Just as audiences may have finally finished cleaning off the blood splatter from Ready or Not and the two most recent Scream films, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have returned to the big screen with Abigail. And staying true to what horror fans have come to expect from their previous efforts, Abigail is a high-octane, high-energy horror film that pulls no punches or fangs, making for another scary good time at the cinema.
After kidnapping a 12-year-old ballerina (Alisha Weir) from her wealthy father’s estate, a group of mysterious criminals heads to a secluded safehouse for the night. Intentionally anonymous to each other and hired by the enigmatic Lambert (Giancarlo Esposito), the kidnappers are each given an alias based on members of the Rat Pack: there’s former Army medic Joey (Melissa Barrera), the temperamental Frank (Dan Stevens), the tech-savvy Sammy (Kathryn Newton), the wheelman Dean (Angus Cloud...

Radio Silence Talk ‘Abigail,’ Their ‘Scream’ Exit and Trying to Make ‘The Shining’ Elevators Jealous
Abigail has been a long time coming for Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective consisting of co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin/Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella.
Coming off of their successful relaunch of the Scream franchise in 2022, the team strived to make another film before they returned to Ghostface. One idea was a feature now known as Abigail, but they ultimately ended up shooting Scream VI instead, as Scream rights holder Spyglass Media was eager to keep the momentum going. And together, they did just that, as Scream VI went on to set domestic box office records for the franchise.
Still, Abigail never left Radio Silence’s minds. As they were making Scream VI, the team was also preparing to do the ballerina vampire pic immediately after they finished promoting Scream VI’s March 2023 release. After all, they’d just put out two Scream movies within a 14-month period, so it’s...

The actress entered the Scream franchise as Sam Carpenter who has an intriguing connection to the original Scream film. She and Jenna Ortega played the Carpenter sisters and starred in both 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI.

Melissa Barrera feels like her 'Scream' character arc gave her "closure".The 33-year-old actress played Sam Carpenter - the daughter of 1996 'Scream' movie killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) - in 2022's 'Scream' and its sequel 'Scream VI, but she was fired from upcoming flick 'Scream 7' due to her publicly pro-Palestinian stance. Her character's story dealt with the idea of whether the connection to her father meant Sam was always meant to be a murderer, but she was seen throwing her father's mask onto the concrete below.Speaking to Collider's Perri Nemiroff for 'Ladies Night', she said: "I feel like I've gotten closure. My head is clear."She added: “I feel like the ending of [Scream VI ] was a very good ending, and so I don’t feel like 'Ugh, I got left in the middle.'"No,...

A lot of Scream franchise fans were hoping Melissa Barrera would reprise the role of Samantha Carpenter from Scream (2022) and Scream VI in a third Scream movie, and it has been said that the directors of those films, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, wanted to return for a Scream 7 that would wrap up the Sam Carpenter story as a trilogy. But that’s not how it worked out. The directors went off to make Abigail, and Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media weren’t willing to wait for them to circle back to Scream 7. So Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were, as they put it, “exited” from the project and it started moving forward without them… only to hit a series of speed bumps. Including the day when Barrera was fired after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. So there...

Ballerina vampire movie "Abigail" might be set in the Boston area, but it was filmed almost entirely on location in Dublin — once the home of "Dracula" author Bram Stoker. During a visit to the set of "Abigail" last year, I also visited the 300-year-old library frequented by Stoker, whose signature can still be seen in the visitor's book. Though the figure of the vampire existed in folklore before "Dracula," Stoker's version of the creature became the blueprint for the modern vampire in pop culture. Notably, the quirk of vampires having no reflection originated with Stoker's novel.
Dracula is also one of the original Universal Monsters, so when Universal returned to the vampire pool for "Abigail," star Melissa Barrera felt it was only appropriate to include a little nod to Stoker's novel. Though each member of the heist crew hired to kidnap little Abigail has a "rat pack" name to conceal...

Melissa Barrera was one of the first and most prominent actors to lose work for speaking out about the Israel-Hamas War when Spyglass Media dropped her from the “Scream” franchise over social media posts that were critical of the Israeli government and American media and expressed support for Palestinian people. Some, including Spyglass Media brass, believed the posts to be antisemitic. And so, after starring in two hit, franchise-reigniting “Scream” movies, Barrera was out, and would not be returning for “Scream 7.”
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barrera reflects on the fallout from her removal from the “Scream” franchise. While she’s open to someday playing survivor Sam Carpenter again, she’s not holding her breath. “I’ve learned to never say never, but also a lot of things would have to happen for Sam to come back,” Barrera said. “For now, next page, next chapter, and...

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. It was another high point in a career that was filling up with them. Melissa Barrera was in Dublin, finally back on set after a long actors strike and working on the horror feature Abigail, which reunited her with friends and frequent collaborators Radio Silence. The directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett brought Barrera to new levels of fame when they tapped her to lead the 2022 franchise reviver Scream, and she was looking forward to playing her role as Sam Carpenter for a third time down the road, with Freaky helmer Christopher Landon attached to direct. But then she got the call that would come to dominate the next few months of her life and make her the subject of intense scrutiny.

With spoilers, details have emerged about how Melissa Barrera was to be central to the ongoing Scream series, before her dismissal.
Warning: contains spoilers for some of the Scream films
The award for the most spectacular implosion that we’ve seen happen to a project in the past year undoubtedly goes to Spyglass Entertainment for Scream VII. Following two well-received entries that reignited an ageing series, Spyglass had that most valuable of Hollywood commodities in its possession: a franchise in the ascendancy.
Then came a string of bafflingly poor decisions: refusing to meet the price tag of series mainstay, Neve Campbell. Sacking Melissa Barrera, the new lead of the franchise for publicly expressing humanitarian ideals. Allowing Jenna Ortega, one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars to exit the series, with the timing of her departure making it appear as though she’d left in solidarity with Barrera.

The hits keep coming on Scream 7. Weeks after Melissa Barrera was let go from the upcoming sequel, followed close behind by news that Jenna Ortega also left, director Christopher Landon announced via Twitter today that he formally exited the project weeks ago.
The filmmaker said, “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

After being gone for more than a decade, Ghostface slayed again in Scream. And the fiend really did make a killing: at the box office, with fans, and with a majority of critics. Curiously, there is something comforting about seeing the same Edvard Munch-inspired Halloween mask and hearing the familiar voice of Roger L. Jackson hiss movie trivia through a landline. The film’s climax even revisited the suburban dream home turned nightmare from the original 1996 movie.

“Scream VI” marks a couple of firsts for the iconic slasher franchise. For one, it’s the first to take place in New York City, moving the horror action outside of California and letting Ghostface roam free on the streets of NYC. But for another, it will be the first “Scream” movie to be released in 3D. Call it the “Avatar” effect? Or, “Avatar: The Way of Water” effect?

As "Scream 6" looms near, the narratives around the first three "Scream" movies seem increasingly set in stone. Everyone loves the first movie, and people generally agree that "Scream 2" is a solid sequel. The fandom is a lot more divided on "Scream 3," though the consensus has grown more positive over time. Once you accept the different tone the third film's going for, most of its flaws are pretty easy to forgive.
Then there is 2022's "Scream," the fifth film in the franchise. It's rarely anyone's favorite, but most people don't seem to hate it much either. It's a solid entry, though most of its appeal is in the way it pushes the franchise in a new direction. When news broke that Neve Campbell won't portray Sidney for "Scream 6" due to contract disputes around inequitable pay, it felt like a sucker punch for the fans that grew up with the character famed for rewriting the rules of final girl engagement in horror. Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) first showed us that the archetype could do more than run and scream throughout the "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise (and especially in "Wes Craven's New Nightmare"). But Sidney revived the idea when slashers were dead-and-buried. (Any diehard "Scream" fan is likely already quoting Sid's infamously quippy line: "Not in my movie.") Understandably, it can be hard to let Sid go, as she lives some suburbia life with Detective Mark Kincaid and her children without the looming killer threat of Ghostface.
But we can forget that Campbell has already done more than most final girl characters in blockbuster slasher franchises. For 25 years,...

So not only is Ghostface a murderous, knife-wielding lunatic, but now he’s also an active contributor to the gentrification of New York City. In the first look trailer for Scream 6, hitting theaters March 10, the villain follows the franchise’s familiar cast of tormented characters to the city.
The four Woodsboro survivors — Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding), and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) — moved in hopes of starting over with a clean slate following the latest string of Woodsboro slaughters, but, as the film’s tagline reads,...

Let’s be honest, part of being a horror fan is dealing with disappointment. How many times have we been given an amazing trailer, something that promises wall-to-wall scares, only to have a lazy feature hoisted upon us? For every The Exorcist or Alien, movies that delivered on the promise of their shocking teasers, there’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark or It Chapter Two, cool trailers for disappointing movies.

May we all be as lucky to find ourselves someone as deeply committed as Ghostface. In one form or another, the masked menace of Woodsboro has haunted those poor residents — or, rather, one very specific group of residents — for a little over 25 years to this point. Clumsy, ineffectual, and borderline masochistic, the respective central antagonist(s) behind every "Scream" film has given our heroes a worthy enemy and a debilitating case of Ptsd, to go along with it. After this year's absurdly-titled "Scream" passed the torch from our original trio of Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers, and David Arquette's Dewey Riley (gone but never forgotten) to a new generation of protagonists, "Scream 6" will continue their story ... but with a very familiar face dogging their every step.
If you thought you were safe leaving the unfriendly confines of Woodsboro, think again. "Scream 6," aka "Scream VI,...

But can these two creative giants co-exist with such opposing views of life and art?

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Melissa Barrera admits she had some major issues to overcome while shooting her new Netflix series, “Keep Breathing.” The “In the Heights” star plays an attorney who is the only survivor after her small plane crashes into a lake in the frigid wilderness. “Diving into that water was probably one of the scariest things,” Barrera tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I have this real fear of drowning. So doing all of that was very therapeutic for me.”
Stunt coordinators gave her breathing exercises to do before diving in. “They would always tell me to take as many deep breaths as I needed until I felt ready,” Barrera recalls.
Like her character, Barrera is a city gal at heart: “I’m a person that enjoys having indoor plumbing and a shower and a toilet. And I don’t...

Fans who’ve been clamoring to see Hayden Panettiere return to the “Scream” franchise have gotten their wish.
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures announced Wednesday that Panettiere will appear in the upcoming sixth movie, reprising her role from 2011’s “Scream 4,” where she played Kirby Reed, a Woodsboro High School student and horror fanatic, who ultimately survived that movie’s Ghostface killer.
News of the fan-favorite character’s return comes after Spyglass and Paramount confirmed that four survivors from last year’s “Scream” would also return for the new movie. Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera star as sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter, respectively. Barrera’s character is revealed to be the biological daughter of Billy Loomis (the original “Scream” killer played by Skeet Ulrich). “When Wes (Craven) passed, I already said goodbye to it,” says original Scream franchise scribe Kevin Williamson today on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast.
However, when the Dimension Films IP was snapped up by Spyglass Media, conversations began to bubble up of a revival. Williamson had a meeting with Spyglass Boss Gary Barber, however, the project was set into motion when screenwriter James Vanderbilt gave the Scream architect a phone call. In short, the new blood on the project wanted Williamson involved, the scribe taking an EP credit on the Paramount co-production opening today.
You can listen to our conversation with Williamson below:
Interesting to note that Williamson originally pitched a Scream 5 and 6, however, those elements didn’t really get inserted into the new edition; one intriguing character in the “re-quel” being Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter who is a force to be reckoned with in the slasher series moving forward.

There's new blood in Woodsboro. Over two decades since the first Scream spawned a franchise and subsequent cult following, a fifth installment is on the way, introducing audiences to a fresh set of leads. And while several legacy cast members are returning, the upcoming relaunch, also titled Scream, will invariably mark a new chapter, as it's the first one not directed by genre legend Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Instead, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who previously directed Ready or Not, have stepped in.
The directors are not alone in their newness. Joining regulars like Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox are nine newcomers who will face off against whoever has slipped on the Ghostface mask this time. What's also notably different from when the franchise began in 1996 is that nearly each new actor now has a childhood or adolescent memory attached to the franchise and a deep reverence for it as a result,...
