People often don’t truly and intimately know even those they consider to be their closest friends until they make an unexpected tragic decision that painfully changes their outlook on life and their relationships. While they should have foreseen the heartbreaking choice the person made, particularly since their actions played a part in their judgment, the distressing result can often times be the only way people can reconnect and improve their bonds. This is certainly the case in the independent drama, ‘About Alex,’ which marks the feature film writing and directorial debuts of filmmaker Jesse Zwick. ‘About Alex’ follows the title character (Jason Ritter), a depressed and emotionally lost 20-something who [ Read More ]

Taking its inspiration from The Big Chill, About Alex is a new ensemble drama from director Jesse Zwick that tells the story of a group of high school friends who reunite one weekend after one of them tries to commit suicide. A strong cast and some sharp writing from the first time filmmaker turn what could have been a melodramatic story into something that really resonates, thanks to the big, beating heart that’s at the centre of it.
Our very own Isaac Feldberg reviewed the film last week, and gave it 4/5 stars and saying:
It’s extremely easy to forgive an imperfect movie for its flaws when, like About Alex, it showcases a big, beating heart that is clearly in the right place.
Last week, I had the chance to sit down for an exclusive interview with the cast of the film while they were attending the La press day.

Still the Chill: Zwick Assembles Fine Cast for Routine Exercise
Jesse Zwick, son of director Edward Zwick, has amassed a fine cast of young actors for a revamp of what will inevitably compared to Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill (1983), where a reunion of old friends transpires over the death (in this case, near death) of one of their old group members. While Kasdan’s film represents the pinnacle of this dramatic formula, there have been plenty of films since then that benefit greatly from its influence. A glossy, less dire example would be the more recent Channing Tatum headlined 10 Years (2011), while Guillaume Canet gets dibs for the best thing since Kasdan with his 2010 Little White Lies. With About Alex, Zwick has a written a smartly observed treatment to define the trials and travails of a new generation of quickly aging twentysomethings, a group of young adults already greatly at...

If you’re a child of the 80s, like myself, then your know all about what makes a good movie about friends. No, forget that Friends TV show and its unrealistic sitcom stereotypes. I’m talking about films like the 1985 classics The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’S Fire, or Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982) or even Revenge Of The Nerds (1984). We knew what friends on film were all about in the 80s, but whatever happened to that great emotionally-driven, sentimental sub-genre of dramatic comedies?
I have the answer… thank god for filmmaking dynasties. In the tradition of great directors passing the torch to their children, award-winning director Edward Zwick has clearly fostered promising talent in his son Jesse Zwick, whose feature film debut About Alex manages to instill a renewed sense of sentimentality into the friendship dramedy genre. Review: 'Big Chill'-Esque 'About Alex' Starring Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield, Max Minghella And More
Every generation needs a couple of reunion movies, and in “About Alex" we have another one. First-time writer-director Jesse Zwick doesn't so much swing for the fences as attempt to dribble a single down the baseline. This comedy-drama doesn't reach any untold heights, but with formula pictures like this, you can only hope the company is pleasant. With this cast, those meager expectations are reached. Jason Ritter is Alex, who we greet just as he's tweeting about his impending suicide attempt. News of his ultimately failed attempt circulates, from one phone call to another, before a troupe of handsome character actors find themselves sequestered in Alex's rustic cabin in the countryside. It's very much like “The Big Chill” in how these character represent a specific generation, willingly ready to discuss and dissect their own shortcomings. And then Alex returns home, and he's basically a ghost to these people, as they...

“You know what this is like – this is like one of those ’80s movies.” No one could accuse writer-director Jesse Zwick of being absent-minded in putting together About Alex; this is one indie that wears its main inspiration - The Big Chill – on its sleeve, like a beloved accessory. Luckily, Zwick’s knack for naturalistic dialogue, coupled with his easily charming cast, is more than enough to make up for the film’s lack of originality. While it covers familiar ground, About Alex still feels decidedly comfortable and easy to slip into.
A big part of the movie’s relaxed charm is its cast, culled from some of network TV’s best and most zeitgeisty shows. With Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Jason Ritter (Parenthood), Max Greenfield (New Girl) and Jane Levy (the late, lamented Suburgatory) all in the cast, it’s almost tricky to view About Alex as its...

About Alex Review
Writer/Director Jesse Zwick’s About Alex involves suicide and a group of friends hanging around a house, so there’s no way to avoid comparisons to The Big Chill, but I’m reminded far more of any number of indie films, especially 2010′s Helena from the Wedding, which doesn’t involve suicide, but focuses on a rather similar group of friends hanging around a house. On the other hand, most everything I would say in reviewing The Big Chill, I would also say about About Alex, and that’s a hell of an endorsement already.
Before even getting to the film, there’s a danger with this effort such that audiences may be prone to finding the cast the most interesting thing about it. The titular Alex is played by Jason Ritter, and his college friends who rally around him after he attempts suicide are: Aubrey Plaza,...

Featuring an ensemble cast of Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly, and JoBeth Williams, it was about a group of baby boomer college friends who reunite after fifteen years due to the suicide of a friend.

We've been seeing a lot of nostalgia over the summer of 1984 lately, but let's look back a little farther to the fall of 1983, when The Big Chill hit theaters and promptly won hearts. This ensemble drama, about a batch of old college friends who confront their current dilemmas together after attending the funeral of one of their own, is clearly the inspiration for the upcoming dramedy About Alex. And you can see it all over its new trailer. As quoted above, "The Big Chill for Millennials, complete with star-stuffed ensemble," was actually how I described About Alex following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. The bittersweet movie marks the directorial debut of its screenwriter, Jesse Zwick, who is following in the footsteps of his Academy Award-winning father Ed Zwick, producer of Shakespeare In Love and director of movies like About Last Night. (1986), Courage Under Fire,...

Fans have come to love Aubrey Plaza and Max Greenfield in TV series "Parks & Recreation" and "New Girl" respectively, and now they're together in what looks like spectacular little indie drama. As the trailer praise indicates, About Alex looks like The Big Chill for a new generation. After one of a circle of friends attempts to commit suicide, the whole crew reunites to show their support. However, the reunion also digs up plenty from the past like former romance between Plaza and Max Minghella (The Social Network). We hadn't even heard of this movie until today, but now we're very excited to see it later this summer. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Jesse Zwick's About Alex, originally from Apple: About Alex is written and directed by Jesse Zwick ("Parenthood"). The film follows a circle of twenty-something friends who reunite for a weekend away after one of them suffers a breakdown.

With a cast that includes Aubrey Plaza, Jane Levy, Max Greenfield, Nate Parker, Max Minghella, Jason Ritter and Maggie Grace, indie dramedy About Alex is already high on my list of movies to see. That talented ensemble features some of the hottest young actors and actresses working on the small screen today. In particular, Plaza, who broke out on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, has impressed in almost every big-screen vehicle she’s had for her deadpan talents thus far (I was in the minority who despised The To-Do List). Now, a first trailer for About Alex has arrived, highlighting the film’s tricky blend of serious drama and light-hearted laughs, as well as that strong cast.
Directed by first-time helmer Jesse Zwick, About Alex didn’t make much noise when it touched down at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, but I’m still interested to see it after this trailer.

We’ve had a few trailers arrive in the past couple weeks for movies involving comedians gathering for funerals, but what about comedians coming together to celebrate the failure of an attempted suicide? It would be remiss not to say that About Alex is the Big Chill that we’ve been missing from our generation’s film lineups, even though it’s a bit obvious to point it out; the trailer itself wastes no time in doing so, and the pull quotes carefully picked out to showcase the film’s best qualities mention it as well. But when you’ve got a group of young, twenty something friends heading up to a cabin to embrace each other warmly and love a friend who just nearly took his life…when it walks like a duck… About Alex, from director and writer Jesse Zwick, is a familiar story that seems to try its best to reinvent itself for the...

Every generation needs its own “Big Chill”-esque movie, right? That may have arrived in the new film “About Alex” starring the ensemble of Aubrey Plaza, Jane Levy, Max Greenfield, Nate Parker, Max Minghella, Jason Ritter and Maggie Grace. After the first trailer for the film has arrived to give you a sense of what you're in for with this one. The directorial debut of Jesse Zwick, this dramedy made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, where it didn't quite impress. Our Gabe Toro said it was "about too much and too little, a sandbox for its considerable cast, but ultimately just following the reunion rulebook." But again, that cast is pretty solid and perhaps you'll get more mileage out of it. Here’s the official synopsis: In About Alex, a circle of twenty-something friends reunite for a weekend away after one of them suffers an emotional breakdown.

People around the world, and the younger generation in particular, have used social media in recent years to allow those they’re connected with unrestricted access into their everyday, personal lives. But even the seemingly most unhindered insight into a person’s daily routine doesn’t always offer the most in-depth vision into their true feelings and motivations. That intimate exploration of how well friends really know each other, particularly with the public persona people often create on social media, is explored in first-time feature film writer-director Jesse Zwick’s new drama, About Alex.
About Alex, which recently had its world premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, follows a group of estranged college friends as they gather in a country home in the wake of the title character’s (Ritter) attempted suicide. The group sought out to help their friend after he alerted them of his intentions by posting a suicide note on Twitter.

For Jesse Zwick’s first feature film, he gathered together an ensemble of sitcom actors to tell a hilarious and heartfelt story about friendship (and social media). In About Alex, six somewhat estranged college friends (and a plus one) gather together for a weekend to “celebrate” the attempted suicide of their friend. Over the weekend, secrets and unrequited passions rear their ugly heads but push these great friends back together.

In the 1983 drama The Big Chill a group of estranged college friends converge on a country home in the wake of their friend Alex’s suicide and reflect on their pasts, futures, relationships, and evolving (or regressing) world views. Jason Ritter is Alex, whom we greet just as he's tweeting about his impending suicide attempt.

Our Tribeca coverage begins with Glenn on two similarly titled indies
Alex is in crisis in both About Alex and actor Chris Messina's directorial debut Alex in Venice. Both films are indie dramas about the complexities of modern relationships, though one is decidedly much better than the other. While both Alexes are broad-strokes comparable to similar films that have come before, Jesse Zwick’s About Alex has trouble feeling like anything more than a cheap imitation. Populated by a cast of predominantly TV actors (Maggie Grace, Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield, and Jason Ritter as Alex) and featuring a lot of nonsensical moments and illogical characters traits that could easily be the result of the first time feature writer and director’s inexperience, About Alex just doesn’t congeal into anything substantial. It lacks the generational pull of its most direct cinematic cousins, like Lawrence Kasdan’s Oscar-nominated 1983 classic The Big Chill...

In 2012, Jesse Zwick was a successful young journalist working for The New Republic, covering politics in Washington, DC. When he could find some off time from his hectic day job, however, he was working on a different kind of writing, churning out spec scripts and screenplays with his eye on heading west to Hollywood. One of those spec scripts ended up earning Zwick a staff job on NBC's “Parenthood,” and so he returned home to the West Coast and began to forge his own path in the family business; his dad is Oscar-winning director/producer, Edward Zwick. After a year.

New York — A crisis-reunion film that accepts its unoriginality and even takes some pleasure in acknowledging it, Jesse Zwick's About Alex gathers together a half-dozen thirtyish schoolmates for some bonding after one of them, Jason Ritter's title character, tries to kill himself. Unambitious but amiable, it benefits from the presence of familiar talents including Aubrey Plaza, many of whom have enough name-recognition value from series TV to increase chances reaching a non-fest audience. In a film that makes some half-hearted stabs at a critique of social-media addiction -- most via the group's resident fuddy-

“You know what this is like? This is like one of those eighties movies.” Jesse Zwick’s About Alex makes no bones about its apparent pedigree – the first-time filmmaker clearly pulled from a host of eighties features, especially the similarly themed The Big Chill for his debut, but he’s added a nice little twist to his work: no one is actually dead here. Instead, the group of college friends that make up the cast of About Alex are brought back together because someone is almost dead. (This actually makes quite a difference.) Reunited due to the attempted suicide of their pal Alex (Jason Ritter), the erstwhile group assemble at his house in upstate New York to welcome home a recently discharged Alex, find out what went wrong, and learn some stuff about themselves (and each other!) as the film unfolds over an appropriate ninety-six minute runtime. But although the premise of the film is clearly a...

Title: About Alex Director: Jesse Zwick Cast: Maggie Grace, Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield, Jason Ritter, Jane Levy, Max Minghella, and Nate Parker Tribeca Film Festival 2014 We are now at a point in history where the Millennial Generation (people born between 1982 and 2004) is nostalgic about their youth. When post-post-college careers have become mind numbing and dull that the only cure from responsibility is a road trip or a weekend getaway. The movie “About Alex” should be re-titled “The Small Chill” or “The Big Chill: Millennial Edition” because it shares the same narrative thrust as Lawrence Kasdan’s 1983 film “The Big Chill,” only with one caveat: what if the [ Read More ]

One of our 20 Most Anticipated Films Of The Tribeca Film Festival, which kicks off today, "About Alex" already has us impressed by the cast director Jesse Zwick (son of Ed Zwick) has pulled together for his debut. Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield ("New Girl"), Maggie Grace, Nate Parker, Max Minghella, Jane Levy and Jason Ritter all feature in the ensemble dramedy, making it one to keep an eye on. Penned by Zwick as well, the "Big Chill"-esque tale follows seven college friends who reunite for a weekend of fun and togetherness after one of them suffers a breakdown, only to discover that as much as they've drifted apart in the intervening time, old jealousies, flirtations and political differences still flare up. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, just taking a picture starts a war of words. "About Alex" premieres on April 17th at Bmc Tribeca Pac. Watch below.

Who doesn't want to see more of Max Greenfield, Maggie Grace, and Aubrey Plaza? They all star in Jesse Zwick's directorial debut "About Alex," a comedy about seven college friends who reunite when one of their cadre suffers an emotional breakdown. This film has been a two-year journey for Zwick. Tell us about yourself: I'm a journalist-turned-filmmaker who finally worked up the courage to quit my day job and put together this movie about two years ago. I'm very excited to show the film to my friends back east as proof that I've been doing something out in La other than "taking meetings." Biggest challenge in completing the film? Convincing everyone involved that I had any idea what I was doing. I'm still not entirely sure how I got away with it. Did you crowdfund? We didn't crowdfund, but we did solicit and find funding from a variety of sources,...

Aubrey Plaza was terror-stricken when she arrived at the abandoned Catskills ski lodge that served as the set of her indie film About Alex — so much so that she became closer to her castmates than originally expected.
“I forced Jane to move in with me because I was terrified I would get murdered by some mountain person,” confesses Plaza, one of the lead characters in the film about a group of old college friends who reunite over a long weekend to bond after one of their pals attempts suicide. “I felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, and it was totally creepy.

Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.
