He gained his love of architecture when he saw buildings from the air while flying as an RAF pilot in the 1950s.
Although he was born into a middle-class family in Bedfordshire, he identified very much with working-class northern towns and cities. He arranged for his place of birth on his death certificate to be recorded (incorrectly) as Newcastle upon Tyne.
