“Val,” the warmly received and reveal documentary about actor Val Kilmer, began simply with an email. A decade ago, Leo Scott was working as an editor on director Harmony Korine’s half-hour comedy series for Vice Films ‘The Lotus Community Workshop.” Kilmer played a version of himself as a motivational speaker. “It was quite incredible what he did with that character,” said Scott during a recent Film Independent Zoom conversation on “Val.”
“I really, really wanted to tell him how good he was,” Scott noted. So, he sent a carefully crafted e-mail to the actor, who has starred in such films as 1984’s “Top Secret!,” 1996’s “Top Gun,” 1991’s “The Doors,” 1993’s “Tombstone” and 1995’s “Batman Forever.” Much to Scott’s surprise, Kilmer quickly sent him back an email. Soon, Scott found himself working with Kilmer on his one-man theater piece on Mark Twain.

With Val Kilmer and Joanne Whaley as parents, the acting bug was never too far from Mercedes Kilmer. Needless to say, no one was surprised when she decided to start an acting career of her own. She has been in the industry for about a decade, but she recently got her first major opportunity with the 2020 movie Paydirt where she got the chance to work alongside her father. Even though Mercedes has famous parents, she has worked hard to carve out her own path. She may not be as well known as her parents just yet, but Mercedes doesn’t

To celebrate the release of Paydirt, which is available now on DVD and digital, we sat down with one of the stars of the film, Mercedes Kilmer, to chat about the crime thriller.
In her feature-film debut, Kilmer features opposite her father Val for the first time and chatted to us about the experience of working with him as well her first experiences of being on a feature-film set as an actress for the first time. In the film, she plays Jamie who happens to be the daughter of local sheriff Tucker, played by her dad.
In addition, we chat about her love of theatre, her plans for her acting career from here, growing up with her parents – her mum is Joanne Whalley – and her love of Willow, the film her parents met on.
We also couldn’t not talk about her Dad being Batman and co-star Luke Goss’ famous band,...

Surely, it can’t be long before we see a new addition to “The Film Critic’s Lexicon,” in the chapter devoted to such shorthand similes as “feels like a Hallmark movie,” “resembles an after-school special” and that old standby, “Tarantinoesque.” Chances are very good there will be something on the order of “good enough for lockdown” or “quarantine time-killer,” used to describe the sort of unabashedly derivative and instantly disposable genre fare that might find an audience among undemanding genre enthusiasts in search of something new — anything new — to watch while homebound.
And when that label does indeed appear, don’t be surprised to see a production still from writer-director Christian Sesma’s “Paydirt” alongside it as illustration.
A thoroughly mediocre but sporadically diverting mashup of elements cribbed from the cinemas of Guy Ritchie, Steven Soderbergh and, yes, Quentin Tarantino, “Paydirt” is a crime drama with darkly comical touches...

"They say it's buried out there somewhere..." Dark Star Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for a crime action thriller titled Paydirt, the latest by filmmaker Christian Sesma. This hasn't shown anywhere else, and is debuting direct-to-vod in August. Val Kilmer stars as a retired Sheriff with an "obsession to right past wrongs" who goes after an ex-convict that is searching for a buried bag of cash stolen a decade ago from a DEA bust gone bad. Sounds like every other dusty crime thriller about a con looking for his money. Starring Luke Goss, with Mike Hatton, Paul Sloan, Nick Vallelonga, Mirtha Michelle, Veronika Bozeman, Murielle Telio, and introducing Mercedes Kilmer. This looks so excessively cliche and so painfully mediocre it's hard to even finish this trailer. But at least Val Kilmer is starring in something again. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Christian Sesma's Paydirt, direct from...
