Spoiler Alert: This story contains storylines from “Never Say Goodbye,” the May 22 Season 12 finale of “Chicago Fire.”
It was a night for goodbyes on “Chicago Fire.” The Season 12 finale was the final episode for Eamonn Walker as Battalion Chief Wallace Boden. The actor, who has served as the chief of Firehouse 51 since the series debuted in 2012, will no longer appear as a series regular beginning next season.
After a hard call, Boden decided to throw his hat into the ring for the job of Deputy Commissioner, mostly because those in the running (specifically Chief Robinson) wouldn’t be able to lead in a way that the department deserves. If he was to become DC, he’d have to leave 51 for good. After telling the team, he then told Herrmann (David Eigenberg) that in the slim chance he got the promotion, he’d like him to take over his job.

A big change is coming to Firehouse 51. Longtime Chicago Fire cast member Eamonn Walker will make his last appearance as a series regular in the show’s May 22 season 12 finale. Unsurprisingly, Deputy Chief Boden’s exit will be an emotional one, based on a teaser for the upcoming episode.
Eamonn Walker says goodbye in ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 12 finale
Chicago Fire’s strike-shortened season 12 has already seen a few major cast shakeups. Kara Killmer (Sylvie Brett) and Alberto Rosende (Blake Gallo) left early in the season, and Jocelyn Hudon joined the show midway through the season as paramedic Lyla Novak.
Now, one of the NBC drama’s longest-serving cast members is on his way out. Walker has decided to leave the show after 12 seasons. Though he’s expected to be back in a recurring capacity in the future, his last episode as a series regular will be “Never Say Goodbye.” (NBC...

“Character dilemmas and shocks abound!” Chicago Fire executive producer Andrea Newman warns of the Season 12 finale. In “Never Say Goodbye,” airing on May 22, Boden (Eamonn Walker) makes a decision that impacts the race for Deputy Commissioner. It’s also Walker’s final episode as a series regular, and the promo highlights the emotional farewell to come. “Boden has been managing a lot of change at home (with his stepson James) and at 51, and learned a lot while doing it, including about himself,” Newman tells TV Insider. “A shocking incident in the finale will highlight what it means to him to be a leader, and everyone close to him will be impacted in a huge way by the decision he makes.” And it sounds like there are other shakeups to come as well. “There are so many decisions to ...

Chicago Fire is about to close its doors on Season 12.
The season has been a bit disjointed due to having fewer episodes. Losing cast members didn’t help.
Kara Killmer ended her run as Paramedic Sylvie Brett, and Alberto Rosende finished his time as Firefighter Blake Gallo.
Gallo’s replacement also left. That role was Firefighter Jake Gibson, played by Rome Flynn for a few episodes.
Jack Damon (Michael Bradway) has replaced Gibson, while Lizzy Novak (Joselyn Hudon) has replaced Brett. Will they last? Stay tuned!
Unfortunately, another series regular ends their run on the season finale.

Chicago Fire will look different when it opens Season 13 this fall. Several cast members are leaving the show, and things appear to be in for a shakeup at the station. Eamonn Walker (Deputy District Chief Wallace Boden) is leaving the show as a full-time cast member. Now, another beloved character might also exit the series.
Here is who else might be leaving and what might be next for Chicago Fire.
Chicago Fire Losing Beloved Veteran Firefighter?
One of the original Chicago Fire firefighters has been missing for a few episodes now and many fans are asking if he is leaving the show. This is even more distressing since so many other characters are also departing after Season 12. On top of Walker leaving the main cast (he will stick around as a recurring character), three other characters are also departing.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11 “Inside Man.”] For its 250th episode, Chicago Fire took a page out of Die Hard‘s book: Men break into Firehouse 51 and steal Truck 81—but unbeknownst to them, Severide (Taylor Kinney) hopped on it! The firefighters, of course, call in the Cpd, and during the investigation, Ritter (Daniel Kyri) shares his suspicions about the newest recruit, Damon (Michael Bradway), who has been very vocal about his love for the firehouse (but lied about taking one of Severide’s classes at the academy) and has a reason he’s not sharing for being there. In other words, 51 is not having an easy time replacing Gallo (Alberto Rosende) or Brett (Kara Killmer); Violet (Hanako Greensmith) has brought Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) in full-time but she’s still very much a question mark. “New characters also bring out new sides of all of 51’s residents, so it’s been a...

There’s no more endearing firefighter on Chicago Fire than Darren Ritter (played by Daniel Kyri), who joined Firehouse 51 in 2018 (first recurring then as a regular) after being cut from another house for freezing on a call. Despite that blemish, Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Lt. Herrmann (David Eigenberg) backed the new candidate, and he won a candidate position at the house. Quietly but openly gay, Ritter became part of the house’s “Three Musketeers,” best friends with Gallo (Alberto Rosende) and Emt Violet (Hanako Greensmith) until Gallo left the Cfd in this season’s premiere. Always kind and helpful, Ritter has grown and prospered. Below, Kyri talks about May 8 episode, in which he doesn’t just fight a conflagration but faces the revelation of his current boyfriend to his team, and shares his new modeling experience. Chicago Fire Season 12 has added a new firefighter who will appear in the final episodes this year.
The show took a long spring hiatus but finally returns on May 1 with new episodes and a new cast member.
Rome Flynn ended his run as firefighter Jake Gibson, with the character failing to finish the season.
Gibson entered the picture with a troubled past, including accidentally killing someone in the boxing ring. His demons caught up with him, and a drug problem caused Gibson to leave Firehouse 51.
That character was added as a replacement for Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende), who left Chicago to spend time with his newly-found family.
Gallo had been a fan-favorite on Chicago Fire, so it was a difficult task to replace him. The next man up now enters the revolving door at this particular firehouse.

The Chicago Fire cast added soap star Rome Flynn for Season 12.
Following the exit of Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende), a new firefighter joined Firehouse 51.
Former boxer Jake Gibson became the new man at the house, but he had big shoes to fill. Gallo was a fan favorite and was integral to many storylines.
The writers made Gibson a troubled character who was rough around the edges and not excited about joining a “family” at Firehouse 51.

Firehouse 51 has lost another one of its own. New Chicago Fire cast member Rome Flynn has exited the NBC drama after six episodes.
Rome Flynn exits ‘Chicago Fire’ (L-r) Rome Flynn as Derrick Gibson, Christian Stolte as Randy McHolland in ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 12 | Adrian S Burrows Sr/NBC
Flynn joined Chicago Fire at the beginning of season 12 as new recruit Derrick Gibson, an ex-boxer with a troubled past. He took a spot on Truck 81 previously occupied by Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende), who left the show in the season premiere to move to Detroit.
Unfortunately, Gibson’s time at 51 was brief. As he eventually revealed to Carver (Jake Lockett), he’d embarked on a career as a firefighter after accidentally killing a man during a boxing match. But the trauma from that incident still haunted him. He was also abusing drugs in an attempt to cope with his mental health issues.

A big storyline for Chicago Fire Season 12 is the wedding between Sylvie Brett and Matthew Casey.
Casey (played by Jesse Spencer) returned in the Chicago Fire Season 11 finale to help with a domestic terrorism case. He was on a task force due to the nature of the threats.
After returning to Chicago, Casey realized he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Brett (Kara Killmer). Casey popped the question as the season finale ended, but fans had to wait for an answer.
Chicago Fire Season 12 began with a six-month time jump. It required character conversations to bridge the gap in storylines that had been wrapped up.
Mouch survived his injuries, Stella Kidd tracked down and brought Kelly Severide back to Chicago, and Brett agreed to marry Casey.
Getting from that proposal to being married could be a difficult road, at least according to showrunner Andrea Newman.

The January 24 episode of Chicago Fire paid tribute to Dale Hay.

“In memory of Dale Hay,” read the card, which was not accompanied by a photo.
These dedication cards are used at the end of network dramas to pay tribute to someone who has passed away.
Typically, the person in the tribute had a role on the show or behind the scenes.
When it’s not a cast member seen on screen, a dedication card can lead to many fan questions.
Who was Dale Hay, and how was he associated with the Chicago Fire cast?
Dale E. Hay Jr. from Chicago passed away on September 8, 2023.

Chicago P.D. spoilers now provide fans insight about which character will be focused on in upcoming episodes.
As seen frequently in Season 10, the writers have chosen to focus on one character in each episode. This also allows other cast members to take off an episode or two.
An example would be an episode focusing on Officer Kim Burgess trying to recover from her abduction and getting shot.
This method of storytelling is a departure from earlier Chicago P.D. episodes where the entire Intelligence team was involved in each step.
It works at revealing personal stories about a particular character, but it also causes other characters to take a back seat that night.
The new episodes have begun similarly, with Detective Hailey Upton having most of the premiere episode focused on her.
