Robert Pattinson was cast as the seventh iteration of a live-action Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Set during the early years of Bruce Wayne’s vigilantism, the film saw the character investigating several murders of high-profile men of power in Gotham. The film was released in 2022 and earned $722 million at the box office.
Though Ben Affleck was still playing the role of the Caped Crusader in the Dceu at the time, he stepped down from a solo Batman film, which allowed Reeves to explore a younger Batman with Pattinson. The Twilight star mentioned that the film was different from previous iterations of the character as it focused on the inner turmoil of Bruce Wayne. According to him, the only other film that achieved the feat was Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

The disappointment that comes from seeing a great film do poorly at the box office almost certainly never goes away. One of the most important Batman storytellers of all time, Bruce Timm, does not seem to understand how good Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is.
Timm, who produced Batman: The Animated Series and co-directed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, discussed how much he “cringe[s]” at the beloved animated 1993 Batman flick in an interview from last year. He noted that while the 1990s were a major decade for animation in motion pictures, the Kevin Conroy starrer was initially intended to be a television special.

For Timm, it seems as though “ten percent” of the movie was missing. It is possible that he will always watch the best possible cut of the movie. However, the version that audiences saw is among the greatest Batman films ever,...

When Batman: Mask of the Phantasm hit theaters on Christmas Day, 1993, it had been set up to fail. Warner Bros. initially ordered the film as a direct-to-video release in the wake of the massive commercial and critical success of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series. But the studio abruptly shifted course with a theatrical rollout without extending the production timeline or planning a marketing campaign, all while expanding the budget. Despite costing a mere $6 million, the film, released during a creative and commercial resurgence for DC’s dark superhero, couldn’t even recoup its budget at the box office.
And yet, what by rights could have ended up as a mere footnote in the long history of Batman media now stands three decades later as a beloved crystallization of the series that birthed it and, for many fans, a canonical adaptation. Much of this can be attributed to...

When it arrived in late 1993, critics hailed it but did disappointing box office and it has subsequently gone on to gain stature as it has been available in multiple packages ever since. Written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves, one would think many hands might spoil the tale, but instead, all four revered the Caped Crusader and honored him with an all-original story.

I love a good Batman movie as much as the next person, but one thing that's always bugged me is how often Bruce Wayne is treated as a bit of a cipher in his own story. Screenwriters and directors are all too eager to get to the more entertaining business of the supervillains, repeatedly giving us the hoary old imagery of his parents' murder and the billionaire moping around his mansion before we get to the fun stuff.
That flaw is comprehensively addressed in "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm," the 1993 theatrical release originating from the Emmy-Award-winning animated TV series. To date, it is the only Batman film to fully invest in Bruce Wayne and his shadowy alter ego as a character just as interesting as Gotham City's colorful gallery of crooks.
The stylized animation gives us a hunky Bruce Wayne who literally puts the square jaw into the term "square-jawed hero,...

It's likely that when you read a Batman comic, you hear his voice. Whether it be the gravely threatening rasp of his Caped Crusader or the suave swagger of his Bruce Wayne, that's Kevin Conroy you're hearing.
He was the definitive voice of Batman for the past 30 years, portraying the role in TV, movies, video games, and a rare foray into live-action. Yet, that moody and driven Dark Knight persona couldn't have been any further from the reality of the man with the infectious laugh who loved to sing and was capable of penning a wonderfully honest account of the trials of being an openly gay actor.
The man who Mark Hammill said will always be his Batman died on November 11, 2022, leaving behind an incredible body of work and a legacy that will never be forgotten.

I never thought I would be saying this so soon, but revered voice actor Kevin Conroy has died at age 66. The man who so many looked up to as "Batman" for decades has left us, and the world feels a little dimmer without him. As the stories about working with him continue to flood in, the common throughline shows industry-wide respect for a wholeheartedly kind individual. It's never easy to watch people who have contributed to the entertainment you've grown up with pass on, but it's even harder when they're as treasured as Conroy was.
For over 30 years, Conroy had been the Caped Crusader's definitive voice, whether in the guise of Bruce Timm's "Batman: The Animated Series" or the "Arkham" video games. Among the sea of talented folks who have donned the cowl, Conroy struck this perfect balance, where the imposing stature of Batman is molded from the hidden melancholy of Bruce Wayne.

Tom King and Clay Mann’s Batman/Catwoman kicked off its complex thread of mysteries earlier this month. In the present, the Bat and the Cat set out to search for Andrea Beaumont’s missing son, while an older Selina Kyle pays a friend a visit in the future, with the first issue concluding with the return of killer vigilante the Phantasm.
It’s hard to say just where these threads are going after just one issue, but we do know that at least one new character from Bruce and Selina’s future and DC Comics’ past is set to play a major role in this story. As revealed by King and Mann on Twitter, Helena Wayne, the daughter first teased in King and Lee Weeks’ amazing Batman Annual #2 (2017), will don the cape and cowl in the maxi-series.

The Batwoman episode of The CW's epic, five-part crossover event saw Kate Kane teaming up with Kara, aka Supergirl, to travel to Earth-99 in search of one of the Paragons who could save the multiverse from the machinations of the Anti-Monitor.
Once there, Kate meets that world's Bruce Wayne (played by Batman: The Animated Series' Kevin Conroy), an older man who has turned hateful and bitter after a lifetime of vigilantism. While Kate initially believes this version of her cousin could be the Paragon of Courage they are looking for, it quickly becomes clear that he is not.

For a lot of us it might seem that Phantasm, one of the more interesting villains that Batman has ever gone against, was something left back in the 1993 animated movie. But according to Cooper Hood of ScreenRant the mysterious villain will be making a return to the Batman comics in 2020 to supposedly close out the Batman arc. So far it’s not certain if the Phantasm is going to be the same person underneath the mask, as some folks might be expecting Andrea Beaumont to be making a return into Batman’s life, but at this point it seems as

9. Batman & Robin (1997)
Occasionally a film's astronomical budget and hype can overwhelm it on initial release, prompting the critics to sharpen knives and audiences to switch off. Sometimes it takes time for a film to breathe and marinate, it can fare better when revisited after the dust settles. Unfortunately this isn't the case for Batman & Robin - 17 years down the line it's still a steaming pile on repeat viewing.

The Dark Knight was not the first great Batman movie.
Neither was Batman Begins – in fact, years before Warner Bros. brought Christopher Nolan in to revive their marquee franchise, another group of talented film-makers delivered what is still, to many, the definitive on-screen version of the character.
And if you’re a fan of the character and haven’t seen Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Right now seems an ideal time to bring this topic up, as Batman: The Animated Series just celebrated its 20th anniversary (completely unmarked – for Shame Warner Bros.) on the 5th of this month. And this show deserves serious recognition.
