Chloe East, one of the breakouts of Steven Spielberg’s latest feature The Fabelmans, is in talks for A24’s new thriller Heretic from A Quiet Place creatives Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
Beck and Woods wrote and will direct the movie that follows two Mormon missionaries who attempt to convert a man that turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have anticipated. Hugh Grant is also in talks for the feature.
The A24 project is eying a July start date but, as with any films shooting this summer, production can be affected by the possible SAG-AFTRA strike. Earlier this week, members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a potential strike should a new contract not be reached by the June 30 deadline.

Beck and Woods wrote the screenplay and they’re also directing the film.
Additionally, Hugh Grant (D&d: Honor Among Thieves) is in talks to star. Update: THR now reports that Chloe East (The Fabelmans) is also in talks to star.
Deadline reports…
“Plot details are officially under wraps, but the film is rumored to center on two young women of faith who are lured into a cat-and-mouse game in the home of an eccentric man.”
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote A Quiet Place with director John Krasinski, and they just wrote/directed the high concept Adam Driver dinosaur movie 65 earlier this year.
The duo also wrote/directed Haunt and wrote this year’s Stephen King film The Boogeyman.

Generation (Genera+ion), the HBO Max original, has gotten picked up by Tubi and all 16 episodes of the series are now available. Watch a trailer of the first and only season in the video posted above.
Created by Zelda Barnza and Daniel Barnz, Generation centers on a diverse group of high school students whose fearless exploration of identity and sexuality challenges the antiquated social norms embedded in their conservative community. As they navigate the intricacies of growing up with the help (and hindrance) of their ever-present devices and social media, they lean on one another to cultivate unique voices and stamp their individuality on the world around them.
Generation was short-lived on the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer and although it was full of rich characters with plenty to explore for a second season, it was canceled after its first season. The show was recently removed from HBO Max as Wbd...

After six decades of dinosaurs, killer sharks, historical epics and futuristic dystopias, you can appreciate Steven Spielberg’s desire to make an introspective, familial tale. Yet The Fabelmans remains gleefully cinematic, delivering a viewing experience which is both intimate and sweeping in characteristic Speilbergian fashion.
The director has been wholly transparent about the autobiographical nature of the film, and Gabriel Labelle is completely charming as his avatar, Sammy. The director playfully depicts Sammy’s growing confidence behind the camera, creating films which grow from schlocky monster movies to westerns and military epics.
The Fabelmans is at its most joyful when playing in these worlds and offering them a shimmering, cinematic sheen, yet the film is not wholly dipped in rose-tinted nostalgia. Sammy’s deteriorating familial life sees his parents Mitzi (Michelle Williams) and Burt (Paul Dano) grow increasingly apart, with Uncle Benny (Seth Rogen) never far away. As the family...

If you need a periodic reminder that Steven Spielberg is one of our greatest living filmmakers, look no further than "The Fabelmans," which /Film's Chris Evangelista raves about in his review. It could have been really easy for Spielberg to construct another half-hearted love letter to the movies, but there's so much more going on under the surface than its saccharine marketing would lead you to believe. The semi-autobiographical feature is less about how his fictional childhood counterpart grew up to become a filmmaking wizard, and more about how a gifted child builds his cinematic language around his parent's deteriorating marriage.
"The Fabelmans" is not only one of the best films of the year, but a personal favorite as well. It plays like Spielberg confronting a series of complicated feelings throughout his childhood, while on his way to becoming the blockbuster legend we know today. The film is stacked with...

"The Fabelmans" — Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical tale about a creative child building his cinematic language through the lens of his parent's deteriorating marriage — is an intimate epic whose emotional beats are highlighted by its ensemble cast.
Michelle Williams and Paul Dano soar as representations of his folks, in addition to Seth Rogen as the family friend, Bennie. Gabriel Labelle as Sammy Fabelman is the film's beating heart, not only because the character calls for it, but because he turns in a truly magnificent central performance. Even if you strip away the movie's fundamental building blocks, however, what you're left with is a series of memorable side characters who only need a scene to work their magic.

The wonder and magic of movies, and the angst of growing up, are at the core of filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s very personal film The Fabelmans. Set in the 1950s and 60s, the movie is a semi-autobiographical account of Spielberg’s youth, growing up in a Jewish family and finding his passion for making movies.
The Fabelmans opens with Burt Fabelman (Paul Dano) and his wife, Mitzi (Michelle Williams) standing in line with their eight-year-old son Sammy (Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord) at a theater to take in a screening of The Greatest Show on Earth. There’s a spectacular train crash near the end of the film shot using miniatures, and young Sammy becomes instantly fascinated by it.
Desperate to understand how the filmmakers accomplished the captivating scene, Sammy asks his parents for a train set for Hanukkah.

Loosely inspired by the childhood and teenage years of its director Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans has East sharing the screen with fellow up-and-comer Gabriel Labelle. Plot: Young Sammy Fabelman dreams of being a director and is encouraged by his doting mother (Michelle Williams). At the same time, his more aloof father (Paul Dano) wishes he’d pursue something more serious.
Review: The Fabelmans will forever rank as one of director Steven Spielberg’s most personal films. While telling a story about a fictional family, Spielberg has been open about how the film is based on his upbringing with Sammy Fabelman, who he was as a young man. The delicately paced but absorbing film gives us perhaps the most revealing insight into Spielberg’s development as a director than we’ve ever had, with him freely showing us how much his relationship with his parents influenced his work.

It is not how this type of story is supposed to go. Sam Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle), a lad who is also a thinly veiled portrait of Steven Spielberg’s youth, has been bullied, humiliated, and finally assaulted by his high school’s golden boy, Logan Hall (Sam Rechner). The six-foot-plus gorilla never openly made an Antisemitic jape at Sammy’s expense. But when Logan’s buddy Chad (Oakes Fegley) did, Logan stood there and laughed—and later tried to break Sammy’s nose when the smaller kid stood up for himself.
Yet here they were, a few months later and on prom night, sharing something akin to camaraderie. Logan even offers Sam a drag of a joint he just rolled. The 180-degree pivot from animosity surprises the kids, just as it does the audience who expected...

The odd thing about The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg’s thinly fictionalized account of his childhood, adolescence, and family upbringing—the factors that ultimately shaped him into one of our greatest directors—is that it’s not really about Spielberg’s screen avatar, young Sammy Fabelman (played by Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord as a little boy and uncanny Spielberg lookalike Gabriel Labelle as a teenager). For most of its 150-minute running time, the central character is Mitzi, Sammy’s mother, played as a force of nature by Michelle Williams in a towering tour de force performance.
Mitzi has an artistic, free-flowing soul and heart, but she’s trapped in the everyday routine of being a suburban homemaker with four kids and a dutiful, devoted, workaholic husband, Burt (played by Paul Dano). Burt’s not completely closed off but doesn’t exhibit much passion, even for his work, which is essentially helping to create the modern computer.

Immediately joining the first ranks of artists’ memoirs, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans is both a vivid capturing of the auteur’s earliest flashes of filmmaking insight and a portrait, full of love yet unclouded by nostalgia, of the family that made him.
Brought to life by heart-grabbing performances from Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and relative newcomer Gabriel Labelle, it brims with compassion and understanding for both of his parents, whose divorce split their tight-knit family when he was a teen.
It begins with little Sammy Fabelman (Mateo Zoryan Francis-DeFord), about to see his first movie, standing apprehensively outside the cinema. He’s scared to go inside, where he’s heard the stories are told by giant people, and his parents (Mitzi and Burt, played by Williams and Dano) try to assuage his fears. There is definitely a trend of late for film directors to take a look, in thinly disguised cinematic memoirs, at their early influences that shaped the artist and person they have become. Kenneth Branagh with Belfast and Paolo Sorrentino with The Hand of God did it last year. Of course there is Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, and others over the years. Sam Mendes, while not drawing a portrait of his younger self, revisits the movie palaces of his youth in another 2022 offering, Empire of Light, which premiered last weekend at Telluride and will also hit the Toronto Film Festival.

Before Steven Spielberg‘s The Fabelmans comes to the Toronto International Film Festival, it’s time for the PR machine to work its magic with a new promo for the film. The Fabelmans poster looks stylishly at Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical feature, presenting a series of stills captured on film reels. If you look closely, you can see footage of Paul Dano’s Burt Fabelman, Seth Rogen’s Benny, Gabriel Labelle as Sammy Fabelman, Julia Butters as Anne Fabelman, and Michelle Williams as Leah Fabelman. The images depict different stages of Sammy’s journey toward discovering his love of film.
The Fabelmans, set in post-war Arizona, centers on a young man’s discovery of a shattering family secret and an exploration of the power of movies to help us see the truth about each other and ourselves. Jeannie Berlin, Robin Bartlett, Keeley Karsten, and Judd Hirsch also star in the drama...

Seth Rogen has spoken out about his experience as part of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s Toronto Film Festival-bound The Fabelmans.
The actor shares in an upcoming edition of The Process that he wrapped his role in the film, loosely based on the iconic filmmaker’s childhood and upbringing, toward the end of last year. “It was really cool. It was fascinating. It was a really surreal experience for everyone involved,” Rogen said of the film, which has him playing a character inspired by Spielberg’s uncle. “It premieres at Toronto. I’ve literally not seen one frame of it, so it’ll be a bizarre experience.”
In conversation with Pam & Tommy editor Tatiana S. Riegel for Deadline’s video series, Rogen also addressed his “immense” relief in seeing Lily James excel in her transformational turn as the Hulu series’ Pamela Anderson.

Steven Spielberg is developing a film based on one of Steve McQueen’s most iconic film roles, Frank Bullitt, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Josh Singer will write the screenplay. The film will not be a remake but a new story with the Bullitt character at the center.
McQueen originally starred as Frank Bullitt in the the 1968 classic “Bullitt,” which followed a cop who is on the hunt for a mob kingpin that killed a witness. The film has what is considered one of the best car chase scenes in cinematic history until “The French Connection” came along three years later in 1971.
Deals are currently being finalized. Spielberg will also produce the new “Bullitt” film along with Kristie Macosko Krieger. McQueen’s children, Chad and Molly McQueen will executive produce.
Next up for Spielberg is “The Fabelmens,” the film that’s loosely based on his childhood.

Generation (Genera+ion) may not continue on for a sophomore season at HBO Max, but creator Zelda Barnz said the series achieved its goal within its short-lived airtime.
“I think its purpose was simply to exist, as something intimate and honest for queer people,” she wrote for Entertainment Weekly. “I’m grateful we got to make this show at all, because there was a great deal of uncertainty in even pitching a show about queer teenagers in such a specific setting.”
Just a day after HBO Max announced that it had opted not to renew the Lena Dunham-produced dramedy for a second season, Barnz penned her thoughts about the cancellation for Entertainment Weekly. In addition to responding to Generation‘s abrupt end, Barnz also explained the final moments of the series finale.

Grab your keys: HBO and HBO Max are leaning heavily into in-person drive-in events for their joint Emmy For Your Consideration campaign next month. Dubbed “HBO/HBO Max FYC Drive-In Theatre,” the pay cabler and its sister streamer will hold ten events between May 14 and May 21 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
This year’s Television Academy Emmy campaign rules focused on virtual panels and events, with one exception: Panels could also take place in a drive-in environment, as long as Covid-19 safety protocols are observed. Last week, NBCUniversal held the first drive-in screening of the season with an event for Bravo’s “Top Chef.”
In the case of the HBO/HBO Max events, Television Academy members will screen episodes and watch panel discussions about contenders while being fed and watching from their cars. Per HBO and HBO Max, “each event will have a branded red carpet photo opportunity for guests upon drive-in arrival,...

Haley Sanchez is quickly making a name for herself with her role as Greta on HBO Max's Generation. The series explores the intersecting lives of a group of teenagers who are trying to find their place in the world. For Sanchez, not only is this her first major TV project, but it's a dream she's worked her entire life to fulfill. "When I was younger, I feel like I wanted to [act], but it never seemed superpractical for me to do it - or at least that's what everybody told me," Sanchez told Popsugar. "This was this dream of mine that I was like, 'This is never going to happen.' It just seemed like an impossible thing." Rather than giving up, the 24-year-old decided to chase her dreams and "give it 100" by getting involved in theater, taking acting classes, and going on countless auditions. "I just wanted to be able...
