Steve Burke will depart as CEO of NBCUniversal next year, sources confirmed to Deadline, after a mostly successful decade operating a major media entity as it was absorbed by the No. 1 U.S. cable operator.
Burke, whose current contract ends in August 2020, had recently been telling close associates that he planned to retire. While the end of his contract coincides with the end of the 2020 Olympics, the biggest sporting event on NBCUniversal, some sources indicate that he may depart before that, as early as the first quarter of 2020.
There is no official word on a successor but speculation is that Jeff Shell, Chairman of NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment, would be named new NBCUniversal CEO. NBC’s streaming service is targeting an April 2020 launch, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said on Thursday.
“Our goal is to launch the service next April,” he told media analysts on his company’s Q2 conference call. “We have over 500 people working on the service at present.”
Burke said they’re using the Now TV platform, which has worked well in Europe, as their base.

Kevin Hart is producing with an eye to star in the comedy “Extreme Job,” an English-language remake of a Korean box office smash, and Universal Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights to the film.
Last March, “Extreme Job” became the highest grossing film of all time in South Korea, taking in $127 million in what was 14 times greater than the film’s budget. Cj Entertainment, the Korean entertainment conglomerate that made the original comedy, is developing and producing the English-language remake along with Hart’s HartBeat production banner.
Tracy Oliver is on board to adapt the screenplay about a team of narcotics detectives who go undercover in a fried chicken joint to stake out an organized crime gang. But things take an unexpected turn when the detectives’ chicken recipe suddenly transforms the rundown restaurant into the hottest eatery in town.
