Dhoomam, by writer-director Pawan Kumar, is like a breeze that later grows into a hurricane and ultimately finds no real place to unleash all its energy. Fahadh Faasil is one of my favorite actors, but I hadn’t seen him in an out-and-out plot-driven movie that did not leave any space for a character study. The story about Avinash, the marketing head of a tobacco company, Dhoomam, is a crime thriller with the ‘race against time’ trope used to an exhausting extent, cramming several didactic (and sometimes preachy and heavy-handed) sequences about the ill-effects of smoking. After Avinash quits his job, he and his wife Diya are attacked, and someone wants him to complete a series of tasks if they want to survive. Avinash and Diya run around the city to find the man responsible, and the wild goose chase seems to be connected to Avinash’s job, where he excelled in marketing cigarettes,...

There is no dearth of slice-of-life films in Malayalam cinema. Such stories leave the audience with a smile and sometimes with a feeling of melancholy. Bangalore Days, Ustad Hotel, Dear Friend, and Premam are some of the prime examples of films in this genre that leave a lasting impact. Master Peace is a brand-new Disney+ Hotstar miniseries that navigates the audience through two families who are related through marriage. Directed by Sreejith N., the web series was released on the streaming platform on October 25, 2023.
Master Peace is the tale of a married couple, Riya and Binoy, who are going through a rough patch personally and professionally. Adding trouble to their equation are Binoy’s mother, Aniyamma, and Riya’s father, Kuriyachan, who are adamant about trying to mend things between their children, while their partners beg them to stay out of their affairs. Riya is on the verge of launching her new dating app,...

ReviewThis is a 2-hour 23-minute drill on how smoking can kill you, delivered in the breathless fashion of a lecturer who is trying to cover the entire syllabus before the bell rings. In Pawan Kumar’s Dhoomam, Avinash (Fahadh Faasil), the marketing genius of a tobacco company, proposes that they make an anti-smoking ad that people would actually want to watch – and slyly promote smoking through it. The idea behind Dhoomam seems to be loosely based on this thought. A thriller about the ill-effects of smoking that would catch the audience’s attention. Except, there is nothing sly or subtle about the messaging. Though all the matches of the Group league will have a direct telecast, the I-League clubs feel that they are being given an ill treatment in the qualifying rounds this time as all the matches of the first edition of Super Cup were telecast live.
The sentiment is that; the All India Football Federation (Aiff) and its marketing partners treat I-League clubs like this only. They think I-League clubs are nothing. What the clubs can do if the federation itself ignores the I-League clubs.
"Whoever comes, there is no change in the attitude," feels Vc Praveen, owner of the Gokulam Fc.
"It’s simply bad. If this is the way that they are treating the I-League clubs, it shows that I-League clubs are nothing, nowhere this happens. This is really bad on the part of the Aiff. They should not have allowed it. If not direct telecast, they should have...

The unit of director A R Mohan’s ‘Itlu Maredumilli Prajaneekam’, featuring Telugu actor Allari Naresh in the lead, has released the theatrical trailer of the film. Interestingly, the entire unit of the film, including actor Allari Naresh, chose to release the trailer at Maredumilli, a scenic village in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh.
‘Itlu Maredumulli Prajaneekam’ will be a remarkably different film in the career of Allari Naresh, who plays a government officer visiting the tribal area as an election officer.
The trailer shows a government official, along with his team reaching Maredumilli, which is in a remote place in the hills, to conduct elections there.
The entire state is awaiting the elections. Under these circumstances, the government officer gets to know the actual problems of the people over there.
He realises that they don’t have access to even basic amenities and gets to know...
