“I’m really glad we got it made for Bill,” declares Cynthia Erivo about producing, starring in and writing an original song for the indie drama “Drift.” The late Bill Paxton was originally slated to direct, before he unexpectedly passed away in 2017. For our recent webchat she adds, “I think it’s a really wonderful thing that we were able to do something that was one of Bill’s last wishes. That’s a really special thing. I’m really proud of the fact that we put all the work we could possibly have put into this to have it be a real thing, to have it be real, to have it be realized, because it wasn’t easy. We worked really hard. I feel like it’s a really special piece.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

In 2021, Jeymes Samuel unleashed “The Harder They Fall,” a revisionist Black Western with an All-Star cast and an equally impressive soundtrack. He turned the genre on its head, while still celebrating everything that he loved about Westerns of the past. And he looks to be doing the same thing with his new biblical epic “The Book of Clarence,” due out at the beginning of next year from TriStar Pictures and Legendary. And you can watch the brand-new trailer for it above.
“The Book of Clarence” stars Lakeith Stanfield as a man living in Jerusalem at the same time as Jesus. Inspired by Jesus’ rise, he “risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, and ultimately discovers that the redemptive power of belief may be his only way out” (according to the official synopsis). The movie also stars Omar Sy, Anna Diop, Rj Cyler, David Oyelowo (rocking a...

‘We got the power back’: Kwabs and Hardy Caprio on surviving the music industry and childhood trauma
In 2015, Kwabs was on the rise. The British artist born Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong had made the longlist on the BBC’s Sound Of poll, alongside Stormzy, Years & Years and Wolf Alice. An early cover of James Blake’s “The Wilhelm Scream” helped secure a record deal with Atlantic; heavyweights including Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Coldplay, Kylie Minogue and Laura Mvula sang his praises on social media. His hit single “Walk” featured on the Fifa 15 soundtrack and, in a review of his debut album Love + War, The Independent’s late critic Andy Gill praised the “warm, intensely human timbre” of Kwabs’s voice. He was poised for the kind of success that most artists only dream of. Then everything went quiet.
“By the time it got to 2016, I was tired,” Kwabs tells me. He draws a breath and repeats the word, drawing it out for emphasis: “Tiiiiiiired.” We’re sitting in...

The long-gestating Peaky Blinders feature film spin-off is to film at writer Steven Knight’s studios in Birmingham.
Speaking to British radio station Heart FM, Knight also confirmed he was close to completing the script for the film, which will follow on from the final sixth season that dropped earlier this year. The film has long been in the works, and shooting should begin “within 18 months,” he added, which is in line with previous estimations.
“We’re going to shoot it at the studios in Digbeth, and on location in Digbeth in Birmingham,” he said this morning. “Digbeth and Small Heath [are] where the Peaky Blinders actually roamed, so it’s like Peaky’s coming home.”

Laura Mvula has released a new song, “Church Girl,” from her upcoming album, Pink Noise, which is set to arrive July 2nd via Atlantic Records.
“Church Girl” boasts a big, glossy beat that feels taken straight from the Eighties, and it finds Mvula confronting the doubts that came after the acclaim that accompanied her first two albums didn’t necessarily materialize into serious success. “How can you dance with the devil on your back?” Mvula belts during the punchy chorus, “How can you move?/Caught up in a picture-perfect/That will never last.

Of all the great movies the Oscars have shunned over the years, Drive's snub in 2012 was a tough one to take.
Ryan Gosling stars as the Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver in his most mesmerising performance since he was a Jewish neo-Nazi in 2001's The Believer. Carey Mulligan is the struggling single mum who Gosling falls for, and a between-Breaking Bad seasons Bryan Cranston plays his mechanic partner in crime.
Nicolas Winding Refn's direction is suave and daring; he follows the blood, sweat and tears of The Driver's journey with total badassness and ends up with something in between Taxi Driver and Michael Mann's Thief... And then there's the soundtrack. What a soundtrack.
So when Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe announced that he was curating a score of new music for the film masterpiece, you can understand the anger and confusion it sparked. But...

Zane Lowe has defended his forthcoming BBC Radio 1 Drive soundtrack project.
The DJ has curated a new soundtrack for Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn's cult hit, bringing in Chvrches, The 1975, Baauer, Banks, Bastille, Bring Me the Horizon, Eric Prydz, Jon Hopkins, Laura Mvula, The Neighbourhood and Zcc (Simon Neil) to create new music.
The re-scored film will be shown on BBC Three on October 30 at 10pm.
Despite backing from director Refn and the makers of the 2011 film, fans have taken to social media to voice their objection to replacing the likes of Kavinsky, College, Electric Youth and Chromatics from the original soundtrack.

One of the most acclaimed elements of Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" was the score - a blend of original electronic numbers by composer Cliff Martinez along with a couple of key pop songs such as College & Electric Youth's "A Real Hero," The Chromatics' "Tick of the Clock" and Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx's "Nightcall".
For a film with minimal dialogue, the score played a very important part in generating that film's sense of tone. Now, in an intersting experiment, Radio 1 and BBC Three have announced plans to rescore the entire film for a one-time only broadcast in the UK next week.

Quite simply, the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" is one of the best of the past few years. Seamlessly blending Cliff Martinez's distinct, throbbing score with retro-future jams by Kavinsky, College, Chromatics, and Desire, the entire sonic palette helped inform the neon mood of the Ryan Gosling starring film. But what happens when you drape the movie with a bunch of random new music? Well, you're about to find out. A 30-second trailer—with Lowe talking all over it—does preview a bit of what it will sound like, and, unsurprisingly, results may vary. Refn carefully crafted his film with...

Matt Richardson has explained why he left The Xtra Factor ahead of the show's 11th run.
The 23-year-old comedian - who only joined the ITV2 spin-off last series - admitted that co-presenter Caroline Flack's exit heavily influenced his decision.
"It was so much fun, but I wouldn't have felt right going back without Caroline," he told Digital Spy at the Wta Pre-Wimbledon Party presented by Dubai Duty Free last night (June 19).
"Our whole crew has changed, so it would have been a totally different show again," he added.
"It's a shame, but it gives me half a year to write a new tour, which I really need."
Richardson also revealed that although he'll miss working alongside Flack on Xtra Factor, he is looking forward to what lies ahead.
"I really like doing stuff alone," he said. "As a stand-up I've been working by myself for five years. "It's very natural,...

This low-key, but energetic Madison, Wi-based sextet are fronted by the extremely charismatic lead singer Monica Martin. The band's Zach Johnston (guitar / banjo) directed the video for "Slow Motion" from their soon-to-be-released self-titled debut. I caught them live last month in Williamsburg opening for Laura Mvula. Perfect match. They both share a quirky but beguiling otherworldly musical charm albeit Phox leans more towards world beat. Currently own tour in support of their June 23rd effort.
