MollywoodThis film would have made sense if the genre had been sci-fi and there was a scientific explanation for why all the middle-aged adults behave like pimply teenagers.Sowmya RajendranMarconi Mathai, directed by Sanil Kalathil, would have been a cute film if the protagonists had been giggly 15-year-olds in the 1940s who are discovering love for the first time. The shy hero who does not know how to profess his love to the wide-eyed, innocent heroine. The naughty friends who encourage him to express his feelings and rag him as he blushes and blunders through his emotions. The shy hero doing silly things to win the heroine's attention. Ah, those remarkable black-and-white high school days! But unfortunately, Marconi Mathai is not about pimply teenagers; it is a film about fully grown, middle-aged adults in the year 2019. To be clear, the genre is not science fiction. There is no explanation for...

The film released in Tamil on January 10 and has already grossed over Rs 155 crore worldwide. Ram Charan’s Vinaya Vidheya Rama, Venkatesh and Varun Tej’s F2 and the first part of the Ntr biopic, Ntr Kathanayakudu, were confirmed Sankranthi releases and hence the chances of Viswasam faring well at the box-office were slim. KollywoodIndia’s first space film looks convincing but is in desperate need of good writing. Sowmya RajendranDirector Shakti Soundar Rajan’s Tik Tik Tik is one of those ambitious projects that you desperately want to like. It’s India’s first space film, after all. As Appu (Arjunan) tells us, everyone remembers who the first man on the moon was, not so much the second and the third. Being first, venturing into something new for the industry has a certain value, and full marks to Tik Tik Tik for trying. Tik Tik Tik is definitely not a Hollywood film. For one, Hollywood is obsessed with saving the world. Shakti Soundar Rajan is modest – his characters just want to save a part of India. But one wishes that this director, who seems to have a real thirst to take Tamil cinema to vera level, would get a writer on board. Someone who can flesh out the characters and write a proper script. At a taut runtime of just over two hours, Tik Tik Tik starts with the problem – a giant asteroid is about to destroy Tamil Nadu and kill over 4 crore people. Who can stop it? The answer, it turns out, is not the scientists or even highly trained military personnel – it’s a Robin Hood-type magician, Vasu (Jayam Ravi), who does his good Samaritan work through a hacker (Arjunan) and a contortionist-helper (Ramesh Thilak). They are the team the army chief (an out-of-sorts Jayaprakash) trusts to prevent this minor apocalypse. Even if physicists around the world are in danger of suffering a seizure at the idea, the audience could have still warmed up to it, if only the screenplay had more on offer. Take the introduction scene for Vasu – after we’re elaborately told about how he landed in prison and what a genius of a magician he is, we see him doing… card tricks and the same ‘magic’ handcuff switches we’re already expecting him to do. This lack of imagination plagues the film throughout. Nivetha Pethuraj plays Swathi, a Lieutenant – but even as she’s training the team, Shakti Soundar Rajan can’t resist putting her in a swimsuit and having the men ogle her. And of course, because she is a woman, Vasu has to chivalrously come to her rescue when the villain targets her. Lieutenant, be damned. It’s heartening, however, that the director thought of including some women in the team of scientists although they do little but gasp. And yay, there’s no cheesy love duet in space. Jayam Ravi’s real life son, Aarav, plays his kid in the film, too. Their relationship and what happens to the son is an important plot point but the director barely invests any time in building their bond on screen. We’re shown real life photos of the father-son and this is supposedly enough to convince the audience about the love between them. Such laziness in scripting costs the film dearly as we just don’t get involved enough with any of the characters. It’s the sets, cinematography and VFX work that really carry Tik Tik Tik through. Given that the budget is nowhere close to Hollywood flicks, the visual effects are impressive and convince us that this unlikely bunch actually is in space. Even if we don’t care about the characters crying, it’s fun to see their tears floating up – how better a film this would have been if the attention to detail had also been extended to the storytelling! D Imman’s Tik Tik Tik in the background score is quite addictive even if the screenplay doesn’t really keep us on tenterhooks about the ticking hands of the clock. The comedy inserted into the script floats around like an object in zero gravity, not landing anywhere and just getting in the way. Aaron Aziz plays a Chinese (the name of the country is beeped out but it’s an easy guess to make) villain who is entrusted with the unenviable task of shouting praise at the Indian hero – “You Indians! You have an astronaut who fights!” he yells in disbelief. I was tempted to take him aside and say, “Actually, that’s a magician who is a Robin Hood, who is now an astronaut, and he is fighting!” Imagine how blown he’d have been. Tik Tik Tik feels like a missed opportunity. It’s neither a proper ‘masala’ film, nor a sophisticated thriller – but despite the fact that it never really takes off, it deserves a consolation prize for trying. Here’s hoping Shakti Soundar Rajan gets some specialists on board the next time and doesn’t attempt to be the magician-director-writer. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew. KollywoodThis effort at black comedy is saved by its surprising second half.Sowmya RajendranArumuga Kumar's Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren is an unusual choice for a directorial debut. The black comedy (with most of the characters dressed in black) begins with a voiceover (Vijay Sethupathi) taking us through the vastness of the universe and establishing just where the story is about to unfold - a little village in Andhra Pradesh called Yama Singapuram. The director thus begins by emphasising the littleness of human life and deeds, which sets the tone for the subversion of the usual tropes of Tamil cinema. But, it takes a while for Arumuga Kumar to establish where he's going with the film, and for a good part, we're left wondering if there's a point to this bizarre drama. Vijay Sethupathi plays Yaman, the leader of a tribe that 'honourably' robs people for a living. He has two sidekicks, Purushotaman and Narasimhan (Ramesh Thilak and Rajkumar) who accompany him on his adventures. Yaman's life intersects with that of three college students - Sowmya (Niharika Konidela), Harish (Gautham Karthik), and Sathish (Daniel Annie Pope) - and well, the rest of it plays out. Vijay Sethupathi, despite his head accessories and outlandish costume, underplays his role as usual. He's funny whether he says "Yei chi po" or walks around with strange wigs. He will probably manage to be entertaining even if he's just staring at the walls, so this is no surprise. But Arumuga Kumar uses him more like a talented contestant in a fancy dress competition than a character in his film. Nevertheless, it's great to see him and Gayathrie Shankar, who played the bride in the howlarious Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, share the same frame again. The plot perhaps looked funnier on paper than when translated to the screen. The problem is that nearly every character in the film is over-the-top, and they speak in the same way - screaming through their dialogues. It looks too deliberate to be funny. Gautham Karthik's Harish is pretty annoying in the first half - he's written as an impish, annoying cool dude who is...did I say annoying already? But he improves considerably in the second half - maybe because he doesn't wear his shades as much - eliciting some laughs. Yaman calls him 'loosu payyan' and that struck me as an accurate description - he's the male version of the 'loosu ponnu' heroine we usually see on the screen. To its credit, Onnps is one of those rare Tamil films where a woman's “no” actually means something. The film takes a familiar trajectory on consent, trying to manipulate the characters on screen and the audience into believing that a good man's relentless ‘love’ is enough to override a woman's “no”, but takes a surprising and welcome turn. Vs is probably the only ‘mass’ hero today who'd be willing to risk his ‘manliness’ by doing such scenes. The women characters in the film, who strike you as horrendously silly in the first half, get some dignity in the second half. The film, in fact, saves itself because of the last 40 minutes or so where Arumuga Kumar whips up mega serial-level melodrama but punctures it casually. Thanks to Niharika and the fact that much of the film is set in Andhra, we get references to Telugu stars and films - how much of that the Tamil audience will get is anyone's guess. Justin Prabhakaran's music is over-the-top, just like the visuals are. Onnps is an attempt to do something fresh and original in a crowded space with star vehicles and horror comedies dominating the market. It's a decent debut, but the film needed some more thought to bring it all together. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

However, he has denied reports that the project is a remake of the Akshay Kumar starrer Baby, which also starred Rana Daggubati, Anupam Kher and Taapsee Pannu. Talking to the Times of India, Ahmed said: “Not at all. My film with Ravi will be based on an original script. I’m currently working on the script and we will start shooting once it is firmed up.” Apparently, the project was supposed to go on the floors last September but had to be postponed due to Sanghamitra. If Sundar C’s magnum opus Sanghamitra doesn’t go on the floors by April, Ahmed hopes to commence work on his project with Ravi, who is currently awaiting the release of Tik Tik Tik, tipped to be India’s first space film. Having predominantly made his mark starring in remakes of major Telugu films, Ravi has made smart career choices in the last couple of years. It should be noted that Thani Oruvan, which was directed by his brother, was a major game changer in his career. Since then, he’s taken a conscious effort to do something offbeat in terms of his script selection. At the audio launch of Tik Tik Tik in Chennai earlier this month, Ravi said nobody believed him when he said he was going to star in a space film. He said he was happy that he proved everyone wrong and that he was eagerly looking forward to the release of Tik Tik Tik. The film also stars Nivetha Pethuraj and Ramesh Thilak while Singapore actor Aaron Aziz will be seen as the main antagonist. Tik Tik Tik also marks the acting debut of Jayam Ravi’s son Aarav, who plays Ravi’s reel son. The makers of Tik Tik Tik had initially announced that the movie would hit the screens on January 26, but just two days before the release they confirmed that the movie’s release date has been postponed. Industry grapevine is that the film is being postponed due to financial reasons. Ravi has also confirmed in a few recent media interactions that he will reunite with his brother for his 25th film.
