Days after Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love overperformed in its opening weekend at the box office, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman stole a bit of the spotlight Feb. 20 in unveiling not one but four intersecting feature films from Sam Mendes about The Beatles, each focusing on one member of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
“You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter about the project that earned the Oscar-winning director a coveted signoff from the group’s selective label Apple Corps. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”
Sony hopes the films, which don’t yet have writers on board, will begin shooting in the U.K. in mid-2025 to make the planned 2027 release for all four titles,...

Sylvester Stallone is synonymous with the character of Rocky Balboa, the scrappy underdog boxer who first brought him to the spotlight in the ’70s. But in recent years, Stallone has made it very clear that even though the films are inextricably linked with him, he’s not happy about the way the original deal was structured and thinks he should have received an ownership stake.
On July 31, following the announcement of a “Rocky” spinoff film in development about the characters of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and Viktor Drago (Viktor Drago), Stallone took to Instagram to express his frustrations about the direction of the expanding franchise, and particularly its longtime producer Irwin Winkler. In a since-deleted post, the actor called the 91-year-old producer and his children Charles and David Winkler “vultures” and “parasites” who he says are exploiting the franchise. Earlier in July, the actor posted another (also now deleted) Instagram...

Chris Brown and Drake say it’s not that they’re “egotistical” — it’s that they’re not able to stay abreast of all “82 million songs on Spotify” and every songwriter allegedly invited to visit Drake’s former hometown of Toronto.
In a blistering new filing in the ongoing copyright battle over the duo’s 2019 hit single “No Guidance,” lawyers representing the superstars’ interests are returning fire after plaintiff Braindon Cooper claimed last month that it’s “both egotistical and without any legal basis whatsoever” to assert Brown and Drake...

Megyn Kelly arrived at NBC News with a vow to shed the hard-news focus and political coverage that had defined her success at Fox News.
“I’m kind of done with politics for now,” Kelly told the audience for her 9 a.m. talk show, “Megyn Kelly Today,” during her first broadcast in September 2017. Instead, she urged viewers to use her show to “get yourself through the day, to have a laugh with us, a smile, sometimes a tear — and maybe a little hope to start your day. Some fun! That’s what we want to be doing.”
In the end, her tenure at NBC News was extremely political — and anything but fun.
NBCUniversal canceled Kelly’s talk show Oct. 26, and she is likely headed toward a split with NBC less than two years after she was recruited from Fox News with a rich $17 million-a-year contract. Her downfall was hastened by...

Megyn Kelly and NBCUniversal executives don’t agree on much these days, but representatives for both sides are likely to have the same opinion on their current separation talks: They aren’t over yet.
The anchor and the media company, working out an exit for Kelly after the cancellation of her morning program, are said to be at odds over the structure of non-disclosure and non-compete stipulations that could restrict Kelly after she leaves, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Kelly could not be reached for immediate comment. NBC News declined to comment. Kelly is represented by California attorney Bryan Freedman. In a statement released late last week, the attorney said Kelly remained an NBCUniversal employee and that the two sides were working out next steps.
These types of discussions are common in separation negotiations. Sticking points in the current talks, which remain fluid, concern the length of...

Can Megyn Kelly and NBC repair a relationship that is already being torn asunder by press reports? Her attorney will have to find out.
Attorney Bryan Freedman is expected to meet with NBC executives “as soon as Friday,” said Davidson Goldin, a spokesman for Kelly. While some media outlets have reported NBC is cutting ties with the star anchor, Goldin said they have not communicated anything about Kelly’s status with the network to her or her team. Kelly and NBC had been in talks about finding her a role at the network that was tied to bigger breaking-news stories and not to her morning program.
Even so, their ties seem loose: NBC aired a repeat of her morning show, “Megyn Kelly Today,” on Thursday — a non-starter in the competitive world of morning TV — and the network said “given the circumstances,” Kelly’s show would run on tape for the rest of the week.
