Paramount Network is shifting strategies — and changing names.
Variety has learned that the ViacomCBS-owned cabler is planning to move out of long form series television and instead focus its efforts on made-for-tv movies featuring big name stars. To that end, the network will be rebranded as the Paramount Movie Network. The rebrand will take place globally within the next year.
The current plan is to program 52 original movies per year on the network, or one movie per week. Each movie will have a budget in the low-to-mid-seven-figure range. Once per quarter, the network expects to program a miniseries or scripted series on the scale of its hit drama “Yellowstone,” potentially spinning off characters from those projects into their own films or sequels in the future.

Pour one out for “68 Whiskey.”
Paramount Network has canceled the dark comedy after a single season, Variety has confirmed. News of the cancelation comes around six months after the show wrapped its 10-episode run.
Blending drama with humor, “68 Whiskey” followed a multicultural band of Army medics stationed in Afghanistan on a base nicknamed “The Orphanage.” Together, the medics navigate a dangerous and sometimes absurd world, relying on comradery, various vices, and occasionally a profound sense of purpose to carry them through. The show starred Sam Keeley, Jeremy Tardy, Gage Golightly, Cristina Rodlo, Beth Riesgraf, Lamont Thompson, Nicholas Coombe and Derek Theler.
“68 Whiskey” hailed from Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and their Imagine Television banner. The duo served as executive producers on the project, alongside series creator and writer Roberto Benabib. Howard was originally lined up to direct the pilot, but that responsibility eventually fell to Michael Lehmann.

Sarah Babineau, who in recent years enjoyed a heady rise at Comedy Central, is slated to depart the ViacomCBS network by the end of the year, the latest executive to leave entertainment operations at the parent company as it continues to work its way through the merger of the former Viacom and CBS late last year.
Babineau, who joined Comedy Central in 2014 as a vice president of original programming, helped launch Trevor Noah’s tenure on “The Daily Show” and had strong creative ties to well-regarded series such as “Broad City” and “Inside Amy Schumer.”
A network spokesperson said Babineau would stay with the network through the end of 2020. Deadline previously reported that Babineau would leave, and reported that Keith Cox, will take up the duties of overseeing scripted development and studio production across the entire portfolio of youth-and-entertainment focused cable networks that now report to Chris McCarthy. Paramount Network released the trailer for “68 Whiskey” on Monday, a new “comedic drama” from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios.
Blending intense drama with irreverent humor, “68 Whiskey” follows a multicultural band of Army medics stationed in Afghanistan on a base nicknamed “The Orphanage,” according to Paramount. Together, the medics navigate a dangerous and sometimes absurd world, relying on camaraderie, various vices, and, occasionally, a profound sense of purpose to carry them through.
“68 Whiskey,” the cable channel’s first scripted series since “Yellowstone,” stars Sam Keeley, Jeremy Tardy, Gage Golightly, Cristina Rodlo, Beth Riesgraf, Lamont Thompson, Nicholas Coombe and Derek Theler. “68 Whiskey” is an adaptation of Israeli series “Charlie Golf One.”

Paramount Network is plotting more Wife Swap after the unscripted format delivered decent ratings in key demos for the Viacom-owned network.
The broadcaster has ordered a second season of the UK format with 20 new episodes. It comes from Banijay Studios North America.
The network said that compared to the same slot the previous year, the show was up +77% with P18-49 (0.35 rating), up +96% with W18-49 (0.44 rating) and up +75% with total viewers.
The first season launched on April 4, having moved from its original buyer Cmt. The show, which was originally due to air in February on Cmt, moved after Viacom’s realignment of Viitsacom entertainment cable networks under Kent Alterman and Chris McCarthy. Cmt had been a part of a group that also included Paramount Network and TV Land. The programming of the three networks was overseen by Keith Cox, who bought and developed the updated Wife Swap for Cmt.

Paramount Network is moving ahead with a prequel TV series adapting the acclaimed crime drama, Sexy Beast.

Paramount Network has ordered The Last Cowboy, an original unscripted series from Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan, Truly Original and 101 Studios.
The Last Cowboy features highly-skilled horsemen and trainers competing in the intense, high-stakes world of professional reining. It chronicles the lives of eight men and women who compete on the regular reining circuit, a western-based competition where riders guide horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins and stops. These horsemen are determined to elevate and preserve the cowboy tradition as they train and engage in the exclusive ultra-competitive sport.
In conjunction with the series, Sheridan is also launching a reining event called “Run for a Million,” the sport’s first-ever, arena-based competition with a $1 million purse, marking the largest in its history. The upcoming experience will take place on August 15-17, 2019 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, and the competition will come to life in the series finale.

Paramount Network has ordered a new unscripted series, “The Last Cowboy,” from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, the network announced on Wednesday.
The unscripted series, produced by Truly Original and 101 Studios, “spotlights the highly-skilled horsemen and trainers competing in the intense, high-stakes world of professional reining,” according to the network. It will follow eight men and women who “are determined to elevate and preserve the cowboy tradition as they train and engage in the exclusive ultra-competitive sport.”
Derived from the practice of herding cattle, reining is a western-based competition where riders guide horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins and stops, similar to the more European dressage.

In this time of record volume of content competing for audience attention, there’s more than one way to define a series’s success, especially when it comes to structured and unstructured reality shows that don’t follow as strict a format as reality competitions, nor as specific storytelling arcs as scripted programs.
“The DNA and ingredients in every show are very different,” says Keith Cox, president of development at Paramount Network. “You really have to slice it and dice it. Not all shows are created equal, and when you’re thinking of a hit, they’re not defined the same, nor should they be.”
High ratings may be the first indicator of success, but seldom give the full picture of the audience, not only due to viewing habits but also geographic location. “Are they
