Channing Tatum takes on the role of a tech billionaire who lures people to his private island in the trailer for Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut.
The lengthy look at the film begins with Tatum’s Slater King announcing amusingly that everyone’s dead and then backtracking to start at the beginning. In the flashback, he introduces his posse of friends to Naomi Ackie’s Frida before inviting her and her friend Jess, portrayed by Alia Shawkat, to his private island.
“Did we just jet off to a billionaire’s island with a bunch of strangers?” Jess asks Frida, who replies, “No, he’s not a stranger. He’s Slater King.”
Over the course of the trailer, the ladies relish in the luxuries of Slater King’s life, like champagne and amazing food, while Jess jokes that there will be human sacrifice. As more time goes by, the...

In what will surely come as a huge shock to the general public and cause no small number of monocles to pop out, Amazon MGM Studios has elected to retitle Zoë Kravitz's feature directing debut, which was previously going under the not-at-all provocative moniker "Pussy Island." Kravitz's film will instead be released as "Blink Twice," which for me conjures memories of David Tennant's 10th Doctor desperately warning Carey Mulligan not to blink around the Weeping Angels in the classic modern "Doctor Who" episode "Blink."
That association isn't entirely inappropriate, either. "Blink Twice," like "Blink," is a potpourri of horror, mystery-thriller, and humor with an English actor at its core. In this case, it's Naomi Ackie of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and "Master of None" season 3 fame starring as a young woman who accompanies a tech billionaire -- played by Kravitz's current real-life significant other,...

By now, movies should surely have taught us all that going to remote tropical paradises with mysterious billionaires should be right up there on the travel danger list with, say, flying Ryanair. Yet still people keep accepting those invitations. And we suppose when the person doing the asking is Channing Tatum in full Chanrisma mode, it's hard to turn it down, but Naomi Ackie finds that out to her cost in the first trailer for Blink Twice, which you can find below…
With Zoë Kravitz making her directorial debut here, the film finds Ackie as cocktail waitress Frida, who meets tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum). There's an instant connection and soon he's whisking her and her best pal Jess (Alia Shawkat) away to his private island to party with his loopy trustafarian friends.
Initially, it all seems wonderful — sun soaked days, party-filled nights. But then strange things start to happen.

It helps to have friends. Look no further than the first trailer for Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice, which boasts a stronger ensemble than your average directing debut: Channing Tatum, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Alia Shawkat, Christian Slater, Geena Davis, and a last-second appearance from Kyle MacLachlan. The cast is led by Naomi Ackie, and ahead of an August 23 release there’s a first, LCD Soundsystem-punctuated trailer that suggests she did well hiring Adam Newport-Berra.

When actor Glen Powell learned about the real-life Gary Johnson, who inspired the Netflix film “Hit Man,” he thought, “This is a really compelling character. There’s a lot to unpack here.” And when considering who might direct it, “There’s nobody better [than Richard Linklater] with character or story and somebody who can add authenticity. When you look at a guy that’s as complicated as Gary Johnson, I think there’s very few filmmakers that can ground somebody who contains so many multitudes.” Powell talked with actress Rachel Brosnahan about the film during a Q&a following a special April 17 screening of the film in New York City. The film will be released in theaters on May 24, followed by its Netflix premiere on June 7.

Netflix on Thursday dropped a new trailer for the new Richard Linklater-directed feature “Hit Man,” co-written by and starring Glen Powell. Linklater and Skip Hollandsworth – the journalist upon whose Texas Monthly article the film – also contributed to the script that follows a straitlaced professor who moonlights as a fake hit man for his city police department. “He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignited a powder-keg of deception, delight and mixed-up identities.” Adria Arjona stars alongside Powell. Glen Powell and Richard Linklater may be long-time collaborators and friends — and now, with the imminent release of their “Hit Man,” credited co-writers — but these two can still surprise each other.
Case in point: for the fact-based and very fun “Hit Man,” Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a seemingly regular dude who ends up moonlighting for the New Orleans Police Department as a fake assassin, tasked with snagging people who are attempting to employ a hitman to off certain people in their lives. The film, based on a Texas Monthly story, follows Gary as he tries on all sorts of personas — redneck hitman, Russian hitman, the list goes on and on — while also romancing a potential client (Adria Arjona) under the guise of smooth-talking hitman Ron. But all those other personas? Powell-original creations!

A fun trope of contract killers in movies is the stealthy way the assassin moves about in plain sight while under the guise of another person. This is the trope that Glen Powell‘s new Netflix film, Hit Man, plays on. Powell and Richard Linklater wrote the film, which was inspired by an unbelievable true story. Our own Chris Bumbray felt ecstatic about this movie in his film review from the Toronto International Film Festival, saying, “Notably, despite being a movie about killing, the film is pretty non-violent and charming. If there was ever a feel-good movie to be made about murder-for-hire, this is it.” You can read the rest of his review Here.
Netflix has just released the new trailer for the comedy. The synopsis of the film reads,
“A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits.

Netflix has shared the official trailer and poster for director Richard Linklater’s new romantic action comedy Hit Man, starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. The film will open in select theaters on Friday, May 24, and then will start streaming on Netflix on June 7.
Based on Skip Hollandsworth’s Texas Monthly article, Hit Man will be available to stream in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. The movie is rated R for language throughout, sexual content, and some violence.
Written by Linklater and Powell, the movie was inspired by an unbelievable true story: a straight-laced professor discovers he has a hidden talent as a fake hitman. He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.

"My name is Gary Johnson, and my simple question for you is: who is your hit man?" Netflix has unveiled the main official trailer Hit Man, the hugely loved new "hitman" comedy from Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater. This first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year, with a rapturous premiere where audiences went nuts for (read my full review). It also went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, London and Sundance. From the Oscar-nominated writer / director Richard Linklater, starring the great Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a "hit man" meets his match with a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Co-written by Linklater & Powell and inspired by a true story, it's a cleverly existential comedy about identity. Hit Man arrives on Netflix in June, hopefully with a proper theatrical debut first before it's streaming.

Netflix has unleashed a new trailer for the Richard Linklater and Glen Powell-written comedy ‘Hit Man.’
Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater’s sunlit neo-noir stars Glen Powell as strait-laced professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hitman for the New Orleans Police Department. Preternaturally gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona). As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas — the mysteriously sexy Ron — their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play-acting, deception, and escalating stakes.

What happens when a fake hit man blurs the lines between reality and fiction? The true story of a professor going undercover acts as a starting point for Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” (read our review). Its premise goes well beyond the events written about by Texas Monthly’s Skip Hollandsworth. Instead, the film takes a fictional journey into what could have happened between two people under different circumstances.

After much wait and anticipation, Netflix is gearing up to drop the hottest movie of the year, and one of their best acquisitions in a while — Richard Linklater's "Hit Man."
Not to be confused with either the "Hitman" game series or David Fincher's thrilling "The Killer," this was one of the biggest hits of the fall film festival circuit last year, premiering in Venice to great buzz and continuing to gather praise in Toronto, New York, and Sundance.
"Hit Man" is inspired by the true story of a nerdy part-time teacher who works undercover for the police as a contract killer in sting operations. It stars Adria Arjona and Glen Powell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Linklater. The film was praised for being a steamy hot dark comedy that showed Glen Powell was ready for superstardom.

There’s a perfect world in which Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, a through-and-through crowdpleaser suffused with wit and style, gets a theatrical release and is this summer’s runaway hit, fueling the fire for however many collaborations the director wants with Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. This is, instead, our horrible world wherein Netflix will give the film a small theatrical play starting May 24 before it comes to their service on June 7 like whatever gets left out at the buffet. Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

Two parallel but inevitably intersecting stories make up Italian-born director Marco Perego’s debut feature “The Absence of Eden,” a strikingly shot and superbly acted immigration drama. But for all its commendable on-screen elements, it’s the screenplay that Perego co-wrote with Rick Rapoza that falls short, traversing overly familiar and rather sordid tropes related to a divisive political issue. While the actors — led by Zoe Saldaña, who is also married to the director — give powerful portrayals that challenge the country’s anti-immigrant climate, but there’s little in the way of thematic novelty here.
New Ice Agent Shipp (Garrett Hedlund), whose estranged father often leaves voice messages he never hears, has just moved to an unnamed border town. Though Shipp’s decision to join this line of work doesn’t stem from a strong ideological stance, his partner and friend Dobbins (Chris Coy) tries to instill in him a dehumanizing “us against them” mentality.

Immigration has often been a topic that sparks strong emotions around the globe, and it is an especially hot topic this election season, particularly when you have a U.S. presidential candidate characterizing undocumented immigrants not as “human” but rather as “animals” and using phrases such as “they are poisoning the blood of our country” at campaign rallies. Now seems to be a perfect time for a powerful new film, The Absence of Eden, to perhaps help lower the temperature and show the human side of those trying to cross the border into a new and hopefully better life.
None other than Martin Scorsese has lent his name to this film by signing on as an executive producer, and it represents the first feature for artist and producer Marco Perego who also happens to be the husband of the film’s star Zoe Saldaña. Perego says it was all inspired...

Fine performances and powerful visuals only partially compensate for the inevitable air of familiarity that accompanies Marco Perego’s debut feature. Although the filmmaker provides his real-life spouse Zoe Saldaña with one of her best roles in a long while — it’s nice to see her get a respite from the numerous sci-fi and fantasy blockbuster franchises (Star Trek, Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy) to which she’s attached, not to mention free of alien make-up — The Absence of Eden spins a by-now sadly familiar story of the human suffering engendered by the border crisis.
Saldaña plays Esmee, a Mexican private dancer who is forced to flee her country after she shoots and kills a client who attempts to assault her while she’s performing a lap dance.
