The best thing about the Permanent Roommates saga has been its relatable characters. The series, whose previous two seasons were critically acclaimed, is now back with a third season. The first season had been released at a time when the web-series format was relatively new and The Viral Fever, aka Tvf, had cashed in on the vacant space on YouTube. At the time, the characters of Mikesh, aka Mikki, and Tanya, aka Tanu, had captured the zeitgeist of urban India in a very endearing way. Season 2 was not that well received, but the makers have now decided to add to the story by bringing in the third season.
It’s hard to see the series with a fresh lens. The characters evoke a strange sense of nostalgia. Mikesh and Tanya had become the quintessential live-in couple. There have been other shows as well that have tried to recreate the dramedy...

The trailer revolves around the disappearance and seeming suicide of a schoolteacher called Sajini which is played by Radhika Madan. The premise sees that Sajini has likely killed herself after the leak of something sexually graphic which happened to her, prompting her to allegedly kill herself.
However, police officer Nimrat Kaur, who is investigating this case doesn’t really believe that Sajini is dead, let alone committed suicide and instead believes that all of this is a facade hiding something more sinister.

In a politically charged climate, rumors can often become deadly. Hate trumps everything else, and people have to pay the price for their honesty and goodwill. Sudhir Mishra’s Afwaah weaves a provocative story around this pervasive politics of hate and tries to satirize the situation through the motif of rumors.
The plot begins by showing us the characters placed nicely in their surroundings. Rahab Khan is an entrepreneur running a telecom company. Having returned from abroad, he plans to stay in India to expand his business. Vicky Singh is an up-and-coming politician who is on his way to forming an alliance with a powerful minister by marrying his daughter Nivedita. One fateful night, Rahab gets embroiled in local politics when Nivedita elopes, and Rahab helps coincidentally, saving her from Vicky’s goons. Rumors spread around town about him having forcefully taken Nivedita, and the matter took on a religious color.

Afwaah
Sudhir Mishra is back in form with a film that has a lot of unexplored anger and resentment swimming underneath. The surface tension is killing Nivi, the conflicted fiancée of a bigoted political opportunist, who must take a life-changing call: remain a cow in her ambitious husband’s shed or run. Nivi chooses the latter option.
In Afwaah, Sudhir cranes his neck out of a truck that is probably carrying contraband goods. We suspect it to be one thing, but it turns out to be donkeys which come out braying at the end. This is the only humorous moment in a film that is grim tense and ceaselessly exploratory and never preachy.
In the smoothly political language of an auteur on a night out for dark adventures, Sudhir Mishra writes out a celluloid exposition on religious intolerance and political opportunism. Sumeet Vyas is pitch-perfect as the roguish political leader...

One can observe a growing trend in recent films where a previously ignored aspect in relation to women and their insignificance is taken into consideration and used to change the plot and narrate an impressive story. The insignificance of women, therefore, turns out to be their strength. In “Immerstill,” we had Hannelore Schiller taking her chances to make people aware that women exist despite society considering them unimportant. She wanted society to take up the responsibility for their women. In “Unseen,” we are told through Zenzile Mwale’s life that her insignificance comes of great help to her to reach her beloved husband, irrespective of the murders she commits in her defense.
In “Mrs Undercover,” Anushree Mehta uses the insignificance of Durga (Radhika Apte) to spy on and crack a murder mystery. Durga is reminded by her patriarchal husband (Saheb Chatterjee) that she is just a housewife and knows nothing else.

Radhika said that now-a-days, women-led films are getting more eyeballs from the viewers.
She said: “I think the premise of the film was really exciting for me. We live in a country where there is a lot of patriarchy and so many women slog days and nights to keep their families happy, and yet go unnoticed so I think it did resonate with me and what I like about Durga is her innocence, her naivety, her clumsiness and even her journey of discovering herself. Bollywood has found a safe haven on the streaming platforms and is hell bent upon exploring themes that were earlier either forbidden or had no takers. After the huge success of ‘Vicky Donor’, a film about sperm donation, a number of so-called taboo subjects have found their way into mainstream narratives. ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhan’ on erectile dysfunction, ‘Padman’ on menstrual hygiene and ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ on gender diversities, to name a few.
In the latest, ‘Chhatriwali’, the themes are male contraceptives and safe sex. No harm in dealing with a subject that may not be still discussed openly in families, although everyone seems to be aware of condoms in big and small towns alike.
Set in Karnal, Haryana, the film is about Sanya Dhingra (Rakul), an unemployed chemistry whiz, who is looking for a job and uses her skills to fight an important social taboo by taking sex education classes for young people.

Talking about the lack of awareness around sexual wellness and awareness, the actor said, “In our country, sex is prevalent, but sex education isn’t. The makers of the upcoming film ‘Chhatriwali’ have unveiled the trailer, which focuses on safe sex and sex education among the youngsters, led by Rakul Preet Singh’s character.
The over two-minute long trailer begins with the stereotypes in the society surrounding sex and how women have to suffer because of a lack of education.
The trailer then focuses on a professor played by Rajesh Tailang thinking how it is not really important and is a taboo to teach children about sex and ‘copulation’.
Then enters Rakul, who gets married to Sumeet Vyas who doesn’t believe in using condoms.
Rakul said: “In today’s patriarchal society, every household needs a Sanya who holds the courage to single-handedly fight against all odds, traditions, social norms, and barriers. I hope this character inspires others to find their voice and speak up against unsafe sex and the many health implications of not using protection.

The Fame Game
You may argue that the series that heralded Madhuri Dixit Nene in the Ott space frittered away its potential at the end but a second season may just redeem it. A moving performance by Manav Kaul, strong turns by Sanjay Kapoor, Suhasini Mulay,...
