead of commercials, fans will see football trivia questions from Allstate when the game goes to a break.
Allstate wants to reach the audience that would tune in such as event, says Dave Marsey, the company’s senior vice president of media, but there’s little desire “to disrupt the creativity and just throw a spot in it,” he says. This method...

The NFL and Disney are planning to take an upcoming game telecast to infinity and beyond.
ESPN+ and Disney+ will present a fully animated, real-time alternate telecast of the Oct. 1 game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons. The game, one of the league’s yearly London matchups, is ESPN’s first regular season contest that’s exclusive to ESPN+ (save for over-the-air broadcast in the teams’ home markets). The animated version will take place in Pixar’s Toy Story universe, on a field laid out on the floor of Andy’s room. (The league’s NFL+ platform will also carry the alternate presentation.)
The presentation, which Disney has dubbed “Toy Story Funday Football,” is arguably the most ambitious alternate-feed telecast of an NFL game to date, and in keeping with commissioner Roger Goodell’s aggressive push into streaming and alternate presentations beyond the league’s traditional broadcast footprint. Disney on Tuesday followed NBCUniversal and Fox in presenting its content slate to advertisers. Like them, it bet heavily on sports, news and reality personalities amid the WGA strike, which prompted street picketing outside New York’s Javits Center.
However, testing the patience of the attendees, Disney went double the length of the Monday presentations, with little attention to ABC’s strike-contingent, reality-heavy fall schedule unveiled earlier in the day.
Disney kicked off its upfront presentation in an expected fashion, with a flashy highlight reel that drove home the “magic” of the Mouse House. A brief voice over from Ellen Pompeo reminded the audience that “when the imagination is limitless, life’s possibilities are endless,” as they settled in for the lengthy two-hour presentation. Here were the highlights:
The first hour of the presentation included lots of talk about sports and people having babies, beginning with none other than Serena Williams,...

Ouch. That looked like it hurt. Laura Rutledge suffered a major blow last weekend while covering the Georgia Bulldogs' football game against the UMass Minutemen in Athens, Ga. ESPN has set a radical new game plan for “Get Up!” its ambitious attempt at a morning sports-talk show that has so far failed to gain the network a broader audience in the time slot.
The Walt Disney-owned network said co-host Michelle Beadle, one of its most colorful and distinctive personalities, would leave the program as of August 29, and move to Los Angeles to focus more intently on her other duties at ESPN as the host of its popular “NBA Countdown.” The basketball program had originated from ESPN’s Los Angeles production facilities before moving to New York to accommodate Beadle’s new morning duties as well as those of “Get Up” co-host Jalen Rose. The former NBA star is expected to continue working on “Get Up” when “he has no ‘NBA Countdown’ responsibilities in Los Angeles,” the network said.
