Sandalwood Neo-noir films usually have a cynical attitude and revolve around crimeSanjana DeshpandeRooted in the German Expressionist Movement, the style film noir emerged in the United States against the backdrop of the Great Depression which lasted from 1929 to 1933. The noir films usually had a cynical attitude and presented stories of crime. The films were largely associated with the black-and-white visual style and had low-key lighting. Neo-noir was an attempt at revival of the noir. Although the two genres are stylistically the same—replete with low-key lighting, unbalanced framing, Dutch angle, blurry boundaries between good and bad— a distinct feature sets them apart. Neo-noir was rooted more in the French New Wave which emerged in the 1950s. Quite a few Indian films have been made in neo-noir style, and the Kannada film industry too is trying to push boundaries with the genre. Here’s a list of five Sandalwood neo-noir films...

ReviewConsisting of seven short films, Rishab Shetty’s movie doesn’t give enough space for viewers to absorb characters as it moves quickly from one to the next.Aravind ShwethaYouTube screenshotImagine watching seven short films, each 20-odd minutes long, at a stretch – some good, some bad, and some average. That’s Rishab Shetty’s Katha Sangama for you. Sandalwood has had its fair share of anthology films in recent times – Dayavittu Gamanisi, Kahi and now Katha Sangama. TollywoodThe screenplay offers no insights, no character analysis and no empathy even for the main characters, and the film looks to ride on a wave of controversy.Krishna SripadaHitchcock is once famously known to have said that the length of a movie should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder. Sadly, Hitchcock didn’t take into account the dynamics of a typical Rgv movie off-late where, leave alone a human bladder, you want to find whatever excuse you can to leave the hall. Lakshmi’s Ntr can be dissected, like all supposed biopics, on two counts – for the sincerity of the story and for the quality of the movie itself. On the former, the movie can be accused of taking an extremely one-sided opinion, but since no one really knows the truth barring the lady it alludes to, we can put that discussion aside. On the latter,...
