A lively CinemaCon presentation closed out with spectacular first footage from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II as studio top brass mostly put speculation of mergers and acquisitions behind them to focus on a rich upcoming slate.
Yet there was scarcely a mention of Mission: Impossible 8, the next instalment in the spy action franchise from Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie due out on May 23, 2025.
Paramount Pictures president and CEO Brian Robbins introduced a recorded piece from director Ridley Scott and stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington. Ahead of the November 22 release later this year, the...

Oscar winner Damien Chazelle has set his next feature with Paramount.
The La La Land filmmaker wrote and will direct the feature, with plot details being kept under wraps. The movie is being produced under Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton’s Wild Chickens Productions banner, as part of their first look deal with the studio that was signed in 2022. Plot details are not yet known and talent has yet to be attached but the project is a priority for the studio.
Chazelle is acting as a producer on another Paramount feature: the David Ayer directed Heart of the Beast. Heart of the Beast also falls under his first-look pact with Paramount.
The director and the studio last worked together on Babylon, the Hollywood epic that starred Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. That film, which was released as theaters were recovering from the pandemic, grossed $63 million at the global box office with...

A new film from Damien Chazelle is officially in the works as his follow-up to the ambitious and costly Old Hollywood epic “Babylon.”
Chazelle will make his follow-up to “Babylon” with the same studio that released that film, Paramount Pictures. Chazelle will direct, write, and produce the for-now-untitled film that was announced at CinemaCon on Thursday morning. The untitled film will be his sixth feature.
No plot details or cast were revealed, but the “La La Land” filmmaker’s film is expected to hit theaters next year, and he will produce alongside Olivia Hamilton under their Wild Chickens Productions banner as part of their first look deal with Paramount, which was announced back in 2022 after the release of “Babylon.”
Chazelle recently admitted that, financially at least, “Babylon” “didn’t work at all” and he worried he wouldn’t get his next film made.

Paramount Pictures will back Damien Chazelle’s next feature film.
The collaboration reunites the director with the studio behind his most recent movie, 2022’s “Babylon,” a debauched and drug-fueled ode to the golden age of showbiz. Despite its grand ambitions and starry cast of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, “Babylon” became an epic box office disaster with just $63 million worldwide against its $80 million budget (not including the pricey marketing campaign).
Paramount announced Chazelle’s new movie as part of its presentation at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of movie theater owners that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. The studio didn’t share a single detail — not the genre, cast, plot or release timeline — about Chazelle’s new film. Of course, Paramount didn’t reveal the budget either, although Chazelle presumably won’t get the same blank check to fund the upcoming movie.

David Ayer recently turned heads with The Beekeeper, a seemingly run-of-the-mill Jason Statham action film that turned out to be a strange mish-mash of ideas and bold choices that still feels like a fever dream. Ayer has had some hits under his belt, but as a whole, the filmmaker’s resume has some divisive receptions among them. This brings us to the interesting partnering with the Whiplash, La La Land and Babylon director Damien Chazelle. As Chazelle attempts to recover from Babylon‘s flopping, the First Man director will only be producing the new film that Ayer will helm.
Deadline reports that Ayer will be directing Heart of the Beast. The film will come from Chazelle and spouse Olivia Hamilton’s company, Wild Chicken Productions, as part of their first look deal with Paramount. The 2023 Venice Film Festival is underway, and while the Hollywood strikes have kept the bulk of the stars from attending the lauded fest, the red carpet isn’t entirely devoid of actors and has been host to a number of filmmakers from Wes Anderson to Michael Mann (directors are not on strike). Actors like “Ferrari” star Adam Driver were able to attend after receiving an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA that allows for independent productions that adhere to SAG-AFTRA’s terms to move forward during the strike.
This gallery will be updated as the festival continues, but right now peruse red carpet photos featuring Driver, Mann, Anderson, Patrick Dempsey, Caleb Landry Jones, Jane Campion, Mads Mikkelsen, Anna Diop, David Fincher, Sofia Coppola and more.

With the Screen Actors Guild Awards just around the corner, one has to wonder: Does more talent on screen automatically translate to more awards?
In the 27-year history of the ensemble film award (it was first awarded at the second ceremony), the movie with the largest cast has triumphed 11 times. The winning films are, in order, “Shakespeare in Love” (1998) with 12 eligible cast members, “Traffic” (2000) with 19, “Gosford Park” (2001) with 20, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) with 19, “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) with 11, “Inglourious Basterds” (2009) with 16, “The King’s Speech” (2010) with nine, “The Help” (2011) with 12, “Argo” (2012) with 13, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) with 11 and “Black Panther” (2018) with 12.
This translates to the films with the largest ensembles winning approximately 40 percent of the time, so one could say that the odds are not in their favor, but it’s not unheard of for them to win either. This then raises the question: What are...

You’ve never seen Hollywood quite like the way it’s portrayed in “Babylon,” the new film from Oscar-winning “La La Land” and “First Man” filmmaker Damien Chazelle. This three-hour epic takes place in the late 1920s and opens in a debauchery-filled Hollywood in the heyday of silent films, as it then chronicles a trio of characters through the transition to talkies. Chazelle assembled an all-star cast for the film, including Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, and holds nothing back in this R-rated drama that has drawn more than a few comparisons to Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.”
So if “Babylon” is the film you’re looking to watch over the holiday break, you may be wondering how and where to see it. All your questions answered below.

Diego Calva knows that his experience on Babylon was not traditional. First of all, to get the role of Manny Torres, a wide-eyed striver who moves up the ranks of the film industry in its nascent days, the Mexican actor did “30 or 40” self-tapes. Then he moved into the Los Angeles home of director Damien Chazelle and his wife, producer and actress Olivia Hamilton, for about 12 days. “We rehearsed the whole movie in his backyard, like a bizarre kind of summer camp,” says Calva. In the evening, they’d watch movies and film clips, studying Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon or Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights.
There was a “metafictional” element to Calva’s experience on Chazelle’s ambitious film. Like his character, Calva, 30, is a newbie to Hollywood suddenly in the orbit of some of the biggest stars in the business, in this case Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.

Ais’ honor will be bestowed upon the Babylon filmmaker by Kelly’s widow and biographer, Patricia Ward Kelly. Chazelle is only the second-ever recipient of the award, following Guillermo del Toro, who claimed the inaugural prize last year. He will be honored at the Advanced Imagining Society’s awards luncheon along with Avatar: The Way of Water collaborators James Cameron and Jon Landau, who were set last month to receive the Voices For the Earth Award.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” is a long, long journey through the early days of Hollywood. At a sprawling 189 minutes, the film has one of the longest runtimes of any commercially released film this year, just narrowly beaten by “Avatar: The Way of Water.” But Chazelle made a far shorter version of the film — it was just filmed in his backyard on his iPhone.
During a Los Angeles Q&a for “Babylon” (via Entertainment Weekly) this November, Chazelle told the audience that he prepared for filming by rehearsing and shooting a full two-hour version of the movie in his backyard. To accomplish the task, Chazelle roped in his wife, Olivia Hamilton, who plays silent film director Ruth Adler in the movie and his leading man Diego Calva, to play every part in the film.
“We rehearsed the whole movie in his backyard, only Olivia, Damien and I,” Calva said at the Q&a.

There’s a whole other, very rough version of “Babylon” out there.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” is one of the biggest box office bombs of the year, opening to just 5.3 million over the four-day Christmas weekend despite a production budget north of 80 million. Many box office pundits have cited the film’s gargantuan 189-minute runtime as one reason the Hollywood epic failed to connect with audiences. “Babylon” clocks in at three hours and nine minutes long, but it turns out Chazelle has a far shorter and far scrappier version of the film on his iPhone.

In the late 1920s, silent era filmmaking was at the height of its artistry, and Hollywood was one big, debaucherous party. This was the roaring twenties, after all. In fact, it was the depravity — on screen and off — of this era that led to the creation of the Production Code that would handicap studio films for decades to come.
Although many films have paid tribute to these wild, early days like James Ivory’s “The Wild Party” or Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist,” few have boasted as impressive a grasp the magic and darkness of its history and mythology as Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon.” This era is a perfect collision of all the Oscar winner’s interests.

"Are you okay? You're sweating." Paramount has revealed two more "Naughty" and "Nice" trailers (which one are you?) for Damien Chazelle's Babylon, arriving in theaters later this week just before the holidays. Set in old Hollywood during the transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s, Babylon traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. The film's extraordinary cast features Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie and Diego Calva as the three co-leads, along with Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Byrne, Lukas Haas, Olivia Hamilton, Tobey Maguire, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, Flea, Jeff Garlin, Eric Roberts, Ethan Suplee, and Samara Weaving. The 3-hour long film has such an excess of debauchery, showing how crazy Hollywood was way back in the 1920s. Hence why they're focusing on this for the final marketing push. Maybe...

To hear Damien Chazelle tell the story of how he ended up casting Diego Calva as the lead of his new film “Babylon,” it almost sounds like a scene cut out of “Babylon.” “I saw a headshot randomly and I was just like, ‘Oh, that’s the face of a dreamer,’” Chazelle told GQ about finding Calva. “‘Those eyes have real poetry in them. Who is this guy? Has he ever acted before?’”
As it turned out, Calva had acted for years in his native Mexico and appeared on the Netflix series “Narcos: Mexico.” But “Babylon” was at an entirely different scale than what came before – a lavish Hollywood production set in the 1920s and 1930s where the actor shares scenes with Oscar winner Brad Pitt and two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie.

Any movie with an opening sequence featuring a close-up of an elephant’s anus spraying diarrhea on hapless bystanders is certainly announcing itself as something, and by the end of the three hours and eight minutes of Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” viewers will have been exposed to any number of bodily secretions, including urine, vomit and tears.
The tears come at the film’s climax, no doubt in the hopes that the audience will follow suit, but of all the aforementioned emittances, they feel the least organic to this bloated, hyperbolized and ultimately dreary extravaganza of decadence and nostalgia.
Both a valentine and a poison-pen letter to the American film industry in its infancy, “Babylon” aspires to the grandiosity of “The Last Tycoon” and “The Day of the Locust,” though it more often recalls Ryan Murphy’s embarrassing and wildly ahistorical “Hollywood” miniseries.

After enormous success and Oscars for films ranging from Whiplash to La La Land to First Man, writer-director Damien Chazelle returned to an early dream project first envisioned 15 years ago — a no-holds-barred look at early Hollywood, a time when not only movies were transitioning from silent to sound but Los Angeles itself was booming from desert to bulging metropolis. People were caught up in a turbulent time of change, and it didn’t always work out for some. As witnessed in the resulting film and years of meticulous research, Babylon is a sight to behold, a decadent, freewheeling, at times even poignant look at a series of dreamers, stars, fringe players and all who wanted a piece of a world that felt out of control, uninhibited and full of promise — and downfall.

Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, in its tale of how the talkies rocked the silent motion picture era, is no doubt, a metaphor for the streaming revolution which is impacting the film industry today.
We dive deep into the topic today on Crew Call with the Oscar winning La La Land filmmaker and his Babylon producer Matthew Plouffe, a former Focus Features exec who first heard about the director’s dream to make a 1920s-Hollywood-set feature some 13 years ago after meeting him.
“If you want your movie to play on the big screen, you have to go grab it, you have to demand it,” Plouffe tells us about the survival of original movies on the big screen.
“I think filmmakers embrace that: What is going to bring people to the bring screen? How can i grab that audience? I hope that inspires them. It’s what inspired me when we were making this movie.
