After over two decades, Baltimore prosecutors have dropped all charges against Adnan Syed following his recent release from prison. The subject of the first season of Sarah Koenig's "Serial" podcast had his murder conviction in the case of the 1999 killing of Baltimore Woodlawn High School student Hae Min Lee vacated on Sept. 19, ABC News reported. Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby and Sentencing Review Unit (Sru) Chief Becky Feldman had filed a motion on Sept. 14 announcing they would file for the conviction to be vacated and for Syed to potentially receive a new trial.
"Since the inception of my administration, my prosecutors have been sworn to not only aggressively advocate on behalf of the victims of crime, but in the pursuit of justice, - when the evidence exists- to correct the wrongs of the past where doubt is evident," said Mosby in a Sept. 14 statement. Prosecutors have officially dropped all charges against Adnan Syed, the Baltimore man made famous after being featured in the first season of popular podcast “Serial.”
The decision comes three weeks after Syed — who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 2000 — had his murder conviction overturned by Judge Melissa Phinn of Baltimore City Circuit Court. In her ruling, which came after prosecutors filed a motion to vacate the conviction, Phinn said the decision came after she determined that the prosecutors on the initial trial failed to turn in evidence to the court that pointed to two additional suspects and would have significantly helped Syed’s case.
Immediately following the ruling, Syed was released from prison after serving 23 years, since he was 18. Although prosecutors recommended that Syed be given a new trial in their initial motion, the dropping of charges ensures that Syed will not undergo another trial.

Sarah Koenig, who over a decade ago brought the story of Adnan Syed to a mainstream audience on Serial, was surprised by the decision to release Syed after overturning his conviction for the 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee.
Speaking to The New York Times following Syed being freed on Monday, Koenig said, “I was shocked. I did not see this coming at all. One of the first things I did was call Adnan’s brother and then his mother — they told me they didn’t know either. The prosecutors who filed the motion to release him kept it pretty tight, it seems.”

One of Adnan Syed's most vocal supporters is speaking out and celebrating his legal victory. Just one day after a Baltimore judge vacated the 41-year-old's conviction for the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee, Serial podcast host Sarah Koenig reacted to the courtroom ruling in a new episode. "I was in the courtroom for the hearing," Sarah shared in the Sept. 20 episode of her true crime podcast. "At the beginning, Young Lee, the brother of Hae Min Lee whose murder was about to be unsolved, spoke via zoom directly to judge Melissa Phinn. Young Lee tried to keep it together, but he couldn't. He also told the judge he believes in the justice system. He's not...

Listen to the new Serial episode below.
In the new episode Koenig describes the atmosphere in the courtroom yesterday as Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn vacated the first-degree murder conviction and ordered Syed’s release from prison after 23 years behind bars. “Shockingly quiet,” is how Koenig describes it.

Adnan Syed, one of the key subjects of the first season of smash hit true crime podcast Serial, is being released from prison.
After spending over 22 years in prison, lawyers found information “concerning the possible involvement of two alternative suspects” other than Adnan Syed and that legal teams “have identified significant reliability issues regarding the most critical pieces of evidence at trial.” However, it is not outright being stated that Adnan Syed is not guilty.
According to the Baltimore City State’s Attorney, “We’re not yet declaring Adnan Syed is innocent…But we are declaring that in the interest of fairness and justice he is entitled to a new trial.”
Further, according to a public defender: “Given the stunning lack of reliable evidence implicating Mr. Syed, coupled with increasing evidence pointing to other suspects, this unjust conviction cannot stand.”
It has not yet been decided if prosecutors will go forward with a new trial.

A judge has overturned the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, whose legal case was the subject of the hit podcast series Serial. On Monday 19 September, the 41-year-old was released after 23 years behind bars.
Follow live updates around the case here.
Syed was convicted in 2000 of first-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping and the imprisonment of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Prosecutors had recently requested Syed’s release on the basis that “the state no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction”, after an investigation cast doubts about the validity of cellphone tower data and uncovered two alternate unnamed suspects. Syed has always maintained his innocence.
Celebrities who were fans of the podcast or had other ties to the case reacted to the bombshell news on Twitter.
“Case is overturned!!! Adnan Syed is once again presumed innocent in the eyes of the law”, wrote the Pretty in Pink actor Jon Cryer.

How about that "Only Murders in the Building" Season 2 finale?! If you thought it couldn't get any crazier, the writers take it up a notch. That set up quite the predicament for our little trio of crime podcasters. With a new murder to solve, the stakes couldn't be higher, and it becomes a race against time, Detective Williams and her team, and Cinda Canning's (Tina Fey) rival investigation. The team behind podcast breakouts Serial and S-Town have set their latest audio project – a podcast series about an alleged conspiracy to introduce an Islamist agenda into schools in the UK.
Serial Productions, which was acquired by The New York Times Company in 2020, is producing The Trojan Horse Affair with host Brian Reed, who was behind Serial follow-up S-Town, and Hamza Syed, a doctor-turned-reporter.
The pair are investigating a mystery at the heart of a scandal that emerged in the UK in 2013.
When a strange letter kicked off a national panic in Britain, Syed was skeptical. The letter appeared to be a secret communique between Islamic extremists who’d been infiltrating the city schools in Birmingham – Syed’s hometown – in a supposed plot called Operation Trojan Horse. The letter led to a crackdown on Muslim educators and harsh new British counterterrorism measures.

The team behind the widely-popular Serial podcast will take on election fraud with the limited audio series The Improvement Association.
Launching Tuesday, April 13, The Improvement Association is a five-part series that features host, reporter and This American Life producer Zoe Chace as she travels to Bladen County, North Carolina to investigate the power of election fraud allegations. In 2019, Bladen County, North Carolina, made national headlines, becoming one of the few cases in modern history where a congressional race was voided due to fraud. The results of the election were thrown out because of evidence the winner’s campaign had tampered with absentee ballots.
But according to some Bladen County locals, the authorities got it all wrong. For at least a decade, people in this rural county have been pointing the finger at Horace Munn, the leader of a powerful Black advocacy group called the Bladen County Improvement Association Pac, accusing...

HBO is in development on a limited series based on the third season of Sarah Koenig’s podcast “Serial,” with LeBron James among the executive producers.
The series will examine the criminal justice system at work in Cleveland, Ohio. Following a young cop and the man he’s accused of beating, it illuminates the deeply flawed inner workings of a middle-American courthouse and how the system impacts every person it touches: cops, lawyers and citizens accused of and victimized by crimes.
James is a native of nearby Akron, Ohio, and played 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shola Amoo will write and direct the series, with Koenig executive producing as well. Other executive producers include Emmanuel Dzotsi and Alissa Shipp of Serial Productions, Maverick Carter, Kary Antholis for Crime Story Media and Eric Oberland and Jamal Henderson from The SpringHill Company.

The podcast-to-tv boom continues with HBO adapting the third season of Serial as a limited series.
The network is developing the remake with rising writer/director Shola Amoo and exec produced by Lebron James and former HBO exec Kary Antholis.
The third season of the award-winning podcast, which arguably set in motion the current boom for non-fiction audio series, was set in the Cleveland justice system. Unlike the first two seasons, which featured one case, it looked at the system overall with focuses on cases before the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas such as a woman who accidentally hits a police officer after being assaulted in a bar and a young African American man who is assaulted by police officers for being in possession of marijuana.

Issa Rae and Adam McKay are teaming up to adapt the Serial Productions podcast “Nice White Parents” into a half-hour series at HBO, Variety has learned.
The project has received a pilot commitment at the premium cabler. The show is described as a satirical look at the conflict and comedy that arise when highly resourced white parents, who claim to have the best intentions, wield their influence over generations of black and brown students within the NY public school system.
The search is currently on for a showrunner for the project. Rae and Montrel McKay will executive produce via the new production company, HooRae. Adam McKay and Todd Schulman will executive produce via Hyperobject Industries, which is currently under a first-look deal with HBO. Chana Joffe-Walt, Julie Snyder, Alissa Shipp, and Sarah Koenig of Serial Productions will also executive produce along with Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry of 3 Arts Entertainment.

The New York Times has acquired Serial Productions, the company behind the hit podcast Serial.
As part of the deal, the media company will enter into a creative and strategic alliance with longtime radio show This American Life, which developed the original Serial pod, about the murder conviction of Adnan Syed. The first season was downloaded on average 20 million times per episode and was at the forefront of the podcast boom.
Serial Productions is led by Julie Snyder, Sarah Koenig and Neil Drumming. At its new home with the Nyt it will continue to commission and edit its own stories, which will be amplified by the paper, and the goal is to inject more resource and up the producer’s volume. The first joint production will be Nice White Parents, which will see Chana Joffe-Walt examine the role white families play in shaping public education.

“Limetown,” the podcast from creators Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, was a runaway hit when it debuted in 2015 largely due to its use of format. Four years later, its creators are teaming up with Jessica Biel and Facebook, hoping “Limetown” can make a similar mark on screen.
Premiering at the height of the post-“Serial” true crime podcast boom, the audio version of “Limetown” borrowed the genre’s most distinctive trademarks to tell a fictional story about 300 people who disappeared from a shady Tennessee research facility without so much as a note. The Case Against Adnan Syed follows the investigation explored in podcast Serial. Director Amy Berg discusses the hazards of true crime.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
In 2014, podcast Serial became a massive international phenomenon. Telling the story, week by week, of the murder of schoolgirl Hae Min Lee and the subsequent conviction of 17-year-old Adnan Syed for the crime, the podcast exposed holes in the prosecution's case that cast serious doubt on Syed's guilt. He's still behind bars, though many think he's innocent.

Asia McClain says there’s a very simple reason Adnan Syed couldn’t have killed his former high school girlfriend, Hae Lee, 20 years ago: “I know it’s physically impossible for people to be in two places at one time.”
Syed, the subject of Sarah Koenig’s hit podcast “Serial” and Amy Berg’s HBO docuseries “The Case Against Adnan Syed,” was convicted of killing Lee, his ex-girlfriend, in 1999. But McClain, who was never called to testify during the first trial, said she had a 20-minute conversation with Syed in their high school’s library at the same time prosecutors say Lee was murdered.
They said Syed had killed Lee because she had begun dating someone else, and he was angry and jealous.

HBO's The Case Against Adnan Syed brings us back to the 1999 murder of Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee, and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. The four-part documentary picks up where the first season of Sarah Koenig's Serial podcast ended in 2014, and is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg. The Case Against Adnan Syed, which premiered on March 10, reinvestigates Hae's murder by combing over the backstories of those involved, examining the questionable law enforcement investigation into her murder, and the conviction made 20 years ago. While Serial used interviews and exposition to tell Adnan's story to listeners, Berg's documentary unsurprisingly provides a more visual look at the entire situation.
The first episode of the series is a perfect example of how different the documentary is from the podcast. In order to bring some personhood back to Hae Min, Berg employs voice-over actors and uses animation to bring Hae's story to life.

The first episode of HBO’s new documentary “The Case Against Adnan Syed” premiered on Sunday, once again bringing the murder conviction of the Baltimore man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend back into the headlines. Syed, the subject of the popular 2014 podcast “Serial,” is currently serving a life sentence in prison for the 1999 death of Hae Min Lee. Though he had been appealing the conviction, Marilyn’s highest court ruled last week to deny Syed a new trial, arguing that “there was not a significant or substantial possibility that the jury would have reached a different verdict.”
You can watch “The Case Against Adnan Syed” on HBO, or stream it online with a free one-week trial to HBO via Amazon.
While you wait for the remaining episodes to hit the air, we’ve rounded up five books that explore some of the most controversial true crime cases in recent memory.
