There are only two people with more than a few minutes of screentime in Hiver Nomade, but what Manuel von Stürler's documentary lacks in human beings it more than makes up for in snow-covered sheep. The creatures bleat softly as they're kept in line by no-nonsense herding dogs, stoic donkeys dutifully carrying the shepherds' provisions on their backs all the while. Much like Sweetgrass before it, Hiver Nomade charts the arduous passage of some 800 sheep across unforgiving terrain—namely, somewhere near the French–Swiss border in winter. The thin layer of permafrost covering the ground is lovely to look at but makes sustenance difficult to come by for the animals. Von Stürler offers raw footage of the four-month trek itself, which is often mesmerizing in its auster...

★★★☆☆ Like Vincent van Gogh's 1884 practically-titled painting, Manuel von Stürler's debut documentary Winter Nomads (Hiver nomade, 2012) is a portrait of a 'Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep'. The subjects of the filmmaker's pastoral, however, are not situated in the 19th century or confined to the pages of a history book, but a living, breathing anachronism set against the winter landscapes of modern day Switzerland. The shepherds in question here are the sage, old Pascal and the young and willing Carole; the nature of their relationship is never made explicit, other than the fact that she is clearly the apprentice to his master herder.
The pursuit? A 'transhumance'; spending four months on the road/track/field with three pack donkeys, a trio of tireless sheepdogs (plus Leon the puppy) and their 800-strong flock who they will slowly fatten up, naturally feeding on any grass they can find. They encounter others...

Manuel von Stürler's Winter Nomads is a charming documentary about a pair of Swiss shepherds who travel with their flock of 800 sheep over great distances for a few months every year to allow the sheep to graze naturally so that they produce high quality meat. Pascal is the older and more experienced shepherd, and accompanying him is Carole, a young lady who acts as his assistant. Audiences get to follow them on their long journey of 'transhumance', along with their sheep, dogs and donkeys. We see the pair being greeted by their old friends but abused by some angry farmers. And at the end of the journey, Pascal awaits anxiously to hear of the buyers' comments about the sheep they have reared. This very old...
