American Idol's voters always mess up the first week of voting and eliminate the wrong contestant, usually a girl. Think about last year's saucy 13th place finisher Ashthon Jones, or 2010's sweetly disposable 12th place finisher Lacey Brown. I'd have liked to see those dames trot it out another week, especially over their competitors Karen Rodriguez and Tim "Never Naked Enough" Urban. This year, Nigel Lythgoe wisely put the first week's verdict in the judges hands, allowing them to select an evictee between the lowest-vote-getting male and female contestant. Normally, Elise Testone would've gone home in a huff and we would've never seen her downtrodden Brett Butler impersonation again, but no, J-Lo anointed a different loser. And I'm thrilled about it.
Jeremy Rosado is your first loser, America. As I pointed out yesterday, he's the most infuriating type of contestant: Ok voice, no personality, fake humility. I have shivers.

American Idol‘s Top 13 results-show telecast was chock full of suspense:
* Would Jimmy Iovine prove himself such an adept cue-card reader that SNL would come calling with a hosting invitation? (Spoiler alert: I’m more likely to magically develop a condition known as “abs” and take over Christian Bale’s role in the Batman franchise.)
* Would that side-angle shot of Jennifer Lopez (in revealing cream-colored couch leather) result in her second nip-slip accusation in the last month? (I’m going with “no,” but then again, I’m not the kind of guy who’d go all slo-mo on my DVR trying to figure it out.

I kicked off my recap of The X Factor‘s series premiere with a multiple choice question, so it seems somehow fitting to also begin our discussion of its sophomore outing by asking everyone to get out their No. 2 pencils and grapple with this mind-bender: A mega-hyped talent competition is airing its second episode, and 50 minutes in, the most entertaining aspect is a cellphone ad starring the show’s ornery British judge: How many minutes until you change the channel, or else find yourself mesmerized by a filthy, half-deflated basketball that undoubtedly deserves the Emmy for Outstanding Prop in a Reality Series Backstory?...

For some folks, American Idol is a jaunty little TV show that provides a fine distraction every Wednesday and Thursday night from January to May. For others, it’s a 365-day-a-year obsession that’s yielded dozens of album downloads and a terrifying number of iTunes spins that we would rather not begin to count. Since I fall into the latter category, I’m not ashamed to admit that I spend an inordinate amount of time pondering the post-Idol careers of my favorite former contestants — seriously, folks, it’s time you checked out Aloha Misho’s Badd Ep on iTunes,...

Scotty McCreery was named as the Season 10 American Idol at L.A.’s Nokia Theater on May 25, 2011, beating out fellow contestant Lauren Alaina. The newly chosen winner sang his new single “I Love You This Big” after the announcement, which came after a record-breaking 122 million votes. Some of the biggest duets of the night included fourth place contestant James Durbin singing “Living After Midnight” and “Breaking the Law” with Judas Priest. The female contestants, including Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart, Karen Rodriguez and Pia Toscano, sang melodys of Beyonce and TLC songs with the famous singers. Alaina paired up with Season 4 Idol winner...

Lady GaGa and Beyonce Knowles, who served as guest mentors on a previous separate week of "American Idol", were two of the many musical guests at the finale of the singing competition on May 25. The former was bathed in blue lights as she performed "The Edge of Glory", while the latter belted out a live version of "1+1" with red lights and smoke surrounding her.
Appearing high atop the stage, GaGa was dressed in a long cape and a bedazzled headpiece which has chains hanging on it. The Mother Monster delivered the first verse of the song before ditching the headpiece to reveal a warrior-type outfit. Halfway through the performance, she was joined by saxophonist Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

Good news for Nigel Lythgoe: In the year 2015, when he begins production on his Lifetime original movie Sing It Anyway: The Lauren Alaina Story, he’ll already have a script in place. Oh, sure, Uncle Nigel might take a few creative liberties with the historical record — perhaps Little Lauren will deliver her final American Idol performance in a driving rainstorm, on her way to the airport to stop her future fiancé from getting on a plane, with a pit stop to rescue a pack of kindly grandmothers from a burning bus – but make no mistake: Tuesday’s Season 10 performance-night finale was the carefully crafted,...

The ladies of "American Idol" proved it during Wednesday's (May 25) season-closer when they performed a medley of Beyoncé hits, and were joined at the finish by Beyoncé herself.
The girls — Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart — hit the stage in various red-and-black ensembles and shared the stage during B's #1 smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Adedapo opened the song and threw some sass on it before passing the mic to Jones, the season's 13th-place finisher, who was eliminated during the first week of semifinals competition. Randy Jackson nicknamed "American Idol" season 10 "The Remix." As the Simon-less cycle starts its final descent, and as teenage country singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina compete on TV one last time, it's clear that Randy's premonition was 100% accurate. (At this point I should mention that I think remixes are often endless, repetitive, lazy cash grabs, more about the producer than the original artist.)
At this point, I'd urge everyone to raise your seat backs to their full, upright position. Failure to do so will result in you falling asleep within eight minutes. Unless you're a country fan, this will be the most boring "Idol" finale since Katharine McPhee sat down to sing "Over the Rainbow" for the 900th time.
But wait! What's this? A carefully worded post on TMZ hinting that Lauren Alaina may be too sick to perform and producers are scrambling to reinstate third-placer Haley Reinhart in the eleventh hour?...

The judges and producers try to make the claim every year, but I think there's a plausible argument to be made that "American Idol" Season 10 had the deepest talent pool in the show's history. Not only did this season have a Top 13 that was embarrassment-free -- Ashthon Jones and Thia Megia were, at worst, occasionally worthy mediocrities -- but a slightly erratic cut-down from the Top 24 cost us plausible hopefuls like Lauren Turner, Robbie Rosen and Kendra Chantelle, plus early candidates like Jordan Dorsey, Rachel Zevita and Julie Zorrilla, who looked liked contenders during the audition episodes,...

Though it has ruled the TV for much of the past decade, there were no guarantees that "American Idol" would lord the airwaves when season 10 kicked off in January. But with a champion about to be crowned in the battle of the country teens between Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, we thought we'd convene a panel of experts to sift through this year's other winners and losers.
The Winners Fox Network: The most obvious winner, according to The Hollywood Reporter's music editor Shirley Halperin is the Fox network itself. Coming into a season of vast uncertainty following the departure of three-quarters of the judging panel, including anchor Simon Cowell, not to mention a ratings dip, the network had every reason to be concerned.

We learned last night which American Idol contestants will be advancing to the finals. But what I really want to know is: Who will the Top 13 sing with in the finale? Now, we know every year, the Fox series trots out A-list musical acts (like the rumored Bono; Fox is not commenting on whether or not he will really appear on the season 10 finale) to sing alongside a good number of finalists. So now it’s time to create our wish lists: If every member of the Top 13 were to sing with a superstar, which would you choose for them?...

Let’s be real for a second: We needed NBC’s The Voice in our lives about as much as Christina Aguilera’s hair (wig?) needed another peroxide treatment. I mean, Tuesdays are supposed to be reserved for Dancing With the Stars results, Glee, The Good Wife, and (when possible) catching up on back episodes of 90210 or The Killing.
But the DVR is a harsh mistress. And the series premiere of The Voice was pretty terrific. Which means we’ll all just have to dig down deep in our couch cushions and find two more hours to sacrifice on the altar of appointment television.

Dancing with the Stars professional Mark Ballas was among the audience members at the American Idol live performance show this week. The dancer, who has been romantically linked to Idol eliminee Pia Toscano, was spotted watching the Top 7 performances on Wednesday night with his father Corky. The theme on Wednesday's (April 20) "American Idol" top-seven performance night was music from the 21st century, and while James Durbin blew it out with a Muse extravaganza, Jacob Lusk took it down for a touching Luther Vandross tribute and teens Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina played it close to the vest with traditional country tunes.
First up was McCreery, who sang "Swingin' " by LeAnn Rimes, giving it his usual dose of country comfort. Backed by a four-piece horn section, McCreery brought the whole arsenal: the bizarre sideways-mic technique, the George W. Bush-esque facial tics and the "down-home" charm. For the first time this season, though, McCreery's shtick seemed a bit phoned-in and fell a bit flat, lacking his usual appeal.

It becomes more and more likely that "American Idol" this season has a slimmer chance to crown a female contestant. As apparent from this week's double elimination of Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo, contestants begin to question the kind of audience who watch the show and cast their votes. Thia and Naima believe they are dominated by young girls voting for the guys.

However, it doesn't mean that Megia overlooks the guys' talent. Look at the photo above. Notice anything? Well, beyond the absence of last night’s eliminated contestants — Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia — you should notice quite the gender disparity within the Top 9. Though Randy Jackson began the season in January by telling media outlets that he thought a female contestant would win American Idol, season 10′s girls have been dropping faster than a saved Casey Abrams. Though the girls slightly outnumbered the guys in the Top 13, we’ve since lost Ashthon Jones, Karen Rodriguez, and the aforementioned Naima and Thia, bringing the current total to six men and only three women.

With two more girls -- Naima Adedapo, 25, and Thia Megia, 16 -- culled from the "American Idol" herd by a series record 55 million votes on Thursday night's results show, you have to wonder if there really is something to the accusation that voters have a gender bias. It started out so well, too: Seven of this season's 13 finalists were women. However, the first four voted off -- Adedapo, Megia, Ashthon Jones and Karen Rodriguez --...

Let's face it: Haley Reinhart never stood a chance. She's been in the bottom three both weeks so far and she doesn't seem to have clicked with judges or the audience. Given her white soul mama persona, Wednesday night's (March 23) Motown theme should have been right up her alley. She picked a good song, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "You Really Got a Hold on Me," but the combination of her neck rolls, off-putting growling and shouty Holiday Inn lounge performance didn't do her any favors.
She seems poised to continue the steady march of female singers off the season 10 stage (goodbye Ashthon Jones and Karen Rodriguez, we hardly knew ye) on Thursday night's (March 24) results show after another tepid attempt. And the black shorts? Forget about it, that was just all wrong!

The first two weeks of American Idol‘s season 10 finals have passed without a single male contestant landing in the bottom three. And while some pundits have predicted we could see four or even five women sent packing before a single guy gets ousted, I think that’s total folly. Idol is a fickle and finicky mistress, subject to change its moods as often as J.Lo changes her hairstyles.
And that’s why on this week’s installment of Idoloonies, my panel of reader cohosts and I discuss which season 10 male contestant is likeliest to go home first, and...

Karen Rodriguez has become the second contestant to be voted off the tenth season of American Idol.
The 21 year old singer from New York found herself in the bottom three alongside Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart and when it was revealed that she had polled the lowest amount of public votes, she performed Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero’ once again for Steve Tylery, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson.
However for the second week running the panel decided not to use their one a season save, though Randy Jackson did reveal that the decision was not unanimous. Judging from the way that Jennifer Lopez was whispering to both of her counterparts throughout Rodriguez’ performance, we can only guess that she wanted to save the Karen.
Randy said:
“This was not unanimous, by the way. We all discussed this amongst ourselves but it’s not happening.”

Last week, viewers of "American Idol" sent home Ashthon Jones, the first voter-fueled casualty of the show's 10th season. Since the home audience didn't want Jones in their pool of finalists to begin with, it was logical that they wouldn't vote for her again (especially following her disastrous performance of Diana Ross' "When You Tell Me That You Love Me"). In fact, it seems painfully obvious that the first three singers to go will probably be the three the three singers chosen as the judges' wild cards.
That's why it could be the end of the line for Naima Adedapo (a fellow wild card save), whose tepid run through Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It" was a classic end-of-the-line showing. Two of our MTV News "American Idol" experts — "Idol Party Live" and "Idol in 60 Seconds" host Jim Cantiello and the Village Voice's Maura Johnston — think that Adedapo's time is up.

Is American Idol's Ashthon Jones really a diva?
Although the recently eliminated singer performed with an attitude that earned that label from the judges, Jones says she was sad that voters may have taken it the wrong way.
"When I get on stage, I'm a different person, and I think America might've twisted it a little bit...I know I ain't all that," she tells TVGuide.com.

var brightcovevideoid = '831918390001'; For Wednesday's two-hour American Idol episode, the dozen finalists performed songs from their birth years. It might have been more exciting, and challenging, if the peg had been astrological signs. This season has the advantage of very good vocalists, but consistency has the relative disadvantage of not being as much fun. Remember Tatiana? I miss her sometimes. Then again, if you have five performances you can consider good, that's nothing to sneeze at. Best: Stefano Langone (1989), who's more emotional than necessary, sang "If You Don't Know Me by Now" at full throttle. "Over the top, over the top,...

American Idol Recap: Season 10, Episode 18 “The Top 12 Perform” (3/16/2011)
Let’s just take a second to talk about how much of a baller I am. Last week, the three lowest grades of the night that I gave (Haley Reinhart, Ashthon Jones, and Karen Rodriguez) were the three who landed in the bottom, and Ashthon, who landed the lowest grade along with Karen, was the one to go home. I’m totes Charlie Sheen #winning right now. Now I’m nervous as to whether or not I can get it right again. Pressure!

Last week, we saw Ashthon Jones go home and nobody was surprised about it. Tonight the Top 12 are singing songs from the year(s) they were born, which means that we get to hear hits from the late 80's and early 90's!
I looked over the Billboard Top 100 from each year and made predictions, while also realizing that tonight is going to be so much fun because I love the best of 80's, 90's, and today. I'm actually, seriously excited. There were too many dance hits in those years for all twelve of them to sing ballads. And may American Idol never make me do math again.

We’re just 11 weeks away from American Idol‘s season 10 finale — how scary is that? — and so on today’s installment of Idoloonies, I take a totally premature swing at predicting who will be the final three contestants standing. If that’s not enough to get you to click “play,” my reader cohosts and I also bid adieu to Ashthon Jones, dish Paul McDonald’s sudden side-shuffle from glory, debate Casey Abrams’ record-selling potential, talk about what Pia Toscano needs to do right this second, and choose the very worst performances by a man and a woman during Top 13 week.

She may have been the first person voted off American Idol, but that doesn't mean Ashthon Jones is ready to throw in the towel on that whole "being famous" thing. "I would love to play Whitney Houston," Jones told NextMovie. "I did one of her songs on Idol. I think I could do her really well." Judging from Houston's past, the singer does seem ripe for a biopic. Unfortunately, Jones doesn't want to delve into Houston's messy recent history with drugs and Bobby Brown. "It would be her career from the beginning and stop way before then. I wouldn't do that to her -- I love her. Whatever she's going through, that's her business. I don't want to dip into that." Ashthon Jones, the first finalist ousted from the current season of "American Idol," won't be the nation's favorite televised singer this year -- but that doesn't mean she has plans to disappear from the public eye.
"I'd love to be in a movie, a TV show, a commercial, anything with a camera," she tells NextMovie exclusively after her appearance on MTV's "The Seven."
" 'American Idol' gives you some pointers on how to do interviews; it opens up the door if you constantly want to be on camera, you know? I think that would be a really cool thing to do."
Jones would be happy to mirror the path of fellow "Idol" alum Jennifer Hudson, who follows her "Dreamgirls" success with a starring role in the upcoming Mandela biopic "Winnie."

Casey Abrams is back in the game. The "American Idol" front-runner, who missed out on Thursday's results show because he was hospitalized for a flare-up of ulcerative colitis, posted a message to fans on Monday announcing that he is feeling better and will be ready to go for Wednesday night's performance show.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Abrams made the statements at an "Idol" panel on Monday at the 28th annual PaleyFest, where he took the stage along with eight of his fellow finalists (minors Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Thia Megia were doing schoolwork). "I'm feeling really good," he said.
The 20-year-old Illinois singer reportedly received blood transfusions last week, during his second hospitalization of the season.

After Jennifer Lopez called her the 'D' word, latest castoff says America got the wrong impression: 'Diva alert!'
By Jim Cantiello

If there's one thing Ashthon Jones learned from her brief-but-memorable journey on "American Idol," it's that America does not take kindly to the word "diva."
"Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez called Ashthon the "D" word while raving about her semifinal performance, Monica's "Love All Over Me," but the Nashville native quickly realized that the term carries some negative connotations.
"When J.Lo said it, I understood what she was talking about. You know how Patti Labelle, Diana Ross, Whitney were divas but they were divas in a positive way? They were sweet and humble backstage, but when they got on the stage, they [showed] the world that they could do it," Jones told MTV News on Monday (March 14). "America didn't think that," she laughed before sassily snapping her fingers.

Ousted American Idol contestant Ashthon Jones has said that she believes that being eliminated from the show was all part of God's plan for her. Jones became the first contestant to leave the show's tenth season, after failing to convince the judges to save her following her performance of the Diana Ross track 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me'. "I feel like it was all in God's timing, and he has something better for me," Jones told reporters in a conference call after being eliminated. "I'm not saying American Idol was not good, (more)...

Nashville's Ashthon Jones admits that being the first finalist booted off American Idol this season wasn't surprising - especially after sliding into the wildcard slot to round out the top 13 - but the singer plans to go full speed ahead with her music career. "I'm so driven right now," she says. "I'd rather be tired doing this than sitting at home. I now know what it takes to live that star life." Jones burst into tears when the judges opted not to save her following her redemption attempt by singing Diana Ross's "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" because she was overwhelmed,...

Another busy week in the MTV Newsroom has come to a close, though the news certainly won't be stopping just because there are a few days off. In fact, the world will almost certainly remain focused on the cataclysmic tsunami that has swept over the eastern coast of Japan (and the fallout that will come because of that disaster). So before you do your part in the recovery effort and reach out to those in need, be sure to catch up with everything you might have missed on the MTV Newsroom blog this week, including the saga of late former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr, the new Foo Fighters video and a whole lot of "American Idol" madness.

In the first major elimination of the season, the young woman who wanted to be American Idol's diva-in-training, Ashthon Jones, was voted out Thursday night. Ashthon, 24, who hails from Valdosta, Georgia and lives in Nashville, was chosen as one of three wild cards last week, but she was unable to persuade more than 30 million voters to keep her in the competition. After learning she was at the bottom, Ashthon sang Diana Ross' "When You Tell Me That You Love Me," hoping that the judges would use their one save of the season to keep her going. But it wasn't to be. Her role model, judge Jennifer Lopez, broke the news: "Not this time baby... I'm sorry."

When Ashthon Jones was eliminated on American Idol Thursday night, she seemed to take it pretty well. Sure, she had a minor breakdown, but she managed to pull herself together to sing her swan song and participate in the traditional group hug with her fellow contestants before heading backstage. We imagined she'd lose her brave face and melted into a puddle of waterworks once she got away from the cameras and the live studio audience, but it turns out that wasn't the case. Why? American Idol contestant Ashthon Jones has said that she will continue with her musical dreams following her exit from the show. The 25-year-old became the first season ten finalist to be voted off the Fox competition on Thursday night after falling into the bottom three alongside Ashley Rodriguez and Haley Reinhart. Speaking to reporters on a conference call today, she said that being the first to exit the show was not necessarily a bad thing, saying that she will take what she learned and put it into her future career. "This isn't the end," she said. "Some people end right here, but there is no way I can do that. It's always the beginning of something great and you have to continue on. You can't live of, 'I was in American Idol's Top 13' for the rest of your life." The singer went on to say that (more)...
