It’s well known that in her decades-long career, Shonda Rhimes — the writer behind such television sensations as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “Bridgerton” — has smashed pervasive racist-casting tropes, and in doing so, changed the literal face of TV, whether that meant having “Scandal” revolve around Kerry Washington’s antihero Olivia Pope or elevating Regé-Jean Page to thirsty heights as a Black duke in Regency England on “Bridgerton.”
What’s talked about less is how Rhimes has changed the way people speak. Any parent of a teenager who’s heard the derisive usage of “pick me” from Meredith’s “Pick me! Choose me! Love me!” speech in Season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy” — used to describe, according to the Urban Dictionary, “a woman that is willing to do anything for male approval” — can tell you of Rhimes’ enduring power. Especially since that oratory was delivered in 2005, and given new life on TikTok.

Gladiators, suit up: The “Scandal” rewatch podcast, “Unpacking the Toolbox,” is set to return with new episodes on April 11.
“Unpacking the Toolbox” is hosted by former “Scandal” stars Katie Lowes (who played Quinn) and Guillermo Díaz (who played Huck) — their Irl friendship was forged on set, and fans nicknamed their twisted on-screen partnership Huckleberry Quinn.
Part of the iHeartPodcasts network, the Shondaland Audio series “Unpacking the Toolbox” — a reference to Huck’s torture kit — hit pause during the SAG-AFTRA strike, having covered the first two seasons of Shonda Rhimes’ ABC drama, which ran for seven seasons from 2012 through 2018.
“Scandal” revolved around Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope, a D.C. fixer who also happened to be having an affair with the very married President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). The series was a slow burn for ABC, ratings-wise, but midway through its second season, its delightfully batshit plotting and wild weekly cliffhangers caught on with audiences,...

Another week, another traumatic episode of a Shonda Rhimes show that centers around a vulnerable group.
On Station 19 Season 7 Episode 3, the firehouse fam attends a Pride parade to celebrate Seattle's LGBTQ+ community. For a full recap and review, check out TV Fanatic Jasmine Blu's expert take on True Colors!
During the Pride parade, a car backfires, the sound is mistaken for a gunshot, and chaos erupts. As painful as it is, this is an entirely predictable series of events because Shondaland loves to give marginalized communities a tragedy to rally around.
Don't get us wrong. We love this universe. Everything Shonda Rhimes touches turns to gold.
But we'd be remiss if we ignored the fact that sometimes it's hard to stomach some of the painful storylines vulnerable communities have to endure in the worlds she builds.
Looking back on the history of Shonda's television empire, it's clear that this isn't a new phenomenon.

“Law & Order” crossovers never fail to open up sweet opportunities where our favorite characters from different “Law & Order” universes get to meet and interact with each other. As a result of this, crossover episodes has become something that the long-running show’s dedicated fandom “L&o” occasionally yearn for. Well, “Law and Order’s” latest addition Tony Goldwyn wants this too.
Tony Goldwyn – Wants Kerry Washington To Guest Star On “Law & Order”
“Scandal’s” Tony Goldwyn recently joined “Law & Order” as District Attorney Nicholas Baxter after Sam Waterston’s Jack McCoy retired from the role.
So far, warming up to the detectives and adjusting to his new role, whilst harboring humongous ambitions, has been his character’s driving force. In real life, Goldwyn has his ambitions too.
You may remember Goldwyn as President Fitzgerald Grant from “Scandal” – yeah, the one who got entangled with Kerry Washington’s...

Taking over the prosecutor’s office for “Law & Order” in Season 23, the steely actor is set to debut District Attorney Nicholas Baxter on the revived legal drama Thursday, March 14 at 8 p.m. Et. The character introduction comes just two weeks after Sam Waterston stepped down as the legendary Jack McCoy. For his final appearance at NBC in Episode 4 “The Last Dance,” the iconic Da sacrificed his reelection campaign to fight corruption in the mayor’s office. Leaving his post after 30 years, McCoy assured his colleagues that the next Da would be an even stronger legal mind.
Replacing Waterston won’t be easy. The 83-year-old’s retirement from the series created a major vacancy in TV’s most famous police procedural. And that’s a genre already difficult to keep compelling in an increasingly divided America. “Law & Order” is still doing well in the ratings,...

Among all of the characters Kerry Washington has played over the course of her career, Olivia Pope ranks among her favorites. On Scandal, Pope was the lead character, a woman who headed up her own crisis management firm and became intertwined with many of Washington’s top politicians. Though she primarily served as the show’s protagonist, the character was known, at times, to go about her business in some morally- and ethically-challenged ways. And that’s one of the things Washington loved about her. We’ve spoken to her several times over the years, and she really appreciated the way Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes built Olivia Pope as a complex, three-dimensional character.(Click on the media bar below to hear Kerry Washington) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Kerry_Washington_Scandal_.mp3

Most of us can agree that TV shows thrive on their romantic storylines, but over the years love triangles have increasingly taken over TV’s romantic storylines and divided fans.
Iconic love triangles have become a commonly used trope to hook viewers in. There is nothing like declaring who the heroine should be with and having to stick with them through the rollercoaster of intense declarations of love and breakups. But despite how annoying and cliché love triangles can be, they lead to some of the best TV moments. So, naturally we decided to take a look at TV’s most infuriating love triangles.

Kerry Washington emphasized the importance of leveling the playing field during her acceptance speech for the Equity in Entertainment Award on Thursday at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment gala breakfast, presented by Lifetime.
Ariana DeBose presented the Scandal star with the award, which recognizes individuals who amplify the voices of underrepresented communities in the entertainment industry. The Oscar winner praised the Emmy winner for always being unapologetically herself and encouraging other women to do the same.
“Every component of the career that she has built, the empire that she has created, speaks to equity,” DeBose said of Washington. “How has she done that? By being herself and taking up space!”
The West Side Story star continued, “Kerry has squashed the traditional stereotype of being a Black woman in Hollywood. She has expanded our minds of what we can be — from playing the messy, complicated, dynamic Olivia Pope [in tt1837576 autoScandal...

The Olitz spark between "Scandal"'s Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn is still going strong years after their TV reign. The duo's recent reunion for Washington's "Thicker Than Water" book tour, which kicked off in September, reminded Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant fans everywhere that these haven't lost their magic one bit. In fact, their undeniable chemistry is just as convincing as it was during "Scandal"'s heyday. So much so that some fans have completely forgotten that the former costars are, indeed, married in real life (and not to each other).
Goldwyn has been with his wife, Jane Musky, since 1987, and they share two daughters. Washington, a mom of three young kids, meanwhile, tied the knot with NFL player-turned-actor Nnamdi Asomugha in 2013. So despite fan speculation, Washington and Goldwyn are just friends.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
Netflix has taken an odd approach to promoting Elite Season 7.
We've had random teasers on social media that haven't given much of the plot away,
Now, three days before its premiere date, we have a full-length promo that teases what's on the horizon.
Off the bat, I'm not interested in going back to Las Encinas.
Bringing Omar Ayuso back made me think that a change of scenery was on the menu.
Unfortunately, that isn't the case.
We see that Omar is still trying to piece together his thoughts about Samuel's death at the end of Elite Season 5.
New cast members for Elite Season 7 include Mirela Balic, Gleb Abrosimov, Nadia Al Saidi, Fernando Líndez, Alejandro Albarracín, Iván Mendes, and Maribel Verdú.
They join Elite Season 6 cast members Valentina Zenere, Andre Lamoglia, Carmen Arrufat, Alex Pastrana, Alvaro de Juana,...

Found Boss on Comparisons Between Gabi and Scandal’s Olivia Pope, Continuing Power Struggle With Sir
In NBC’s Found, airing Tuesdays at 10/9c, Gabi Mosely (played by Shanola Hampton) runs a crisis management team and does whatever it takes to find the missing individuals who’ve been otherwise forgotten — even if that means subverting the law.
For many viewers, she feels reminiscent of Scandal’s Olivia Pope, who also ran her own crisis firm and operated outside of the law to do what was necessary during the ABC drama’s run from 2012 to 2018.

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
Horror auteur Mike Flanagan is known for working with many of the same actors across his suite of spooky TV and film projects. Naturally, the writer/director’s latest for Netflix, the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired The Fall of the House of Usher, features quite a few familiar faces.
By our count, more than 20 actors from previous Flanagan projects also appear in Usher, including: Bruce Greenwood (Gerald’s Game), Samantha Sloyan, and Flanagan’s wife and long-time collaborator Kate Siegel. In addition to all the recurring players in Mike Flanagan’s acting troupe, however, there’s one Flana-newbie who outshines (pun intended) them all in The Fall of the House of Usher: Mark Hamill.

Back in January, Fox premiered Alert: Missing Persons Unit, a generic missing-person-of-the-week procedural with a ludicrous serialized plot grafted on top. It was inept and apparently successful enough to be renewed for a second season.
Like Alert: Missing Persons Unit, NBC’s new drama Found is a generic missing-person-of-the-week procedural with a ludicrous serialized plot grafted on top.
Both shows struggle to keep their weekly elements consistently interesting, and neither can figure out how to deliver exposition without having characters recite pieces of their biographies to other members of their crime-solving teams. And those serialized plots? So darned ludicrous.
Unlike Alert: Missing Persons Unit, however, Found is generally… Well, it isn’t good, but it has some underlying points that it wants to make about contemporary law enforcement, even if it rarely sticks with those points long enough to say anything persuasive. It has some characters who are complicated, despite the rampaging exposition.

It's been a long five years without Scandal in our lives, but we can always expect Kerry Washington to handle things for us.
Washington recently revisited the sudsy political thriller when she shared a video of a reunion with costar Tony Goldwyn.
If you watch Scandal online, you know Washington played D.C. fixer Olivia Pope, who was embroiled in an affair with Goldwyn's Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III.
Their ship's name was Olitz, and it was perfectly used in Washington's reunion with her former costar.
Washington walks down a hall before stopping at a door.
Behind it is Goldwyn, and when he opens it, they share a "Hi" with one other.
Also of note, the clip features "The Light" by the Album Leaf, which is their characters' song from the ABC series from Shonda Rhimes.

Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn are teaming up for an epic reunion!
On Wednesday (September 27), the Scandal stars recreated an iconic scene from their popular ABC political drama that aired from 2012 to 2018.
Kerry starred as Washington D.C. crisis manager Olivia Pope in the series, and Tony played the President of the United States, Fitzgerald Grant.
Keep reading to find out more and see the video…
In the video posted to Kerry‘s Instagram, the former costars re-enact their scene in the series finale where Olivia walks down a hallway to the song “The Light” by the Album Leaf and knocks on President Fitz’s door.
They simply say “hi” to each other in the closing scene. Presumably, that means they ended up together.
The 2023 version features Kerry walking down a hallway in a beautiful red ensemble before knocking on Tony‘s door and exchanging “hi”s with him. Then,...

By now, you’ve probably heard about the major plot point in Kerry Washington’s new memoir. If not: In 2018, her parents told her that her father is not her biological father; she is the result of her parents’ use of a sperm donor.
It’s the inciting incident for Thicker Than Water, and also for a new chapter of the actress’ life — one that she is still getting used to talking about. Washington doesn’t often name this family secret specifically in conversation, referring to it throughout a long interview as the “information” or “revelation” — it feels less like an aversion and more like a byproduct of the business of protecting a highly anticipated book. (If anyone knows how to gracefully avoid spoilers, it’s the woman who played Olivia Pope.) But Washington, who sat with THR over crudité in West Hollywood a couple weeks ahead of the book’s release,...

Thousands of union members braved a beating sun on Tuesday outside Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, as SAG-AFTRA brought out speakers including Kerry Washington, Martin Sheen and Ron Perlman as well as such labor leaders as Lindsay Dougherty, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and Joely Fisher as part of its National Day of Solidarity rally.
Burbank police officers, who closed off residential streets in the area, estimated Tuesday’s crowd to be between 1,500-2,000, but organizers SAG-AFTRA expected as many as 5,000 to attend the event, which served as a rallying cry for the Writers Guild of America and the performers union during their ongoing strikes as well as a show of solidarity with those — including the Teamsters and IATSE — whose contracts are up in 2024.

Activism has been a part of Kerry Washington’s life since she was a teenager, and the actress became a prominent political advocate during Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. But it wasn’t until the morning after the 2016 election, when Olivia Pope (the fictional crisis-management fixer Washington played on ABC’s Scandal) started trending in response to Donald Trump’s election to the presidency that she realized her potential for greater impact.

When Scandal wrapped its run in 2018, Shonda Rhimes was against the idea of revisiting the series.
However, it seems that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
During an interview with IMDb, Rhimes said that the character she wants to revisit is Olivia Pope.
"Olivia Pope, I like that character so much," Rhimes said.
"Even when she was bad, I liked that character so much -- she's very interesting."
Kerry Washington toplined Scandal for seven seasons on ABC.
If you watch Scandal online, you know the sudsy drama focused on a Washington D.C. fixer who finds herself wrapped up in the world of politics.
The series was well-known for its wild twists, romances, and stellar acting.
Loosely based on the real-life lawyer Judy Smith, who represented Monica Lewinsky during the Clinton scandal, Scandal started with middling ratings.
However, thanks to word-of-mouth, it became one of the biggest shows on TV.

Kerry Washington played antihero Olivia Pope across seven seasons of ABC‘s Scandal, and just because the political drama ended its run in 2018 doesn’t mean we won’t ever see the character again. In an interview with IMDb, the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes was asked which of her characters she’d like to revive for a current or future Shondaland show. Rhimes didn’t have to think twice about it, immediately answering, “Oh, Olivia Pope. I like that character so much, even when she was bad. I like that character so much; she’s very interesting.” Loosely based on the real-life lawyer Judy Smith, who represented Monica Lewinsky during the Clinton scandal, Pope was a crisis manager based in Washington, D.C., who ran her own firm, Olivia Pope & Associates, which specialized in fixing political situations and scandals. Washington played the adult version of the character, while Yara Shahidi...

Fresh off Charlie learning Emma's big secret, he decided to even the score and go all in with his beloved CIA agent in the closing seconds of The Company You Keep Season 1 Episode 5.
And all I have left to wonder now is where the story goes from here?
Much of the mystery and intrigue heading into The Company You Keep Season 1 centered around these two strangers meeting one another and not being entirely truthful. There was an intense physical attraction from the jump, but even more than that, they connected emotionally and felt truly seen by each other.
They fell hard and fast, and while it was scary and exhilarating a host of other feelings, it felt right for them, and they leaned into it more and more as the season went on.
But things certainly changed for Charlie...

As a performer, Kerry Washington is particularly adept at conveying uptightness — her crispness of bearing and her rat-a-tat delivery suggest a certain passion for organization, for rigor. This was the ingredient that helped elevate “Scandal,” and the emotionally chaotic but professionally fastidious character of Olivia Pope. Now, on the Hulu sitcom “UnPrisoned,” Washington’s back to the angle that suits her best — and at the heart of a sweetly intended show of disarming quality.
Here, Washington plays Paige, a relationship therapist whom viewers may not be shocked to learn hasn’t quite got herself figured out. Her tendency to dispense advice about fixing romantic partnerships rubs up against the fact that she makes poor choices. We learn, gradually, about the role model she’s emulating in her own way: Her father, Edwin, newly released from prison, is at once astoundingly charismatic and someone with an entangled personal life. “I’ve got one daughter, and you’ve got one daddy,” Edwin (Delroy Lindo) reminds his daughter Paige (Kerry Washington) in the trailer for the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned.” Their relationship is at the heart of the comedy, in which they reunite after Edwin spent 17 years in prison on drug charges. Ray Donovan made history when it premiered in 2013. In a market saturated with crime dramas, the Ray Donovan cast was so good it surpassed expectations and flew past the mark. Ray Donovan is a fixer – and you know the term from watching Olivia Pope in Scandal work as a fixer. The difference is that while Olivia Pope fixed political issues for politicians to help them find their way into office, Ray Donovan works with celebrity clients. And he works with them to cover up their crimes. The show is fantastic, but we must give credit where credit is

If all goes according to plan, Netflix’s latest YA adaptation could continue happily ever after for years to come.
Based on the first book in Soman Chainani’s six-part series, The School For Good and Evil follows two best friends — Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) — who are whisked away to the titular institution where fairy tale heroes and villains are made. The catch? Whereas Agatha lands comfortably in the School for Good, Sophie is “mistakenly” dropped into the School for Evil.

Get ready to make Hulu's "Reasonable Doubt" your new favorite legal drama. The courtroom series - created, written, and executive produced by "Scandal" alum Raamla Mohamed - has introduced the newest high-powered attorney on the TV block, and her name is Jacqueline "Jax" Stewart (portrayed by Emayatzy Corinealdi). "Reasonable Doubt" comes with an all-star cast that features Michael Ealy, McKinley Freeman, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Pauletta Washington and a stacked production team with executive producers like Kerry Washington and Larry Wilmore.
"The biggest piece of advice that Kerry gave me was to make sure I took my vitamins at the start of the show."
It's been a while since we've seen a Black woman protagonist lead a mainstream legal drama. Most memorably, Viola Davis's Annalise Keating in "How to Get Away With Murder" helped pave the way for others like her. But others like Washington's Olivia Pope from...

“Reasonable Doubt” has a healthy amount of “Scandal” in its DNA.
The series was created by former “Scandal” writer and producer Raamla Mohamed; Kerry Washington directs the first episode. And the swirling intrigue around a self-styled do-gooder protagonist — who’s unconventional in her methods, and irresistibly drawn to drama — will recall Olivia Pope, the character Washington played on the ABC drama. Back then, Olivia unwound with a glass of red wine; as if to flex the looser, loucher possibilities of streaming, Emayatzy Corinealdi’s Jax Stewart ends her day with a cigarette.
That seems an apt distillation of a series that’s charged with a nervy energy; “Reasonable Doubt” places Corinealdi’s very flawed protagonist at its center and watches as she generates smoke, and steam. Jax is a former public defender who now works in high-profile criminal defense in Los Angeles; her attention is divided between her caseload and...

“Good Trouble” star Zuri Adele remembers how she felt watching Kerry Washington grace the small screen as Olivia Pope in “Scandal.”
“[It] changed my life to see a Black woman leading like that on television,” she told TheWrap during a recent interview. “I think the shows that impacted me the most were like the ensemble shows, particularly with Black people at the forefront, normalizing my experience rather than trying to fit myself into another experience.”
Adele was joined by several of her co-stars from the Freeform series for a chat with TheWrap ahead of the Season 4B premiere, including Tommy Martinez, Priscilla Quintana, Sherry Cola, Emma Hunton, Josh Pence and Cierra Ramirez. They agreed that, growing up, they were hard pressed to find characters on screen who they could look up to — a problem they’re trying to solve for future generations.
