The movement picked up steam during the pandemic when many court proceedings were made available online, allowing Courtwatch volunteers around the country to monitor arraignments, bond hearings and other judicial matters that might otherwise go unwitnessed by members of the public.

To commemorate Time‘s 100th anniversary, the iconic publication’s Manhattan office will be getting a new addition: An art piece, an oversized mirror, with a graphic overlay based on its very first issue from March 3, 1923.
The piece of art, created by Mungo Thomson, is a gift to the office from Time‘s owners, Marc and Lynne Benioff. And it will be the third of Thomson’s mirrored Time pieces to find a home in the halls of Time‘s office overlooking Bryant Park.
Time announced its centennial editorial series Tuesday, including contributions from the Dalai Lama, Spike Lee, Laverne Cox, former editors Nancy Gibbs and Rick Stengel, and tentpole events set throughout the year.
While Thomson’s piece is for Time‘s centennial, it’s also a fitting metaphor as Time CEO Jessica Sibley pursues what she is calling “Time 3.0,” about creating the “next chapter in our future and...

The first big event movie of 2022 doesn’t feature any superheroes, though Kanye West might disagree. “Jeen-yuhs,” the sprawling three-part documentary chronicling 20 years of the rapper’s life, provides a remarkable window into his early hustle and determination as well as his hubris and mental health issues. Co-director Clarence “Coodie” Simmons, who first interviewed West in 1998, has built an astonishing portrait of his talent in motion and the fragility inherent to his mystique.
The most extraordinary thing about “Jeen-yuhs” is that it’s allowed to exist in the first place. West’s creativity may only be matched by his control over his life’s narrative. Netflix acquired the documentary for a reported $30 million last year and, starting February 16, the streaming platform will release it over the course of three weeks.

Time Studios, Trevor Noah‘s Day Zero Productions, Sugar23 and P&g Studios are teaming on the new docuseries The Tipping Point, which explores the rapidly shifting developments across our culture that are promising to reshape our world.
So much seems at stake right now: voting rights, civil rights, human rights, healthcare, even American democracy. Developments across our culture are rapidly leading to multiple critical moments with the potential to inevitably create the distinct delineation between before and after. Executive produced by Noah, the watershed series of documentaries will examine these developments, dissecting how we got here, and how we navigate the road forward.
“I am excited to be working with Time Studios, Sugar23 and P&g Studios on this important documentary series during one of the most fascinating and challenging periods in modern history. I hope these documentaries will act as a mirror to our society and showcase our...

“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah is no stranger to unpacking big political and cultural stories with his nightly monologue and news satire program. It’s no easy task finding the funny in the dumpster fire of news. So it makes sense that Noah’s next projects won’t suffer from a lack of ambition.
Time Studios, Noah’s Day Zero Productions, Sugar23 and P&g Studios are teaming up on “The Tipping Point,” a documentary series that will tackle the big issues of the era, from voting rights to civil rights, human rights to healthcare, American Democracy to the global refugee crisis. Those are big, bold-faced topics with a capital T — any one would be hard to do justice to in a single film, let alone a docuseries.
To that end, each film in “The Tipping Point” will be a unique, standalone documentary. The talent participating in the series includes Noah,...

R.J. Cutler, the director behind Apple TV+’s acclaimed “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” documentary, is setting his sights on Juul for his next project.
Deadline recently reported that Netflix has ordered a documentary series from Cutler based on the “Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul” book by Time Magazine correspondent Jamie Ducharme. Cutler will direct and executive produce the series, while Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce for Amblin Television. Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith will executive produce for THis Machine and Ian Orefice and Rebecca Teitel will executive produce for Time Studios.
Per Deadline, the series will chronicle the rise of Juul from a scrappy tech start-up to a multibillion-dollar tobacco company that at one point controlled 72 percent of the market. An episode count and release date are under wraps.
Amazon’s synopsis Ducharme’s book reads:
It began with a smoke break.

Exclusive: Netflix has ordered a documentary series based on Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul, the new Henry Holt book by Time Magazine correspondent Jamie Ducharme. Series will be directed and executive produced by R.J. Cutler, who’s coming off the Showtime docu Belushi and Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry for Apple TV+ and Neon.
Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will be exec producers for Amblin Television, alongside Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith for This Machine, and Ian Orefice and Rebecca Teitel for Time Studios.
Amblin optioned the book last year and Cutler came aboard in February. Series will chronicle the rise of Juul from a scrappy tech start-up to a multibillion-dollar tobacco company that at one point controlled 72% of the market. This will be no puff piece: Juul’s rise, and the high nicotine concentration and flavored products, helped spark what top health authorities labeled an epidemic of youth addiction.

Exclusive: In a highly competitive acquisition situation ahead of the documentary’s Tribeca Festival premiere, MSNBC Films has picked up Paper & Glue from Imagine Documentaries, Impact Partners, Time Studios, and Shark Island.
The feature is a project by acclaimed French artist Jr, whose known for giving a global voice to everyday people through a genre-blending combination of public art, photography and large format spectacle. In the docu, Jr turns the camera on his own work as he builds some of his most monumental projects. From early illicit graffiti videos captured on Paris rooftops at night, to the US-Mexico border, to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, to a current collaboration at a California supermax prison, the movie follows Jr as he turns these communities inside out, turning images of residents into eye-catching and immersive art installations. Paper & Glue follows the Oscar-nominated Faces Places, which was directed by Jr along with Agnès Varda.

Alex Winter, who directed the documentary “Zappa” and recently reprised his role in the “Bill & Ted” franchise, has set his next project: a doc about the history of YouTube and the video platform’s impact on society.
“Mass Effect: The Story of YouTube” is Winter’s return to films about the tech space after he got his start in documentaries with 2013’s “Downloaded,” about the rise and fall of Napster, and 2015’s “Deep Web,” a look into the hidden dark web. His new documentary explores the humble beginnings of YouTube in the attic of a pizzeria to its explosion on the world stage; the platform brought in $5 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2020 alone, with more than 30 million music and premium paid subscribers.
The film will also examine YouTube’s role in shaping the cultural and political discourse, examining present issues such as radicalization, surveillance, algorithmic capitalism, the...
