Not a lot was expected of Richard Linklater’s 23rd film, “Hit Man,” before it premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, September 5. For one, it was coming at the end of a mini trend of films studying contract killers (or those who impersonate them). First came David Fincher’s “The Killer.” There was also Woody Allen’s “Coup de Chance,” which has a murder-for-hire as a central plotline. “Hit Man” came relatively late to the game, but in the process may have snatched the thunder out from under the other two in terms of audience response and early critical buzz that’s heaping praise on the acclaimed director of “Boyhood,” “School of Rock,” “Apollo 10 1/2,” “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight.”
The indie action comedy “Hit Man” stars Glen Powell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater. The story is very loosely based on a 2001 Texas Monthly article...

Triangle of Sadness is a 2022 comedy movie written and directed by Ruben Östlund starring Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, Woody Harrelson and Zlatko Buric. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
Hierarchies are inversed, norms are challenged in this interesting and humorous film that does not shy away from commenting on human folly and social norms.
Premise
The fashion celebrity couple and influencers, Carl and Yaya, are invited on a luxury yacht cruise exclusively for the top 0.9 in the wealth hierarchy. Onboard they will meet some interesting characters: Dimitry, the Russian oligarch and his wife Vera, the elderly British couple Clementine and Winston the arms dealer, and the lonely tech billionaire, Jarmo. At the helm of the crew and yacht is the rather unbalanced Captain Smith. What initially appears instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting for survival.

Although it’s still up in the air when Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” will be available to all U.S. moviegoers, with many theaters still closed, the reviews are in – and largely positive.
“Tenet” is slated for an international premiere on Aug. 26 and will open in select U.S. cities on Sept. 3, after its release date was pushed back three times due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, critics are promising that the film is worth the wait, and that the pent-up anticipation from all of its delays will make the public even more hungry to watch it.
Variety‘s reviewer Guy Lodge called the film – starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki – a “grandly entertaining, time-slipping spectacle,” praising its futuristic elements and surprising straightforwardness:
“The sheer meticulousness of Nolan’s grand-canvas action aesthetic is enthralling, as if to compensate for the stray loose threads and teasing paradoxes of...

If ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ were the cheeseburger of music icon biopics, then ‘Rocketman’ is the sirloin steak – with lobster on the side.” – Dan Wooton, The Sun
Judging from the dazzling reception from the notoriously tough crowd that attends the Cannes International Film Festival, the first true Oscar-worthy film of 2019 has landed. “Rocketman,” the tune-filled Elton John biopic with fantastical touches received a boisterous 4-minute standing ovation after having its world premiere out of competition on the French Rivera.
Given that it is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who also took over the reins of last year’s musical ode to another British pop superstar and gay icon Freddie Mercury, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” after original helmer Bryan Singer was fired, the critics couldn’t help but compare the two. And, as the quote above suggests, “Rocketman” is a far superior cut of meaty truth-based cinema that currently has a 94% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score.

Director Paul Greengrass has brought his unique brand of verite thriller to Netflix: “22 July” debuted on the streaming service on Wednesday, October 10, telling the true story of the title day in 2011 when right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in Norway’s worst attack since World War II. How does it compare to Greengrass’s previous docudramas about real-life acts of terror “Bloody Sunday” (2002), “United 93” (2006) and “Captain Phillips” (2013)?
As of this writing the film has scored 73 on MetaCritic based on 21 reviews. And it has an 83% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 47 reviews. The Tomatometer consensus is that it “offers a hard-hitting close-up look at the aftereffects of terrorism, telling a story with a thriller’s visceral impact and the lingering emotional resonance of a drama.”
