CBS has released 44 seasons of Survivor since 2000, and with that many iterations of the reality competition series, some are bound to be flops. The producers are constantly trying new things, leading to massive success (re: hidden immunity idols), and others have been complete hits and misses (re: Edge of Extinction). But bad twists and themes aren’t the only contributors to the criteria of the show’s worst seasons; sometimes, a cast can lead to a season’s downfall. Read on for our five least favorite Survivor competitions.

Unlike Big Brother, showmances aren’t a regularity in Survivor. Whereas there is a Big Brother showmance almost every season, the contestants in the other CBS reality competition series aren’t too focused on finding love. However, sometimes, the Survivor castaways can’t deny a romantic connection, and they pursue a relationship on the show. And the last time a showmance formed in Survivor was in season 37, aka Survivor: David vs. Goliath.
Kara Kay and Dan Rengering | Photo by Robert Voets/CBS via Getty Images Kara and Dan had a brief showmance in ‘Survivor’ Season 37
At the beginning of Survivor Season 37, producers placed Kara Kay and Dan Rengering on the Goliath tribe. Kara, a 30-year-old from San Diego, CA, worked as a realtor, and Dan, a 28-year-old from Gainesville, Fl, worked as a Swat officer. And immediately, the two castaways hit it off.
In the first episode, Dan called Kara his “kryptonite.

Two of your favorite reality TV shows were hit with controversies recently, but the way the networks handled them were vastly different. On “Survivor” Season 39, a castaway named Dan Spilo was removed from CBS’s long-running competition series due to repeated instances of inappropriate touching. On “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 12, a queen known as Sherry Pie was disqualified from winning when VH1 discovered after the fact that she was a catfish who engaged in sexual misconduct.
In the case of “Survivor,” Dan’s story was still told from beginning to end when it aired last fall, up until the moment he was kicked to the curb off-camera. But on “Drag Race,” which is currently airing on Friday nights, Sherry Pie has been essentially edited out of every challenge, work room discussion and private one-on-one confessional. Why the different approaches?

Survivor: Island of the Idols may be over, but a new relationship is just beginning. Just one day after CBS aired the reunion portion of its season 39 finale, castaways Elizabeth Beisel and Jack Nichting announced they're dating. The Olympic medalist shared the big news and made their romance Instagram official on Thursday. "Woah. Did you guys hear the news?" she captioned a photo of Nichting giving her a piggyback ride. "I've got a curly haired boyfriend named Jack and he is simply the most wonderful human being I know. And yes, we share hair products." Her main man did the same. "I am beyond proud to call this curly headed, exuberant, and...

The New York Times headline says it all:” ‘Survivor’ Limps to a Finale After a Difficult Season.”
CBS’ venerable reality show has been on the air since 2000 sunk to a new low in its latest edition. Not its ratings, since returned to the top 10 of most-watched series, ranking at No. 7, but in its handling of the sensitive #MeToo-era inappropriate touching by a male contestant. On this edition’s premiere, two female players discussed how Dan Spilo was a little too touchy-feely. One player, Kellee Kim, specifically told him on camera that she did not like being touched by other people.
At that early point in the season, you would think someone at the network or the producers might have stepped in. But no. And matters just grew worst from there as some female players exploited Kellee’s concerns and caused Janet Carbin to vote against Dan to show solidarity with...

“Survivor: Island of the Idols” concludes Wednesday, December 18 as the final five — Lauren Beck, Janet Carbin, Dean Kowalski, Noura Salman and Tommy Sheehan — duke it out for the chance to be one of only three that will plead their case to the jury — Jack Nichting, Kellee Kim, Jamal Shipman, Aaron Meredith, Missy Byrd, Elizabeth Beisel, Karishma Patel and Elaine Stott — that they are most deserving of the million dollar prize. Season 39 began with excitement as for the first time in many seasons the female players of both tribes were in control of early votes based on a shared interest of working together as women. That narrative quickly turned sour once the merge hit and Dan Spilo‘s season-long behavior of inappropriately touching women became a catalyst for the permanent fracturing of the female alliance we all wanted.

It's crazy to think that Survivor has been on the air for 39 seasons, and the show has only just removed a player from the game for the first time in the show's history.
Jeff Probst stunned the remaining castaways on Wednesday's installment of the CBS reality series, that Dan Spilo was ejected, and would not be returning.
“So I just spoke privately with Dan (Spilo), and I wanna update you guys,” Probst told the castaways in one of the wildest moments of the series to date.
“A decision has been made, and Dan will not be returning to the game. He won’t be coming back to camp. He won’t be on the jury. He’s gone.”
Beyond that, a title card popped up on the screen to give a little bit of insight into what went down.

“Survivor” has been on the air for nearly two decades and 600 episodes now, but something happened during Wednesday’s episode that’s never happened before: a player was ejected from the game. The contestant in question was Dan Spilo, a Los Angeles talent manager who was removed by producers because of an “incident” that happened off-camera. After the episode aired on December 11, host Jeff Probst told Entertainment Weekly Dan was “not happy” to be pulled from the game.
“We talked through everything for quite a while, and by the time he got on the boat to leave he had calmed down and was actually very respectful as he departed,” Probst explained. Filming for this 39th season occurred on Mamanuca Islands, Fiji in April 2019. The four-time Emmy-winning host wouldn’t give any details about the specific incident, “out of respect for privacy and confidentiality.” A title card at the end of...

The Dec. 11 episode of CBS’ Survivor came to a surprising end, with host Jeff Probst walking up to Lumuwaku Camp to deliver the news that one of the players, Dan Spilo, a prominent Hollywood manager-producer, has been ejected. This marks the first time in the history of the long-running reality series that a contestant has been removed.
“I just spoke privately with Dan and I want to update you guys,” Probst said “A decision has been made and Dan will not be returning to the game. He won’t be coming back to camp. He won’t be on the jury. He’s gone.”
He did not elaborate further, and, after quick reactions from Janet, Tommy and Lauren, the episode ended with a card, which read, “Dan was removed from the game after a report of another incident, which happened off-camera and did not involve a player.”

With only nine players left in “Survivor: Island of the Idols” the path to the end of the game is coming into focus. Of those left, five are from the original Vokai tribe and four are from the original Lairo tribe. A season that began with Vokai outplaying Lairo in challenges and women from both tribes outsmarting the men at tribal councils is now almost evenly blurred, leaving the door open for any one of the nine to outlast the others as sole survivor.
But although technically anyone can still win Season 39, we think there are four players in the game that have no realistic shot at the title. Below we break down our thoughts on those four players. In another article we discuss the five we think can win. Do you agree or disagree?

So-called reality competition shows are often in their own little bubble when it comes to what is actually shown on TV. In order to win, sometimes contestants go too far to push aside their rivals including being deceitful and taking advantage of someone’s common decency.
But what unfolded on the November 13 episode of the 39th season of “Survivor” was one for the history books, causing producers to step in both on and off the camera about castaway Dan Spilo‘s habit of inappropriately touching fellow contestant Kellee Kim. However, two other players, Missy Byrd and Elizabeth Beisel, took matters further and lied about also having #MeToo-like issues with Dan — causing Janet Carbin to vote against someone she actually liked at tribal council over concern for fellow females in the game. Survivor contestants Missy Byrd and Elizabeth Beisel have opened up about their actions during the veteran reality series' November 13 episode, in which the pair used sexual harassment allegations to advance their respective games.
During the controversial installment, Kellee Kim opened up to Missy about inappropriate physical contact she'd experienced from Dan Spilo.
Dan's actions were caught on camera, and Kellee confronted him about it, leading to production stepping in to issue Dan a warning.
Missy turned to Elizabeth to fake a story with the intention of getting Dan voted out of the game. In shock scenes, they managed to turn Dan's close ally, Janet Carbin, against him.
Their plan did not work, however, and Kellee was the one sent packing at the tribal council.
There was an immediate backlash as fans and even former contestants debated what went down on social media, and now Elizabeth and Missy have apologized for their actions.

Their plan did not work, however, and Kellee was the one sent packing at the tribal council.
There was an immediate backlash as fans and even former contestants debated what went down on social media, and now Elizabeth and Missy have apologized for their actions.

Survivor's Elizabeth and Missy Apologize: Sexual Harassment Has 'No Business' Being Used as a Tactic
Survivor: Island of the Idols‘ Elizabeth Beisel and Missy Byrd have both tendered apologizes for their actions during the reality series’ Nov. 13 installment, where they trumped up sexual harassment allegations against a fellow castaway.
In the double-episode outing, castaway Kellee Kim made clear her discomfort with Dan Spilo’s encroaching of her personal space and inappropriate touching — to a point that on-site producers needed to intervene, and give Dan a formal warning.

Survivor contestants Missy Byrd and Elizabeth Beisel had some apologizing to do after last night's episode. After Kellee Kim shared her complaints about inappropriate touching from Dan Spilo with Missy, Missy and Elizabeth concocted their own fake story about Dan to help convince other players to vote him out. It ended up being Kellee herself who got the boot, and it made for a really unfortunate ending to a terrible story. Viewers were outraged by Elizabeth and Missy's behavior, and now the two women have posted lengthy apologies to Twitter, specifically addressing Kellee and Janet Carbin, who was affected by their plan. The producers of the long-running CBS show Survivor are now faced with an uncomfortable situation, as two female contestants have confessed that their allegations of sexual harassment against a male contestant were made up as part of “game play” strategy.
Survivor’s premise strands contestants on deserted beaches for 39 days while they tackle challenges. Players vote contestants off the island, denying them a shot at the $1 million grand prize. When it gets down to three people, previously exiled competitors decide who will win.
On Wednesday’s episode, an allegation of sexual harassment by one of the contestants was raised. Shockingly, the person who complained suffered the biggest penalty by being booted from the show. So far, producers and CBS have not commented on the situation.

Has there ever been a “Survivor” season that was so consumed by real-world social issues? Here we all thought that super players Sandra Diaz-Twine and Rob Mariano‘s mentoring would be the draw of the show’s 39th season. But the insertion of the Queen and Boston Rob into “Island of the Idols” with their rather obvious lessons on gameplay hasn’t made that big of an impact so far.
What has stood out is some of the behavioral and emotional baggage that the contestants brought with them to Fiji and openly discussed with their tribemates. Consider Karishma Patal‘s sharing her feelings about her traditional arranged marriage. Then there was a respectful verbal discussion about how Jamal Shipman felt when Jack Nichting called his buff a “durag,” which led to a civil talk about white male privilege. After seven long weeks, the merge finally arrived this week on “Survivor: Island of the Idols.” With 13 castaways still in the running to win the $1 million prize, the original Vokai tribe had a slight seven-to-six numbers advantage over their original Lairo counterparts. Despite those numbers, Gold Derby readers predicted Dan would be the one most likely to get his torch snuffed at the merge. Were they correct?

Wednesday’s episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols” will feature the long-awaited merge as the seven original Vokai tribe members and six original Lairo players join together as one. At first glance Vokai seems to have the upper hand in terms of sheer numbers, but our readers think tribal lines won’t be the only determining factor. As of this writing Vokai’s Dan Spilo has 29/20 racetrack odds to be voted out at the merge, just ahead of Lairo’s Aaron Meredith at 71/20 odds.

Even though Jack Nichting was voted out of Wednesday’s seventh episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” he is looking ahead to the next stage of the competition. “I’m freaking pumped to be on the jury!” he shouted during his exit interview at the end of the episode. Jack is now the first member of the jury that will determine the winner of the $1 million prize. He’ll be joined by another jury member each week until only the finalists remain during the Season 39 finale in December.

With the merge on the horizon, the Vokai and Lairo camps were dead even at seven members a piece heading into Wednesday’s seventh episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols.” The Vokai tribe had a four-three split with Elizabeth Beisel, Missy Byrd, Aaron Meredith and Elaine Stott on one side and Lauren Beck, Tommy Sheehan and Dan Spilo on the other. Meanwhile, the Lairo tribe was flirting with a girls alliance vs. the three guys. So which castaway ended up getting their torch snuffed by host Jeff Probst?

New Vokai member Elaine Stott acted like a boss at tribal council last week when she used an advantage and blocked Jason Linden‘s vote. That convinced Aaron Meredith to join her and the two other original Lairo members, Missy Byrd and Elizabeth Beisel, to snuff out Jason’s torch. As Elaine declared, “I’m gonna play the hero and ride in on my stallion and jump off and save the day for my peeps.”
Of all the 14 castaways still in the game, Elaine is my favorite. This down-to-earth good ol’ gal from Kentucky had likability out the wazoo from the start. In her bio, the 41-year-old factory worker notes that people often underestimate her. That certainly was true of Lauren Beck, who demeaned Elaine’s game by saying she isn’t smart enough to have an idol. However, she is smart enough to get a block the vote advantage,...

Heading into tribal council during Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor” Season 39, the newly formed Vokai tribe was composed of four original Vokai members and four original Lairo players. Both groups were willing to force a tie and draw rocks, but then Elaine pulled out her block-a-vote advantage she found thanks to her visit to the Island of the Idols. The Lairo foursome used the advantage to block Jason’s vote and then send him packing with a four-to-three vote. “It sucks,” Jason said in his exit interview with CBS (watch above).

I have been fairly cool about the whole “Island of the Idols” tutorials provided by former “Survivor” champs Rob Mariano and Sandra Diaz-Twine this season. But leave to good ol’ gal Elaine Stott to disarm both reality superstars with her gusto for the game. Maybe she was a little too eager to say yes to their offer before she even what the task was that the mentors were about to dangle before her.
But given that she was perceived as a target in a post-swap Vokai tribe that was evenly split between four Lairo stalwarts, including Elaine, and four original Vokai members, her advantage of a vote block worked out beautifully. Rob was tsk-tsking her impulsiveness to say yes without any info, but Sandra was all “you go girl” about the 41-year-old Kentucky-based factory worker. “Survivor” being “Survivor,” the castaway even shared the fact that her mother passed away three...

Heading into Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” Karishma Patel had overwhelming 17/10 odds of being eliminated after being on the chopping block for weeks. If CBS’s latest spoiler-filled preview trailer for “Survivor: Island of the Idols” is any indication, it looks like Wednesday’s sixth episode will be a real tearjerker. Something happens between tribe members Jamal Shipman and Jack Nichting that’s described as a “powerful, life-changing moment.” In the promo video (watch above), Jack, a 23-year-old graduate student from Virginia, declares, “It was really cool to share a very human moment because it brought us together as friends.” And Jamal, a 33-year-old college administrator from Rhode Island, proclaims, “I will remember that for the rest of my life.”

In “Survivor,” a tribal swap can be the kiss of death for a once powerful player at the same time that it can be a glimmer of hope for someone at the bottom of their old tribe’s totem pole. When the Lairo and Vokai tribes were shaken up on episode 5 of “Island of the Idols,” the five original Vokai members that were swapped to Lairo earned the luckiest of draws. That luck earned them the comfort of feeling safe after they lost the immunity challenge and were tasked with voting one of the three original Lairo members out. The decision to eliminate Tom Laidlaw wasn’t easy, but appears to have been orchestrated by Kellee Kim and Janet Carbin, the two players I’m now considering the most powerful in the game.

It’s that time again, “Survivor” fans — “Drop your buffs” time, that is. Just when we were starting to remember who was living at what camp, Jeff Probst came along and mixed things up with a tribe swap. Vokai went into Wednesday’s episode with a nine-to-seven numbers advantage over Lairo, meaning all of the success they had at the immunity challenges (winning three of four) was squandered after the tribe swap evened things out at eight members apiece. Which contestants took advantage of the switcheroo and whose torch was snuffed by Jeff because of it?

We really need to discuss the Lairo female alliance. Prior to episode 4, we were calling Missy Byrd and Chelsea Walker the two most powerful players in the game. Now, as we look forward to episode 5, Chelsea’s been eliminated and Missy plummets to the bottom of these updated power rankings. What happened? To keep it short: Missy made a horrible decision that marks the beginning of the end for the Lairo women’s reign.

In our first power rankings of Season 39, the “Survivor: Island of the Idols” cast was dominated by the women and in this week’s update they’re still at top with only minor switches in placement. Missy Byrd and Chelsea Walker are leading a five woman alliance at Lairo while Janet Carbin and Lauren Beck join with the most powerful man in the game, Tommy Sheehan, for control at Vokai. In that previous ranking we correctly deemed Vince Moua as one of the more vulnerable players prior to his boot in episode 3, knowing he was on the outside of the female alliance that sacrificed him in order to maintain their power in the gender balance.

Vince Moua, the third castaway voted out of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” was heartbroken after having his torch snuffed by host Jeff Probst in Wednesday’s episode. This 27-year-old admissions counselor from California had gone through a “Survivor” boot camp like no other when Sandra Diaz-Twine and Rob Mariano tasked him with stealing fire from the other camp. Vince succeeded at his mission, stealing ashes since the fire had burned out, and won a hidden immunity idol for his efforts. Unfortunately, he left with that idol in his pocket as he was voted out at tribal council.
“I was just blindsided, I guess you can say,” Vince said in his exit interview at the end of the third episode. He confessed that he brought his idol with him inside of his water bottle and was “really thinking” about using it, but ultimately decided not to. Watch the video above.

Heading into Wednesday’s third episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” the Lairo and Vokai tribes were even at nine members apiece after the eliminations of Ronnie Bardah and Molly Byman, respectively. Both tribes also possessed one hidden immunity idol: Lairo’s Chelsea Walker found hers in a tree stump almost by accident and Vokai’s Kellee Kim won hers at the Island of the Idols. With the tribes being evenly matched in terms of physical strength and mental acuity, it was anyone’s guess who’d be sent to tribal council this week. So how’d it all play out?

On the second episode of “Survivor” 39, one theme became very clear — the female castaways are large, in charge and not messing around. From making fire and winning physical and mental challenges to swaying the votes of their tribe mates, the ladies have been stand-outs.
But the best move so far, according to the show’s fans, was when nanny Lauren Beck rightfully targeted the charismatic law student Molly Byton as a threat after she swiftly wrapped two Voika males — Jamal Shipman and Jack Nichting — around her finger, earning the nickname “Parvati 2.0.” Lauren convinced two other Voika underdogs, Noura Salman and Jason Linden, to vote for Molly and others followed. As the blindsided Molly said during her exit interview, “I’m not sure exactly where I went wrong or what happened or how this tide turned. I guess I got cocky and I’ve been humbled.”

Over the first two weeks of “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” a powerful girls alliance has formed on the Lairo tribe with Karishma Patel, Elizabeth Beisel, Missy Byrd, Elaine Stott and Chelsea Walker. That means the remaining four Lairo guys are outnumbered … unless they do something about it. While most are on board, Vince seems slightly skeptical. Watch CBS’s promo video above.

How great were the women on both the Orange and Purple teams on the second episode of “Survivor: Island of the Idols”? We will count the ways in just a second. This Vokai tribe member was chosen at random last week when Elizabeth Beisel picked her name out of a bag after losing her fire-making challenge (and her vote) to Rob. Did Kellee succeed this week in gaining an advantage in the game? And which tribe lost the immunity challenge and was forced to vote someone off the island?
