Every year, one event rocks New York to its very core in a way that is so profound and so special that it grows in audience attendance every fall when it rolls along. That event, of course, is the hugely popular New York Comic Con and thousands of faithful pop culture fans and cosplayers flock to the Big Apple to partake in the annual celebration. It is an event that draws in crowds from all over the world and features many individuals and companies showing off their latest products in the hopes that those who come to the convention will purchase whatever they’re selling. But Nycc isn’t just about pushing merchandise and entertainment, it is about togetherness and every October, geeks come to New York and they conquer.
If you are unfamiliar with Nycc, then it’s pretty simple. It is a comic book, movie, TV, video game...

The following is an excerpt from Randall Munroe's new book, What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions, out September 2. New York–Style Time Machine Q. I assume when you travel back in time you end up at the same spot on the Earth’s surface. At least, that’s how it worked in the Back to the Future movies. If so, what would it be like if you traveled back in time, starting in Times Square, New York, 1,000 years? 10,000 years? 100,000 years? 1,000,000 years? 1,000,000,000 years? What about forward in time 1,000,000 years? —Mark Dettling1,000 years back Manhattan has been continuously inhabited for the past 3,000 years, and was first settled by humans perhaps 9,000 years ago. In the 1600s, when Europeans arrived, the area was inhabited by the Lenape people [1]. The Lenape were a loose confederation of tribes who lived in what is now Connecticut, New York, New Jersey,...

For scientists, the price of progress is specialization. When the goal of any researcher is to lay claim to a tiny niche in a crowded discipline, it’s hard for laypeople to find answers to the really important interdisciplinary questions. Questions like, "Is it possible to build a jetpack using downward-firing machine guns?” Fortunately, such people can turn to Randall Munroe, the author of the Xkcd comic strip loved by fans of internet culture.

One of the rising stars in comics didn’t get her start pencilling fill-in issues of Uncanny X-Men or Birds of Prey, but through Tumblr and a self-published webcomic. Webcomics have become a bigger deal over the past decade. Even some cartoonists like Randall Munroe of xkcd and Kate Beaton of Hark! A Vagrant have made a living through their webcomics. Without constraints of a publishing company or editor, webcomics are a place where unique voices can be heard, and topics considered to be taboo can be discussed. One of these unique voices is writer/artist Kate Leth, who is the creator of autobiographical webcomic Kate Or Die! She is a Halifax, Nova Scotia native and works at the Strange Adventures comics store. However, Kate or Die! is about much more than working in comics retail.

The White House has a petition to appoint Randall Munroe, creator of xkcd, to be the new Secretary of Energy. The petition explains that Randall Munroe has displayed the ability to explain complex topics in a wry, easily digestible fashion to millions of people 3 days/week in his web comic. As Secretary of Energy, he will be able to have an even larger platform for this purpose, and probably more importantly, the ear of the President of the United States. Better hurry, though– the petition ends March 3 and he needs 99,000 more signatures.

Today’s xkcd comic, unless someone can convince me otherwise, now holds the record for the biggest comic panel ever. Fittingly, the strip is called “Click and drag” and you’ll have to do a Lot of it to read the entire thing.
At 165888 x 79872 pixels, or 1.3 terapixels, the image would fill the screens of 4212 iPads with retina displays in an 81 x 52 grid. The grayscale image is 12.3 gigabytes in size. If it was printed at a size big enough that you could see the people, it would cover a football end zone. And as you might expect in a Randall Munroe comic, there are little treasures to be discovered all over the place. I don’t want to spoil the fun, but yes, Waldo’s in there too.
Yes, there are people who have started stitching the full image together, but we’d like to warn you that the full...

What I’m about to tell you may seem shocking, given that you all must think my entire week is taken up by laboring over each of my beautiful, wonderful, perfectly polished and amazingly insightful columns (really, they’re good enough for framing, every one), and that’s 100% true. But I’m an excellent multi-tasker (it’s one of my secret superheroine powers, along with the Gift of Ocd), and so at the same time as I am cogitating about, compiling, and composing said columns, I’m also magically working a regular 9-5 – or sometimes 10-6, Odin and all his Asgardians bless flex-time.
So, like some of you other folks out there who are concerned with paying the bills and all that nonsense and thus have desk jobs, I sometimes spend my lunch time stuck in front of my office computer with just a few free minutes to obtain sustenance...
