U.S.-based global distributor PBS Intl. is bringing a squad of sports-themed documentaries to MipTV to tie in with the Olympic Games that’ll run this summer in Paris.
“Olympic Dreams” travels to Sierra Leone, one of the world’s poorest nations, as it struggles to recover from its 11-year civil war. It follows Sanusi Turay, a charismatic ex-Sierra Leonean Olympic sprinter, and his most talented athletes, Sarah Bona and Daddy Alie Bangura, through the trials and tribulations of training for the Games in 2004. Their battles are not just on the track — they must also fight poverty and corruption to achieve their goals.
“Olympic Dreams” was directed by Laura Ashton and Ron Orders. It was produced by Ilona Benjamin for Urban Films and Wgbh/Boston.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Review: As a director, George Clooney has delivered many themes, tones, and genres. With The Boys in the Boat, the actor-turned-filmmaker aims for the same inspirational sports tales that have long been Oscar fodder. From Seabiscuit to Unbroken to Rocky, underdog tales have always been rousing cinematic experiences that unify audiences in rooting for the plucky athletes that no one ever thought about. There’s a gripping story to be told in The Boys in the Boat. Daniel James Brown’s best-seller gained acclaim for depicting how nine Depression-era boys defied the odds and inspired a nation rowing crew for the U.S. in the 1936 Olympics. It’s a tale rife with optimism and intrigue – all of which director George Clooney siphons away in this bland, rote adaptation.
It’s the middle of the Depression when Joe Rantz (Callum Turner) decides to go out for Washington’s rowing team as a way to pay for his college education. Most of the young men on the team, coached by Al Ulbrickson (Joel Edgerton), are there not because they have a passion for crew but because they simply want the paycheck. While they’re a ramshackle lot to begin with, over time the Jv crew team outshines the varsity squad and eventually wins a spot in the Olympics in Berlin,...

The Boys in the Boat Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Callum Turner, Joel Edgerton
Director: George Clooney
The Boys in the Boat Movie Review Is Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: The film highlights some important moments in sports history leading up to World War II. The depiction of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin is decently thrilling. The rowing sequences feel real, given that the film cast real boat club members to make the rowing seem exciting.
What’s Bad: The direction is far too standard. There’s little room given for character growth, and Joe’s central character comes off as far too boring for a down-on-his-luck student. The pacing is way too slow, and the historical context is limply shoved into the foreground without much fascination beyond the ho-hum facts.

Amazon MGM Studios recently hosted a press conference for The Boys in the Boat, directed and produced by two-time Oscar winner George Clooney. Based on Daniel James Brown’s bestseller, the film brings the story of the University of Washington’s scrappy junior varsity rowing team to life, following its members as they vie for positions on the crew through their emergence as underdogs in the 1936 Olympics.
The film’s stars – Callum Turner (“Joe Rantz”), Joel Edgerton (“Coach Al Ulbrickson”), and Hadley Robinson (“Joyce”) – joined Clooney and producer Grant Heslov to discuss the incredible true story that inspired the film, the training process, and the difficulties of shooting a movie dedicated to the sport of rowing.
“It’s a little like F1 in a way, which is you can’t see speed from far back.

How do you make rowing look interesting? That’s one of the challenges George Clooney faced with The Boys in the Boat, the new film based on the Daniel James Brown book of the same name, starring Joel Edgerton among many others.
Ahead of the film’s Christmas Day release, the duo was kind enough to sit with The Film Stage to discuss the movie, how Clooney captured the speed of the rowing races on film, how Edgerton avoided (or leaned into) movie coaching clichés, and getting actors to learn how to row as well as Olympians.
The Film Stage: George, let me start by saying thank you for featuring Poughkeepsie so much in the movie. I’m from Poughkeepsie.
George Clooney: Are you a Poughkeepsie man?!
I am Poughkeepsie man! So the Poughkeepsie Regatta sequence was a thrill…
Clooney: You know we went there and they still have the train tracks.

Exclusive: In a tense moment during the protracted SAG-AFTRA strike when guild negotiators weren’t talking to studios/streamers as film workers faced home foreclosures with no paychecks for six months and no end in sight, George Clooney led other top A-listers in offering to uncap dues and contribute $150 million over three years to guild coffers to help qualify more actors for health benefits and other things. While he has long enjoyed the spoils of an above the line life, Clooney has never forgotten the struggling showbiz underclass he was part of before ER changed his life.

For a while it seemed like George Clooney was his generation’s heir apparent to Cary Grant, a bona fide movie star whose limited range is rendered irrelevant by his irrepressible charisma. And then he started directing films and, at least out of the gate things seemed momentarily more interesting. His 2002 directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, came on breezy but grounded, certainly the most approachable take on a Charlie Kaufman screenplay ever mounted. And 2005’s Good Night, and Good Luck, his tribute to the mandarin days of television news, was at least palpably committed to lionizing Eisenhower-era liberal resistance. In other words, he looked to become the heir apparent to Robert Redford, auteur.

In the latest directorial effort from George Clooney, the filmmaker takes on an inspiring true story. The Boys in the Boat, based on the popular novel by Daniel James Brown, tells the tale of a 1930’s rowing team who find themselves on the way to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The new feature boasts terrific performances from Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Peter Guinness, Jack Mulhern, and more. If you are looking for a little goodness and inspiration this movie going season, you may want to set sail with The Boys in the Boat.

George Clooney’s directing career has been one of both ecstasy and agony. His bold, respected spy dramedy debut (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) was immediately followed by the incredibly lauded (and incredibly great) period drama Good Night and Good Luck. What followed was a run of more mixed fare. One film was ambitious and flawed (The Midnight Sky), one overrated (The Ides of March), one undercooked (Leatherheads), and two really didn’t work. Then came The Tender Bar in 2021, a modest piece of work featuring nuanced performances from an impressive cast. It’s an old-fashioned picture starring Ben Affleck, who offers many old-fashioned, matinee idol charms, square jaw and all. Perhaps Clooney learned something about himself as a filmmaker with The Tender Bar: he may be at his best when breathing life into fact-based drama and not trying to be too cute about it.

The 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany were about more than sports. The world was still mired in the Great Depression, and faced the prospect of a second world war as fascism flourished throughout Europe. As such, there couldn't have been a worse time for Berlin to host the games. They gave Hitler a global platform to espouse his white supremacist views, and he vigorously exploited the opportunity by putting on an Aryan spectacle that made him look like the god emperor of the greatest (and whitest) country on Earth.
And so it was important for the free-ish world to trounce Hitler's athletes whenever possible. When we look back on the games now, the first figure that comes to mind is African-American track-and-field prodigy Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals as Hitler fumed from his box in his imposing, 100,000-seat Olympiastadion. But there were other triumphs, one of the most notable being the U.

The director lays on the strident messaging in this clunky film, all about the gutsy underdogs of the US rowing team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
George Clooney has been a charming and dapper Anglophile presence on the awards circuit this season while promoting the new movie he’s directed, some of which was shot not far from where he lives near Henley-on-Thames. So it’s sad to report that his film clunks harder than redwood. It is a stodgy and sententious varsity-sports underdog drama from the Depression era, a bit like his 1920s American football film Leatherheads, from 2008, but minus the comedy. Weirdly, it is as if this earnest but perfunctorily imagined film is always ordering us to feel nostalgic and sentimental about a time and place of which no one involved can have any real memory or feeling.

If George Clooney weren't such a charismatic actor, his milquetoast directing might not inspire such derision. It's been well over a decade since he sunk his teeth into a meaty part, yet his ambitions on the other side of the camera have ranged from passable to terrible. "The Boys in the Boat" ranks in the upper echelon of Clooney's directorial efforts, if only because that's a rather low bar.
This is sturdy, simple studio filmmaking at its least offensive. Clooney executes a familiar underdog sports narrative with technical competence and some measure of engaging action. It's aiming for less than his last foray into period athletics, 2008's "Leatherheads," which also tried to shoehorn in screwball comedy elements alongside football competition. But "The Boys in the Boat" achieves more by using a more vibrant palette to color within predictable lines.

The Boys in the Boat, directed by George Clooney and based on Daniel James Brown’s best-selling book, takes us on an emotionally charged journey through the inspiring true story of the University of Washington crew at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. With compelling performances from Callum Turner and Joel Edgerton, this biographical sports drama captures the essence of resilience, camaraderie, and the pursuit of the American dream.
Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the film introduces us to Joe Rantz who is portrayed with depth and authenticity by Turner. Abandoned by his family during his formative years, Rantz embodies the spirit of the working-class student athletes who come together to form the University of Washington rowing team. As Joe’s personal and financial struggles threaten to derail his sporting ambitions, he soon finds solace in his coach’s fatherly approach as as his team qualifies for the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany.

‘The Boys in the Boat’ Review: George Clooney’s Inspirational Crew Drama Is Too Hokey to Stay Afloat
You have to admire George Clooney’s unwavering dedication to making the kind of movies that feel like they could’ve been — should’ve been — the fourth-highest-grossing new release of a sleepy weekend in the Clinton era. It takes real star power to keep churning these things out, and rare chutzpah to insist they all play in theaters.
Indeed, Clooney’s side hustle might seem arrogant if the films themselves weren’t so humble and unassuming. Besotted with a vision of Hollywood that was already gone when he got there, the guy has always been a living anachronism who just keeps turning the clock back 35 years until he finally runs out of time. That used to mean channeling the spirit of Dean Martin. Now it means trying to bring Jerry Goldsmith back from the dead.

The scrappy ragtag team, the gruff but kind coach, the against-the-odds triumph — sports dramas rarely veer far from a basic template. It’s no surprise when the story’s athletes accomplish their unlikely goal; it’s how the director leads us there that matters. In the case of The Boys in the Boat, a telling of true events that can feel overly cautious in its admiring distance, the surprises lie in small moments and grace notes.
At the helm for his ninth feature, George Clooney follows the intimate coming-of-age tale The Tender Bar with a return to the realm of history. He puts a subdued spin on the story of unlikely Olympians — and generally avoids the stodginess of The Monuments Men. Hollywood is full of inspiring sports-themed movies, especially those focused on underdogs who rise to the occasion. But films about rowing teams are few and far between — until now. Director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is a gorgeous adaptation of the Depression-era story of a group of poor but scrappy young men who find a slice of glory when they become the USA’s choice to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is, to use a well worn cliché, a stand-up-and-cheer tale if ever there was one.
But the primary reason to cheer is the kind of unspoken underlying message within, that this is a sport where it is imperative that everyone in the boat rows as one, in unison and together physically and psychologically. This makes The Boys in the Boat not just enormously entertaining, but also important and relevant to our current world that is more divided,...

George Clooney gave Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling his stamp of approval to play his parents in the upcoming “Ocean’s 11” prequel.
Besides the involvement of the “Barbie” stars, not much is known about the upcoming “Ocean’s” film. However, rumors have been swirling that Robbie and Gosling will portray Danny Ocean’s parents.
“Margot Robbie’s my mother? I’ve always thought that. And Ryan Gosling is my father, and when you think about it, it makes sense. Truly,” Clooney told Variety at “The Boys in the Boat” premiere.
Jay Roach is set to direct the prequel, with Carrie Solomon writing. While Clooney’s early 2000s trilogy took place in Las Vegas, as well the original 1960 film starring the Rat Pack, the new prequel is expected to take place in 1960s Europe. “Ocean’s 8,” the latest film in the franchise, came out in 2018, starring Sandra Bullock as Danny Ocean’s sister.

George Clooney officially has eight directorial features under his belt, with the ninth, The Boys in the Boat, rowing towards a December 25th release. And it was with that movie that Clooney faced perhaps his most unique challenge yet: directing remotely.
It was during filming on The Boys in the Boat — which began in March 2022 (the project has been in development for quite some time) — that George Clooney caught Covid for the first time. But production couldn’t just stop and so he had to direct from an iPad. Speaking with People, Clooney remembered one scene with Callum Turner, who plays Olympian rower Joe Rantz. “I’m on an iPad hacking away from my bedroom…[co-producer Grant [Heslov] was sitting on the camera and they’d hold up the iPad to Cal and I’d go, ‘Ah, go fast.’ I’d rasp out ‘Faster’ whatever that was.” While this didn’t result in the best direction,...

The biggest story of the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin was Black track and field star Jesse Owens winning four gold medals and putting the lie to Adolf Hitler’s theories of race supremacy. A less-heralded U.S. gold medal triumph over host country Nazi Germany glides onto screens this Christmas with The Boys in the Boat from MGM Amazon Studios, directed by George Clooney.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Callum Turner goes on an epic quest for Olympic gold in the trailer for director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat, which Amazon MGM Studios dropped on Wednesday ahead of a Dec. 25 theatrical release.
Turner plays Joe Rantz, a Depression-era outsider who discovers joining the rowing team in college will assure him of job and housing. “We rowed out of need. The need to stay in school, the need to eat, to sleep,” an older Rantz says in a voice-over that recounts the underdog rowing team beating powerhouses like Harvard and Yale on their way to triumphing over host Nazi Germany at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

An inspirational true story turned into a bestselling novel is about to make its way to the big screen. That tends to be the natural playbook for these sorts of dramas, but this one in particular comes loaded with an extra amount of star power.
Based on author Daniel James Brown's book of the same name, "The Boys in the Boat" tells the well-documented events surrounding the 1936 Summer Olympics and the feats accomplished by the US men's rowing team from the University of Washington. As with other incredibly underdog stories, the stories of the individuals involved -- all of whom were working class athletes struggling to come out the other side of the Great Depression, almost rivals the magnitude of their achievements.
A few significant differences with "The Boys in the Boat," however, comes from its A-list director George Clooney and the historical backdrop of Nazi Germany hosting the...

Joel Edgerton Coaches An Underdog Rowing Team in George Clooney’s ‘Boys in the Boat’ Trailer (Video)
When money, food and shelter were in short supply, joining a rowing team was a matter of life and death. That’s the hook in George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, “The Boys in the Boat.”
Based on Daniel James Brown’s non-fiction novel, the picture concerns the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. The trailer hits all the underdog sports team cliches, although cliches become as much for a reason. The picture looks handsomely staged and impeccably acted by the likes of Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner.
This marks Clooney’s first directorial effort since the Ben Affleck-starring “The Tender Bar” in 2021. It’s unquestionably a sign of the times that Clooney hasn’t directed a feature for a theatrically focused studio since “Rubicon” for Paramount in late 2017.
To be fair, Amazon and MGM Studios will give this Spyglass/Smokehouse feature...
