ListicleOf the many interesting women characters of south Indian cinema who graced our screens this year, here are our favourites.Sowmya RajendranThe year 2022 was when cinema bounced back to some semblance of what it used to be before the pandemic struck the world. There were many blockbusters from the south Indian film industries, and quite a few of them had interesting women characters as well. This was a welcome change in a male-dominated field, where most films are hero-centric and mass entertainers have seldom had memorable women characters. Quite a few small budget films this year too had impressive women characters, who broke onscreen conventions and surprised us. Here are our favourite women characters from southern cinema this year: Gargi from Gargi (Tamil) Gautham Ramachandran’s hard-hitting courtroom drama is about a young woman whose father is accused of sexually assaulting a minor. Film commentaryThe film, directed by Gautham Ramachandran, follows the story of Sai Pallavi as Gargi, a schoolteacher.Geetika MantriScreengrabThis piece is not a review and contains spoilers. If you haven't watched the film and don't like to read spoilers before watching, please don't read ahead. An endearing, wrinkled face and drooping shoulders on a small frame of a man, whose backstory has enough meat to make you want to root for him. Brahmananda has all the makings of a likeable, kindly old fellow. A father to two young daughters, one of them of school-going age, he works as a security guard at a residential building. It helps that his elder daughter – a schoolteacher named Gargi – is convinced that her father is being wrongly framed in a gang sexual assault of a nine-year-old child at the building, and is doing everything in her power to clear his name. Her agony, complete...

ReviewIt is the many assumptions we make when we watch courtroom dramas that director Gautham uses to his advantage.Sowmya RajendranScreengrabIt’s difficult to write a review for a film that leaves your hands shaking. As Gargi comes to an end, the heartbeat you hear echoing from the screen merges with your own. It’s the shock of finding a film that resonates so strongly with all that you have known and experienced, growing up in a female body. An acknowledgement that cinema rarely gives. Gargi is an unusual name. It’s not explained in the film, but it’s the name of a philosopher who is mentioned in vedic texts. A woman who was the daughter of a sage, a fierce debater whose intellect was second to none. She’s often hailed as an early feminist icon, and it’s not a coincidence that this is the name of the film’s protagonist.

Gautham Ramachandran's Richie begins with the visual of a game of seven stones. What happens one day when the game spirals out of control and life changes forever for two boys, in a moment of rage and ensuing confusion?
The game is a metaphor for how things pan out for the characters in the film. There's one group which is always trying to build (their dreams, their lives), and another trying to bring it all crashing down.
