The glut of shows being pulled from streaming services continues.
Starz has pulled a trio of titles – Dangerous Liaisons, Becoming Elizabeth and Step Up from its streaming service. All three titles have been canceled but it’s another example of a company taking finished shows off their own service.
It comes after HBO Max pulled series such as Westworld, The Nevers, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife as well as a slew of reality shows including FBoy Island and a raft of animated titles from its service last year.
Over the weekend, HBO Max also pulled a number of episodes of the original Looney Tunes, including seasons 16 to 31, as well as three seasons of The Flintstones. These shows were removed after their licenses expired.
The strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery was in part formed by tax write offs that it could gain after the merger, as well as interest...

"Dangerous Liaisons", the new series 'reimagining' the 18th century novel of the same name, starring Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton, has been canceled after one season on Starz:
"...'Dangerous Liaisons' is a bold prelude of the classic 18th century novel focusing on the origin story of the 'Marquise de Merteuil' in Paris on the eve of the revolution. This modern take on a classic story takes audiences through wonder and terror, beauty and degradation, seduction and deception in pre-revolutionary Paris.
"Driven to right the wrongs of their past, survival depends on skills of seduction and manipulation of the French nobility.

Reversing renewals is becoming a trend in 2022.
Starz has canceled Dangerous Liaisons, despite picking up a second season earlier this year.
Deadline first reported the news, revealing that the final three episodes of Dangerous Liaisons Season 1 will air as scheduled.
The series had been renewed ahead of its series premiere in November.
While it has been reported that Starz felt the show was in a strong place creatively, the numbers were not strong enough to sustain the series any longer.
The series has been below 100,000 viewers for its live + same-day ratings, even going as low as 52,000 viewers.
The premium cabler has not reported any delayed viewing numbers, likely meaning the show didn't make much of an impact post-airdate.
The second season was expected to begin production in Prague in 2023.
“‘Dangerous Liaisons’ is addictive, provocative and beautifully rendered,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming at Starz said when the show was...

Starz has canceled “Dangerous Liaisons” after one season — despite that the historical drama was renewed just last month, Variety has confirmed.
Though executives at Starz had much faith behind the series, sources say the team decided to axe the show due to it not finding its audience. The remaining three episodes in the first season will be released as scheduled.
“Dangerous Liaisons” was given a Season 2 order in November, prior to its Nov. 6 premiere.
Alice Elgert and Nicholas Denton star in the show as the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont. Based on the famous 18th century novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the Starz series served as a prequel to the historic tale showing the origin story of the notorious couple.

Dangerous Liaisons continues to titillate, tease, and torment.
There seems to be no end to Camille and Valmont's mind games, but they still can't help but flirt.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive clip from Sunday's upcoming episode, which sees the former lovers meeting in a most unlikely place.
Dangerous Liaisons has made such a splash that it has already been picked up for a second season.
It's a prequel series to the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos and play by Christopher Hampton (which was made into a film by Stephen Frears).
Camille (Alice Englert) last saw Valmont (Nicholas Denton) attempting to seduce a wealthy older woman at the opera.
Here she makes an offer -- and demands.
At Madame Berthe's dress shop, Camille has never looked more regal in a magnificent pink gown.
In fact, Pascal doesn't even recognize her.
More playful banter follows, giving way to veiled insults,...

This article discusses broad plot points from the novel Dangerous Liaisons but does not contain spoilers for the series.
Starz’s newest period drama miniseries Dangerous Liaisons is the cure for anyone who found Lady Whistledown’s revelations in Bridgerton too tame. The secrets of debutantes pale in comparison to the married elites of pre-Revolution Paris who carry on secret affairs while pretending to be faithful to their spouses. These affairs also expose class and gender conflicts in a world even more cutthroat than the Ton.
Dangerous Liaisons is a prequel to the events of Pierre Choderos de Laclos’ novel of the same name published in 1782. Your new favorite period drama has arrived in all its glory.
On Dangerous Liaisons Season 1 Episode 1, we are introduced to the world of Camille (Alice Englert) and Pascal (Nicholas Denton) -- along with the world that they are desperate to join.
It's a dark, dangerous, beautiful place that is harsh and unwelcoming -- and once you are in, you must always have your wits about you.
This prequel series was created for television (and this episode was written) by Harriet Warner. Her dialogue is rich and poetic, and her characters are intelligent and complex.
So much ground is covered in this episode -- it's impressive! So many layers of deceit, intrigue, and betrayal are revealed. It's wild to think this is only the first episode of eight. It's an ambitious set-up, pitting the two lovers against each other.
Presenting Camille and Pascal as lovers first makes such a beautiful narrative sense.

Superficially, Dangerous Liaisons would seem to be serving up everything a Dangerous Liaisons series ought to. The Starz drama is positively overflowing with beautiful people vowing love and revenge with equal fervor, toying with each other’s sentiments and reputations in pursuit of power or just plain fun — all from within the gorgeously ornate trappings of 18th-century French nobility, the impending revolution barely a whisper on the wind.
And for a spell, it feels like it could be enough. But as the season progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the accusations the characters throw at one another of lacking heart may as well be levied toward the series itself. With paper-thin characters and a narrative that prioritizes momentum over emotional depth, its confectionary delights dissolve as quickly as sugar on the tongue.

Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton are two rising Australian stars who play the leads in Starz's new Dangerous Liaisons prequel series.
Set in France in the late 18th century on the eve of the Revolution, Dangerous Liaisons takes us back to the youth of the iconic characters from the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, made famous by Christopher Hampton's play and Stephen Frears's subsequent 1988 film.
This version of Dangerous Liaisons introduces us to Camille and Pascal, young lovers trying to break into the lush, decadent world of the aristocracy by any means necessary.
Alice Englert was recently seen as Nurse Dolly in Netflix's Ratched. Englert plays Camille, the woman at the center of it all.
Nicholas Denton has acted in countless theatre productions, as well as television and film, where he also writes and produces. Denton plays the driven, determined rake, Pascal.

“All of history [is] written by the winners, and also usually written by the men,” said “Dangerous Liaisons” actress Alice Englert during a recent interview with IndieWire via Zoom. She’s certainly not wrong, and it’s a key reason why she thinks audiences consume historical dramas in general and Starz’s new adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ novel in particular. The series, a prequel to the book that follows the future Victome de Valmont (Nicholas Denton) and the Marquise de Merteuil (Englert) when they are Pascal and Camille, before they become the duplicitous scheming characters we know from the various adaptations — is an attempt to look at historical dramas free of artifice.
“You have these images and these artifacts that are, in their own way, distorted and have kind of historical Photoshop,” said Englert. In a way, this filtering of history as glamorous enhances the manipulation that is at the heart of the series.

This smart, steamy series may share a title with the Oscar-winning 1988 film starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich, but the equally lush Starz production of Dangerous Liaisons is a prequel. Gritty and glamorous pre-revolutionary Paris is home to the younger, more naive Marquis de Merteuil, here known as Camille (Alice Englert), a sex worker, and her lover Valmont (Nicholas Denton), a disinherited aristocrat turned mapmaker who wants his title back. He hides from her his side hustle of seducing rich women who provide him with the finer things in life. (Credit: Starz) “We meet them at a real place of struggle, in lives that they want out from,” says executive producer Harriet Warner, who drew inspiration from the timeless 1782 novel. “It’s a journey from innocence to experience, to corruption, especially for Camille.” The two are ready to run away together when she discovers letters from his many lovers and...

Starz has ordered a second season of “Dangerous Liaisons,” days ahead of its series premiere on Nov. 6.
Alice Englert (“The Power Of The Dog”) and Nicholas Denton (“Glitch”) play literary lovers-slash-enemies Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont. The series imagines a prelude to Laclos’ 18th-century novel in which the pair meet in Paris and have a passionate affair on the cusp of the French Revolution. The couple must rely on their manipulation of the French nobility and themselves to survive: Camille (Englert) is taken in by the current Marquise (played by Lesley Manville) while Valmont chases after a title that was recently stripped from him.
The series also stars Kosar Ali, Carice van Houten, Hilton Pelser, Fisayo Akinade, Michael McElhatton, Nathanael Saleh, Colette Dalal Tchantcho, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Tom Wlaschiha, and Paloma Faith.
Season 2 is expected to begin shooting in early 2023 in Prague, Czech Republic.

“Dangerous Liaisons” is one of the great modern classic films — emphasis on modern. Though it was released more than 30 years ago, and concerns characters living their lives in 18th-century France, its interrogation of the carefully constructed performances people use to cover their basest desires and impulses feels as present-day as an Instagram filter.

The 1782 French epistolary novel from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos is becoming an eight-episode series, which will debut on November 6, 2022. The book has seen multiple adaptations over the years, including the three-time Academy Award-winning 1989 film starring John Malkovich and Glenn Close. The critically-acclaimed story will now head to television and the focus will be on the origin story of the novel's characters. The Starz series will illustrate how Marquise de Merteuil (Alice Englert) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Nicholas Denton) met as passionate young lovers in Paris and will represent the extravagance of the French aristocracy ahead of the French revolution. There's a thin line between love and war — especially when Camille and Valmont are involved. If those names are ringing a bell, then perhaps you're very well informed about classic French literature. Or maybe you just appreciate the power of an erotic thriller, because this particular romantic duo has taken to the big screen on more than one occasion.
Originating with the 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the complicated romance of Camille and Valmont has inspired countless adaptations over the years. Two of the most famous were released within a year of one another: Stephen Frears' "Dangerous Liaisons" and Miloš Forman's "Valmont." The two '80s movies boasted A-list casts, with "Dangerous Liaisons" starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Uma Thurman, while "Valmont" featured Colin Firth, Annette Bening, and Meg Tilly. Both versions stuck pretty close to the original novel, tracing the tale of two ex-lovers...
