Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy was a huge deal in the publishing world. The books kicked off with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". When a book series generates as much heat as this one, the movies come calling. Sure enough, the entire original trilogy was adapted into three films in Sweden. Later, Hollywood took a stab at it, too, with English-language adaptations, but we'll get to those later. First, though, let's talk about the original trilogy and the correct order to watch it.

A TV adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series is moving further into development at Prime Video, our sister publication Variety reports, with Veena Sud (The Killing) joining the project as showrunner.
If this sounds a little familiar, that’s probably because news of Prime Video’s adaptation was first reported back in 2020; this is the first update we’ve received since then.

If you don’t have the memory of a goldfish (like me), you might remember that Amazon was developing a TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That was over three years ago, and Variety has now reported that they’ve finally snagged a showrunner for the series.
Veena Sud, best known for developing The Killing for AMC, is set to serve as showrunner on Amazon’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Current details regarding the series are being kept under wraps, but it was originally reported that the project would not be a sequel or continuation of the story from the books or films, but would instead place Lisbeth Salander in today’s world with a new setting, new characters, and new story. Amazon MGM Studios will produce the series with Left Bank Pictures.

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series currently in the works at Amazon MGM Studios has found its showrunner.
Variety has learned exclusively that Veena Sud will head up the series, which will be set in the world of the so-called Millennium novels originally written by Stieg Larsson.
Variety previously reported that the series was in development in May 2020, though no showrunner was attached at that time. It was originally reported to be a new standalone story about one of the novels’ main characters, Lisbeth Salander, but current plot details remain under wraps. Amazon MGM Studios will produce along with Left Bank Pictures, which is based at Sony Pictures Television.
Sud is no stranger dark crime and mystery dramas. She is best known for developing the series “The Killing,” which was based on the Danish series “Forbrydelsen.” She also served as executive producer and showrunner on that series. The show...

Jens Sjögren’s sympathetic film avoids the cliched sport movie formula of triumph over adversity by focusing on what happens off the pitch
That’s Zlatan as in Zlatan Ibrahimović, the superstar Swedish striker whose troubled childhood in a tough working-class neighbourhood of Malmö is dramatised here. The cocky underprivileged kid saved from (possibly) a life of crime by football; it sounds like the cheesiest sports movie ever. And yet director Jens Sjögren, more interested in what happens off the pitch, dodges the dull cliches. His sympathetic, realist film is a compelling watch.
The film is based on Ibrahimović’s autobiography, co-authored with the Swedish writer David Lagercrantz. Dominic Andersson Bajraktati plays 11-year-old Zlatan, who is disruptive in school and bad-tempered on the pitch. What soon becomes clear is that all this behaviour is the communication of a kid who feels inadequate, alone and often hungry. He’s playing football...

Lisbeth Salander is taking a break from the big screen and planning a move to television in a new original series centered around the breakout character from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book trilogy (via Variety). The literary franchise includes “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.” The original series is being set up at Amazon under the title “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” but the show will not be an adaptation of the Larsson novel and will “instead take Salander and place her in today’s world with a wholly new setting, new characters, and a new story.”
The “Dragon Tattoo” Amazon series is being produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Left Bank Pictures founder and CEO Andy Harries will executive produce alongside Rob Bullock. Larsson’s book series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

There’s a feeling you get, sort of like a low-grade fever, when a film franchise is starting to run down. It’s had three or four sequels, it’s going through the motions, there’s no more fresh terrain left to plow. That sensation hovers, like a gray cloud, over “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” a movie that takes the feminist-hellion mystique of the haunted goth hacker Lisbeth Salander and combines it with a plot — about stopping a computer file with nuclear codes from falling into the wrong hands — that might have come out of a “Die Hard” chapter from the early ’90s. Is it any wonder that the movie is watchable, but that the thrill is gone?
The strange thing is, it’s only the second entry in the Hollywood version of the “Dragon Tattoo” series. So there’s no reason for it to feel this worn out.

Adapted from the fourth novel of the best-selling “Millennium” series — which David Lagercrantz continued after the death of original author Stieg Larsson — Fede Álvarez’s “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” is technically a (distant) sequel to David Fincher’s 2011 thriller, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” In reality, however, this new movie is nothing less (and nothing more) than a bonafide franchise reboot, as far removed from Fincher’s movie as Fincher’s movie was from the trilogy of Swedish films that director Niels Arden Oplev first made from Larsson’s books.
To recap: There are now three distinct film versions of hacker Lisbeth Salander, and “The Girl in the Spider Web” is her fifth on-screen adventure. In Oplev’s triptych, the feminist vigilante was played by “Prometheus” actress Noomi Rapace. In Fincher’s one and only stab at the series, she was recast with Rooney Mara. Now,...

It’s never too early to cash in on a little Yuletide spirit.
Universal and Illumination are seeing green as “The Grinch” anticipates to earn between $55 million to $65 million when it launches on 4,140 screens. The animated comedy is expected to dominate over “The Girl In the Spider’s Web” and “Overlord,” the two other wide releases hitting theaters this weekend.
In the adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss tale, Benedict Cumberbatch voices the animated grouch who loathes Christmas. The voice cast also includes Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Angela Lansbury, and Pharrell Williams. Frequent Illumination collaborator Yarrow Cheney took on directing duties with Scott Mosier.
“The Grinch” is the second Dr. Seuss story that Illumination, the studio behind “Despicable Me,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” and “Sing,” has brought to the big screen. In 2012, the animators produced “The Lorax,” which launched with $70 million and went on to pick up over $348 million globally.

Before stepping into Lisbeth Salander’s shoes for “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” Claire Foy didn’t watch any of the previous films, which starred Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. “I didn’t watch them ahead,” the Golden Globe winner told Variety on Sunday at the NYC screening of the movie. “I think that would have been quite a cruel thing to do to myself.”
While she purposely avoided seeing any of the films in the franchise, she did dive deep into the books by Stieg Larsson and David Lagercrantz, which the movies are based upon. “The books were my bible, and I think for Noomi and Rooney as well, they were. So that was all I did really was go back to the books,” Foy explained.

Claire Foy is a credible Lisbeth Salander, but The Girl in the Spider's Web waters her down in bland action movie cliché.
The return of Lisbeth Salander to the big screen should be a big deal. As one of the most fascinating heroines to come out of literature in this century, Stieg Larsson’s avenging goth angel took millions of readers by storm, and then by heartache, as Larsson’s death prevented the plan to continue her adventures for years to come. Yet in Hollywood, the girl with the dragon tattoo remains an elusive figure. David Fincher’s vision and Rooney Mara’s magnetism couldn’t quite turn her into a global franchise for adults, and now The Girl in the Spider’s Web is content to simply reimagine her as something jejune and small: it turns her into a superhero.
This too is the wrong impulse.

David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the American adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s 2005 bestseller, was most successful as a mood piece, one that provided brooding, wintry surfaces masquerading the impression of depth. Though aided by a compelling turn from Rooney Mara, who transcended the atmospherics by imbuing protagonist Lisbeth Salander with deadpan fury, Dragon Tattoo was hobbled by the source material’s exposition-laden mystery narrative, which was unable to absorb on its own accord even with the best procedural director currently working in Hollywood behind the camera. Fincher makes the film watchable because he excels at elevating this type of work, but sometimes the work remains the work.
Yet, much of the film’s visual language—Salander’s characterization, gray Swedish exteriors, feminist-driven vigilante justice, casual sadism—have become effortlessly iconic in the interim. It’s no surprise that Hollywood would try to revamp the series and...

The world-famous Swedish vigilante hacker Lisbeth Salander is back, and this time she’s saving the world from nuclear annihilation. It’s a bit of a shift for Salander; when last we saw her in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” she was solving serial murders and exacting painful revenge on abusive male accountants.
In Fede Alvarez’s “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” she’s stealing from the Nsa, surviving explosions in bathtubs and getting in a whole bunch of car chases. It’s like if “Goldfinger” was the sequel to “Psycho.” It may be undeniably cool to watch, but it’s hard to deny that it’s a tonal Crazy Ivan.
It’s been three years since Lisbeth Salander last worked with journalist Mikael Blomkvist. She’s been using her mad hacking skills to punish abusive husbands, but she’s still got a day job, and when...

Lisbeth Salander is no longer anonymous. Much as the secretive hacker would like to stay out of the spotlight, the latest on-screen incarnation of Stieg Larsson’s franchise-spawning literary anti-heroine opens with Lisbeth (Claire Foy) enacting her own kind of revenge on a badly behaved man, only for a local news outlet to instantly pin the nefarious deed on her. And yet, in this on-screen incarnation of the series — the third version to hit theaters, the fifth film total — it’s one of many changes made to the girl with the dragon tattoo, who has evolved beyond dead-eyed computer whiz into a slightly more emotional warrior with a real flair for punishing baddies.
Even better, she’s now played by Emmy-winner Foy, who turns in the best on-screen depiction of Lisbeth yet, facing down stiff competition from both original Swedish star Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara.

It was probably inevitable that Hollywood would neuter the best elements of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” franchise, but did the producers really need to shift it into a commonplace cross between a superhero flick and James Bond? David Fincher’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” tried hard to balance the Swedish films’ sensitivity to protagonist Lisbeth Salander’s severe psychological trauma with broad box office appeal, but “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” — based on the novel by Larsson’s successor David Lagercrantz — is more vested in fiery external explosions than internal pain, reducing Salander to a quirky Batgirl-like figure, soft-pedaling her feminism, practically eliminating her queerness, and tossing in an American so the U.S. can save the world. Director Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) delivers some big-bang thrills in a slick production that will do hefty business, but for Salander fans, this entry feels like a betrayal.

The adventures of Lisbeth Salander, the intrepid punk-goth hacker made famous in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, continue in The Girl in the Spider's Web. The filmmakers take a heroic, action-packed, high-tech approach that empties out some of the originality of this unique female heroine, while pointing the movie at a rather different kind of audience from the first trio of Swedish movies and David Fincher’s 2011 remake The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It is based on the book by David Lagercrantz that continues the series after Larsson's death.

October has proven to be a surprisingly solid month at the box office, and November releases “The Grinch” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” hope to keep the end of the year going strong.
Universal and Illumination are getting in on the holiday spirit early when “The Grinch” opens on Nov. 9. Early tracking shows the animated family film, based on Dr. Seuss’ classic Christmas tale, is heading for a start between $50 million and $60 million.
This is the third Grinch adaptation following the 1966 TV special and the 2000 feature with Jim Carrey. Carrey’s take on “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” bowed with $55 million and is still the second-highest grossing holiday movie of all time with $345 million worldwide.
Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier directed the newest version, which has Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the green grouch who threatens to destroy Christmas. The voice cast also includes Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and Angela Lansbury.

The last time American viewers saw Swedish hacker Lisbeth Salander on the big screen, it was 2011, when the English-language remake of the Swedish film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. The movie was produced by the Sony-owned Columbia Pictures, the company that owns the rights to Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy of books and the subsequent books in that universe authored after Larsson's 2004 death. For fans of the 2011 film, Mara was the perfect Lisbeth - so the announcement in 2017 that the series would be recast with The Crown's Claire Foy was met with some puzzlement. Before the new film, The Girl in the Spider's Web, debuts in November, here's as much of the story as we know.
Larsson's Millennium Trilogy was originally adapted into a Swedish-language film trilogy starring Noomi Rapace; the 2011 film was an English-language remake of the first in that trilogy.

“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” heroine Lisbeth Salander isn’t just a near-superhero with a hidden identity and cool gadgets who helps others. She’s also the survivor of abuse, and because it comes out in the midst of the #MeToo movement, the film feels especially timely.
But Claire Foy doesn’t see Salander as a face of #MeToo, which she says represents something far bigger.
“No!” Foy told press at the footage presentation of the film at Sony Pictures on Tuesday. “We were doing prep while it was all going on, and I took great solace in the fact that the movie wasn’t jumping on what would be seen a bandwagon. The interest in Lisbeth has always been there, I think everyone is going to be deeply fascinated by her, and much like the #MeToo movement, it’s not because it’s timely — it’s always been there is the reality.

Watch Claire Foy’s Badass Take on Lisbeth Salander in New ‘Girl in the Spider’s Web’ Trailer (Video)
Claire Foy has traded her royal duds for a decidedly more goth look in the explosive new trailer for “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
“The Crown” star’s take on tattooed goth hacker Lisbeth Salander is decidedly edgier than her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II — complete with some high-voltage action and what looks like a romantic same-sex kiss late in the clip.
The new trailer also offers more details about the plot, including a deadly sibling rivalry between Lisbeth and her long-estranged sister Camilla (Sylvia Hoeks). Director Fede Alvarez’s film also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Stephen Merchant, Claes Bang, Christopher Convery, Synnøve Macody Lund and Vicky Krieps.

Claire Foy is unstoppable this fall. In addition to earning her second Emmy nomination for lead actress in a drama thanks to her Netflix royal drama “The Crown,” Foy is starring in two of the fall season’s most anticipated titles: “First Man” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” The latter finds the actress taking over a role made famous in the U.S. by Rooney Mara.

Sony Pictures have released the first trailer for ‘The Girl In the Spider’s Web‘, the latest cinematic iteration of author Steig Larson‘s Millennium saga. The reboot sees Claire Foy taking over the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander, with ‘Evil Dead‘ (3013) and ‘Don’t Breathe‘ helmer Fede Alvarez stepping into the director’s chair this time around. Although plot details are being kept under pretty tight wraps a this point, the film follows Salander and Blomkvist years after the events of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘ as the two re-unite to uncover a new mystery from their own past.
The last time that we saw the character brought to the big screen was with David Fincher‘s 2011 big-budget remake of Larson’s original ‘Dragon Tattoo’ novel, but this trailer seems to be trying to differentiate itself from that film as much as possible, which is probably a good thing.
