British historian David Starkey made an appearance on a pre-Coronation broadcast on Gb News Thursday, where he claimed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not sufficiently “grounded” in British culture.
The disgraced historian made the claim after host Andrew Pierce appeared to suggest that Coronation efforts from the British government have been muted.
“The prime minister now has been, in my mind, detached or at least semi-detached, from this Coronation,” Pierce said.
In response, Starkey said: “I think one of the reasons that I think a lot has gone wrong, for example, why parliament has not been properly represented at the coronation of a parliamentary monarchy, is because the government isn’t interested in the constitution.”
Starkey continued to say that what he was claiming was a “difficult and controversial” topic, but he believes it is true, after adding: “The prime minister, the man of immense power, of extraordinary skill, but really,...

Trevor Noah’s days as host of The Daily Show are coming to an end but he still knows how to cause a stir.
Earlier this week, The Daily Show’s Twitter posted a video in which Noah claimed there had been a “backlash” against new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who became the UK’s first leader of Asian descent and Hindu faith earlier this week.
This led to former Tory Chancellor and Health Secretary Sajid Javid reposting the video and writing: “Simply wrong. A narrative catered to his audience, at a cost of being completely detached from reality. Britain is the most successful multiracial democracy on earth and proud of this historic achievement.”
In Noah’s video, titled ‘Unpacking the backlash against new UK Pm Rishi Sunak,’ he said: “Watching the story of Rishi Sunak becoming England’s first Prime Minister of colour, of Indian descent, of all...

Hugh Grant has resurfaced his reaction to the Conservative party win in the 2019 general election.
The actor tweeted minutes after the Exit Poll data was released, which showed a landslide majority for Boris Johnson.
“There goes the neighbourhood,” he wrote on 12 December 2019, issuing a warning of the impact he believed Johnson’s leadership would have on the UK.
On Wednesday (12 October), Grant, 62, reshared his three-year-old tweet with an emoji of a finger pointing to it seemingly in emphasis.
The Love Actually star has long been a vocal critic of the Tory government.
In May this year, Grant criticised cabinet members for supporting then-prime minister Johnson after Sue Gray’s report revealed drunkenness, vomiting and damage at the illegal events and the abuse of cleaners who objected.
Responding to a tweet that collated screenshots of support for Johnson from Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, and Sajid Javid, Grant quipped that the replies...

Updated 03:20 Am Pt: The race to replace Boris Johnson has begun in earnest and ITV News and Sky News will now both host debates in the coming days, with the BBC expected to follow suit.
Eleven Conservative candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to be the next UK Prime Minister, following Johnson’s bitter sort-of-resignation last week, but by the time the Sky debate takes place on Monday 18 July that number will likely have been whittled down to around four.
Candidates will need to have enough nominations from fellow MPs later this week in order to get through to the final four and, once down to two, the Conservative membership base will make the final decision, with more debates expected over the summer.
The BBC is shortly expected to unveil its plans while Channel 4 is yet to confirm whether it will host a debate. Last time there was a General Election,...

Afternoon Insiders. A week is a long time in TV and film, and it’s also a long time in politics. Max Goldbart here and we’ve got you covered on all three. Read on.
Bye Bye Boris
All over in 36 hours: Few in Britain’s London politics bubble would have predicted that the scandal to bring down Pm Boris Johnson would involve a little known Deputy Chief Whip called Chris Pincher, but that is exactly what transpired this week. Within a colossal 36 hours that rocked the UK political landscape, Johnson went from feeling vaguely safe after an almost-year-long-stretch of scandals to resigning in disgrace on the steps of his 10 Downing Street home. At times it was almost impossible to keep up (although the BBC and Sky coverage did a fantastic job), as minister after minister resigned in protest at Johnson’s handling of the Pincher scandal and a more general feeling of disarray,...

This has been the weirdest week in British television in a long time.
In the days leading up to Boris Johnson’s resignation, the number of gaffes and surreal moments captured on live television became almost impossible to track. But in many ways, these moments reflected the surreal mood of the country as the prime minister refused to step down, despite more than 50 government resignations.
Take the political coverage from College Green, a public park in Westminster and a popular location for interviews with politicians. On Wednesday, the day after Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak sensationally resigned from their posts, ITV’s Susanna Reid and former Labour chancellor Ed Balls were interrupted on “Good Morning Britain” by the anti-Brexit campaigner Steve Bray singing a karaoke version of the Bay City Rollers, replacing the words “Bye Bye Baby” with “Bye Bye Boris.”

Boris Johnson has confirmed he is leaving No.10 today.
The under-fire Pm has finally agreed to end his Premiership after days of facing mass cabinet resignations.
Speaking on the steps of Downing Street, he thanked the British people for their support and said he will continue with the job until the autumn while a leadership contest takes place in the coming months.
But it’s worth noting that the last leadership contest took two months, and Johnson will visit the Queen at the end of the process to tell her he is standing down.

Boris Johnson has resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom. The British leader was ousted from the post after more than 50 members of his Conservative government resigned this week.
The resignation comes only weeks after the Prime Minister survived a confidence vote by Tory MPs after winning the support of 211 MPs.
“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party and so a new prime minister,” Johnson confirmed in a speech at London’s 10 Downing Street today.

Exhibitor Cineworld has pulled all screenings in the UK of The Lady Of Heaven, a film about the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad which sparked protests at some theaters. A Cineworld statement said, “Due to recent incidents related to screenings of The Lady Of Heaven, we have made the decision to cancel upcoming screenings of the film nationwide to ensure the safety of our staff and customers.”
Deadline understands that the film was playing in nine Cineworld locations, and in two of those, protests became aggressive with verbal attacks against managers. Executive producer Malik Shlibak told the BBC the protesters were behaving like “thugs and bullies,” rushing into cinemas and intimidating staff, though he warned canceled screenings could fuel similar protests in the future. “This is not something that should be tolerated in the UK… This is more than just a single film. Local cases of the Omicron variant of Covid officially doubled today, as Los Angeles County announced eight additional infections of the virus mutation, while Pasadena health officials verified that city’s first case.
The new cases confirmed by the county Department of Public Health brought the number of Omicron cases in that agency’s jurisdiction to 15. Less than a week ago on December 8, Los Angeles had identified just 4 cases. The first case of the new variant was discovered in L.A. on December 1.
In Britain, where the first known cases date to November 27, officials have warned of a “tidal wave” of infections associated with the variant, the number of which have been doubling every two days, they say.

One day after the United States recorded its 5 millionth case of Covid-19, the Johns Hopkins University count of virus-related deaths in the country topped 800,000. That’s larger than the population of Seattle, Detroit or Denver, according to census data.
On October 1 of this year, the nation crossed the 700,000 deaths threshold. That means America experienced 100,000 Covid-related deaths in the past two-and-a-half months. The more virulent Delta Variant is responsible for nearly all of those deaths.
The news comes as the more transmissible Omicron variant is increasing its foothold across the globe. It has thus far been identified in 77 countries and 33 states, according to CDC Director Rochelle Walinsky today.
The variant now accounts for at about 3% of the genomically-tested samples across the nation, said Walinsky. That number rises to 13% in New York & New Jersey, per new data out of the CDC today. The first case in the U.S. has been traced...

Warner Bros. has postponed the scheduled 2022 U.K. and Ireland theatrical release of “Operation Mincemeat,” starring Colin Firth, from Jan. 7 to April 22, Variety has confirmed.
While there appears to be no specific reason for the delay, it could be due to the alarming spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The U.K. Health Security Agency estimates there are 4,713 confirmed Omicron cases, with a current 200,000 Covid infections a day. The U.K. Health Secretary Sajid Javid revealed the estimate in the House of Commons on Monday.
A WWII drama by “Shakespeare in Love” director John Madden, “Operation Mincemeat” is the film adaptation of Ben McIntyre’s novel, adapted by screenwriter Michelle Ashford. It tells the true story of an Allied mission in Northern Italy, when British forces successfully disguised the body of a recently deceased homeless man as a Royal Marine officer and placed falsified documents on the corpse.

Health Minister Sajid Javid confirmed Sunday to the BBC that England will not go forward with plans to require proof of vaccination in nightclubs and other spaces.
“What I can say is that we’ve looked at it properly, and while we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, I’m pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans for vaccine passports,” Javid told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.
The England proposal would have required a proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid-19 test for attending crowded events.
The move by England comes as US cities and school districts are increasingly installing mandates on vaccination status. The Los Angeles school district has imposed a student vaccine mandate, and New York already requires its restaurants and bars to verify vaccine status. All are polarizing the affected, with legal challenges mounting.

Production on season 2 of Sky and AMC’s crime drama series “Gangs of London” has been paused after a crew member tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.
The crew member tested positive during regular production testing, Variety understands. Production will pause for the appropriate isolation period — 10 days — in line with the latest U.K. government advice. As standard protocol, the production tests cast and close-contact crew twice weekly.
Sky has a set of protocols in place, including separate bubbles and close contact groups, that have been applied successfully across a number of productions both at Sky and across the industry. Because these protocols were in place, only those working inside this close contact group, have been sent home to isolate as a precaution.
“Throughout this time, the safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority,” a spokesperson for Sky told Variety. “‘Gangs of London’ S2 production has...

David Lowery’s “The Green Knight,” starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton, has been pulled from its scheduled Aug. 6 theatrical release in the U.K. at the last minute.
The A24 and Bron Studios film by writer-director David Lowery (“A Ghost Story”) was due to be released by Entertainment Film Distributors. The decision was the distributor’s and was prompted by the rising wave of Covid-19 cases in the U.K., Variety has confirmed.
The film’s simultaneous U.S. release on Aug. 6 is not believed to be affected.
Variety reached out to Entertainment Film Distributors for comment, but did not hear back by press time. It’s still unclear if and when the film might be rescheduled.
“The Green Knight” is a fantasy re-telling of the Arthurian medieval story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

HBO has paused shooting on its “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” because of a positive Covid-19 case on set, Variety has confirmed.
As part of testing implemented for all production employees, a production member on the series tested positive for Covid-19. In compliance with industry guidelines, the production member is in isolation, and close contacts will be required to quarantine. Production will resume on Wednesday after a two-day pause.
This is the third Covid-affected shoot in the U.K. in the last few days. Netflix’s “Bridgerton” paused shooting after a positive case, resumed, and paused again after another case. The streamer’s “Matilda” has also paused for the same reason. London’s Riverside Studios has canceled its revival of Terence Rattigan’s play “The Browning Version,” starring Kenneth Branagh, because of the Covid-enforced absence of cast members during rehearsals.

Exclusive: Netflix has partially shuttered production on feature Matilda amid a coronavirus outbreak, making it the streamer’s second UK shoot in as many days to be disrupted by the pandemic after we first told you that Bridgerton was paused on Saturday.
Deadline can reveal that the first filming unit on Working Title’s Matilda had to down tools yesterday following a positive Covid test. A source said the hiatus could last as long as 10 days. The second unit continues shooting.

Theaters and cinemas in the U.K. are rejoicing as the British government confirmed it is going ahead with plans to drop all social distancing measures from July 19, nicknamed “Freedom Day.”
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said today almost all pandemic-induced legal restrictions will be removed although he recommended that people continue to wear masks indoors.
The government also indicated yet another U-turn on vaccine passports, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying venues would be “urged” to implement vaccine status checks as a condition of entry.
“As a matter of social responsibility we’re urging nightclubs and other venues with large crowds to make use of the NHS Covid pass, which shows proof of vaccination, a recent negative test or natural immunity as a means of entry,” Johnson said during a press conference.
With a week to go until “Freedom Day,” however, it’s questionable how quickly events organizers will be...

He told Es Magazine: “I recognised him and put my hand out and said, ‘Lovely to meet you’, and you know what he does? He refuses to shake my hand.

A war of words has developed between Hugh Grant and UK politician Sajid Javid over a handshake snub.
In an interview with Es Magazine published today, Javid, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, claimed that Grant had refused to shake his hand when the two met at the recent London premiere of Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.
In the story, Javid calls the actor “incredibly rude” and claims Grant is part of an “elite” who “look down on working class people no matter what station they reach in life.”
Florence Foster Jenkins actor Grant hit back on his Twitter account this morning with his own version of events, publishing a series of quotes that came via a spokesperson. (See the tweets below.) His posts stated that the altercation was over Javid’s treatment of the victims of phone-hacking, which he cited as “borderline contemptuous.”

BBC director general Tony Hall has stepped in to reverse the company’s decision to reprimand a presenter over comments she made about Donald Trump following a five-day-long backlash against the UK broadcaster.
In a move the BBC hopes will calm a story that has been raging in the British press, Hall said he personally reviewed the complaint about BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty and found there was no case to answer.
In an email to staff late Monday in London, Hall said: “In this instance, I don’t think Naga’s words were sufficient to merit a partial uphold of the complaint around the comments she made.
“There was never any sanction against Naga and I hope this step makes that absolutely clear. She is an exceptional journalist and presenter and I am proud that she works for the BBC.”

The BBC has become embroiled in a huge row after it censured a presenter for comments she made about Donald Trump on one of the corporation’s flagship shows.
During a July broadcast of BBC Breakfast, host Naga Munchetty took issue with a now-infamous Trump tweet, in which he called on congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib to “go back to the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
Following a discussion of the president’s remark, Munchetty said: “Every time I have been told, as a woman of color, to go back to where I came from, that was embedded in racism.”
Asked by co-host Dan Walker how it made her feel, she added: “Absolutely furious and I can imagine lots of people in this country will be feeling absolutely furious a man in that position thinks it’s Ok to skirt...

Deals for two of the UK’s most prized assets are welcome but also prompt questions over sustainability and the indigenous industry.
It was a sign of the times.
News of the deal to sell iconic UK film studio Pinewood to a property fund run by asset management firm Aermont - an offshoot of Perella Weinberg’s Us private equity business which split from its parent company last year - came on the same day that French energy firm Edf – aided by Chinese backers – was attempting to tie up a deal to build the first nuclear power plant in the country in 20 years.
Hinkley Point would provide an estimated 7% of the UK’s electricity.
While some welcomed employment opportunities offered by the nuclear project, others questioned its exorbitant cost and wondered why the UK needed to outsource such a colossal undertaking to a French company and the Chinese government.

John Whittingdale has lost his job as culture secretary.
John Whittingdale has lost his job as culture secretary after 14 months in the post.
The MP for Maldon tweeted his 6,600 followers that it had been a “privilege to serve as culture secretary” as it emerged he had been left out of new prime minister Theresa May’s first cabinet.
He added: “I wish my successor every success and will continue to support creative industries.”
Whittingdale took over as culture secretary in 2015 from business secretary Sajid Javid.
His departure is likely to be celebrated at Horseferry Road after the minister launched a review into the future of Channel 4’s ownership model and appeared to be in favour of privatising the public service broadcaster. In an interview with The Sunday Times in March he claimed C4 was “restrained by not being privatised”.
During his time in office, he also oversaw the white paper setting out the future of the...
