In what feels like the longest Droughtlander of them all, Starz revealed Thursday that its hit series Outlander will return with Season 7, Part 2 in November.
Season 7 is an extra-large extended season with 16 episodes split into two parts. The release of Part 2 was delayed about a year due to the writers and actors strikes. To catch up before then, every season, including Season 7, Part 1, is currently available to stream via the Starz app.
Inspired by Diana Gabaldon’s international bestsellers, Outlander follows Claire (Caitríona Balfe), a married former World War II nurse who in 1946 finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743. Claire finds her true love was living in the past, dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). It’s been a tumultuous time for the Frasers and the MacKenzies in Outlander season seven, with Roger (Richard Rankin) and Bree’s (Sophie Skelton) son kidnapped in the 1980s, and the American Revolutionary War beginning back in the 18th century, where Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) struggle to stay alive amid mounting violence.
The seventh episode of season seven, “A Practical Guide For Time-Travelers”, leaves us with a shocking cliffhanger after Jamie faces the British forces in battle, with his illegitimate son William (Charles Vandervaart) fighting for the British during the First Battle of Saratoga. In the final shot of the episode, we see Jamie lying on the battlefield, covered in blood and seemingly dead, but what do Diana Gabaldon’s books tell us about Jamie’s fate? And what happens to Jamie’s family after these events transpire?

Once again, we've got two entirely different stories at play, threaded together by Claire's letter, written her present and in Brianna's past.
Another tie that binds them both is how the family is in grave danger -- Brianna's family due to the nefarious Rob Cameron and Claire's due to the wages of war.
Outlander Season 7 Episode 7 sets up the midseason finale with aching realities that we know will carry well into the second half of the season.
Let's start with the good. Roger MacKenzie and his great great great (many greats) Grandda put the past behind them and started fresh.
There's something about time travel that allows for bygones being bygones.
Buc stumbled through the stones in much the same way that Claire did, at least according to him.
I'm inclined to believe him because of the fascination he had with the present and the gusto with which he...

In the seventh season of the popular Starz series Outlander, time travel is once again a big plot device that separates the Fraser family across the centuries, and this time it’s Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) who are in “the future” with their children Jem and Mandy, while Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) are still in the past, facing the onset of the American Revolutionary War. In the latest episode of the show, “Singapore”, Brianna is having a hard time at her new engineering job, where she faces misogyny from her male co-workers. Starz’s Outlander season seven episode four opens with a short time jump to Lallybroch in 1980. Two years have passed since Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) purchased the property, and the family’s living in a mobile home in the front yard while it’s being repaired. Jemmy and Mandy have reached the fighting siblings stage, and Mandy hits her older brother with a stick. Mandy only grudgingly says she’s sorry.
It’s revealed Bree and Roger won’t let the workers paint over the dining room murals or fix a large spot on the wall. There’s still so much work to be done that the estimate’s jumped up to what Bree describes as an “astronomical” figure. They’re halfway through their money and not even close to having bedrooms at this point.

Bree and Roger MacKenzie (Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin) are living happily ever after in 20th Century Scotland In the latest Inside Outlander aftershow, we talked with the actors about Episode 3, which featured the welcome delivery of a box of centuries-old letters from Bree’s parents Claire and Jamie (Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan) chronicling what happened after the MacKenzies left the 1700s and traveled through the stones. “The more [Bree] reads the letters, to live the life through them — it’s a rebirth of her parents,” Skelton says. “It’s wonderful because it feels like a parallel timeline as well. It’s not like you lose a parent and read their diary; it feels like these letters are coming in tandem rather [than from] the grave. It’s really emotional to Bree.” The couple also discuss when (if ever) to tell their son Jemmy about his past and ability to time ...

The opening scene of Starz’s Outlander season seven episode three shows a delivery man dropping off a chest with the name Jeremiah Alexander Ian Fraser MacKenzie emblazoned on the lid. We’re left hanging for just a moment as “The Skye Boat Song” plays, and then it’s revealed that the chest has been kept in a bank vault for 200 years.
It’s presented to Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) who, by the way, look terrific in ‘80s attire and new hairstyles. After revealing that Mandy’s doing great, Fiona Graham Buchan (Iona Claire) – who’s happy to have them back – gives them time alone to open the chest. Inside are a musket ball and scores of letters written to Brianna from Jamie and Claire.
The first letter she opens is dated April 1776, and Jamie assures her they’re alive.

This week’s Outlander episode, “The Happiest Place on Earth”, covers a lot of ground in terms of action and character development. The extended cold open closes the chapter on the Christie family saga, which allows the remaining part of the episode to set up re-introducing William Ransom as a young man who will have his own story, as well as setting up the main obstacle for Brianna and Roger to overcome this season.
After Tom Christie’s death, Alan reveals to Claire that he was the one who killed Malva. He was motivated by jealousy that Malva was trying to break off their incestuous relationship and her failure to get child support cash out of Jamie. Ian believes Alan is about to attack Claire, so he shoots him dead with an arrow. Claire feels guilty, but a passer-by tells her Alan deserved it for his actions.

Our hearts broke for Jamie Fraser, played subtly and sensitively by Sam Heughan, in Outlander‘s second episode of Season 7, which often touched on the powerful Scottish Highland warrior’s vulnerable side as he suffered loss after loss. We spoke to the actor about the emotional events in our latest installment of the aftershow, Inside Outlander. “He’s having to say goodbye to John Grey [David Berry]; to his daughter [Bree, played by Sophie Skelton]; to his grandchildren. He’s losing a lot and I think that cumulatively wounds him. We always thought Jamie has great fortitude and great strength, but it does have a toll,” Heughan tells us. Check out the video above, where the actor reflects on the farewells; poor Jamie had to endure not one but two goodbyes to Bree, including her and husband Roger’s (Richard Rankin) departure through the stones to get medical treatment for their new baby in the 20th Century.

Time to flip the “Number of Episodes Since Outlander Made Me Cry” counter back to zero.
If you read our site with any regularity, you know that I’m a devotee of the books from way back, and I’ve written about Starz’s adaptation since before it aired its first episode. I’m an Oldlander through and through: I love Claire and Jamie Fraser more than any adult should probably care about fictional characters.
