Though the title Greenland: Migration might lead you to suspect that the sequel to 2020's Gerard Butler starrer is somehow crossing over with the recent animated duck film from Illumination, it's not the case. We'd still watch that, but this Migration promises to instead follow the drama as Butler's John Garrity and his family continue their struggle to survive an apocalyptic situation. The new film is about to start shooting.
You might recall that Greenland saw Butler and Morena Baccarin playing John and his estranged wife Allison as fragments from a comet start to batter the Earth, levelling cities and, in the case of one particularly large chunk, threatening an extinction-level event. Upon learning of a possible safe heaven (the title somewhat gives away the location), the family must make their way there.

Exclusive: In the biggest deal to go down at this year’s Cannes virtual market, STX has beaten out a number of rival bids for worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler action sequel Greenland: Migration.
STX is stumping up around $25 million for domestic rights in a deal cut with Euro producer-seller Anton and CAA Media Finance. Multiple streamers were in the hunt for the movie. STX will also take all of international from Anton in a pact that values foreign at around $50 million.
Anton took the project to the virtual market where it garnered significant interest from indie buyers, but — as often happens on successful franchise fare — STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and was happy to take the plunge. The movie will now run through the studio’s foreign output partners and is being sold to buyers in other markets.

Greenland (Ric Roman Waugh)
At first glance, Ric Roman Waugh’s Greenland appears to be a spiritual sequel to Geostorm. Also starring Gerard Butler, that 2017 film is a silly, diverting disaster-action epic. Greenland is decidedly more nuanced, cerebral, and, frankly, memorable. Butler plays John Garrity, a structural engineer determined to mend his fractured marriage. As he tries to make good with his wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) ahead of a neighborhood barbecue, reports of incoming debris from a nearby comet get more serious. John, unexpectedly, gets a “Presidential Alert” on his phone, informing him, his wife, and their son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) have been selected for government-sponsored shelter. It...

Gerard Butler does more than just punch his way out of imminent apocalypse in Ric Roman Waugh’s sharp action film
One of the genuine guilty pleasures of last year’s lockdown releases was Skyfire, a spectacularly silly Chinese disaster movie in which Jason Isaacs builds a hotel on the side of a volcano and then tries to reassure everyone (in a South African accent) that “we’re all going to be fine!” After watching Gerard Butler get into a fistfight with the weather in Geostorm, I had similar expectations of this end-of-the-world action film about an impending meteor strike. But though originally announced with Chris Evans as star and Neill Blomkamp of District 9 as director, Greenland turns out to be the perfect vehicle for Butler and director Ric Roman Waugh, reuniting after Angel Has Fallen for a sharply written and grippingly executed apocalypse pic that, like 2008’s breakout hit Cloverfield,...

There’s a reason this Gerard Butler action flick might be a game changer for the Scottish one man army. In Greenland, it’s true that he cracks heads, takes a beating and does rugged resilience better than some actors half his age. Where the erstwhile disaster movie turns left instead of a predictable right, however, is in its use of tone. Character beats, plot and structure might be quickly established, but it’s in the way things morph over a lean two hours that makes the difference.
A convincing Morena Baccarin plays Allison Garrity to Butler’s John in a role which on first impression feels one note. However, what director Ric Roman Waugh does is give Allison backbone, a resourceful streak and sass by the sack load. Once slated to arrive in theaters long before Covid-19 crash-landed in 2020 and upended the entire world, Greenland stars Gerard Butler as John Garrity, an Atlanta-based structural engineer who struggles to save his family as a planet-killing comet speeds toward Earth. Thanks to his skills, Garrity is one of many otherwise ordinary people who have been selected to hole up in massive underground bunkers in the country of Greenland, in the hope that he and others can emerge unscathed and begin rebuilding after the comet wipes the rest of civilization off the face of the globe.
The journey of Garrity, his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) and their diabetic son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) as they try to reach an Air Force base and catch one of those flights to Greenland is the driving force of the film. The human melodrama is front and center, with the havoc caused by chunks...

You can count the days on one hand now. Less than a week before the biggest holiday on the calendar, the one that brings families together. Yes, Christmas unites families as does imminent disaster (as the frequent lockdowns of the pandemic have proven). But what if we’re talking about mere hours, rather than these extended quarantine periods? Could you somehow set aside everything to fight the panicked throngs and get your loved ones to a place of somewhat uncertain safety? That’s the challenge facing the Garrity’s in this Earth-shaking (literally) new dramatic thriller. Perhaps their only chance of survival exists across the Atlantic in Greenland.
John Garrity (Gerard Butler) toils as a construction exec in Atlanta Ga. His ability to leave the site early rarely happens, but he’s hosting a big neighborhood BBQ/ watch party. But what are they watching? Is it a sporting event? No,...

Gerard Butler’s screen career of late has been all about saving presidents and warding off geostorms, but “Greenland” throws an extinction event in the actor’s path that’s so apocalyptic, the best he can do is try to get himself and his family to safety.
The fact that a rain of comets has no jaw for Butler to punch makes it one of his more engaging vehicles of late, particularly since director Ric Roman Waugh feels more at home making a disaster epic than he did with his previous collaboration with the actor, the ludicrous “Angel Has Fallen.” It’s a specific skill set to find individual stakes against a backdrop of mass destruction, but the filmmaker finds moments of humanity as the doomsday clock ticks down.

Most disaster movies are about going big. But “Greenland,” in which Gerard Butler runs around trying to save his family as a comet gets ready to hit the earth, is a movie that takes pains to make the end of life as we know it look like something that could actually happen. In its relatively small-scale, often rather plodding B-movie way, it wants to do for apocalypse thrillers what “Contagion” did for outbreak movies. And there are moments when it does.
The comet that’s heading toward Earth is actually a collection of rock fragments, and the TV news coverage of its impending arrival has the slightly bland quotidian steadiness you’d expect to hear from CNN. Early on, Butler, playing an Atlanta structural engineer — with a different actor he would have been an architect, but someone must have decided that was too wussy for Butler — named John Garrity, takes...

After the hellscape of a year that was 2020, it stands to reason that a disaster movie about a regular guy and his family trying to stay alive as the world goes to shit around them would feel redundant and/or too close to home. Either way, it seems like something that wouldn’t be worth paying for when you can get the real thing for free by looking at your window, turning on the TV, or — and this one is extra fun — just thinking about literally any single aspect of your life as it’s been since March.
And yet it’s precisely because Ric Roman Waugh’s mid-budget “Greenland” eschews Hollywood expectations of its “craggy man vs. a planet-destroying comet” premise and drills in on that human-sized helplessness we’ve all come to know so well that . The universe is a cold and indifferent place where inanimate objects will...
