This past weekend was supposed to be full of joyful festivities for those celebrating the Lunar New Year. Instead, a shooting in Monterey Park, CA - which left 10 people dead and injured 10 more - has piled tragedy and trauma onto a community already reeling from a rise in anti-Asian violence in recent years.

The “New Amsterdam” cast is scrubbing out. The series, which is currently airing its 22-episode fourth season, will end after Season 5, Variety confirms. The fifth season will be shortened to 13 episodes.
The medical drama from creator David Schulner, executive producer Peter Horton and Universal Television landed a whopping three-season renewal in 2020.
“The story of Max Goodwin, and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam, has been inspiring,” says Lisa Katz, president of scripted programming at NBC. “We’re so grateful to David Schulner, Peter Horton, and our cast and crew for their incredible dedication, talent and collaboration.”
Universal TV President Erin Underhill adds, “When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, ‘How can I help?’ Over the last four seasons,...

Early in the pandemic, actor Christine Chang was verbally attacked in a grocery store. She told her story to “New Amsterdam” co-executive producer and writer Y. Shireen Razack, who then adapted it for the small screen, and in last week’s episode of the NBC hospital drama, Chang’s character Dr. Agnes Kao treated an Asian-American patient experiencing Ptsd from a hate crime.
In the scene, Dr. Kao was able to diagnose the patient, who was shaken by physical touch, because she, too, had experienced violence.
“We want to make accurate storytelling about underrepresented communities,” Razack, who also co-founded a think tank for inclusion and equity with the goal of increasing inclusivity in TV and advancing authentic storytelling, said during a virtual panel on Friday. “It’s at the forefront of what we’re doing because Hollywood has for so many decades perpetuated harmful stereotypes, and now we really need...

It was an hour that had some of everything, in a delightfully chaotic sort of way.
And New Amsterdam Season 3 Episode 5 was another timely installment by addressing the increased bigotry and attacks against AAPIs since the start of the pandemic, the massive blood shortages that are nationwide, grief, and downsizing.
If that sounds like a lot and as if it made for a bleak hour, it's because it was, but New Amsterdam finds the perfect balance between despair and hope.
Again, I have to say that thus far, it's the one medical drama that has consistently found a way to address the pandemic in beautiful, meaningful, relatable, raw ways without sucking the soul out of you.
They're touching on so many aspects of it without losing sight of the characters and New Amsterdam's style. After speaking with the executive producers and hearing the passion in their voices about this season,...

"It's time for rock 'n roll made by men!" "Middle-aged men..." Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for an indie rock 'n roll comedy called The Incoherents, marking the feature directorial debut of illustrator / filmmaker Jared Barel. The film stars & is written by Jeff Auer, who plays a bored, 40-something paralegal who hasn’t let go of his dream of rock stardom. It dawns on him that reunions of The Pixies, Soundgarden and other indie rock bands from the 90's could inspire his former group, The Coherents, to come together again. It also stars Walter Hoffman, Casey Clark, Amy Carlson, Annette O'Toole, Kate Arrington, Robert McKay, and Christine Chang. Alex Emanuel, who stars in the role of Jimmy, served as music supervisor, and along with Jeff Auer, wrote the original songs the band performed in the film. Also featuring music by Stew, Jimmy Gnecco, Fiona Silver, and 60/40. Looks like a mid-life-crisis-meets-rocking-out film.

In today’s film news roundup, box office reporting is going away temporarily, Hollywood Teamsters have job opportunities, comedy “The Incoherents” finds a home and Fathom Events postpones more than a dozen releases.
Box Office Reporting
The coronavirus pandemic and the closure of most movie theaters has led to a temporary suspension of North American box office reporting by Comscore, the industry’s box office tracker.
The decision came after Disney announced it would stop global box office reporting, given the current large number of theater shutdowns around the globe.
“Due to this unprecedented situation, Comscore will be temporarily suspending our usual Sunday North American Top 10 Estimates, Global chart and commentary,” Comscore said in a statement. “We will update the status of studio reporting on Monday.”
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told Variety that there will be some revenues this weekend, thanks partly to drive-in movie theaters that have remained open.
