Hammer began putting their own stamp on the classic Universal Monsters with The Curse of Frankenstein back in 1957, which was quickly followed by Horror of Dracula in 1958. It was the first of many films to star Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, and Neca has announced this week that they’ve turned that version of the classic character into a new action figure.
Neca previews their upcoming Horror of Dracula (1958) – Ultimate Count Dracula 7″ Scale Action Figure, “Neca presents the first in a series of action figures from the legendary Hammer House of Horror! Hammer has produced landmark horror since the 1950s, with one of its most famous being Horror of Dracula.
“The film captured audiences with its mix of vivid color, carnality, and violence, and Christopher Lee’s portrayal of Dracula is considered a benchmark against which other depictions are measured. This Ultimate Dracula action figure stands in 7” scale and includes removable fabric cape,...

The third feature by director Michele Soavi—his second collaboration with producer/co-writer Dario Argento—has been called “deranged” (We Are Cult), “disturbing” (Blu-ray.com) and “long overdue for reevaluation” (Bloody Disgusting). Now it can be experienced like never before: As a global satanic cabal grows in ferocity, an unwitting young schoolteacher (Kelly Curtis—sister of Jamie Lee—in her sole genre role) is chosen to deliver the ultimate evil. Herbert Lom (Count Dracula), Mariangela Giordano (Burial Ground), and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (The House on the Edge of the Park) co-star in “a nightmarish fever dream from a visionary filmmaker” (Good Efficient Butchery), scanned in 4K from the original negative with over three hours of special features—including new interviews with Soavi and Argento—for the first time ever.

Spring has been filled with scares, like Sydney Sweeney’s “Immaculate,” the “Omen” prequel “First Omen” and the talk-show thriller “Late Night With the Devil” in recent weeks. Now the vampiric “Abigail,” from the directors of the last two “Scream” movies, is sinking its teeth into the box office with $1 million in previews so far.
“Abigail” is expected to make between $12 million to $15 million in its opening weekend, edging out last week’s champion, A24’s “Civil War.” Universal’s R-rated horror only cost $28 million, so as long as the first weekend hits the higher end of estimates, it should have no issues making a profit by the end of its theatrical run.
Starring a young vampire ballerina, who is the daughter of one Count Dracula, “Abigail” follows a group of criminals who get way in over the heads after kidnapping the girl. Their $50 million heist goes south when they...

"Abigail" is hitting theaters this weekend, bringing audiences a new vampire film to sink their teeth into. With that in mind, we're turning to the granddaddy of all vampires, Dracula! There are a lot of Dracula movies. Too many to Count, in fact (pun intended). Dracula has been to space ("Dracula 3000"). Dracula has turned out to be Judas Iscariot ("Dracula 2000"). Dracula has been to the Old West ("Billy the Kid Versus Dracula").
Hell, Dracula has been with us more or less since horror movies began (with the unauthorized adaptation "Nosferatu"). With that in mind, it's probably impossible to make a comprehensive list of every Dracula movie. So we're not even going to try to do that. Instead, we're going to list the five best Dracula movies, ranked. With so many Drac-centric flicks out there, any list like this is bound to be controversial. If your personal favorite Dracula movie didn't make the list,...

Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley would certainly raise a toast to their characters in Jose Prendes’ Monster Mash. Victor Frankenstein sends his creature Boris to abduct Count Dracula’s daughter, Elisabeta. Dracula gathers a few old friends who are victims of Frankenstein to stop him from creating a monster that can be the end of the world. A fright warning before the climax is one of the funniest things in this crazy rollercoaster of a movie.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Movie?
Count Dracula finds her daughter missing from her chambers. Elisabeta’s attendant Pia leads Dracula to his daughter’s lover, Mila. Mila is a witch who is into necromancy when she’s not at the bar. A remnant of a fake Egyptian relic leads the Count to pursue Ramses. Frankenstein sends Boris to collect Ramses’ immortal heart, along with the skin of the invisible man, Griffin. Now that almost every popular celebrity in Hollywood seems to be migrating toward superhero franchises, mostly the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe, many might expect Adam Sandler to follow suit. This is especially true as he is unarguably one of the most popular and influential figures in the entertainment industry.
Adam Sandler in Hustle. Credit: Netflix.
But even if he does get cast into either one of the franchises, which character could he best embody? Well, while there may not be many roles that would suit him (even though Sandler could quite perfectly embody any character), there is one supervillain from the Dcu who is equal parts maniacal as well as ridiculous enough for Sandler: Mister Mxyzptlk.

Christopher Lee (The Wicker Man) gives one of his most unforgettable performances as Judge Jeffreys, the infamous 17th-century witchfinder whose unholy obsession with a luscious wench (Maria Rohm of Eugenie) fuels a jaw-dropping spree of torture, brutality and flesh-ripping perversion. Howard Vernon (Succubus), Margaret Lee (Five Golden Dragons), Maria Schell (99 Women), and Oscar nominee Leo Genn (Quo Vadis) co-star in this landmark epic of sexual violence and sadism, complete with a superb score by Bruno Nicolai (Count Dracula) and directed with spectacularly deviant glee by the one and only Jess Franco (Venus in Furs).

Cineastes the world over know about the scandal surrounding F.W. Murnau's horror classic "Nosferatu." It's clearly an adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula," but Murnau infamously didn't obtain the rights to adapt Stoker's book into a screenplay. He changed the names of the characters -- most notably Count Dracula was changed into Count Orlock -- but that didn't stop Stoker's estate from suing Prana Film, the production company. Every copy of "Nosferatu" was ordered to be destroyed. Thanks to shiftlessness in this task, however, several prints survived, and audiences can enjoy and be terrified by "Nosferatu" to this day. For my money, it's one of the scariest movies ever made. ("The Lighthouse" director Robert Eggers is currently remaking it.)
In Rolf Giesen's 2019 book "The Nosferatu Story: The Seminal Horror Film, Its Predecessors and Its Enduring Legacy," the premiere of "Nosferatu" is described in detail, and Prana...

There are a lot of "Frankenstein" movies. There's even one in theaters right now: "Lisa Frankenstein," a fun 80s-set horror-comedy-romance brew (read /Film's review here).
One could even say the story of "Frankenstein" birthed the horror genre as we know it today, both in literature (thanks to Mary Shelley's "Modern Prometheus") and in film. James Whale's 1931 "Frankenstein," arriving on the heels of "Dracula," cemented the age of Universal Horror and proved that monsters could be crowd-pleasers.
Countless sequels and remakes later, everyone knows the basics of the story. Dr. Frankenstein (first name usually Victor) sets out to create life in a reanimated corpse. The result is a Creature, unpleasant to the eye, and soon Frankenstein experiences the wrath of his Monster. Was Frankenstein's Monster born destructive or made that way by his creator rejecting him? Interpretations differ, but the message endures: don't play God (or become a parent...

Luc Besson will helm a movie based on Dracula titled Dracula – A Love Tale, dubbed “a big-budget reimagining” of the character. It will star Christoph Waltz and Caleb Landry Jones, who starred in Besson’s Dogman, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
While little is actually known about Luc Besson’s Dracula movie, Deadline did report that it “has an origin story element to it exploring in a little more depth the gothic romance between Prince Vladimir and his wife whose loss turns him to forsake God and become a vampire.” It, too, is expected to have “some epic and potentially spectacular set pieces.”
The news comes out of the European Film Market, the trade fair held during the Berlin Film Festival. While Besson has never won Berlin’s top honor, the Golden Bear, his Dogman did make a splash at Venice, receiving a standing ovation despite the controversy surrounding his invitation.

Many people often blasphemously (and hilariously) joke around that Morgan Freeman is God. Not only because of his pitch perfect casting as God but also due to his smooth, defining and, yes, god-like is Morgan Freeman’s voice that one can’t picture penguins or parts of nature or, yes, God, without hearing the man. One reason could be that we’ve only ever really known Morgan Freeman as an older actor, not striking a chord with mainstream audiences until he was in his 50s.
Soon enough his skills, screen presences and voice had Hollywood calling every time they needed a kind wise grandfather types or a grizzled vet from either side of the the law or any type of narration in any type of film. That persona has marked him as a welcome figure throughout modern cinema – despite the nearly constant cash grabs that pad out the unfortunate bulk of his filmography.

Severin Films kicks off the new year with three North American premieres that bring “one of the best labels in physical media” (Polygon) into 2024 replete with classic monsters, barbed-wire garrotes, ‘80s Italo-Sleaze in Uhd and arguably the most depraved bedtime accessory ever created.
For January, Severin presents the ultimate version of Jess Franco’s 1972 mash-up Dracula, Prisoner Of Frankenstein; the rarely-seen Ozploitation slasher Bloodmoon, complete with infamous ‘Fright Break Challenge’; and Andrea Bianchi’s off-the-rails zombie carnage classic Burial Ground, now in eye-popping, flesh-ripping 4K.
To further celebrate everyone’s favorite shambling Etruscans, an all-new Burial Ground t-shirt and Michael Pillowcase will be available in two of this month’s bundles.

The death of the Dark Universe was painful for those who saw its potential but a boon for Universal's larger monster horror franchise. Three years after the studio's 2017 "Mummy" crashed and burned at the box office, "Saw" and "Insidious" creator Leigh Whannell delivers a bold new take on "The Invisible Man" that reinvented the classic property while also establishing an exciting director-driven approach for future Universal monster re-imaginings. Whannell will try and repeat that success later this year with his "Wolf Man" reboot, which (naturally) made /FIlm's most anticipated movies of 2024. Before that, though, it turns out we're getting a seemingly brand-new and perhaps even more intriguing Universal monster flick titled "Abigail."

When Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" first hit theaters, it was the summer between high school and the start of my undergraduate studies. I was a lifelong fan of all things Batman and reading as many books about film theory as I could get my hands on. Simply put, I was the perfect target to get swept up in the frenzy of what many were considering the best Batman film ever made. Knowing this was the second part of a trilogy, my fantasy booking of the inevitable third film went wild, and as my Facebook memories love to show me every year, I went home and updated my status to say, "Dear Christopher Nolan, Give Me Harley Quinn!" When fans started making viral mockups of Kristen Bell donning photoshopped harlequin makeup, I saved them all.

Welcome to the Hammer Factory. This month we dissect The Mummy’s Shroud (1967).
While Hammer Studios has been in business since 1934, it was between 1955 and 1979 that it towered as one of the premier sources of edgy, gothic horror. On top of ushering the famous monsters of Universal’s horror heyday back into the public eye, resurrecting the likes of Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy in vivid color, the studio invited performers like Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Ingrid Pitt and so many more to step into the genre limelight. Spanning a library housing over 300 films, Hammer Studios is a key part of horror history that until recently has been far too difficult to track down.
In late 2018, Shout Factory’s Scream Factory line began to focus on bringing Hammer’s titles to disc in the US, finally making many of the studio’s underseen gems available in packages that offered great visuals...

Here at Asian Movie Pulse, we have had a fantastic year of covering manga and manhwa (and a healthy dose of light novels) as we continue to expand our coverage of the medium. 2023 marked a remarkable year of new titles that deeply engrossed us in the pages throughout the year. The most significant change is coming from the heavier move towards publishing Manhwa titles, marking the first year we include South Korean comics as a major consideration for what made the past year so memorable.
Counting down to our favorite manga release of the year, these 20 titles highlight the best manga and manhwa releases of 2023.

“Scale, wing, vine, hair…none of that mattered to Lia, because her friends and mother loved her. She lived happily and peacefully—an almost worry-free existence. As the sole member of humania on the island, of course she dreamed about meeting others of her kind.

Ridley Scott's "Alien" is a science fiction masterpiece that mixes haunted house horror with the cold vastness of space, and it took a whole team of creatives to imagine the distinct future screenwriter Dan O'Bannon had envisioned. In his BFI Film Classics book "Alien," author Roger Luckhurst contrasts concept artists Ron Cobb and H.R. Giger, who each contributed to the look and feel of the film's dystopian, corporate-run version of the year 2122. While Cobb helped make the sterile corporate side of things feel appropriately grounded, Swiss biomechanical artist Giger designed the more out-of-this-world elements. It seems like Giger himself is rather out-of-this-world, too, as Luckhurst reveals a story from the movie's set where the artist simply decided, one day, that he needed bones. Lots of bones. Truckloads of bones.
If there was ever a movie where that kind of thing might be appropriate, it's probably "Alien." While some crew...

Horror Will Hold You Helpless!
Christopher Lee (The Wicker Man) gives one of his most unforgettable performances as Judge Jeffreys, the infamous 17th Century witchfinder whose unholy obsession with a luscious wench (Maria Rohm of Eugenie) fuels a jaw-dropping spree of torture, brutality and flesh-ripping perversion. Howard Vernon (Succubus), Margaret Lee (Five Golden Dragons), Maria Schell (99 Women) and Oscar® nominee Leo Genn (Quo Vadis) co-star in this landmark epic of sexual violence and sadism, complete with a superb score by Bruno Nicolai (Count Dracula) and directed with spectacularly deviant glee by the one and only Jess Franco (Venus In Furs).

How did you come to know our lord and savior, Count Orlok? If you're of a certain age, your first exposure might have come from the "SpongeBob SquarePants" episode "Graveyard Shift," in which the rascally vampire kept secretly flickering the lights during the night shift at the Krusty Krab. Or maybe you watched "Shadow of the Vampire," E. Elias Merhige's darkly comedic 2000 fictional account about the making of F.W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist classic "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." Or perhaps you even saw Murnau's unauthorized "Dracula" adaptation itself or Werner Herzog's 1979 remake "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (which did away with any pretenses and just referred to Orlok as Count Dracula).
Whatever the case, Orlok has sunk his fangs deep into our collective pop-cultural consciousness these last 100-plus years. With his pallid visage, sunken eyes, and bald head, he just stands out from all those other blood-suckers, straddling the...

The creature from Ridley Scott's 1979 horror sci-fi film "Alien" was inspired primarily by the 1976 painting "Necronomicon IV" by Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger. The subject of the painting rests in the middle of what appears to be a semi-metallic, semi-organic womb space of indeterminate function. The subject's lower half narrows and extends not into legs, but into an outsize phallus that stretches up over its head, searching for an organic aperture somewhere in its own cranium. The subject's ribs are visible. Its head, likewise, is decidedly phallic. On one end, it sports a monstrous face with fangs and large black eyes. The back end of its head tapers into something that is undoubtedly a glans. Intestinal tubes extend from the subject's back.
Like most of Giger's work, "Necronomicon IV" is nightmarish and unsettling. Giger worked in an aesthetic milieu that rested on a matrix where the organic and the mechanical,...

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

Whether you generally enjoy immersing yourself in bone-chilling experiences or usually steer clear of the horror genre, this time of the year just calls for something eerie. Your favorite spooky holiday is here, and chances are, you’re looking for a horror marathon to celebrate the day to the fullest. Now, binge-watching horror films or even a series of cult classics might not always cut it. There’s something about diving neck-deep into what’s terrorizing a bunch of characters in a show that really makes you a part of their bizarre world. You’ve got nothing to lose. And even if you come to care about the characters in a show and empathize with their plight, horror shows have a way of pinning you down to your couch and pulling you into a frightful narrative. There’s no easy way to point out why we obsess over this genre as much as we do.

When it comes to comics, superheroes are inexplicably linked to monsters. Horror comics existed before the superhero boom launched with Action Comics #1 (1938), and continued going strong after the caped crowd flopped following World War II. When Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee launched the Marvel Universe in the early 60s, they did so tentatively, keeping Spider-Man, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four close to the sci-fi and monster comics they made throughout the fifties.
As unlikely as the pairing may seem, superheroes and monsters make for a peanut butter and chocolate combination. Not only do monsters provide the overpowered villains required for superhero fights, as the current Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong demonstrates, but they also give characters like Spider-Man and Batman a chance to show off their heroism in the darkest of times.
So if you’re looking for some spooky superhero stories for your Halloween season, these 13 comics will do the trick.

We’re deep into Halloween season now, and one batch of movies I like to revisit around Halloween are the monster movie classics from Universal – as well as the non-Universal 1987 monster mash The Monster Squad. I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of horror fans. So, of course, October was the perfect time to announce that Universal Monsters: The Official Coloring Book will be reaching store shelves next year! It does have the random release date of July 16, 2024… but that just means we’ll have three months to secure our copies before Halloween season rolls around again. In fact, you can secure your copy right now by putting in a pre-order on Amazon.

In 1866, Gustave Courbet painted The Origin of the World, a portrait of a woman’s nude torso and exposed vagina that still possesses the capacity to shock the straitlaced. On one level, the painting proves pretty definitively that there’s a fine line between a timeless work of art and a beaver shot. On another, it provides a convenient precursor for the cinematic sensibility of Spanish maverick Jess Franco, who seemingly never met a pussy he didn’t want to zoom unabashedly in on. This holds especially true for Lorna the Exorcist, wherein the female genitalia play a significant thematic as well as aesthetic role.
For what it’s worth, the film bears only the slightest passing resemblance to the William Friedkin classic that it’s ostensibly ripping off. Both films focus on a character located on the cusp between childhood and womanhood (though here she’s a bit of...

How do you like to celebrate the arrival of October and true autumn? Perhaps you have a favorite sweater you like to pull out of the drawer; or maybe you’re a fiend for consuming pumpkin-spiced… everything! For ourselves, it’s always been about putting on that first horror movie (or three). While the whole year is a fine time to watch scary movies, there’s something especially crisp about a favorite chiller to match the cool evenings outside.
Spooky season has to start somewhere, and for us it might as well be with a film that either makes us shriek or smile. So if you’re looking for suggestions on how to best ease yourself into the reason for the season, these are the movies that we think make Halloween a wickedly fine time.

Folks don’t usually associate the horror genre with fighting games, but the popularity of fan-made creations like TerrorDrome and the success of horror-based licensed characters in titles like Mortal Kombat prove that there is a market for this kind of hybrid experience. In fact, at one point there was a popular series of games that capitalized on monster movie thrills when coming up with its roster of supernatural fighters in what can basically summed up as a goth rendition of Street Fighter.
Naturally, I’m referring to Capcom’s Darkstalkers (also known as Vampire in Japan), a collection of arcade fighting games that were all the rage back in the 90s but slowly faded into obscurity as the pubic became enamored with three-dimensional action. The following contains major spoilers for The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
If the horror genre has a grandfather, it’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. First published in 1897, the epistolary novel follows a group of English socialites who cross paths with a centuries-old vampire traversing the continent in search of fresh victims. From Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog to Stephen King and Mel Brooks, it seems nearly every horror creator has reimagined the legendary text. After more than two centuries and countless variations, you’d think there’d be nothing left on these literary bones.
Enter The Last Voyage of the Demeter: André Øvredal’s take on Stoker’s seventh chapter. A short, but pivotal episode in the vampire’s saga, this adaptation fleshes out the log of a doomed vessel and unearths an entirely new tale from the ashes of an old story.

Ahoy, dear readers! Prepare yourselves to embark on the not-so-smooth sailing through a tale you thought you knew. The Last Voyage of the Demeter (or Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter in international waters) sets a course for a supernatural journey that’s part sea shanty, part tragic opera, with a sprinkle of horror clichés in between.
“…part sea shanty, part tragic opera, with a sprinkle of horror clichés in between.”
Helmed by André Øvredal, this 2023 frightful cruise, penned by Bragi F. Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz, takes a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel “Dracula” and attempts to stretch it out into a two-hour voyage. Imagine taking a small yet flavorful appetizer and trying to make a five-course meal out of it. It’s ambitious, but can it sustain our horror-loving appetites?
We start at the end, washing ashore on 6th August in England, discovering a captain’s log amongst the wreckage.

There’s no denying that “Barbie” has been the big-screen blockbuster of the summer, and the Greta Gerwig-directed comedy is maintaining the top position at the box office in its fourth week of release.
Variety reports that “Barbie” is holding its momentum, adding an additional $33.7 million domestically this weekend for a domestic total of $526.3 million, with a worldwide gross of $1.18 billion.
“Oppenheimer” is likewise holding steady at second place, with a worldwide box office of $577 million.

The news was not so good for the weekend’s new arrival, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter”, which landed in fifth place.
Based on a chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the film — which follows the journey of an ocean vessel transporting the coffin of Count Dracula — could only scare up $6.5 million in its opening weekend.

I don't know about you, but I love me a Nosferatu. With their shiny bald heads, sinewy claws, and animalistic nature, they are the antithesis of everything Count Dracula. Gone are allure, seduction, and charm, instead replaced by gargoyle-like beings who only have one thing on their mind; your blood.
With inspiration dating back to 1922, these beastly beings have been cropping up in film and television every few years, when audiences seemingly get tired of the Count's debonair musings. And if you're like me, you'll find yourself fist-pumping every time a new Nosferatu is born.
Here are 13 Unforgettable Nosferatu-Style vampires to sink your teeth into.

Ah, the Og. Count Orlok is the original silent film star who didn't need words to make a chilling impression. Directed by F. W. Murnau, Nosferatu is a silent horror masterpiece that introduced audiences to the iconic Nosferatu style.
